Howdy, I'm strongly debating getting the z3 as an upgrade from my Galaxy s3. I have my s3 rooted with all my apps backed up via TiBu. I know if you root the z3, you lose some of the camera features, so I'm curious about rooting it and then restoring it back to stock. I want to be able to root it so I can run my TiBu backups on it with all the data. If I do that, is there a way to restore the phone so that it's not rooted and has all the features back?

Currently no. You need to backup the TA partition first before unlocking the bootloader. But for that you need root. So you will have to wait for a root method that does not involve unlocking the bootloader.

What's the "TA Partition"?
I guess I shouldn't let this slight inconvenience deter me from getting the phone (I'll let the off contract USA price do that for me).

you can use Helium Backup. It does not require root. I used it to transfer my apps + appdata from my S3 to my Z3. Worked for almost all programs except some very few.

Its where the DRM keys are stored.
Backup your phone with Android's ADB backup (google it). Those backups can be restored on an unrooted phone.

as far as I remember sony disabled this feature - no adb backup for us.
Seems to work on my wife's Z3C.

Appoligies if asked b4 but is late and d8nt have band with tonight to go searching If I backup b4 rooting can I restore that backup after and the device be as is now but rooted
Your device would still have the custom recovery/unlocked bootloader,
But you would not have Superuser access.
To gain superuser access on that backup, just flash SuperSU v1.91 in recovery.
Hit that "thanks" button.
You can do that to some extent, but you will probably need to at least sign back into your accounts and rearrange the home screen to your liking. You can use something like this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2525026 (you can also do this manually with adb commands) or just one of the back up apps on the Play Store. Some are free, some are paid. Depends on how quick and easy you want the back up to go if you don't want to use the PC tool. Once you do that, then you can unlock the bootloader, root, then restore your stuff.

For me Helium Backup is a very good app that backups user apps and data, can be used with and without root. Titanium Backup is also very good but it requires root.
I never backup anything always good to start fresh. You could screw up something restoring from old data

If you are on the same rom, then it typically isn't much of an issue. Problems arise when restoring from different versions or different roms altogether.
hey i wonder if there is something similar to TWRP that can make a backup of the hole system and data files but without using TWRP (no root) is it possible without rooting? Can u do this via computer without rooting?
reason is cause i need to switch to another s7 and its a work phone so it's kind off not in the policies to root.

Adb backup or samsung cloud backup. But it won't be a complete backup like nandroid.

Smart switch will transfer "everything" over to the other s7, never used it though, you can also try helium backup since it can backup data.

My brother has a Z5 which he has been using for quite some time. Recently he's been wanting to root it and he's asked me to do it. From what I understand, since he's on MM, I'll need to downgrade his firmware to backup DRM files and unlock the bootloader and such, and this process will involve erasing all his data. My question is, is there any way to root without losing data, or failing that, is there any way to back up his apps/app data/conversations/contacts/etc prior to the process? TB doesn't seem to work without root. I noticed there was a built-in Xperia backup tool but I was unsure how good a job this did at backing up all app data and such. Thanks!
Have you tried Kingroot. Just downgrade to ? with flash tool and try Kingroot.

From the flashing I've done, in order to downgrade to LP, you're going to have to wipe all partitions to get the device to boot. You can try downgrading the firmware without wiping anything, but when I tried that I ended up stuck in a bootloop and the only way to resolve it was to flash the LP firmware and wipe everything.
So the short answer you're going to need to figure out a way to backup the data before you try to downgrade the firmware. That said, there is a tool that will backup the TA on firmware before the November patch, maybe you should try that first. Once you decide to unlock the bootloader, it will wipe all data so again, see if you can figure out a way to backup data before unlocking the bootloader.
Is there some data in particular you're trying to backup? A lot of stuff is saved to the cloud or there are other backup apps that might be able to backup certain data.
EDIT: Have you looked at Helium? I've never used it but it might be able to do what you're looking for.

Which threads were you looking at? so I can point you in the right direction.
In the mean time I would not reboot your phone as you will more than likely relock your bootloader.

Try this thread it is a bit more up to date. It includes info about RMM state and has a link to the latest zip file. As for rooting I would suggest using magisk.
Also use:
Latest Odin 3.13.1
Latest twrp 3.2.3.2 for the s8+
Latest no-verity-,opt- encrypt ver 6.0
As for the data wiping issue it is necessary to format data in twrp . For backing up apps/data you could try smart switch or an app from playstore. I generally use twrp for my backups but I do have titanium backup as well but it does require root.

Helium does not backup all apps data (some yes and some no)
Smart switch does not backup any apps data (only backup and restore the apps without the data)
so how you managed this (Smart Switch for backup and restore data) or you mean the apps without its data (settings and games levels)?
Which steps and files exactly you used to root? did you wipe every data on phone?
Going from a rooted phone using FlashFire to backup the entire phone to a non rooted S10+ is a little depressing knowing the phone is not rooted and I can't use Flashfire.
Spending days to configure this s10+ i can't imagine going through this again. I would rather go back to my S6.
What is the best method to backup non rooted phones to get as close to a comprehensive image backup and not just pics, contacts, etc. I mean apps, app settings, android settings and more?

If there is a TWRP for your model number of S10+, you can flash TWRP on the device then use TWRP to create a nandroid backup.

TWRP does not require rooting the device, it does require an unlocked bootloader, though.
If your bootloader is locked, you're out of luck on a comprehensive backup, the best you could hope for is to backup just your user data, user apps and their app data.

ADB can be used without root to backup some of your data.
Do a Google search for:
"ADB backup and restore"
Titanium Backup at the PlayStore also has some features that can be used without root.
The Google backup feature in system settings does a good job of backing up apps, data, contacts and settings. There is also a method to use Google/Gmail to backup text messages.
Certain user apps, such as WhatsApp have their own tools that are used to backup and restore their specific data and databases.

Doesn't helium use adb, it's been ages since I even considered using non root tools for backup.
