Uhhh, you are about 1 week to late for this information. Thanks though.
I was rooted, no lagfix when I tried to update. It got to 100% then it said failed. My baseband says I897UCJH7. Kernel 2.6.29 [email protected] #2.
Did the update work or not?
Flashman, how did your OTA update go? Any issues us rooted/unlocked folks should be worried about?
My instinct is to delay the update until I stop seeing posts about hot it F'd up people's phones.

If you rooted and removed anything from stock rom, you're pretty much guaranteed to fail on OTA update. In order to make the OTA download package as small as possible, Samsung uses a diff patch based on the bit differences between stock JF6 image and new JH7 image. So, if you touched the JF6 in any unauthorized way, the patch won't work.
Luckily, you can now use the newly released Kies Mini to do a full ROM update which should be more reliable as you have the entire ROM image downloaded to your desktop and then flash to your phone.

Quoted by Samsung "The program can report this message if it detects a software build other than the official launch software of JF6."
You need to FLASH STOCK JF6 using ODIN ONE CLICK, Follow this Guide:

If my settings say i'm at JH7, does that necessarily mean the OTA update was completely successful? It reached 100% then said failed.

What do you mean removed anything from stock rom? I rooted and removed a bunch of the bloatware and did an OTA update with no issues.
I failed along with most other rooted and flashed guys. Luckily I didn't brick my phone in the process. I will wait until some beret update comes along before trying anything ota again.
Sweet life
Nevermind, I guess it didn't update fully cause some of the implemented changes aren't there. I really didn't want to have to run a master clear and have to reinstall all my stuff.

Do you have TouchWiz as your default launcher? and make sure you're on your home screen when you connect your USB cable.
If that doesn't do it you need to get back to JF6 only way or another because Mini Kies will continue to tell you that you have an "unregistered" device until it is at JF6
The reason is because your update failed partially :/
are you guys talking about a new update or just JH7?
We're talking about JH7, some people are still having difficulties getting it on their phone as the OTA is still failing - and if you've failed the OTA you need to reflash to stock before mini kies will work.
when i did the update i was rooted an it didn't fail on install or bootup or anything.
but then again i'm just rooted and nothing else has been touched.

Exactly, I don't think root causes any issues. I was able to check for update on a rooted ROM.
It's when you have a custom kernel etc.

Not really. AT&T has said that the real update will be sent out via SMS text message link, not through the "update software" menu in android.
Engadget just had that yesterday.

How the heck do I stop OTA update?

I have fwupgrade frozen but the update popped up wanting to install, I deferred it but I want to disable it so it can't check either. thanks

Flash a custom recovery/ROM. That should do it
But I'm not sure what else if the fwupgrade freeze didn't work
Yes. How do I stop this crap!?
I have 2 of these both rooted and hers keeps trying to install it. Its already downloaded on hers. I interrupted mine by killing the internet connection as soon as I saw it start downloading.
I'm sure when I'm sleeping it will try to install itself. So ill just shut my phone off.
Grr...
I'm running nosymathy rom with CWM installed and unlocked bootloader. The verizon update downloaded and prompted to install which I deferred for an hour. Not sure if the update will simply fail because I froze fwupgrade or not but I don't want to take the chance and I want to stop OTA completely so it doesn't even check.

Thats an issue with no-sympathy.... Most ROM's block the OTAs so you don't even need to worry about them.
This is actually the first ROM i've heard of that allows OTA's to even show up on the prompts.
Cmon no one knows how to prevent OTA prompts? How is it done in other ROMs?

You would have to ask the ROM's developers. Refuse it, and flash to another ROM that does it automatically for you. Obviously No Sympathy didn't think of an OTA... whynot I dunno. But every other developer did.

Just flash a custom recovery - ota updates can't install through a custom recovery so the furthest it gets onto your phone is in the /cache directory limbo.

by all means, if you're traveling to Canada then update away haha
Lmao wow. That's the most pitiful update ever. Seriously, couldn't they have waited until there was something more substantial and then included Canadian roaming in THAT update. As always though, Verizon is dumber than a bag of hammers...

Might be worthwhile to extract the modem package and see if the SMS bug is rectified.
wow
i was so sure this was a KK upgrade. been looking around for how to retain root if you take it. thanks for the info!
Hey guys, I have a question about this update,
My friend has the S3 for whom I safe- rooted, debloated and whatnot. Now that this update came, my friend tried to update but to no avail. She is adamant about the fact that Verizon definitely has something important hidden in the update, despite me trying to tell her otherwise, and figured that she couldn't install the update because she was rooted.
Naturally, I fully unroot her entire phone, uninstall root-only apps, and try the update, but it doesn't work. When the phone reboots for installation, the installation bar loads for a bit, hangs, then just says "error" and does not update.
Anyone know what the problem could be? Normally I wouldn't care so much, but if Android 4.4 is actually coming to the S3 then I don't want her not to have it, and I can already tell it's not going to work if this update doesn't either.
Thank you so much in advance.

Some of the bloatware you removed likely had to be present on the phone in order for the update to take place. Unless you are sure someone is never going to go back to stock without flashing an ODIN tar image and wiping their phone clean, best to just freeze bloatware with Titanium Backup. That way you can just unfreeze it in order to go back to full stock. Unless you have a list of the bloatware you removed and can somehow sideload them back in, you will unfortunately have to flash her phone to full stock VRUCML1 and wipe it clean.

Ah, I see, next time I'm around her I'll re-root it and backup all her stuff with titanium backup, flash the VRUCML1 and factory reset, then restore everything and see if it works.
Strangely enough, when the same update for my Verizon Note 2 came out, I was able to update while rooted even though I unsinatalled theexact same system apps I did on her phone. How strange.
Nonetheless, thank you so much.
I have a question for you all. I took the OTA update for 4.3 when it came out but after that I rooted my gs3 Verizon phone again successfully. Now I also took this last update and now lost root on my phone. I tried to reroot the phone but it fails now. There error I get on safestrap is something about the addresses not being able to be found. Can anyone help me reroot my phone so my apps like titanium will work again?
Thanks

I have not yet updated to this new patch yet, am I still able to install saferoot as directed on the thread for it or do I need to do something special first?

Unroot?

If i want to unroot, i have to return to stock but if i return to OCF stock, will it trip Knox?
if you rooted with pingpong just open up superSu then in settings do the full unroot
reboot and take the ota updates , as long as your knox is in tact.
That's it! Thanks! That's so much easier than returning to stock! I want to update my phone they said there was cause my battery gets stuck on a certain number and doesn't charge to 100. And they have an update to fix that but i don't see it.

no problem , your welcome , also just make sure that pingpong supports the new update ota you get before you install it
if i helped please hit the thanks button!
For some using SuperSu may not work. In my case, the 'uninstalling' box wouldn't disappear so I had to use ODIN to flash back to stock unrooted.

Error tryin to take new update!

I'm on a stock sprint n5 . When I try and take the Ota update I get a error in stock recovery when it reaches 30% . Droid dude falls over and say error . And now when I boot back up it says unfortunately voice service have quit working !! Any help would be great ? Like is there a way to take the update thru Odin or something ?? It says , try again using smart switch on your computer! Never used it before . Any help would be great
Return to stock with OI6 or OGD then update.

Yes i believe you are right. But it happened to me a while back on note 4 unrooted by deleting app super su and cleaning up for full unroot and the damn thing took. But failed at boot as happened to him. Just fyi. I know about the modified firmware warning. Prior to check for updates. However i am sure you are right. Would have to see more of what happened prior to updating.
