[APP] Android Troper 0.12 (Tvtropes.org app) (Updated June 20th)

With the unfortunate demise of "Droid Tropes", the (previously) only "TvTropes" app, I was feeling in need. I also wanted to learn how to write Android apps.
So I created "Android Troper" (originally named "This Troper" and re-named due to community objections):

This is my first app so don't expect anything brilliant. It's currently 'working' at best, and I'm still learning.

It looks pretty basic, graphically speaking. That's not necessarily a bad thing though.
You might want to add a default search bar to the first page. Took me a second to realize I had to hit menu to do anything.
I force closed (twice at once, oddly) when I tapped on the hidden text to try to make it appear.

When you hit hidden text - which page was it in?

Thankyou for making this app! I've been wanting to be able to read TvTropes on my phone for a while and I missed out on DroidTropes.
Works well on my Galaxy S II, I'm able to reveal spoilers without a FC and it works pretty smooth. May I suggest in future version to possibly add a quick scroll (where you can hold the scroll bar and scroll much faster) so you can jump around pages quicker? It's not necessary but it would be a nice addition.
This app is off to a great start, I look forward to future releases.

Honestly I've been trying to enable quickscroll from day 1 but I can't seem to get it to work. It gets really annoying on long pages (and most of them are :-/)

Hey everyone and thanks for trying my app
I just posted a small update which enables 'Actionbar' (thanks to ActionBarSherlock) and makes the app 100% ICS compatible (including phones with no dedicated 'menu' button). Also easier to read the title and/or access functions.

Great to see it being updated quickly. Two things however. It seems asterisks which reveal additional information are click able but don't actually show the information. Also there doesn't seem to be any way to access the subpages of whatever article you are on (YMMW, Fridge etc). Perhaps you could put a button in the action bar which would produce a drop down list for the sub pages available for the current page?

Regarding the asterisks, I completely forgot that was a thing. I'll add it in the next version (Can you give me a link to a page that has it so I don't get lost in the site? )
As for the subpages, I was considering it, but it slipped my mind. I'll add it to the list

I'm too addicted to tabbed browsing to actually use it (like to open few links in background while reading an article), but I tested it for a while and didn't found any problems. I think that there are people that will find it useful - good job .

I believe there is an asterisk at the top of the Futurama page. http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/WesternAnimation/Futurama?from=Main.Futurama (right underneath the picture.)

Tabbed browsing is an obvious feature to want in a TvTropes app (as the attached comic demonstrates) but it's way over my capabilities (also will probably destroy your RAM and battery ). Instead, I'm going to create a 'read later' list like there was in the 'Droid Tropes' app - I found it rather useful.
Tip: If you want to know what a link leads to (names of links in TVTropes can be confusing) long-press it, the popup's title will be the link's target.

Thanks for info - that was one of the things that I missed too, good to know that it is implemented, but I just didn't know how to use it .
I don't think that tabbed browsing would destroy battery. Still, RAM consumption could be rather high, but only if you would load page just after clicking and opening in background. As alternative, you can add it to tab list, but don't actually load it unless it's activated. Apart from that, you can also unload pages opened in background but inactive for long time (when amount used up ram is too high). To save bandwidth, unloaded pages can be saved in temporary files instead of just being removed from memory. Of course, these are just hints that may be useful if you'll want to implement it one day. "To read" list may work just as well as tabbed browsing.

First in queue are the sub-pages and the asterisks (already done the asterisks code, hope I'll finish the sub-pages thing by the weekend).

Had force close when tapping on hidden text but hell that didn't matter to me since I'm such a TvTropes addict I'm just glad somebody is back doing an app for it

Just finished writing the next version. Need to stress-test it a little before I let it out to the world, but the main new feature (other than Asterisks support) is that on pages with sub-pages (name-spaces) a submenu will appear in the menu with links to all sub-pages.
Tomorrow morning (it's 2:24 AM ) I'll give it one last test, a good cleanup, and let you guys have at it.
If everything's as planned, for the next version after that I'll have a new welcome screen, and hopefully - though I'm promising nothing yet - 'read later'.

This is a new app I have written for Android that allows you to schedule uploads or downloads from your Dropbox.
For e.g. you can back up data from your device, or you can download a new playlist onto your device every morning. There are so many possibilities. Transfering data to/from your device has become so much easier.
Uses:
You create folder-pairs on your remote dropbox and your device. An upload or download is triggered at the pre-set time. In this way you can upload photos every night, or download music every morning. Or replicate your documents across all your devices.
You could set it up (with your credentials) on some one elses device to push files or updates, or retrieve data/photos etc, so it can be used for sharing common data.
The app does not do two-way syncing (which takes up far greater resources).

PhoneBackup:
Its a cool tool that can backup your SMS, Contacts and Call Logs. The good thing is that it backs it up as a CSV file. That way you can just open it and see all your contacts. What is every way more cooler, is that you can edit the CSV file and restore the edited data back to the phone. It is really useful, do have a look at it.

Yes, you can choose a whole album. The app supports folders and sub-folders.
In fact, even if all your songs are in the same folder, you can use the file filter to filter out your music (for e.g. a filter with "Linkin*Park*.mp3")
Yesterday I fixed a few more issues I was having with 'spaces' in folder names.
Let me know if you find any more issues!

Although, before this thread, the OP has only posted twice in the last year, so not exactly the most active Dev.
Is there anything else that can assuage my concerns?
I saw one of the Play Store comments mentioned "What, no OAuth??" Is this a concern?
Seriously, this app looks like almost EXACTLY what I've been hoping for. If it works, I will gladly buy a Pro version to support the Dev as soon as it's available.

I think I replied to your post on the Dropbox forums too. As you can see we both joined XDA one month apart, and have similar number of posts and thanks!
Anyway, the reason for not posting is that when I initially got an Android phone I started to get into modding etc so I would come to XDA for that kind of stuff. However, when I began serious development I started visiting app dev forums; thus the inactivity on XDA.

Dropbox API requires to use OAuth 1.0.
See here and here.
Therefore that comment is technically inaccurate. However, since API ver 1, Dropbox requires users to login via either the official Dropbox app or a Web Browser (and then return to the app). While this increases security in that you do not need to provide your username/password to my app (I can still access all your data once you grant permission), some people find it annoying and an unnecessary step (i.e. to leave the app to authenticate and then return back).
Either way, I plan to implement both authentication methods so this may ease your concerns too.
There will be a Pro version soon with many more added features. However first I need to iron out all bugs, and so far it is looking reasonably stable.

100 GB!!! Was that just referrals or did you win DropQuest 2012?
This means you can back up your phone all the time! However remember that the Dropbox API restricts uploads to 150 MB per file. So uploading for e.g. nandroid backups > 150 MB, or uploading large movies will fail and you may have to use the Desktop client (I dont know if the Web interface allows more than 300 MB) or a file splitter.
You can potentially put your whole music collection on Dropbox and download the albums you want only.

I now have implemented Dropbox Authentication through the Official Dropbox app/site, so you do not need to enter your username/password in my app anymore. This should be more secure than before.

A new version now uploaded. I hope this is crash free, I have fixed all stability issues and reported crashes!

- App now starts on boot so pipes are scheduled even on reboot
- Fixed crashes when transfers fail or are re-tried. Transfers are now retried 5 times before they fail.

Your software is great! I restate my intention to buy a Pro version as soon as it's available. Thanks for responding so rapidly by implementing alternate authentication methods.
I have several suggestions, I hope XDA is an appropriate venue for conversing.
Right away, I would request you implement Revision checking for uploading. I know that DropSpace had this capability, so it must be present in the DropBox API, even the older versions.
If I have 350 pics in my DCIM folder, and I to back them up to DropBox, which already has copies of the oldest 320, there's no need for me to re-upload all 350. It's a huge waste of bandwidth and time.
Maybe I'm using the wrong technical terms here, but that's the general idea. I'd say it's essential to an app like CloudPipes.
More suggestions to come, keep up the great work!

I have many suggestions coming in and they are all in the pipeline. Once I get all of the essentials, then I will move on to a Pro version.
As you said, revision checking is essential. This is my current priority and hopefully I will get an update out soon.

Awesome work on this app. Cloudpipes is the absolute best. Saves me countless hours and time with my Nexus 7 and the lack of external SD. I can now flash at will without ever worrying about losing data.
I would like to second the revision checking functionality. would be an awesome addition. I look forward to seeing it in a future release. I would like to add one more thing I would like to see as well. I would like the ability to exclude certian files and folders via checkbox or similar mechanism (default for new folders and files would always be on of course). But this would be extremely helpful because I do not need to backup the small directories here and there that apps automatically create (i have Titanium backup for apps & their data). While I can use the file size filter to make sure 1-2gb movies are not synced, there is no way (at least that I know of) to easily eliminate some of these smaller directories that are just causing clutter in my dropbox. I would like cloudpipes to work strictly for the data I have on my storage that I need.
Lastly I would like to see the current status of the transfer, eta at current speed, current transfer rate, all from the transfers tab of the app. I know there is a percent bar in the notification window, but I would like to see more info in app.
Otherwise awesome app... absolutely loving it and really stable, zero crashes. Would gladly pay for a PRO version!!!
edit: One small bug I just noticed. Well not really a bug but more a necessary feature improvement is the ability to refresh your main dropbox directory. I changed the name of my backup folder from "test" to something more appropriate and it seems the main window is not refreshing the dropbox and loading the new folder name.

Revision checking is coming. Its a bit more complicated that I initially thought so it will be a major update, however it will be very useful to conserving bandwidth.
Regarding exclusion, I will have to think how this will work. While the back-end implementation should not be hard, I dont know how I will ask the user to exclude folders in the UI and then store them. Nevertheless I have added it to my things to do (and it is growing!!!)

I dont see a better solution for this apart from the user refreshing that folder as they know they have changed it. However it seems that the official dropbox app detects this change immediately so they are polling again for the change hmmm...

Regarding this point, your update that you just pushed looks like it now includes a menu and a refresh button when viewing the dropbox. Maybe i am just dumb and missed it before. But I see it now and it fixes this!! Thanks if you did in fact add it!!

Regarding this point, your update that you just pushed looks like it now includes a menu and a refresh button when viewing the dropbox. Maybe i am just dumb and missed it before. But I see it now and it fixes this!! Thanks if you did in fact add it!!

It was always there You might have missed it. Note that the menu contents and the button in the action bar change depending on which tab(Pipes/Dropbox/Transfers) you are on.

Sorry for taking so long on this update, but I wanted to make sure everything was working okay.
I have released a major update, it will take a couple of hours to ripple through the Play store.
This now includes revision checking, so only files that have been modified locally or remotely are re-transfered. If the app does not detect any change in the files then it will not be transfered.
Also just in case the Settings menu now has a trouble shooting section, with an option to 'Clear sync data'. If the app starts to mess up the transfers then you can use this option to reset the sync data, so it will start afresh.
This time I have focused quite a lot on testing, and tried to remove all weird and obscure bugs. There were many reports of the files not being accessible, probably because either the sdcard was unmounted, connected to USB or wasnt ready at boot. I tried to fix more of these cases.
There were also some minor UI tweaks here and there.
The OneWaySync option is not yet enabled. I have to do some more work on it, but should not be long.

Background
I use Google Voice as my primary number, and it's been frustrating that Google has failed to add very many interesting (necessary?) features to their Google Voice app. In addition, they don't have a public API, so it's difficult for developers to work with it. I've been searching for solutions all over the interwebz since Google Voice was Grand Central.
I've been using this app for a few weeks, and have since reached out to the dev, offering help with testing and offer to possibly work with him on design aspects in the future.
Why I think this app is great
• One app to manage your SMS messages (Carrier & Google Voice)
• Google Voice popups and quick reply without another 3rd party app
• Uses your stock messaging database to store messages (backup apps work)
• Very nice to have a Google Voice alternative that actually works
The Futurree
In speaking with the developer, once all bugs are ironed out, he's got plans for future theme addons, more popup options, GV Message sync (difficult).. and possibly *optional* FB Messenger and Twitter DM integration. I've already themed myself a version which I'll post up.
The developer will also be adding LightFlow support soon.
Important Details
The app is a TRIAL, and subsequently is available through in-app purchase.
I'm posting this because I know you hardcore GV users would probably like to check this out... and we all know that Google Play store discovery is still terrible.
Current Bugs
The only bug I've encountered is, when a message is sent while in Landscape mode, it will be sent through your carrier. The dev has acknowledged this and it should be fixed within the next day or two. If you're on Gingerbread, it should work fine, but feel free to chime in if you have issues.
I've also read that MMS may have issues, especially if you're trying to send directly from the Gallery.

Tried it and it's a no-joy for me
I have a Samsung GT-i9100 International (SIM Free) with a pay-as-you-go AT&T GoPhone sim in it.
I just put Android 4.1.2 I9100XWLSE_I9100OXELS6_ALO.zip (I know how to use Odin,etc) and rooted it with CWM-SuperSU-v0.99.zip thru recovery and off the sd card. Works perfect, not I can us my TB Pro w/root on the phone,
and I got the phone working sweet (I am in the USA and did not want to wait for a OTA or KIES upgrade)
I have GrooVe IP to use Google Voice to make/receive calls over 3G/H+and avoid the $1.00 a day and $0.10 a min AT&T charges.
I text thru GV too. I only give out my GV # because honestly why would I use the carriers # and pay to use a regular phone.
I have looked all over to integrate the native text app into GV and I read that this app would do it.
It does not (for me). I basically have a stock ROM rooted with a IP telephone program on it and the data packages are $25 for 1 GB and then I buy a 5MB package for $5 every 30 days and the amount rolls over. So a cell phone for $5 a month, yeah, on AT&T, YEAH! but this app does not integrate with the stock/plain messaging app.
I have followed all the instruction, disable notifications,etc. as listed on the PLAY store and the website.
It is (from what I can tell) work with 4.1.2 because the screen shots he's got up there do not look like the one's I have and I did not see anywhere that it asked to use GV for native SMS.
So maybe someone has seen this, done this and got it working......

ok I guess I figured it out
This does NOT integrate into the EXISTING text app. It is separate entirely. So I just move the icon for the stock one from the menu bar and put this one down here. Disable in GV like it says and it works as described....
Guess i should have spent more time with it, good thing I got 3 different cell phones to work with to implement this.
I really want to save my $0.20 per message

Got it working it just replaces the native messaging app, works with GV and bam......free SMS :good::good::good:

How does this app know about new texts? Does it check directly or does it rely on GV notification?
Are the popups user definable? (Droid Notify comes to mind)
Is there a repeat reminder option? (Droid Notify comes to mind)
How much memory does it require while monitoring events? Is it a service or can it be easily terminated by the minfree manager?
How long is the trial?
I gotta go and read more before asking more questions..

I'm replying with Tapa talk, so bare with me
1. AFAIK, the app is dependent on the Google Voice app, which needs to be installed and configured. (See play store notes). It does not rely on GV notification, though.
2-3.Popups are not yet user definable, but I've spoken with the developer and have suggested this. Options in droid notify, notifierpro, and light flow are my inspiration
4. Memory as a cached process right now is 14MB. I'd have to check ROM Toolbox to see the actual events, but compared to other apps I've tried, it's relatively light and doesn't require extensive permissions. FWIW, I'm using a Note2.
5. The original trial was a small number of messages. I talked to the dev and he extended it. It could still be longer and I'm going to push for that. I bought it the first day tho.. I actually paid $8 . Lol. I highly recommended he lower it, and he did.. But totally worth it for me either way.

Sounds good. Although I do like the Droid Notify popups I can live with a simple taskbar notification. What is important (to me) is the ability to set reminders for every X minutes, ideally different first sms and voicemail. If the dev would consider adding a missed call reminder as well I could take another app out.

Not too bad, especially if I can remove or even or two things. I am on an HTC HD2 which is a bit memory starved with everything I am doing.

This is my first app (long time java dev, first time android dev) so I'm excited to get some XDA feedback =c) Hope I'm posting correctly. Also apparently I can't do links yet so sorry about that.
Why?
I got sick of composing a new email every time I wanted to send myself a note. I looked around, but couldn't find anything that did everything I wanted (at most I found one that used intents to pre-populate the "to" field). So I wrote mynderMail.

Elevator Pitch
The app will let you **send an email to yourself** as soon as you can type it out! First line of the message will become the subject of the email, and the rest will become the body.
**Material-ish Design!** I tried. I'm sure I didn't hit every guideline, but I feel like I got close.
There are **no ads** (though I am planning on a Pro version next year). This app is currently in beta - so let me know if you encounter any issues.

A: Yes and yes. But if you’re like me and you send yourself notes all the time, time savings of 50% make this app very useful. Sending from your email takes longer because you need to:
Open the email app (which takes longer to launch).
You have to hit compose.
Select yourself as recipient.
Type the subject.
Type the body.
Tap Send
Where as with mynderMail you just:
Open mynderMail.
Type your whole note in one textarea (including the subject).
Tap Send
Q: Can't I just use Evernote, Google Keep, Google Now, <insert your note taking app>...
A: You could. If you always go back and check your notes, sure. But sometimes you just need to get something somewhere where you know you'll see it and then sort it into the appropriate app. Some things end up in Evernote, or in an issue tracker (work or personal), sometimes it's a phone call, sometimes it's a follow up email, etc... Think of it as sticking a quick post it on your front door or somewhere else where you'll be sure to see it vs writing out a note and filing properly.
Q: I have an idea for a feature. Can you have the app do X?
A: Probably, though the Free version is fairly complete. Most of the new features will be added to the Pro version when it is released. You can send/post suggestions to me, and if it’s not already on the list and the suggestion makes it into the app, I’ll gift you a Pro version.

The app is great. Makes sense and works perfectly. But I think the app would benefit immensely from a widget wherein I can type the text directly and hit send. That way I dont even have to open the app. Can do it right from the lockcreen/homescreen. Alternatively, a permanent notification can also serve the same purpose, but I prefer the widget.

With a widget, I'd still have to open up some sort of activity since you can't type directly on the home screen, and since the app closes itself after send it amount to the same thing.
As far as a notification, I'm definitely considering it (also considering having a floating overlay a la "Snowball"/"Sloth Launcher" if i can figure out how to do it.) Currently I have it set up in my "Notification Toggle" which works out well

Huh, missed this one when doing my research, thanks. Looks like with this one though you have to enter your own mail server which is a bit of a barrier for entry.
The mail queue is a good idea that I already had on my list, as is sharing with the app.

I've since added an option for permanent notifications, as well as an option to share with the app (you can set it to send automatically or allow editing of the text before sending).

Those must have Apps that make life more enjoyable on your device

I was curious what the killer, must install apps are for everyone. I am not talking about Facebook, Instagram, or system apps that allow for rooting or managing space, but the Apps that make your life on your device much more enjoyable.

I'm surprised to be saying this but Microsoft's Arrow launcher is a treat on the Note 5. Looks classy on the large screen and its focus on usage patterns works quite well for me.

I came from Blackberry originally, and I got spoiled by the awesome word prediction and learning autocorrect. When I got my first Droid 2, I missed the smarter typing and I searched for a replacement. I bought SwiftKey when it was premium and never looked back. Through a Droid 3, RAZR HD, and now Note 5, it has learned how I type and saved me lots of embarrassment. And since I went premium back in the day, I get no ads. Ever.
If you're a family guy like me, Cozi Family Scheduler is also a must. With 2 teenagers, both spouses working, and all sorts of things to coordinate, Cozi makes it easy for all of us to stay on the same page without trying to flip through shared Google calendars. The widgets are useful on Note 5, but the typeface is very small on widgets.

In Australia currently the nova prime is only 20c I think it's best bargain app. Definitely worth it...been using it to replace touch wiz.

My brother uses and swears by Nova.
One of the reasons I prefer Android over iOS is the way that you can highly customize your phone/tablet to your desires.

Now I know this one also require the hardware...but I do recommend getting one.
I just got my gear vr...and it's really cool. My kids love them. There are a lot of free download too just like in playstore.

There are all kinds of Widgets available for these

Tasker. I freaking love this app. It automates almost everything on my phone:
-Silences my ringer and notification volume when I set the phone face down.
-When I receive a text, my TTS engine says "Sir, you have received a message from %sender" and if the contact isn't stored in my contact list, it replaces the %sender variable with "an unknown person"
-When I leave the house, it turns off my wifi, turns my ringtone and notification volume up, and turns Bluetooth on, but if Bluetooth doesn't connect in 7 minutes, it turns back off again
-When I get to work, it sets my phone on silent and texts my wife one of 5 random messages letting her know I'm at work
-When I get back home, it turns wifi back on and connects, speaks "welcome home, sir" and turns my notification and ringtone volume down a bit
-In the morning when I dismiss my alarm, it speaks one of 3 random "good morning" messages, and then proceeds to read off the weather for the day, tells me how many appointments I have, what they are, and when.
-When I plug headphones in, it displays a popup menu of apps that I use with my headphones (Pandora, youtube, any of my emulators)
-Controls my GPS so that it's only on when I need it, like navigating with Google maps or taking location-tagged photos, and then turns it back off when I'm done
-Reboots my phone once a week to keep the OS fresh.
There is literally nothing you can't do with this app and its plugins. I recommend it for everyone. Super steep learning curve, but there are tons of tutorials on line. 10000% worth the $3 it costs.

That was the idea lol. The nerd in me went and found the TTS engine that sounded the most like Iron Man's Jarvis, William from CereProc, and every time I program a speak action, I try and imagine how Jarvis would say it. I wanted my phone to be as much like a personal assistant as I could make it.
I also plan on creating a task so that, when I'm in the car and I receive a text, Jarvis will tell me that a text was received and ask if I want him to read it to me. If I reply "yes" he'll read the message then ask if I want to respond but if I reply "no" he'll ask if I want to be reminded of the text when I'm not driving. If I reply "yes" to responding, He'll listen for me to speak the message and then send it. If I reply "yes" to the reminder, when I get out of the car, he'll say "Sir, you still have # unread text message(s)"
I also want to do something similar with calls.
All you need is Tasker, AutoVoice and maybe AutoInput and AutoNotification.
