Hi. I plan on getting the Xperia Z3 phone. One thing that will stop me from getting it is if it does not support Group MMS (group/threaded messaging). This means if you send a message to multiple people, it's more of a group chat, rather than individual messages to each device. And if someone responds, it stays within the thread. I have this currently on my HTC One. It works with iPhones and other Android devices.
Can anyone confirm if the Z3 has this capability?
Thanks

I don't know if the default messaging app does (it probably does) but if not just download an alternative. I use Textra on my Nexus 5 and that does it.
Please post questions in the Q&A section

I read the Z2 does not have the capability of group messaging. My Galaxy S II wasn't able to do it, but my HTC One is. Another thing is that I have T-Mobile, which has WiFi calling. My HTC One is capable of sending group messages (MMS) and SMS over WiFi Calling, and I'm really hoping the Z3 does the same. It's really make a or break for me.
Using third party apps for sending MMS or SMS over WiFi calling does not work! They all fail to have that capability.

Yes, the Z3 / Z3c does support group MMS send/receive. To start a group MMS, create a new conversation, select 'add subject' from the menu, and type a least one character -- this make the conversation a group MMS. If you don't specify a subject then the message is sent as a standard SMS to multiple recipients.

Awesome!!!!!!!
Can that include a space as a character? What if someone else initiates the group chat? Well I suppose the subject will be auto-added anyways?
This is great news. Can't wait for this phone to be released.

So I got the phone, I add a subject, but all responses come back as single SMS! Help!?!?! I have 13 days before I can return this phone. Everyone gets it as a group, but I get SMS's back. And on top of it all, I have to add a subject every time i want to send a response.
This sucks! And T-mobile wants a $50 restocking fee!

You can't just use hangouts/facebook messenger/any number of alternatives which are free and better in every way? You're not paying loads for your MMS's I take it?

No, my friends want to use their stock messaging on their iPhones. This worked perfectly fine on my HTC One.

It may be in the Vendor Overlays.
Let me see if I can get it without root....
I am downloading a FTF now, I will see if I can grab it from there. the issue will be if you can push it to your system without root....

Well, not sure you can root on AT&T, I bet your bootloader is well and truly locked and there is no locked bootloader root yet.
But once (If) there is it is no problem to root as you just flash a stock FTF to revert back to factory settings. Root in itself does not void warranty.
You could always flash the FTF for my phone as well (Vodafone UK) you will get Vodafone bloatware and may lose some AT&T specific stuff but then you will have to weigh up what you want more.

Can you message me on gchat? it's my username on here @ gmail.com
I have it on t-mobile and don't have an issue. I also had a Z2 and didn't have an issue. I use hangouts though, but I don't see why that would matter. Only thing I can tell you is that if you have wi-fi calling on and it's active, you will not be able to do MMS properly.

After a week or so of work I have my shift sending and receiving calls and texts through virgin mobile but I can't seem to get data working. the evo has a lot more settings to change than the donor phone or what that "guide" on howardforums lists. I've tried changing the ha and aaa keys and that didn't seem to help.
does anyone know what I'm missing?
well I somehow stumbled on the right configuration to get it working. that only took 2 weeks
Can you do PRL updates via the phone's menu?
Mine still won't.
Sent from my PG06100 using XDA App
how do you update the prl? I used the prl from some guide and it kept bugging out and going to a verizon tower, so I ripped the prl from my intercept and its working now but slow on startup to get 3g... but it might be my area the signal is bad where i'm at right now
data has been working fine but it seems slow to connect on startup, im trying to figure out how to update the prl on my old phone to use that. and mms isnt working, received messages come as gibberish and I can't even tell who sent it

Virgin Mobile is blocking the MMS, it should be because of the ROM. Try flashing a 2.2 rom and try again.

Texting worked for me along with calling. Mms is picture messaging not quite the same as a normal text. It seems like data depended on getting the ha and aaa keys put on right using i believe qxdm and then putting in the password to the keys in the ##data# menu.
yes i would like to know how you got the data working also. i have my phone on virgin mobile. i get calls and text but no matter how i set it up data will not work. thanks..

The HA shared secret is: "vmug33k" (text string) This is standard on all VM phones, and will actually get you 1x Speeds.
The AAA is going to be located in one of your NV Items.
Use QPST, launch the EFS Explorer, goto the NVM folder and pull these keys (copy and paste) to a folder on your desktop:
465, 465_1, 466, 466_1, 1192, 1194
Use a program called HxD Editor to read these items.
On the Intercept, the AAA is located in 466_1... Again, not sure about the other VM phones.
When viewing with HxD, look for an NV item with "vmug33k" on the right.. Under it will be your AAA Key...
It will look like something like this:
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",

"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
Now you have both keys!
Input/Write these keys onto the new phone in QPST/Service Programming/ Under the M.IP tab. Making sure to match ALL information in this tab with the donor. Also, make sure when entering the keys to switch it to "text string"
Think that should get it!
Any questions just ask!

I'm still working on MMS... its been tough because VM uses a custom mms.apk
Kev
Today I am launching TextHer app which enables users of android phone to communicate privately and securely between them.
TextHer
It is a peer to peer (serverless) messaging app where the messages are directly sent from one phone to another without being routed through or stored on any servers.Messages will be not be routed through carrier's server instead it will be directly sent from one phone to another using data connection.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.spacenext.texther
Sending a message:
To send a message to another phone just type the primary gmail address of the phone,type your message and send it.
For example my phone's primary account is [email protected],Just type the mail address or just the account name(ramanean) and send a message
Features
1.No Registration is required and Free unlimited messages.
2.Secure/Instant communication between any two individuals
3.Instant Delivery of messages (unless the other phone doesn't have a working data connection)
4.Messages are not stored on any servers.they are stored only on your phones.
5."Background Send" option which allows a delivery of messages incase of a failure.
6.Messages are encrypted by AES standards
This app would make it difficult for law enforcement and spy agencies to track what is being communicated between two phones as the messages sent are encrypted by a standard AES algorithm and the messages are not stored on any server.It allows secure communication between two phones without the fear of being tracked for their messages.
Serverless:
It's not entirely serverless as we store the ips on our server and give it to the clients which enables phones to connect with each other. And I have plans to come out with another version which would never involve a server.
I hope I would get a constructive review on your site.Please let me know whether you need any extra information

a) This app won't be available in certain countries in the Middle East and south East Asia!
b) There is too much of snooping around and that's why I have come out with this app
c) On other hand it would help organizations like Occupy Wall Street and people in their protests.It would great help in free speech
MY answer to others who question my app!
Why do you need a intermediate person to message/communicate your loved one? Whether we use a third person to communicate with our loved ones inside our house? The answer is No.. and that is the reason I have come out with this app.
Okay here's what I discovered after a bit of goofing around:
1) You use app for a few minutes and it is impossible to get out. Pressing back keeps bringing you back to previous screen. In a loop.
2) I tried messaging myself. Didn't work.
3) I tried messaging on ramaean. App not installed
4) When I tried messaging to shangce, it force-closed on me.
5) You need to have a more consistent UI. You have used all the colors in rainbow
I don't want to come off as a ****, but if someone wanted to use an app for truly private communication I think they should be asking the following questions:
Could you describe in detail what happens to the text from the time you press Send to when the recipient's phone beeps?
How do we know your servers aren't logging our messages?
Why should we use your app instead of an encryption app?
Please don't take this as an insult to your app or hard work, but they are legitimate concerns for any security related app. I would be much more comfortable if there was an encryption feature.
You got some of the points wrong
a)My mail ID is [email protected] and not "ramnean" (use ramanean)
b)You can click on the home button in the bottom help menu to come out
c)I won't reveal from my that mail address "shangce"
d)I don't know which provider you are using.l

Ok, so is this still a "NO" for us in the Middle East? Will you post the apk file here or will I have to wait till I get back to India later this month to download it?
Is there some reasoning for barring people based on location? Am pretty sure that:
a) A terrorist is neither in our midst nor that one would be wandering around in the xda forums looking for something they could use.
b) If they are aware of a software such as this they could always get one of their partners in crime to download it from an off site location and mail it to them.
Hope that you will post it here.

Remember that the app works only for external ip's it doesn't work for natted ip's (I am trying to fix it)
Send a message to yourself to see that whether it works for you! If you didn't get your own message then it won't work for you as you may on a natted/internal IP
Nice idea, flawed execution. No functionality in any of my tests. Currently attempt to use Redact instead.

Hopefully this is okay to post in this section. Although this app is payed for on the Android Market I am offering it to the XDA community for free.
SMS2PC is a small app that runs in the background on Windows, Mac and Linux and allows you to send/receive messages via your Android phone. This, at the time of release, was the first SMS sending app for Android. There are now lots of alternatives but I think my app still has the polish and desktop integration (you don't need to keep browser open) that some people prefer.
You can download the APK attached, copy over through USB etc.
To download the desktop client, visit: w w w .geekyscott. com / sms2pc/ (sorry i cant post links....)
I hope you will all enjoy the app. Please don't post it on other websites as I would like this to be an XDA-exclusive thing. In a few months when I get the time to clean my source, I will upload the source for everyone to use/extend.
Features:
Auto PC location (no need to enter IP address on WIFI)
Forwards SMS from mobile phone to desktop (osx, windows or linux(beta))
Multi-send messages from desktop
Phone address book sync with phone
Handles send notifications and delivery notifications
Secure Encryption
Customizable interface
USB support (enable debugging on phone)
WIFI support
Connect over internet via 3G
Syncs message history
Message smiles/emoticons
Custom desktop audio notifications
Streamlined, simple and clear interface
Thanks for being a great community.
p.s. My old account is ScottishGeek, it would be nice to merge that with this if any mods read this.

It can link to your computer via USB, WiFi or Cell. Cell isn't recommended unless you have a good quality 3G network. It will be able to send a message as long as you have the smallest connection to your cell tower. I for example, leave my phone in an area in my flat I get signal (near the window) and use my laptop to send receive deep in my living room where normally I am in a black spot.
So wait. This application will install on my PC, connect to my Android phone, and allow me to send SMS text messages to my phone contacts on my PC? I tried airdriod for that but I had to refresh in order to see new messages. Which was an inconvenience. If this is the case with this app, will it work in real time?

thank you very much for this. may i ask for another feature?
i'm using a dual sim phone so would it be possible to have an option to choose from which simcard to send an sms in the sms2pc desktop client?
is it possible to make whatsapp / facebook messenger to work like this as well?

At this time there is no support for these messengers... but there is a possibility to make this happens. It really depends if the support 3rd party API's or if they have a simple database I can hook into. But sending may be a problem. Ill have a look.

If the Android API supports switching between dual sim then I will be able to implement this. I will have a look in the next few days.
Hi friend.. I think there is a problem between your program and Cerbelus. This morning I have been testing sending messages. Later, i´seen seen my phone communication has stopped working and then i have had to reset my device because was hanged. After reset and phone communications right i´ve received a message from Cerbelus with an alert message due SIM change. Now my Samsung SII works ok again but i turned off SMS2PC. Very strange. Can there be a conflict??

I am not sure why there would be a problem. I am using standard API's and Android design guidelines. I believe you are my first using using this Cerbelus software. If you could send me your logcat at the time of the problem I may be able to provide a fix for you.
I can't get it work with wi-fi connection. I allowed the TCP/UDP ports through the firewall, but no thing. USB connection works.

Sorry this is a bug I will fix at the weekend.
Wow looks great, i will have a play with this at the weekend.
I like how you can use it over 3g too, thats a big plus for me, could even use it over USB at work too!
Thanks for sharing this with us! :good:
You are a nice philanthropist! THANKS
:laugh:Man I am new to the XDA community but It seems that it's not everyday that a developer freely gives his paid app for the rest of the community. I already installed it and it seems to work quite fine.
Thanks a lot. Success man.
Wow
Great to see some apps with Lateral thinking.
I think it would be a great enabler for other apps in future.
Once again THANKS!!!
And great work!!!:good::good::good:
Awesome...
And thank you - I had been playing around some similar apps, but none really "fit the bill" for what I was looking for.
This looks to be exactly what I wanted, however - I'm having an issue with the connection over USB, I have it in debug mode and it's connected direct to the laptop, but times out at 12 seconds each time.
Can't test it over wifi because it's restricted from use in this environment, but will try it from home later today.
I suspect it will work just fine once I get it to the house, but it would be infinitely more useful here at the office...
Also, curious as to whether there might be some incompatibilities with one, or both of the OS's I'm using: Windows 8 Consumer Preview on the laptop and Ice Cold Sandwich 4.04 ICS on an Inspire 4G.
The problem: All JB built AOSP/CM mms.apk files do not work with TW ROMS.
Observations: Most work fine, but crash on sending or receiving an MMS message. ICS built mms.apks do work, but since ICS doesn't have Quick Reply or MMS preview built in, it's a step behind.
Bounty requirements: Working JB (preferred 4.2 as it has Group Messaging built in) that doesn't crash on MMS sending or receiving. Also, Emoji support, Full timestamp support, soft keyboard type, and SMS to MMS converter. If you patch mms.apk directly via source, a changelog or link commit back to CM/Gerrit is required. An explanation of what was missing/changed if no direct code was patched.
Method of payment: All parties who join into the bounty will be solely responsible for payment, which are to be arranged between the two parties.
I will start by offering $5. If you would like to contribute to get this working, please post and I'll keep a running list and keep the thread updated with the current amount.
Update: Adrynalyne, of Team BAMF, was kind enough to lend a hand and provided a fix, which he details in this thread. Attached is the fix.
#Notes# The fix SOMETIMES hangs while sending an MMS issue. I've been able to reproduce, but never when I can capture a logcat of it. If you know how to enter/use logcat, and you want to help refine the fix even more, by all means, post in here or PM me. I actually don't think it has to do with the fix, but the mms.apk itself. But again, we need people who can post logcats to narrow it down.
This fix SHOULD work on ANY unmodified, deodexed framework.jar based on the VRBLK1 leak. If you don't know what this is, ASK your dev if they've modified the framework.jar. If your phone blows up, YOYO, you're on your own. As always, its a good idea to make a nandroid backup, just to be safe.
Update: Adrynalyne hammered out a working fix for BLK3, which I posted below. I tested it on Beans Build 8. Works like a charm
More importantly, please consider donating to adrynalyne here. He did this out of kindness, as a favor to me. He doesn't even own the phone, I had to test and send files and logcats to him. Any little bit helps, and I think it's awesome he helps out with a device his team does not directly support, and hope more devs in the future will help each other in this manner. Thanks.

Read the first sentence. The problem is that the AOSP/CM mms.apks do not work on TOUCHWIZ BASED ROMs.
I'm using an Aosp messaging apk on clean rom. No problems sending mms or anything. Am I reading it wrong?

MMS force closes: fixed
MMS sending and receiving: mostly fixed. Possibly a signal issue as it sends OK at some times and not others. It receives fine.

That doesn't mean it can't be done. Can't never did nothin'. I'm starting with 4.1.x compatibility first.
As it stands, almost all my work so far to get AOSP MMS working has been framework code. I am going to post it here shortly so that I can get some more test results.
Edit: attached.
A couple things to note: Only send MMS through the app itself. In other words, don't try to send something from the gallery as MMS. Instead, open the MMS app and attach a file. I'll work on that limitation later.
This has worked for mexiken, both for receiving and sending, however sending becomes spotty. So let me know how it turns out. I do not know that this is the final fix and it may need some more work. I ran out of time due to Thanksgiving and family responsibilities. Once it fully works, I will be more than happy to share how I did it with everyone. Also, I modded the framework from his rom, so you might want to make a nandroid first, in case your JB TW rom isn't compatible. This is a test, and if your phone blows up, I hold no responsibility for it. I do not own this phone, so I cannot test it.
This package contains framework and a JB MMS app.
We've got it working on my phone, but I really don't know if it's my signal issues or what. I'm playing around with a few different combinations of files.
I will test further later tonight if I get out of the house. Worst case, I'll check tomorrow at work.

I'm not super familiar with how the framework works, so I figured I better ask before flashing this. I have a T-Mobile GS3 running a JB TW rom. Is the framework carrier or rom specific, meaning it would cause issues for me?

Can you test it? Make a nandroid first. Verizon is having some MMS issues as well, which *may* attribute to this. I sent an MMS to my wife on a different phone today and it took a while for her to get it.
What I really need is a full logcat of when sending fails so I can figure out where its getting stuck. I believe mexiken told me he has about a 66% successful send rate.
Receiving always works AFAIK.
Try sending while on, and off WiFi.
Would love to help, unfortunately this does not seem to work on Synergy 118. tried with complete wipe as well as clearing Cache and Dalvik, still no dice. This looks like a great mod though.
This is just the Sprint Visual Voicemail apps slightly modded so that the launcher icons better align with the new material design. I simply created the new icons in illustrator (one for each dpi), unpacked the apk and replaced the png's, repacked and signed. I'll try to keep this thread up to date with the latest version of the VVM app.
Confirmed working on s5 running 4.4.4 and s4 running 5.1.1 and with the newest update (vvmL). Keep in mind though, Sprint's VVM app is a finicky beast and it's performance/functioning heavily depends on the ROM that you're running.
Uninstall any existing Sprint VVM installation you have (to avoid mismatched signatures), then install the modded version as you would any other app. Enjoy!
Tip: Most ported ROMs contain information in build.prop from the device in which they were ported from, some unified builds may be slightly off. In order for this app to provision correctly, the following section in build.prop must be set to reflect your Sprint device before installing this app:
The following example is for the Sprint GS4:
Code:
ro.product.model=SPH-L720
ro.product.name=jfltespr
ro.product.device=jfltespr
(note this is not the tri-band L720T variant)
NOTE: The "9016" text messages are needed to wake the vvm client up to retrieve new voicemails as the come in. Blocking texts from 9016 in some sms apps (especially system sms apps) may cause the sprint visual voicemail app to not download new voicemail messaged. Muting the notifications for 9016 so your device doesn't ring/vibrate is ideal.
Don't have 9016 blocked or blacklisted, but still not receiving voicemails in the app?
Try reactivating VVM by opening the app, touching compose, recording a 5+ second message delivering it to [email protected].
Yes, the phantom voicemail notification is here on most kitkat ROMs. You can temporarily clear it by disabling then re-enabling notifications from vvm. I've personally had success by going into the app and selecting the voicemail message and touching "save" to move it into the archive folder. This has seemed to permanently fixed the phantom notification bug for me, IDK why.

Are you by chance running a ported lollipop rom? Some people have reported issues with sprint vvm (even with the stock, unmodded version) myself included. I think this occurs because the build.prop's of some ported roms shows information from the device which they are ported from. To correct this, grab a build.prop editor from the play store or use es file manager to edit the build.prop. The sections ro.product.model, ro.product.name and ro.product.device should look like this for the Sprint GS4 L720 (not the L720T variant):
Code:
ro.product.model=SPH-L720
ro.product.name=jfltespr
ro.product.device=jfltespr
The GPE port I'm running had all the information from the international Google play edition GS4. I uninstalled Sprint VVM, edited the build.prop, and reinstalled and it provisioned flawlessly and the app functions as it should.
Thanks for the heads up on the new VVM, I wasn't able to test that one yet. I'll take it down and see whats going on and repost later. Did it give you any errors? or did it just say app not installed?
I downloaded the apk, but lookout says its riskware?
I get that same message when I download apks and Roms in chrome. Mobile lookout might be giving you this message because I had to sign the apk in order to make it installable so the my signature doesn't match the official Sprint signature in the apk. I can assure you though I didn't mess with the code within though (I wouldn't even know how) just swapped out .PNG image files

Yes, I removed the latest in the op, I wasn't able to test myself and when I did I had the same results as you. After the build.prop edits and reinstall the first version worked though correct?
I am too on the GPe 5.0 rom.

- Recvd a text from 9016 stating Provisioning successful
- called myself from another phone and IT WORKED!!!!!

If so, how'd you go about stopping it? I don't want to block them in case that stops my voicemail alerts.

You called it exeleon! Worked great!! Now, if I could just figure out how to stop those 9016 texts without it messing up what I just did!!! I'm considering texting 9999 and sending them the 9016 number....you think that will work?
Update:
I just tried texting 9999 with "block 9016" and this is what I received back:
"SprintFreeMsg: Sorry, the sender "9016" cannot be blocked because it is used for legal or account related notices."
Any other ideas would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks again!
Yet another update:
OK....I just found out that in my messenger app, after selecting a message to read and/or reply to, that while in the message if you click on the drop-in menu in the upper right-hand corner, you'll see an option to "add to blacklist". Well I clicked on it and added it but won't know if it works until I get another voicemail. When I do I'll let you all know!!

From what I've read, as long as your SMS app isn't installed as a system app you can block 9016 texts. Otherwise, if it is a system app, it gets blocked at the system level so the vvm app never knows when to retrieve messages. I use Google messenger as a system app and I muted the notifications so I still get the SMS, but my phone doesn't ring or vibrate when they come in.

Hey there.
I'm also having that issue with the Sprint Note 3. I did my build.prop edits, dialed *38 to make sure none of my calls were being forwarded. My phone is getting the voicemails, just not to the visual voicemail app. Just keep getting the messages from 9016.
Whenever I re-install it I get the "Verifying account..." message and shortly after the "Account Verification Failed". The first time I did it, 9016 sent me a message saying "Provisioning successful" but nothing.
Not too sure what I'm doing wrong here, would love any insight you may have.
***UPDATE****

That did the trick. Don't know why I didn't see that at first. Thanks again for all your work.

& the noob in me is showing. I figured it out. I did the very first thing you advised we do "Compose 5+ second message and email to vvm..."
That did the trick. Don't know why I didn't see that at first. Thanks again for all your work.
