Best rom nexus 5, - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello, im looking for good rom, smooth, fast, stabile like rock. No crashes, less bugs, and hope no random shutdowns or reboots. I cant find one, tell what you think.

Sounds like you've tried a lot of them. I run stock 4.4.4 and it's been the best for me.

It's hard to answer if we don't know what you've already tried and why each didn't measure up.

Stock is what you're after then.
Plus before the wannabe forum police all start to chime in and shout, best threads aren't allowed. Expect a mod to shut this down very soon.

Oh dear... I dread to think of the threads.
@ OP
Stock still is the best option though :good: - Or try a stable ROM like Slim, Paranoidandroid, Vanir, Rastakat.

I had some problems with stock, random shutdowns, cant find reason for that, but shutdowns mosly happen when phone is fully charged

Yep. The "no best threads" sticky was just recently removed.

Sorry about this best, didnt know that, but thats ok, i didnt know how to tell that what rom do i want, so i used best

Bizarre behaviour, tried a fresh flash on a factory image?
like I said, give Slim, Omni, Paranoidandroid, rastakat or Vanir or something similar a whirl. Rastakat is close to stock, as is PA and Omni, Slim and Vanir are a bit more customisable. All are good ROMS though. So have a tinker and see which you like. Of course there are more stable one's also, like Purity, OptiPurity and a few others.

It's probably app related. I've never had a random shut down on stock

One persons best ROM will be another persons worst ROM. So there is no such thing as a "best ROM". Stick with stock and, for customization, root and use Xposed. It's pretty much your safest bet.

Liquid is a good ROM, but it can have issues due to the constant development on it. I personally have never had issues with it, but in their thread a lot of people do have issues. Have a scan thru the last 5-10 pages of their thread and decide which build is suitable for you if you like it.

PA has changed dramatically now FYI, it's completely different to what it once was. However if you don't like PA then that obviously isn't the choice for you currently. Give Slim a whirl, Fast, smooth, stable and their thread is the best one on XDA also. And support like no other.

Will test it

Yes best threads are allowed....but the bottom line will always be, see what's best for you, cause everyone has their own needs and tastes.
Start flashing. ?

For me the best ROM is stock without all Google apps and with Motorola's gallery.

Best ROM is kind of subjective....
Right about now, most have the same features active display and such. Beanstalk, PAC man, cataclysm, purity, Mahdi, and a few I'm missing are really great. Well to me that is...

[Q] Help choosing ICS ROM for Skyrocket

Hello all,
Wondering if you guys can help me decide whether to flash an ICS ROM or not?
I have my Skyrocket tweaked and set up perfectly. It contains...
Version: 2.3.5 (refuse to upgrade to 2.3.6 due to many issues I see some are having)
Kernel: 2.6.35.11+ (excellent "stock-ish" ROM from romracer)
Launcher: Go Launcher EX
Phone is rooted and like to use CWM.
With that said, I'm wondering what is the best option to try? My main concern is obviously performance and battery life. I have spectacular battery life right now and don't want to lose it by flashing an ICS ROM.
Perhaps something that will work with the romracer kernel? For example, something that would still allow me to use CWM and MUST also support boot animations and BLN support. That is a must for me, as I use it to tweak my battery life quite a bit.
Anyways,
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
--mike
No ics for you, then.

If you decide that you can live without the BLN and overclocking then make a nandroid and give smooth ice a try, skyics is also good I hear.
I've tried smooth ice for like a month almost and it is really stable and the battery was good too.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727
If you do not have the heart for glitches, ICS may not serve you well. There is no real benefit that I can see unless you are a hardcore phone tweaker. I am always debating whether to just go back to stock GB myself !!!
BUT if you really have the itch, the safest is mhx's full bloat stock. I used that for a long time, and it is very - relatively- stable.
here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1570498&highlight=full+bloat
My 4 cents....
Close eyes. Now say eni mini miny Moe! Just flash them all. U could use the experience and see everyone's roms instead of asking.... hrllo

you gotta wait till kernel source is released before you'll have bln and oc but maybe try smooth ice if you want touchwiz but id try cm7 if you haven't or cm9 its all alpha buy lots have used it as a daily driver... I just hate touchwiz
CM9 Skyrocket
Thanks...
Thank you all for the feedback.
This is what I though! lol
I will stick with GB for now. I get amazing battery life, is extremely stable and love all the extra features after tweaking.
Was just curious....
Thanks again,

Battery Life & Stability
Thanks to the OP for this thread. I'm in a similar boat, but am just looking for the most stable custom ROM with the longest battery life. Coming from rooted Gingerbread, I've setup my ICS exactly the same (debloated and lean), and my time between charges was cut by 1/3 at least.
From my limited research, the CM9 Beta 1 ROM sounds to have excellent battery life and great stability. However, I'm open to suggestions! One question I have though, is I keep hearing folks talk about "nightlies". That that mean it requires nightly updating? Thanks in advance.
I've been using PTSD's AOKP ICS ROM and I love it. I've mixed that with InstigatorX's Kernel and my battery life is amazing. I'm an Android noob, but I'm digging this setup.

the word nightly means that it's scheduled to auto build a new version with any fixes made during the day... It wont auto update your Rom though you have to manually install it
It is a very easy process though. you download the new nightly and reboot to recovery: wipe system and wipe cache then install, wipe dalvik and fix permissions and reboot if you installed any mods like inverted apps or gps fix or dpi changes they need to also be addresses after the first boot
Because i don't like setting it up all the time i just install the new nightly weekly
CM9 Skyrocket
I actually *just* restored to Gingerbread today, after months of using Cyanogenmod 9's official and nightly releases, as well as the InstigatorX kernels.
My battery life was okay, but for all the extra bells and whistles, they seem to get the basics wrong, unfortunately :/ I still couldn't send texts larger than 160 characters without splitting them up, and they'd always arrive out of order, or not at all. Other apps wouldn't behave properly either, and my mobile network connection seemed to change/drop just from looking at it.
So CM9 looked promising, but still has a ways to go, and it's rated as one of the better ROMs for this phone. I didn't even want to try CM10, because their bug list is still bigger than CM9.
Can I ask where you got your romracer kernel? I'll have to give that a try. Also I'm looking to replace the current radio with something better.
I had to rebuild from scratch because somehow my gingerbread backup was corrupted. I used Bonestocketeer's ROM ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1357274 ) and the only issue I've had with it is I can't change the LTE/HSPA/GSM setting in Mobile Networks to just HSPA/GSM. I was able to with my original ROM, and that seemed to help battery life.
Thanks again for your post!

At least tell him why. You report hounds are all the same.
To OP, james has reported you because the title and nature of this thread suggests asking which rom is the best, which is prohibited in this forum because "which x is best" threads can usually promote flaming and whatnot. It's like asking who likes the Yankees, and then fans of other teams riot about how their team is the best.
This comes as a surprise as I see you've been a member for a while. Assuming that other forums have similar rules to the SR forum.

My recommendation would be NexusMod, then. It features the proprietary performance tweaks available in the TouchWiz ROMs, so it's faster than Cyanogenmod, but it has a lot of theming that makes it look and feel closer to AOSP. There are still some ugly elements of TouchWiz that exist, but it's a big improvement over a lot of the other TouchWiz-based ROMs.
For sure, CM9 has more features and tweaking options, and a more consistent AOSP look to it, but it's slower than NexusMod and still has some very minor bugs. It does, perhaps, offer you a few more options in how to save battery, though.
I have to say, though ICS is a massive improvement over GB and we have stable, mature ICS ROMs available. I would strongly advise upgrading, but if you're concerned about bugs, stick with a light TW-based rom like NexusMod.

It's an opinion thread. Maybe someone who hasn't tried one of the roms yet will get some incite from others and decide they wanna try it. It seems like every thread on xda nowadays has someone that feels the need to tell the op that their thread is wrong or not wanted. If you don't like it, don't read it.

Polls like this also turn picking a ROM into a popularity contest, which it should not be. Just because a ROM is popular, does not mean it will be the best for your needs. I've had devices where the lesser known ROM by a new dev ran much smoother for me and suited my needs much better than the super-popular one.
These threads also encourage laziness. Just read through the ROM threads, pick the ones that look like they fit your needs, and try them out. Looking for a few recommendations to get started is not a bad idea. But to just pick one ROM based on a thread like this, and not try others is robbing yourself of trying out some pretty cool stuff.
Asking for the "best ROM" is always going to be problematic. There is no "best" ROM for all needs or preferences. "Favorite" would be a much better word to have used.
I don't personally have a particular dislike for this thread, just throwing it out there.

Also, the same ROM will perform differently on different phones. Just because 50 other people have wonderful experiences with a ROM doesn't mean it's not going to behave strangely on yours. How you use it and the apps you have installed can have a big effect on your experiences.

Hello everybody!
So i'd like to check out what roms people use and why.
Me personally i'm practically stuck with stock RUXLF3 because of the GPS is only working with it. I'll look into that later.
I've switched out Browser and Email apps for AOSP ones because they're graphically more appealing and the GUIs are more effective.
But if it weren't for the GPS issue i would be on Embryo 6.
What roms do you run and what makes you choose the one you choose?
Mine is slimbean forever. I chose it because I was using orthus 5 and was having too many lockups and freezes. I stay on it for 1 (well 2, stability) reason only. I don't have to turn my data on and off to send or receive mms. Major turn on for me as its a pita to do that as I'm on lowest data plan I'm required to have (I would have no data plan if I could since I never use it).

Ah that's ok because this isn't a best of thread, it's good for research purposes. You're not supposed to list all of your favourites, you're supposed to say what your daily driver is no matter if you like it or not and share with us the reason for it being your daily driver. So one rom per person that is.

gps shouldnt be an issue, sometimes it needs to relearn, just give it time when switching radios, flash it twice no cable plugged in, or are you talking about roms in general, so yup you should look into it
i guess we'll wait for the mod to decide if this is a "best rom" thread, now let me see, which rom should i pick?
It'll be interesting to see what the MODs decide.
To me it's a vote so the OP isn't asking anyone to tell him what to use. He's set this up in such a way that if people do vote it might be beneficial in the future. When people open "best" threads they could just be linked to this and the thread closed. Then those people can see what percentage of votes each ROM received. I'm by no means saying that whatever ROM that get's the most votes it the "best" for any individual but it's a good baseline for noobs.
I personally hope that mods don't close this; don't think of it as a best of thread, think of it as figuring out what the community happens to be running. I'm gonna need to pick a new ROM soon since the one I'm on is discontinued. It'd be nice to see what people have so far.
It would be perceived as a "best of" thread mostly due to the fact that it may cause people to compare and possibly become a debatable subject. But let the mods decide.

I agree in principle, but I just don't see this thread ending any other way than two morons fighting to the death over ROM A vs. ROM B.
I'm not planning on changing the ROM on my Rocket anytime soon; kinda like the one I've got. I've also settled into a daily driver on my Note II; been a very boring month or so in terms of flashing.

There is no objective best ROM test
People have preferences based on their usage (a gamer, for example, would want a snappy rom as opposed to me who wants battery life -which again is a function of your usage)

Recommendation for a Newb

Hi there I am a newb to ROMs and I have what I think is an easy question.
My girlfriend has a Nexus S which has gotten incredibly slow lately.
There dont seem to be extra apps running on the phone (i tried uninstalling almost all of the apps) so I assume I need to try a different rom/kernel (everything is stock of whatever was pushed to her phone).
I dont think she would care about extra features but would just want it reliable.
I really dont know what to install. If it should be some paired down rom/kernel, A new one, or older one.
I imagine a newer kernel (i think they have trim??) and paired down would be better.
Although using and old build for reliability/speed would be completely acceptable too.
Are there any recommendations? I am pretty lost.
Thank you so much!
Using Slim atm
Pretty smooth if you don't enable google now.
However the 512mb ram is really killing the phone, takes ages to load apps let alone multitask

do the themes affect speed/ram usage?

Themes/theming can affect speed/ram.. If you want a rom to stand the test of time; MDO, Rasbeanjelly, Hellybean, Slimbean (4.1.2).. If you upgrade past this, the 4.2.2's are laggy and ram hungry.. 4.2.2's are also not as stable. Jellyshot and Rasbeanjelly are the most stable/ram friendly 4.2's... Use stable/or stock kernels and don't overclock!!! Once you set up the phone, it's a phone, all the "settings" don't make the phone any more or less a phone...
Sorry folks, recommendation for best rom threads get closed, why? because history shows that almost all of them become arguments over what rom is "better" and essentially, that is something that can only be determined by individual users.
Members are expected to read the thread in development to determine what is "best" for them.

Help choosing a ROM.

There's so many Roms here it's hard to choose a place to start. Can I get some suggestions of a good stable ROM that brings improvements over stock as well as everything working like cellular stuff.I just feel like a lot of the Roms seem like they are very similar and I'm not sure what to try. Thanks.

It's all a matter of personal preference.
But, personally, I would suggest BeerGang. It's still technically in the Alpha stage, but I've been running it for the past day and have been completely satisfied. No random reboots, no random FCs, and it has a good deal of features without having too many -- I'm not a fan of ROMs like BeanStalk, CM, etc because there are so many different options to tinker with, and many of them affect the stability and speed of the ROM. The dev (benjamin.j.goodwin) is consistently providing support for it, and I only seeing it getting better.
After BeerGang I'd recommend Purity. I was a long time fan of Purity for all of the same reasons I like BeerGang. Purity is also past the Alpha stage, and offers a little more in features than BeerGang does as of now. It comes built with BusyBox installed (if you're into script optimization,) and is a solid experience for me during my short time using it.

OK thanks a lot I'll check those out. I know everyone says it's up to preference and I agree but with the nexus 5 there are way too many roms to just try them all out lol so it'd be nice to have somewhere to start. So do either of those have the themer app like from cm? Either way I'm gonna try it but just curious. I think I'll try purity first and see if I like it.

I do like the looks of beergang it is on my list to try. If you want aosp style the big one is CM. There are a lot of ROMs that use cm as a base. I like paranoid personally or pacman. If you want something newer try omni it is well written runs almost flawless and has a write up here on xda. It has some unique features as well like double window.

Cataclysm with Franco Kernel runs great.

Cataclysm with Bricked kernel and stock kernel ran well.
Currently I'm running Beanstalk and bricked.
Thanks guys I know threads asking for the best ROM aren't allowed but I was just asking for suggestions so I can know what to start trying because there are too many similar ones. I didn't mean to make an unallowed thread. Sorry about that.

Stability along with WiFi Direct & OTG Support?

There's so many Roms here it's hard to choose a place to start. Can I get some suggestions of a good stable ROM that brings improvements over stock as well as everything working like cellular stuff.I just feel like a lot of the Roms seem like they are very similar and I'm not sure what to try. Thanks.

Coming from a Samsung Galaxy S3 on T-Mobile and running Wicked ROM to the Nexus 5. Overall, it's a nice phone, but a few little things I miss are:
WiFi Direct - it's in there on KitKat, but no way to share anything unless you use/purchase separate apps that are incompatible with each other? What gives?
OTG support - I know they want to push "the cloud" on everybody and I knew going in that this phone didn't have microSD support, but planned on using an OTG cable to swap out pics/videos, etc but again this is not usable unless you purchase another app?
I was hoping that for once with a Nexus phone, that I'd be able to avoid the root/Custom ROM/update/repeat cycle, but these missing features are a big disappointment for me.
Anyone know which Custom ROM(s) include the features I mention above, along with good support and stability? Or is this the curse of living on "the bleeding edge?"
I look forward to your suggestions!
