[Q] [Help] Stuck at Google screen - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So, today my Nexus 5 crashed while using it normally. It is not the first time, of course, but these specific problem appeared just one time before now. The phone is dead, but just until I connect it to the charger. Then it begins to show the Google screen at the beginning, crashes, and does the same thing again. The time between the crashed variates from 1 to 5 seconds. I also tried to get to the bootloader, it works, but after 1 to 3 seconds it crashes again and goes back to the Google screen, crashing, Google screen, crashing,.... Disconnecting just causes the Nexus to turn off completely, and instantly.
Custom recovery: MultiRom edition of TWRP
OS: CM11S V.1.5
Kernel: big-bum V.28
I googled, but all the people having this problem were able to get into the bootloader without crashing and also their phone turned on without connecting to the charger.
Maybe you guys have an idea what to do?

Might be a faulty power button which got stuck in and is causing reboots. In most cases its this.

This could be right. But why does it only try to boot when it is connected to the charger?

Cause the battery is dead.

It Had about 50% when crashing and I connected it 2 hours to the charger trying to reboot, so this would be very strange.

Strange maybe, but probably the case. All those reboots will drop a battery quick.

But how can I charge it. It starts directly with the booting

Leave it for several hours.... Hopefully it charges faster than it drains.
But it's irrelevant if it's the power button. That needs to be addressed. Trying to flash anything is risky if it's gonna reboot on its own.

Yeah, but how can I check if it's really the power button? And, the worst thing, I can't even ask Google for an exchange because of a crack in the screen.

Go into bootloader mode and see if it reboots. If it does, it's the button. If not... See if its OK a while sitting in that mode. If so, flash stock with fastboot.
That's all I can think to try.
---------- Post added at 05:28 PM ---------- Previous post was at 05:27 PM ----------
Oops, You've done that.
So it's power button.... Or some sort of power short otherwise. But button is the best bet.

Thank you for the help. I will try to fix the button.

[Q] Atrix 2 wont boot up, battery issues?

Hi guys,
I just recently flashed my phone to the Romulus rom, and its been going great. There have been a few hiccups but nothing too big, except for 2 things:
1. Whenever the phone is plugged in, the lockscreen becomes unresponsive. When i try putting in my unlock pattern, it only allows about 2 dots max before it thinks i have lifted my finger of the screen. To fully enter the pattern i have to unplug it, enter the pattern then reconnect the charger. Anyone else had this, or know of a fix?
2. This is the major one. For some reason, when my phone turns off due to low battery, the phone just wont come on, no matter how much i charge it. It gets stuck in a bootloop at the moto logo. Its happened twice now, the first time i somehow got it working by using the charger to turn it on, then unplugging and pressing the power button immediately at the logo. However yesterday this isnt working. When i do that, at times it boots up, but then when it gets to the lock screen it tells me to connect the charger, then shuts down again. The battery icon is red with an X accros the symbol. Does this mean that its not detecting the battery? How would i fix this?
Cheers for your help

First off mate, all questions go in our Q&A Section, so just keep that in mind going forward.
Now, your 1st question regarding the touch screen's responsiveness while trying to unlock with password, I've experienced this myself, and while charging. Though I'm not really sure what causes this, to be truthful. I've found though, that sometimes locking and unlocking will get things to cooperate. I doubt it there's anything to cause concern with any hardware (digitizer) since you don't mention this as being an issue outside the unlocking of the device while charging. Mine was sporadic, and I eventually grew tiresome of the pattern unlock, and did away with it altogether. Perhaps someone else could chime in here with a better explanation as to why this happens. (?)
Now, to your more 'serious' issue. Seeing as how you have Clockworkmod Recovery (CWM) installed, you never want to allow your device to power down at the low battery state. You're lucky that you can at least -or at least have- been able to boot after a low power shut down. You may need to FXZ back to stock, if the phone will not boot at all. Can you get into AP Fastboot by pressing and holding AT THE SAME TIME the volume up +volume down + power buttons? If so, you can restore to stock and get yourself out of the soft brick. Here is a great thread with discussions by Fall of Enosis and jimbridgman, I suggest you read through this:

I've experienced the screen lag as well.. I think it only comes out when u are charging...usually i just d/c the carger then unlock the device and then plug it again..Something is still lagged...I relly don't know why this happens, but one friend has a Vibrant..and have this problem as well..So we aren't the only one whit this problem.

Edit: Also i'm on SCV7 so it's nothing to do with the rom.
For your second Q...Try to clear battery stats on CWM?? Sometimes when u flash a new rom u need to clear those stats...So give it a shot and let us know what happened.

This won't do anything for the OP's inability to boot. That's why I said that likely his best bet is to see if he can boot into AP Fastboot, so that he may be able to FXZ back to stock...

Cheers for the heads up, its not exactly a question, but I've seen questions on this board before so i thought that was ok.
Thing is, its not that it wont boot, it boots after i charge it for a while, but it states that the charger is not connected each time it boots, then shuts down.
Why should we not allow it to go into a low battery state when on CWM? I also set CWM recovery to start at each boot, and i have backups of just before and after i flashed the phone. Cant i just restore a previous backup rather than flash to stock?
And with the battery reset, doesnt clear any user data yeah? I have alot of stuff i would hate to lose

Okay, I thought from the thread title that at some point, the phone wouldn't boot after a low power shut down. If the phone is saying that it isn't recognizing the battery while charging, you might have some luck trying the methods I overview in THIS POST. The battery will NOT charge while in CWM Recovery, nor will it charge while in AP Fastboot. This is why it is imperative that you not allow the phone to get to such a low power stage, especially when attempting a flash. You can certainly restore via CWM either of the backups that you have, and see if the problem clears up. And with a battery stats reset, nothing is wiped except the battery statistics. All of your user data, applications, settings, etc. will remain in tact. Hope this helps...

The battery reset actually worked! I had to charge it for quite a while on the usb charger since it wouldnt charge on the mains charger. Once it was on i made a backup then cleared the battery stats, and now it detects the mains charger.
Cheers for your help guys i still dont get why it wouldnt charge on the mains charger when the battery was low, even though before it would charge before when the battery wasnt...

Hard Bricked...

Last ditch effort for a solution here.
I have a 16gb white that's been performing just fine... i did unlock the bootloader and root, but had no issues. That was several days ago. Today, I installed a flashlight app from the play store. (Droidlight LED Flashlight by Motorola). Once I ran the app, the camera LED came on for about 2 seconds, and then both the LED and the screen went dark. The battery was at about 80% when this happened.
The device is now completely non-responsive. Holding down the power button and any combination of keys does nothing, and there is no charging indicator when it's plugged in. I've never bricked a device before, surprised this seems to be caused by a play store app (although if it's truly bricked, I suspect some sort of power issue).
Thanks for any advice anyone can provide before I have to RMA this thing. Any Ideas?
Can you get into the bootloader? Hold Vol down + power

Nothing works? You might be the second brick of the day
You could try to remove the battery, maybe that'll help.
edit: ofc try RMA first.

Hook it to a charger for some time and then try to get in fastboot mode once in a while, then go to recovery and delete the cache and do a data factory reset and reboot. That is what i would do at least.

Can't get into the bootloader. I've tried the following combination of keys...
Vol+ and Power - nothing
Vol- and Power - nothing
Vol+, Vol- and Power - nothing
Power on it's own for 2+ minutes - nothing
---------
Contacted Google and they're getting me an RMA... regardless, I'd be careful about running that particular app, or possibly any flashlight app.

I think he means someone else started a thread as well indicating that they also had a bricked phone. I read that thread before I created this one, as mine wasn't related to fastboot or recovery. My brick occured from actions that occured during runtime, and root wasn't even acquired by the app that caused the failure.

No it doesn't happen unless you don't do your homework and screw something up. If you read and learn it's very hard to hardbrick your phone. But this is the second one I've seen today. In both cases there are unique reasons it happened.

I flash my Phone with custom ROMs since the beginning of the Nexus era. To root and to flash my Nexus one took me like 2 hours to complete it (I admit, that I received some help back then).
For me it doesn't look here like it happened because of anyone's fault. The phone is available since this week and he's already rooted. He doesn't look like someone, who is new to it.
drain and recharge
if you have a secondary phone use it for a few days and leave your Nex5 to drain. Should be completely drained in 2-3 days. Then charge it up and try to enter bootloader.
PS: you could also try to open the phone and manually disconnect and reconnect the battery...

I'm going to let the battery drain, but there's literally no power running through the phone right now, it's doing nothing. Something was fried, I'm afraid it will take a lot longer than 2-3 days for the battery to naturally drain.
I'd love to pop the back off and unplug the battery (that was my first thought) but I'm not doing anything to risk getting the phone replaced. I'll RMA it.

Phone won't boot

Hey guys,
My phone shut off unexpectedly today and now won't turn back on. When I try to power it on I see the Google logo for a couple seconds and then it'll just shut off again. I tried holding the volume up/down buttons to access the bootloader, but right after I get to the screen it just restarts itself again.
Connecting to power (AC or USB) causes it to constantly reboot over and over, it just shows the Google logo for a couple seconds and then restarts again.
Any ideas on what I can do?

Provide more information for a starter - stock? unlocked bootloader? rooted? third party recovery? rom and if yes which?
If it's stock I'd RMA it.
If not what did you do immediately before the problem started?
try holding the power button for > 2 seconds which should turn it off completely, leave it on a wall charger for at least a couple of hours then turn it back on - I doubt it'll fix the problem but it's a simple thing to try...

Everything on it is stock, no ROM, not rooted. I had just taken it out of my pocket to check the time, put it back in my pocket and then felt it vibrate, took it back out to see it at the Google logo and haven't been able to get it started since. There was one or two times when it got past the Google logo and started to show the start up animation (the four colours bouncing around or whatever it is) but then it shut off again.
I tried holding the power button to completely turn it off, but plugging it into the wall charger just causes it to repeatedly attempt to boot like I mentioned earlier. I'll leave it for a while and hope for the best
Sounds like the mobo is bad. Most likely will have to rma it.

Maybe not. Sounds like a stuck power button to me.
OP does the phone just endlessly repeat this cycle? If so it's rebooting itself do to a stuck power button. One other users already reported similar issues and his power button was indeed stuck. Mash the power button hard for a minute to see if you can unstick it.

Thanks so much, really wasn't looking forward to waiting for weeks while the RMA went through. The button didn't appear to be stuck - it was still clicky - but after mashing it for a minute it started up normally and appears to be fine now.

brother the issue is gone, as mentioned "sticky power button" was causing it. read the thread before posting. btw thanks for effort anyway... haha
:laugh::silly:
Hi all. Sorry to reopen an old thread (but xda suggested I check here before making my own thread).
I think we have the exact same problem with a Nexus 5. Unfortunately, bashing the power button doesn't seem to be helping (and makes me feel slightly silly .
Anyone know how much effort it would be to take it apart to get to the part that's stuck? Any good instructions?
Thanks.
Weird, I have the same issue starting a few hours ago. I updated to the Oct 17 beta of Cataclysm then a hour later it happened. But was told it sounds like the power button issue.
Took it apart, tried to fix it. If plugged in I can get into the bootloader, but then it reboots again. I've tried tapping it on a hard surface, and it gets seems like it almost fixes it because it'll connect to my laptop but then reboots again.
Could it be the battery? It was fully charged but then died as I was deleting hundreds of photo's in Dropbox to move photo's over from my phone because it was full.
I too am running into this same issue. My screen cracked so I replaced the digitizer with some success. In the process I damaged the battery and needed to replace it. When I got the new battery and replaced it my phone is now unusable.
When unplugged: I turn on the phone and it's running the ANDROID animation then turns off.
When plugged in: I turn on the phone, the ANDROID animation runs then the phone restarts and continues the process over and over again.
I then flashed the phone with Marshmallow and the same thing happens. Except now that I flashed it I get the Android icon with the spinning gear. So; I flashed it back to 5.1.1, but the same result.
Could I have physically damaged something inside or is it a battery issue? Thanks for any insight.

Nexus 5 wont boot

Last night, my nexus 5 suddenly rebooted itself. When it restarted it was in a boot loop. but not a boot loop that i can get out of.
It just keeps going round and round almost as if the power button is stuck. however the power button is not stuck.
i cant get into recovery to clear the cache as when i boot into the bootloader it just automatically restarts again, i can move one option up or down and that is to shut down or reboot into bootloader, but not the second move that would take me to recovery.
i have now taken the back off, and unplugged the battery in the vain hope that it clears through whatever is causing the issue but im not convinced it will make any difference.
Please advise. i'm completely housebound and cannot walk due to having a knee operation, and completely dependent on my mobile if i have an emergency.
i've tried Kwoggers out of the box fix from his 2.1.2 toolkit but this didnt work as the phone wont stay in one place long enough for it to get a fix.

Not exactly sure, it's happened to a couple of people. Another reason could be a defective battery. What happens if you plug in the charger and attempt to boot?

same. just boot loops.
the reason i dont think its the power button is it just stops doing it and just switches off.
when its plugged in it just reboots around the white google logo, constantly. without being plugged in it goes to the 4 balls and reoots

Afraid there's not much you can do other than RMA, then.

Pixel randomly shuts off. need to hold Power for 30 seconds to start. any fix?

My pixel randomly throughout the day turns off spontaneously and the only way to start it is to hold the power button for almost 30s. Anyone have this problem and know of a fix? It's really frustrating
I'm running RR with Franco but I tried this with purenexus and ElementalX and still had the same problem. It doesn't have to do with roms also I clean flash every time
Its done that to me twice in the 3 months

What does the battery stat show? The Nexus 6P has that issue right now where the device just shuts off and you have to hold the power button to start it, or plug it in and wait a few minutes before it will start. Some people have had this happen right when it comes off the charger. I've had it happen to 7 Nexus 6P...RMA!

This is the first android phone I have ever owned that I haven't rooted and flashed.
I had this problem start with my first pixel and about 10 days later the device failed completely (would only boot to bootloader). Same thing happened with the replacement.
Third device seems to be working fine so far.
Did you ever try booting in safe mode to see if it happens. It very well could be a third party app causing the phone to crash and reboot. If it happens in safe mode it is probably an underlying hardware issue.

No but I will. How long should I keep it in safe mode?
I actually unrooted my phone (meaning didn't flash supersu) and haven't experienced it anymore....Idk if that's the issue tho will keep testing over the next few days before sending it back

Has a solution been found to this?
My pixel XL does this when I'm watching videos. Doesn't matter if it's using YouTube, Google photos, chrome, etc... It happens randomly and sometimes doesn't happen all day. But, the only time it happens is when a video is playing. And it happens in safe mode too. I bought the phone off eBay, no warranty and don't have money ATM to replace or repair it. I'm just sol I guess.
