Root access after software update - Galaxy Tab 2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I rooted my Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 GT-P3113 using ClockworkMod to flash the cwm-root-gtab2.zip file from an SD card. I was granted root access just I was supposed to be. Some time later, I did SOME (can't remember exactly what) OTA update, and after the update, I lost root. Looking into it, I still have the su binary installed, but for some reason, if I tried su-ing from the Terminal Emulator, it tells me "permission denied". Any app that uses root won't work either. BUT, plugging the tab into my Linux computer, I am able to run 'adb shell' and I can run su just fine. I noticed that now, running from the tablet, the user on Terminal Emulator is set to u0-128, whereas before, I'm pretty sure it was just 'shell'. When I do 'adb shell', the user is also just shell. The permissions for su have the setgid bit on, but not the setuid. What exactly caused this, and how do I fix it (besides just rooting the device again)? Everywhere I look, it seems like the setgid bit is the only one on, and not setuid. Would flipping that bit also work? Or is there some other reason not to do that?

You might just need to flash SuperSU.zip in recovery.

Yea, I was thinking about that, but I'm just going to flash CyanogenMod. What I really want to know is what caused su to stop working? Like I said before, if I plug my tab to my computer, I can still su in an adb shell. And would it work if I set the setuid bit? I was wondering if there was a security reason not to do that... Also, what about the update caused the 'user' to be changed? I could have sworn before that it was just 'shell' but now it seems to have that u0_128, which I think is the ID of some sandbox for each app? I'm not sure on that either...

RESOLVED:Rooted but getting Permission Denied from ADB Shell?

ADB Shell connects just fine, but I cannot SU into it. I am rooted and have the latest SuperUser installed... In addition, I have USB debugging enabled, the LG drivers, and Root Explorer works perfectly.
RESOLVED:
You must have SuperUser OPEN while trying to SU from ADB. I don't remember this being needed on my Nexus One, but it's working now. I will keep this up for others that might need it....
Sceencast in droid explorer isnt working for me.rooted g2x. Maybe ill reinstall it after i get home from work. Is yours working?
Do you have SuperUser OPEN while trying to use it? Seems that it's not running persistently like it did on my N1

nope, no screencast even with super user running. just rebooted. gonna try again. logcat seems to be going nuts though.
I was going crazy about this and asked Chris Soyars because I have never had to do this either. This is what he said:
"You can just type 'su' while in an adb shell, and it should drop you down to root. You won't get adb providing root until you have a boot image flashed that isn't running in secure mode.... -Chris Soyars"

First you need to go to settings developer options and root access and check apps and ADB
Then you might have to do the CHMOD -R 777 /directorynameyouaretryingtoaccess
Guys. I am assuming the su in adb shell is preceded by an adb remount? By default system is ro not rw.

[Q] Superuser permissions

Hello
Have unlocked the phone and installed custom android OS a while ago, but then all of a sudden i do not have root access anymore, even tryed to reinstall the phone. Though i do have a bad feeling about it wasn't needed
My problems is that im unable to give programs root access, it looks like the phone is not rooted acording to the programs.
Also if i try the following:
adb shell
su
then i get "permission denied"
Can't seem to figure out where my flaw is. Even tryed to
Anyone got an idea to what the problem might be? Have looked through the nexus s forum for clues but no luck.

Most likely the permissions on the su binary are f'd up (assuming it's present). The easiest fix is just to reflash the su binary (mount /system first) through CWM.
do you by any chance have a guide to do that? or a link to one?

There are several rooting guides here if you do not have CWM installed:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1067813
They will go over quite a few things. However, if you are unlocked and have fastboot set up it's as simple as downloading the recovery image, and then using fastboot to flash the recovery (fastboot flash recovery recovery.image.name.img)
Once CWM is installed boot into recovery and flash the su binary here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=682828
well the funny thing is that i already have 2.3.6.1 installed, but i still dont have su rights.
When i try to follow the buttom guide where to install superuser. where it states that i should write "adb remount". Then i get the message back where it says "Operation not allowed", or when i type su i get the message "permission denied".
I seriously don't understand what i have done wrong :S

[Q] motorola i886, halfway rooted... i think

I am trying to root a motorola i886. Its a really wierd nextel iDEN PTT phone that is running (i believe) android 2.0 or 2.1 but has no touchscreen...
Basically I have been able to get a root shell (#) from 'adb shell' by pushing some program called psneuter to the phone and running it. Once I had this I could install apps via adb ok, but it seems like whenever I try to run any apps that require root they error saying they do not have root access.
As far as I can tell pretty much every rooting guide for every other phone has you putting 'su' and sometimes 'busybox' into /system/bin and 'Superuser.apk' into /system/app. I did both of these but still got the same errors about apps not having root. I tried a few different versions of these files I found from different sites to no avail. Running su on a terminal emulator on the phone itself would get the error "operation not allowed" or something like that. Then I found some other guide where you just copy 'sh' to 'su' and chmod su to 4755. When I did that I could get to a # prompt on the phone's terminal emulator app by typing 'su' but still got root errors for apps that need root.
I though maybe someone here would know something that I missed. As far as I can tell, I have applied the correct permissions to all these files or have at least tried every combination I can think of to no avail (shouldn't chmod 777 just make everything work?)
Also, does the phone usually come with a stock version of busybox on it? Do you need a specific version of these files for your device or version of android?
When an app on the phone tries to get root access is it just basically trying to run 'su' internally or something like that?
Also forgot to mention I have tried all the one-click-root apps and they do not work for this stupid phone. (well the super one click one was how I figured out how to get the adb shell root but the regular root button doesn't work...)
I can't help with your specific questions, but there is some info about rooting the i1, another iDEN with Android. Although it looks like the i1 is actually Android, and not the Motorola-altered, not-really-Android, proprietary software that the i886 has.

Wow, I can't believe someone found this thread and replied after so long. Thanks, but in the meantime I actually figured out how to root it fully and get root apps to work. I think i just tried different su's and superuser.apk's that I found on the internet until one worked...
Now, if you have figured out how to change the nextel push-to-talk chirp/beep sounds then let me know how you did that. I actually found the .wav files for the PTT sounds in some .apk in /system (phone.apk I think?) but for some reason changing them had no effect on the sound the phone makes when using the push-to-talk feature...
Its been 10 years but do you still have the firmware for this device? I need to flash it, it doesnt finish booting up
I don't have a full ROM .zip file for this phone, only some update .zips. But the first link result for a google search for "motorola admiral stock rom" worked for me for downloading a file.
Wrong phone, sorry.
Sorry but i don't understand. Isn't the Motorola admiral a different device? Does that zip work for the i886? If so, how do I flash it, because the i886 doenst have a recovery mode.
Oh, oops sorry, I was confusing this phone with another one. I looked and I don't have and firmware files for this, sorry.
OK, thanks for replying

[Q] My phone obviously has root... but not according to the shell. Need some help!

Hello xda, I have a bit of a problem:
I have a Samsung Exhibit which I rooted using the zergRush method found here on the forums. At first everything worked fine. But recently I was trying to push a modified system app to my phone using adb and it told me the action wasn't permitted. Checking the shell, and terminal emulator on my phone to see if I had superuser permissions failed. So I went about trying to root my phone again, which according to the zergRush script said was successfull, but checking the shell once again showed that I still did not have superuser permissions. I did a factory wipe of my phone in hopes of trying to get it to root again with no success. But here's the weird part, although it doesn't appear I have root access all my apps that require root access (titanium backup, my screenshot app, and some of widgetlocker's features) still fully function.....
Does anyone have any idea what's going on here? I would love my system folder access back
Thanks in advance.
Dumb question, but your H-Boot shows S-Off? Just covering the bases... Also, do you have Super User installed and functional?
To be honest... I don't know what H-Boot or S-Off means. Pretty new to all of this. Mind giving me a walkthrough? I have superuser installed yes. It's granting programs superuser permissions. But I can't access su in terminal emulator or in the shell.
Well, I'm not the top tier technical person here, so I'm not exactly sure on how to get your problem resumed, since I've not heard of that. On the other hand, there might be a different way to accomplish what you are trying to do.
What are you trying to achieve, pushing a modified system app to do what and where? My suggestion, might be to just put it on your phone through USB to the root folder and then move it in ES File manager, or w/e you use. If all you are doing is pushing.
Obviously ADB shell detects your device, but I'm not sure why it is saying it doesn't have SU access. My other suggestion is to redo the ADB/Android SDK installs. I had a problem where I installed them wrong, by installing too much and ADB did not work properly. So, there might be a chance your phone is fine, but the ADB/SDK are not proper, somehow.
Let me know.
If that were the case, and my phone was fine, wouldn't I be able to access super user through terminal emulator on my phone? Right now when typing su in terminal emulator, the pop up to grant superuser permissions appears but when you allow it to have su permission the # doesn't turn to a $ like it should. The more I think about it the more I think it's a problem with superuser. I've seen people talking about an update to superuser that can break your root? Mehhhh.
Seems like other have had this problem too... Not sure if a nandroid recovery will fix this, otherwise you might have to try to unroot, and then reroot.
Sorry, just might have to do a little more digging than I was able to. Good luck

[Q] How To, If Possible, Root With Bad Volume Keys

So, I'm attempting to root a Charge that the volume keys do not work. Apparently, 1 and 2 year olds who have great throwing ability is something the Charge, well, anything really, doesn't exactly appreciate. Normally, I root by going into the download mode, and flashing CWM, then installing the ROM. Obviously, not happening here.
My question is, has someone with more knowledge than I figured out how to accomplish this? Its running stock FP5. I really don't want to send it in because of the contract timing and wasteful of money. I'm also willing to experiment replacing parts, if someone knows anything about it...
Thanks.

Yep. There's a jig that will force the phone into dl mode. IIRC it's branded for the gnex but it's confirmed to work on the Charge as well. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=27533069

Hey, I had a thought of using ADB to root, and somehow forcing CWM on it, then using an app to boot it into dl mode. I've never used and before and don't know if it's possible, although, from what I read, it seems plausible. Can you offer any insight on this idea?

If you have adb all set up and it properly recognizes your phone (something comes up when putting in the adb devices command) you can boot into download mode with
adb reboot download
Actually it's something I looked into recently for another member. I'm not saying it's not possible but I don't think we have the right tools for it. Originally ginger root was used via adb to root the charge but that's not going to work with our version of gb (assuming you could still find it). I'm not sure the format of cwm will work either. I'm not really proficient with adb so someone with more expertise might be able to get you going.

Awesome. I don't have it installed yet, but it doesn't look like it takes much to make it work. Plus, I have nine that isn't screwed up, so I think I'll see what I can come up with later.
On a side note, I can't post a reply to your tweaked 3.1 thread, but I ran into somewhat of a problem... run tweaktools, did the tweaks thing, phone BARELY would run. I also couldn't get a shell to run to get back in to uninstall. What I ended up doing to fix was a reinstall of SuperSU and installing a bash shell off a different emulator to get back into tweaktools. This was after I played in /system/etc/init.d awhile trying my hand at fixing it. Thought you may want/need to knoknow.

Sorry to hear of the troubles - not sure what would have caused the issue with tweaktools. You weren't able to su, or you weren't able to open terminal emulator? What were you messing with specifically in the tweaks?

Okay, Found it in ADB, and am able to reboot into download, so all is well, I think.
On the tweaktools issue, I kinda did something like this...One tweak does okay, so lets install ALL of them....after that, performed the reboot, and everything went very sloooow. So, I tried to get into a term emulator, and nothing happened, the shell wouldn't even start. Blank screen. So, I tried a different outside of ROM toolbox. Nothing. So, I played around with the settings here and there, and still nothing. I then went into root browser, and started trying to manually move the tweaks out, nothing different. So, I downloaded another term emulator, "Better Terminal Emulator" and got a bash shell to at least open, was able to get into tweaktools, erase all tweaks, clear downloads. But the shells still weren't operating right. They'd open and run, but nothing would show on screen. So, a erase/reinstall of SuperSU, everything good....LOL
Well, maybe it'll help, maybe not, but here's the path I used to do this:
Visit samsung's site for the ADB download and install to c:\android-sdk\ (default)
Put USB Debugging on in phone
Start up command line and Odin 1.82
issue following in command line (notably in the c:\android-sdk\platform-tools)
Code:
adb reboot download
Odin up some Tweaked 2.2 with recovery and kernel for root
once rebooted, issue the following in ADB shell:
Code:
adb shell
su (Checked phone to be sure root was granted)
cd /data
rm -R *
cd /cache
rm -R *
cd /dbdata rm -R *
reboot, then adb reboot download.
Flashed EP4 Stock, updated,
Updated to FP5E
Once again, USB debug, adb reboot download, and Odin Tweaked 3.1 with 0302,
follow above code again, reboot, and I think I have it right....
Since the volume keys don't work on here, is there a way to screw around in the recovery mode via ADB rather than only the keys? I see ADB sees the phone in recovery, and seems to want to connect with it....Second is, is there a way to play with this in the *nix enviroment? I also have been searching for the Gingerbreak, etc to root this thing on stock, but haven't been able to do it....and last, is there a way to do a data wipe other than what I did, and think i accomplished with ADB?
Thanks
With the CWM that I am using, you can use the hard buttons at the bottom of the phone to navigate.
