Swap File on Internal SD - Good or Bad? - T-Mobile LG G2x

Hello Everyone,
I followed the instructions from this link, using Swapper for Root and Swapper 2 to install a 512k swap file on my internal SD. I http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1575681 My G2x, running rooted GB 2.3.4 with Faux 014b kernel, seems to run better and is definitely less laggy. However, I've read here that it is not a good idea to put swap files on the internal SD as it only has about 10,000 write cycles and could wear out: http://android.stackexchange.com/questions/25772/how-can-i-use-my-internal-storage-as-extra-ram .
Do any of you have any advice, opinions or experience on the subject?
Best,
Jon

Update
Still seems to be working fine and had significantly de-lagged my G2x.....

I have increased my swap file size to 1gb and changed my launcher to a small and fast launcher called Hola Launcher. It continues to work well.

[Q] Rooted, now what?

Hi, I just used superoneclick to root my LG P500, and I presumed I could then removing junk apps and copying everything over to my SD card, however it seems I can't?
I installed busybox but no idea what that does! Am I missing something as I don't know what to do next?
Thank you.
Use link2sd

Ok, just installed it and it does delete crap, and gives an option to move to SD card but it just hangs and then says 'Failure' - invalid install location.
Does the SD card have to be formatted in a different way? If so, how?

i think you have rooted your phone but your still on stock rom
you should move to custom roms now
but if your sticking to stock rom for now
for moving app's to sd card try this guide
http://lgp500-optimusone.blogspot.in/2011/10/how-to-moveinstall-apps-to-sd-card-on.html
I'm using stock ROM yes. I think I need to format the SD card to ext2 or something. I only want to be able to copy everything to SD.
I tried making a partition as it says in the instructions, but the SD card is recognised as a 1GB card now in my phone rather than the 16GB it is.
It said to create a 14GB partition in ext2 format in order to transfer all apps to the card. If I do that though, 1GB isn't enough for all my music! Confused.

Now do one thing.Format your sd card to fat32 and then repartition it using recovery and select 1 gb (not 14) ext 2,3 or 4(ext4 preferred).

But surely, all I'm doing is partitioning the card so that 1GB is set to ext 2, meaning only 1GB of the card can be used for apps that can't normally be stored on the FAT32 partition?
Ok - since my last post, I did what you said so partitioned 1GB ext 2. When I open Link2SD, I get asked to choose the file system of my SD cards second partition. I can choose between:
ext2, ext2, ext4, and FAT32. Whatever I select, I get an error message - 'Mount script cannot be created. mount: Device or resource busy. ext2 maynot be supported on your device. Try FAT32 on the second partition'.
I then choose FAT32 and it says 'mount script cannot be created. mount: invalid argument'.
Just rebooted the phone and Link2SD doesn't ask me the above anymore, but now when I try again to move the Facebook app to the SD card, I still get the error:
Failure: pkg: /data/app/com.facebook.katana-1.apk Failure [INSTALL_FAILED_INVALID_INSTALL_LOCATION]
In yet 'Whatsapp' which usually has to stay on the phones memory has no problems being sent to the SD card in Link2SD.
Any ideas please?
Ok this is weird... I formatted the card again to FAT32, and then tried transferring whatsapp to the SD card and it worked.
Uninstalled Facebook and reinstalled it from the play store and that also can be moved! It's really strange but it works. I thought you had to partition the card.
I do have other questions though. Can you keep the stock rom, and still have everything you download auto install to the SD card?
What is busybox for? Do I need it?
What can I do to speed the phone up now?
Thanks.
Busybox is necessary....no need to partition the card......the failure error may occur if u are moving something from rom to external sd....first move it to internal....to speed up ur phone change the kernel...
.thundervn kernel is best for stock...make sure u hav clockworkmod recovery installed....if not....download rom manager from play store....

Just so you all know, I only want to use stock rom. I don't want to be messing about with custom roms.
The SD card isn't partitioned, and 95% of all apps seem to be going across to the SD card no problems, but I get that 'failure'message with an app called 'proboards' which I downloaded from the play store - any reason why? LinkSD does say it requires a partition but it says that for all the other apps that transferred across fine.
I've also noticed my internal memory is still slowly decreasing even when apps are being transferred to SD - what can I do to stop this?
Finally, I bought 'SetCPU' app for my phone. Not 100% how to use it but when I set the min and max cpu speed to the max my phone can offer, my phone seems much quicker - is this ok to do?
Thanks

You can try the ressurection rom . Its stock rom with some little tweaks dat increase the speed , battery life and overall performance. .. it also allows u to u set-cpu to do what its meant to do. .. over clock your device so that u can enjoy the games that seemed to lag .. and the rom also supports moving apps to the SD card

Really to get the full benefit out of rooting you'll want to play with some custom roms but as for the cpu setting the minimum higher will just cause your battery to drain really fast. What you want is a custom kernal that will allow you to overclock the cpu past 600 on the max end.

Ok, so at the moment I have transferred all my apps to the SD card. How would I go about flashing it then?
What rom should I use?
How will having a new rom stock the internal memory from being eaten up? And why is it still being eaten up now that they are all on the SD card?
Finally, surely if you overclock, it will use even more battery? I've just got it set to the maximum cpu so surely it must be improving something??

For rom go for Ressurection .. i can get u to the correct forum ... clockspeed in a cpu means the no of iinstructions it processes per sec .. so a cpu running at 600mhz will execute 600 instructions per sec while one running at 800 will execute 800 instructions per sec ... basically it gives u a performance boost at the cost of battery.. and our phones are det at 122-600 by default so u cant get a performance boost but on the other hand it helps with battery

Anakin, so I wasted money on the setcpu app then? It does seem much quicker since changing the min/max speed to both be 600mhz. Think originally it was set to 320 each.

[SWAP] Swap on Internal * v0.5 alpha *

SWAP on internal
Extend your RAM with very quick internal SWAP
v0.5 alpha
For the moment, the script is confirmed to work only on ROMs with the chinese x-part (or data2ext) by Atroy script only (read at the end of this post for alternative).
The only ROM I am aware of using this script out of the box is the excellent MIUI XJ x-part.
However, I intend to develop a non-loop based version shortly. It should will be compatible with most ROMs, so stay tuned.
What and Why
I decided to make a script that places the swap file on internal memory. Many people place it on SD card, but to me it seems somewhat pointless, as it hardly offers sufficient performance.
However, placing it on the internal memory makes it a much more interesting concept, because it has much better random read/write performance than even the fastest SD cards.
Warning: placing SWAP on internal memory will subject it to frequent read/write operations which in theory shortens lifespan of internal memory chip which you cannot replace. This is because flash memory has limited number of write/read cycles to it. So, consider yourself warned.
HOWEVER:
1 - although true, in reality I have been unable to find any case of this actually affecting anyone's phone. There is very limited amount of data documenting real-life effect of that process, but most likely your device will be long gone before the internal memory will show any signs of wear.
2 - the script recreates the swap file on each boot using different physical blocks of memory - this means not the same blocks are always used. More on this in 'Do it right' section.
Do It Right
1. 16-32 MB of swap should suffice. If you think you need more, you are probably wrong. NEVER use all available internal space. The larger the proportion difference between swap size and total free space on the internal data partition, the more breathing space your internal memory gets, as this allows the swap file to be moved around upon every reboot, which, in turn, will make it use the same blocks more rarely, and thus extending memory chip lifespan.
2. Get rid of bloat you don't use from the system partition, ie: ringtones, live wallpapers, useless system apps. Then create a custom
hboot with smaller system partition and larger data partition. You can do it using this (also attached to this post).
3. Play around with swappiness parameter. Still, the default set by the script should serve you well. But if you are paranoid, you can use it to further decrease how often system will write to swap.
Removal
Disable execution flag on the scipt in /system/etc/init.d and delete swap.img from internal data directory (on x-part scripts it is /mnt/asec/mtddata/ )
v0.5 alpha
* first public release
* loop device version only

x-part Impacted script (80% chance of rendering your ROM unbootable)
I attached a data2ext script which should offer better performance and battery life than some other a2sd scripts.
You are free to try and flash it on your ROM, but there is a good chance it won't boot any more - this is a very alpha version and I am not working on it at the moment.
Do not post complaints about it here. I only want to hear from you if it works!
So this allocates a part of your internal memory for random access? Nice.
I personally don't need more RAM, but this could be useful.
This sounds really good to my ears :good:
I will keep an eye on it.
Edit:
A small question:
So is it possible to use this for any rom if you are using data2ext for it?
Or atm only for miui xj?

You have to use Atroy's data2ext, which is virtually impossible to obtain because it was developed as part of chinese MIUI rom and never released as a separate script.
However, I have been working on it and I am attaching an alpha version of my adaptation of this script to the first post
Let me know if it works, but there is a good chance your ROM will not boot any more.

I tried to install it on CM10 by vj but it didn't work. Here are my steps:
Wiped everything except sd
Installed rom, then data2ext script and finally the swap script.
I'm on a ext4 partition if it matters.
I think (not really sure) one script has created two folders: /data/ and /data-app/ on sdcard.
Or did I just install it the wrong way?
Edit: The problem was as you expected that it stucked at HTC bootlogo.

If you want to try x-part script, then do not flash swap script until you confirm the x-part rom works.
Try with some GB rom. Maybe you'll have more luck.

After flashing ROMs on my Desire for nearly 2 years I'm starting to get bad blocks on my nand. Having a swap partition on internal would accelerate the process of getting more bad blocks. That's what I think anyway. Check your recovery.log for bad blocks next time you wipe your phone.

Thanks for the heads-up. But I gave a clear warning about in the first post. After two years, my desire has 4 bad blocks, which amounts to less than 0.5mb of internal space (less than 0.1%). Everyone should make a concious decision about using internal swap.
It will degrade the memory chip, yes, but is the degradation significant enough to care? Everyone has to decide for himself.

Help, Need some advice for a good friend's GS2+

Hello everybody, I come from the Xperia arc forums, been on xda for a few months now and to be honest im still kind of a noob even if i learned a little bit about ADB and rom/kernel/mod installing.
A good friend of mine recently decided to switch from an iPhone 4s to a GS2+ but has no clue about root roms ect so he asked me to tweak up his phone and i want to show him the full android potential on samsung's great hardware (without bricking anything hopefully)
I know the "what's the best" discussions are not allowed but since my friend will pass me the phone for no more than a day i dont have all the time to test every rom out there so i want some advice on the following:
What are the most stable and successful roms for GS2+? What great features do they have?
What are the most successfull and most of all SAFE kernel for GS2+?
Are GS2 roms compatible on GS2+?
I was planning on partitioning the internal memory and add a 512mb swap partition, i wanna avoid swapping sdcard cause of lower speeds and sd lifetime issues. is it reccomended to swap internal memory?
is there anything in particular about this model that i should keep in mind to avoid bricking this phone?
are most of the internal partitions EXT4 or do i need to convert them in order to increase performance?
Any other advices? i've already flashed with a Note and a Galaxy ACEi but im new to this phone.
Any quick help would be greatly appreciated, he's gonna gimme his phone in a couple of days...

[Q] Low memory problem?

Since we all know that Samsung Galaxy Fit S-5670 has very low internal memory and all because of that i'm finding it difficult to install some the bigger apps. As soon as the memory usage reaches 160 MB it starts notifying me about the low memory. Even when all of my apps are in memory card i still get low memory problem.
I was wondering if there is any way by which i can increase the memory even by a small amount. I've already rooted my device and using a custom stock rom. Please suggest any means of increasing the memory.
Thank you in advance.

You can ODEX your ROM. That will reduce the ROM size to almost 7-8 MB and you'll have the remaining memory to install your apps.. Hope this helps! :fingers-crossed:
Edit: You can find the link to the ODEX script in my signature.
I would recommend you to install cronmod int2ext+ script.
Also, try switching from stock to cm7.
I have around 400mb of apps on external memory and 100mb in my data partition.
If you want even more memory you can try other cronmod scripts that mount data on sd-ext
Thank you very much. One more question.

The ROM you mentioned is not ODEXED.. You'll have to ODEX it.. I'm not aware about the memory that will be saved but you can give it a try.. No harm in experimenting :silly:
My suggestion: Stick with your current ROM. CM11 is still under development and I'm not sure whether a stable build has been released till date.
The suggestion by @Harpratap is also very useful. You can try that. My SD card is only 2GB which restricts me to do so.
Hope this helps!

Memory increase help

Hi guys,
I have recently purchased a htc pico and due to low money budget i cannot afford buy a new one. So i rooted it and for almost 3 weeks i am trying to install a decent rom for speed and memory increase. I know there are a lot of threads in a lot of forums of how to increase the internal memory but i have tried almost everything i guess... Mount2sd and link2sd won't work so i wish to install the stock rom but with some appropriate scripts to increase the internal memory. I only want to increase the internal memory so i need the scripts to achieve it without using the apks mentioned since i haven't had any positive results so far..
Any help appreciated

In order to use memory script on stock rom you need modified kernel with ext partition support as stock kernel is not supported.
go to this page http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1754876
at bottom their are modified kernels. flash any of them.

no need to flash another kernel and i think memory increase script is already in cluded. Still you want different script try file attached below.
extract given file and place it in system/etc/init.d/ and set all permissions and reboot.
