Rom/Kernel independent Reboots - ONE Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys,
ive tried different roms (stock cm11s, mahdi, droidkang) with different kernels (stock, franco, ak).
I have completely wiped my device and set up everything new.
Still im getting reboots every now and then.
Mostly it happens to me while im surfing with chrome, but it also happened in the gallery, while watching movies and so on. Never had a problem while gaming.
Last_ksmg always says "kernel panic", followed by "failed to stop secondary cpus".
Please see the linked last_ksmg files.
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/16054199/last_kmsg6

Any help is highly appriciated, im getting really frustrated...

Are you using any kernel apps? What other apps are you using? Are you running Xposed?

The only app worth mentioning is lightflow, and i have changed dpi to 380 with texdroider.
thanks fir your reply

Try reflashing everything through fastboot. Each individual partition, just to make sure everything is clear and wiped.

I was having reboot issues will using both DPI changer and textdroider from the playstore. I would suggest getting rid of textdroider DPI and instead manually change it. Go into your file manger then system/build prop and look for LCD.density. It fixed my rebooting issues running Jedi Open Source rom.

Hey guys,
i have fastboot flashed the stock images of 25r, 33r and 38r, and even without installing one single app or changing any system settings, i get reboots.
Any ideas left, or is my hardware defect?

Reboots are usually on the software level, but 38R actually had reboot problems. Best if you installed a custom kernel and tweaked it yourself, say AK.

Well, i have tried almost every possible rom-kernel-modem combination, including stock images with fastboot. I dont know where this could be a software problem...

Yes, but I and a couple of friends get those reboots too. It's a common problem, not easily diagnosed. If your last_kmsg gets written to, it's saying that a configuration has crashed and the software itself is requesting a forced reboot.
If the last_kmsg has nothing inside then it's obviously a hardware issue.

Hmmmm...
You say i should set up the ak kernel until it works on my device ... I have no clue what all these detailed settings, apart from mhz and voltage mean - can u recommend some "safe" settings for me?

After you install ak, install UKM (flashable zip in recovery) and then install Synapse from the Play Store. Then go into Synapse and swipe the drawers to see these options.
CPU:
Set a safe non overclocking frequency
Governor: slim
Hotplug: CPU Boost by CyanogenMod
GPU Governor: msm-adreno-tz
Memory: Drop Caches Enabled
USB Fast Charge Disabled
Log Creation disabled.

Thanks for your help man, i still get reboots, im back at my nexus5 and wait if someone from the opo support answers me ... Frustrating.

have you the problem on all ROms after updating to R38? Some ppl are reporting that after R38 Update even other ROm Versions does the Random Reboot Bug....

Android is upgrading. Every boot. ART only

Having just rooted and unlocked boot loader, my N5 is giving the "android is upgrading" message for 80+ apps (half the usual) on EVERY reboot. This behaviour is only seen with ART runtime. Not with Dalvik. It was also not seen when on ART in stock form. Running Franco r14 kernel with stock rom. Any ideas?

Thats how it is every boot it has to pre compile the code for apps
Hmm...but in pre root form, this only happened the first time after selecting runtime. Now its happening every reboot! Is this supposed to be normal for a rooted phone?

I don't see that issue on my s2 skyrocket running 4.4 art. I'm not running art on my n5. I'm guessing it's an issue with the franko kernel, but that's just a guess
This happens to my N5 as well. Omni 12/01 nightly + Franco r14

chill out guys, this is normal behavior when using ART.
This is not normal behavior at all on stock ROM. When you switch to ART, it only does the upgrade/compile thing on the first boot. Having it redo it after every reboot is probably a compatibility issue with the ROM you are running.

That's my recollection as well. It still is on stock ROM. But it looks like other people who have rooted are facing issues that might have arose from kernel or app issues.
I have already wiped cache and rebuilt dalvik fwiw. Also uninstalled titanium backup while no weird odex files are noted. Only Franco kernel left as last data point but I wanted to see if others faced this problem before taking the plunge to reinstall stock kernel

It does not happen on stock rooted for me either. I would suggest returning to stock rooted to use ART. According to Omni threads they are in nightlies so stuff is expected to be wrong.
Fwiw. I've flashed stock kernel, reflashed the patched libart.so (ie. Whatsapp compatibility fix) , reinstalled whatsapp. Still no joy.
Ah... from According to:
https://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=61916
The problem is identified as an extra unbalance check between MonitorEnter / MonitorExit JVM instructions, which ART does and Dalvik doesn't. Some apps (such as Whatsapp) fail to have those balanced.
The fix will be probably fixed in AOSP sooner than later...
Sooo ... everybody relax and have a cup of tea (me included) :good:
Hmmm... sorry for the bad news but the problem discussed in that thread is unrelated with yours. We were discussing the (initial) whatsapp incompatibility.
BTW: Using ART here (Nexus 4), absolutely no problems now
it will depend on your apps. this is normal behavior. my n7 doesnt go through it, but my n4 does. they have different apps installed. my n5 goes yhrough it as well(but only 3 apps upgrading on a reboot). its fine if you want to freak out over it, but in reality it is normal.
I have 80 apps upgrading on reboot..and these are pretty standard apps.... This is quite a mysterious situation.
Good to know its happening. Perhaps next ota will address this...

my nexus 4 has 92 apps that upgrade after every reboot while on ART. 92 apps, out of 183 apps.
I’m using ART. Running Purity ROM with ElementalX. No long boot issue. I did have a long boot with apps optimization when I switched to ART the first time, but since then it boots normally and quickly.
Updated to 4.4.1. Had to flash stock boot and system IMG along the way. Updated, rooted and now it seems fine. Fast reboot with no data loss!

i am running stock 4.4.2 on N5 with bootloader unlocked and after each reboot i face the same cache rebuilt thing (android is upgrading) for all the user applications i have. Is it normal for stock rom too? have you seen any one on stock who is having otherwise?
I have this problem on my sony xperia sp running cm11, but it is happening since 5 days. Maybe it is the new version of a custom kernel, or link2sd.
Nope it's not normal. What else have you installed or flashed?

[Q] Hardware issue?

Does anyone have a problem with random "pauses" while using apps? It's totally not noticeable for applications that aren't continually running animations (ie: kindle, text scrolling) but becomes evident when doing thins such as:
- recording video (the "pause" will cause the recording to stop randomly for both continuous and time lapse)
- playing games (will cause the game to go to the pause screen)
- tasker programming (I think this is affected because tasker will randomly close itself without a FC dialog, profiles and tasks seem okay)
I turned on debugging to see if it was a dirty screen or anything, but the touch coordinates don't change at all when the "pause" happens. Anyone have an idea how I can fix this? It is rather crippling to the N5.
I am rooted and I have seen this problem on all roms (and I believe I noticed it on stock too...)
I use a ballistic case, if anyone else has had problems with it...
Thanks in advance!
Using N5 on Carbon + Franco kernel
I guess no one's ever had this problem before? =[
Have you tried factory reset? Fixes most problems. Could be Franco's kernel has a bug in the latest release.

I've tried out a few roms (factory reseting and cache clearing between each one) to see if it was any one problem, but whether AOSP or CM based, I still have the problem =/

Do you mean stock + unrooting? I think I remember having the problem back then, but I don't quite remember before I rooted...I'll try going back to stock w/ root first and see if it's still happening. Thanks!

Yes follow the link in the general to go back to complete stock and that will eliminate anything and everything that could be an issue related to software.
For what it is worth, what method did you use to root?

Hmm, I think it worked. I haven't tested it out for lengthy periods of time but I haven't noticed any pausing anymore! =]
I followed the unroot instructions to return to stock. Although I didn't relock the bootloader.
Then I booted up stock and it seemed like it works fine.
I reinstalled CWM recovery through adb (same as I did the first time) and proceeded to reflash
It seems like the problem is gone now on custom ROM as well. Interestingly enough, if I nandroid restore my old backup, I do get the problem again.
Is there something different between reflashing stock part and wiping from factory/data reset + system partition format + wipe cache + wipe davalik?
Thanks for your help guys! I was sure before that it was hardware since I had the problem on stock w/ root, but thankfully it's not a hardware problem! =]

Reboots after changing wallpaper

Hi, I am running Franco kernel #53, Carbon rom 4.4.3, Xposed framework and Greenify. After I install the kernel, it immediately breaks 5 of my apps, and I have to reboot and reinstall them, but that is a tiny problem. The more annoying one is every time I change my wallpaper the device soft reboots.I have tested and found that it hasn't anything to do with the undervolting. This wasnt happening with the stock kernel.
Suggestions?
I've heard wallpapers getting changed after a reboot, but it's the first time I'm seeing a device getting rebooted after changing the wallpaper
Backup Xposed and remove it, restart your phone and then try changing the wallpaper?? May be one of the modules is conflicting with it??

Nope, Xposed isn't the problem either. As soon as I install franco's kernel the reboots occur. Maybe the rom has changed something and became incompatible..... maybe I should just wait for the next kernel version.
Alright, did a clean install and everything is fine.

Are u using a kernel with custom values like UV? You can use a logcat from your PC to identify the cause of your RRs.

If it ain't solved yet here's this, I had the same issue when mid way throughout anything it would randomly reboot at random times. I found the cause and it was the cpu govner. I changed it from the govner I set it too long ago (on demand) and changed it to interactive and change the clock values back to default. That's what fixed my random reboots.

Hi,
I have been running Mahdi on my OPO for a couple of weeks now and recently updated it. Since then i seem to have an issue where the lock screen becomes mostly unresponsive. i have to reboot the phone and when it asks if i want to it struggles to acknowledge me hitting the yes button.
Any ideas how to fix this?
Thanks

I was just wondering if there was some way I could stop my phone from randomly turning the screen on in my pocket or when i pick it up? I've turned off double tap to wake and I'm running Mahdi.
Thanks for the help

Using Mahdi 2.81009/ak65unified
Some issues I have:
clicking hyperlinks will always ask 'select chrome, browser, etc' every single time
holding down the home button for recent apps doesnt always show all the apps that are running and I have to open again to check if they were really closed
screen sometimes flickers drastically and it will be fixed after reboot
connection drops for 30 secs at least after disconnecting wifi (I know this has nothing to do with mahdi though since it doesn't come with a modem)
any help would be appreciated!

So... select chrome and then press always instead of just once.
Why are you closing apps that are running in the background? Android takes care of handling the processes. You're practically "task killering" them and its a bad idea to do that.
Try another kernel.
Modem has nothing to do with wifi, thats all in the kernel. Try another kernel that contains the new wifi driver (e.g. franco or ak)
Update your ROM to 10/13.

Thanks @zephiK.
Yes, I have always clicked 'Always' lol I thought I didn't have to mention the obvious.
I'm closing the apps in the background cuz of my OCD. I know it's similar to task killing them but .. just my thang u know. Ill try to cut it out since you said it's bad but it frees up memory and it's still legit to close a program like that no? Unless you're telling me there's another way to close apps?
I'm still very new to Android; @nicholaschum helped me transitioned from iphone.
Unix/Linux/Android works different than Windows. There is a saying 'unused RAM is wasted RAM'. OK if it goes down to less than 100 MB it might be a bit low (garbage collection is probably not working well), but mainly better not touch it.

Very nice rom! Thank you for it!
Is it possible to change the heads-up blaclist to whitelist? Or maybe user decidable? Like on heads-up xposed module.
I'm used to whitelist on Carbon on a different device. I want to define the 4-5 apps which from I want to receive heads-ups, and from the rest of apps I don't want. With blaclist it is hard to do.
Thanks

After a night, I rebooted my phone in the morning. It entered the rom normally however there is no access to the storage, no cell network, no wifi, clock is set to 1830. All apps installed are there but not working properly with no access to storage and network.
The storage can be accessed in the recovery mode.
Things i have done to try solving the problem:
1. Delete cache and Dalvik in recovery. Reboot. Same.
2. Clean install the mahdi rom. Now it will boot into the page where i can choose language but i cannot do anything. It will reboot itself at that page.

Reflash stock CM11S, it's the best way to fix corrupted partitions. Not just through the recovery, but by doing around 8 to 10 fastboot flash commands according to partition details.
