Kernel wake locks: These are low level/hardware wake locks from the kernel. We can only reduce these by modifying the kernel or reducing the usage of a certain feature of the kernel. By researching these we can improve the battery consumption and performance of the Kernel.
Partial wake locks: These are wake locks from apps. These can be reduced by uninstalling or disabling features in software. woooow, what are you doing with the system tweak dude? in order to save more juice, i tweak my CPU Max Freq UV to 960 MHZ and doin some tweaks on the CPU Gov. Of course by doing this i sacrifice the performance. But then i installed your system tweaks and then boom! all of the scrolling home screen performance become very fast? this including the three navigation bar delay-in-pressing and application opening also now become fast.
I corious, then i open my cpu governor ...maybe you enter an init.d script on it to change the value, but i see there the value is still the same with my "battery saving mode". then i open the animation and scrolling speed, also still the same setting.
is this tweak really increase performance without sacrifice more battery?

[Howto]Tips n tricks for better battery life

Since we have better battery life on Android r169 version thanks to our devs i'm going to post tips n tricks for a even better battery life
1. Use "GSM auto (PRL) to save more juice while still connecting through 3G
- in the phone setting>wireless and network>MobileNetwork>NetworkMode
we are only allow to choose GSM only/ WCDMA / Auto between two
- but if you use type "*#*#4636#*#*" to phone Information, you can choose more type of networkmode. It is claimed that choose "GSM auto (PRL)" allow you to save more battery (cell standby) while allow you to connect to 3G network.
-there is one more setting which you can change:click settings(windows logo)>select radio band and change it according to your needs

2. Use AutoKiller Memory Optimizer
- This tool is different from other app killer
- It fine tunes android systems inner memory manager to keep your device fast over time.
- As a side effect it also lowers battery consumption.
- At certain free memory level (e.g. 250mb), the android os will automatically close those apps not in use (according to original android os logic)
3.Use Autostart
- Instead of closing them, it would be better if we don't let the app start from the begining
- You can choose to disable those app that u feel unnessary, so that they will not run during your phone startup
4. Check your Battery Consumption
- Download "Current Widget" or "battery monitoring widget" from market
- these apps will monitor your battery usage and recoded in a log file
- This is the normal consumption rate (varied across ROM, kernel and CPUI frequency and other factors)

Tips
General Lithium-Ion Battery (LIB) Usage:
• Discharging your LIB fully (or less than 2.4 Volt per cell) is bad for the battery. Every time you do that, it can be said that small part of your battery (some cells) dies (they forever lose their charge). Do not store your batteries depleted, there's a high chance they will die completely or will become very "weak".
• You cannot restore bad LIBs by overloading/heating/praying. You gotta go buy a new one. They DO degrade overtime, some cells naturally lose the ability to gain/give electricity.
• Although it is said that LIBs do not have memory, it's not entirely true. LIBs have gauges that monitor performance of cells, and if you do a lot of small charges, it won't let those gauges to monitor a full battery potential, causing an invalid indication of charge level. A complete charge/discharge should be made when battery capacity seems reduced, that will calibrate gauges and they will provide your phone with correct charge level status. A full charge/discharge cycle should be done every 30 (or so) partial charges.
• LIBs have a shelf-life. Do not buy them to store them. Use them early, use them often, they will die whether you use them or not. Do not buy LIBs to use them in 6 months/year/etc, buy them right before actually using them.
• LIBs have short lives (in comparison to NiCa batteries, etc). You should expect to buy a new battery in 2-3 years after being manufactured. It is caused by internal oxidation and there's nothing you can do to stop or prevent that.
• Worst LIB treatment is to keep it at 100% charge level at high temperature (think laptop/phone under direct sunlight, like car dashboard).
• Best LIB treatment, or LIBs "favorite" charge level - 40%. That's also the usual charge level you buy them with.
• LIBs don't like heat. For example, while always at 100%, typical LIB in a laptop, at temperatures of 25C (77F) will lose 20% (twenty percent!) of full capacity per year. That capacity loss is reduced to 6% (six percent) at 0C (32F), and increased to 35% loss at 40C (104F). So, keep them cool (LIBs like fridges), don't let your devices sit in the sun or overheat at charge. Also, keep in mind that while in use, battery will be significantly hotter than phone/outside environment.
• LIBs like frequent partial charges/discharges more than they like full charges/discharges.
General Android power usage advice from google:
• Although this part is somewhat controversial, they do recommend having a complete, full FIRST charge to be made. If time allows, a preferred time for the first charge is 12 hours. This may have more to do with the OS than the battery.
• Battery on a Android device, in average, will last about a full day with normal use (some videos, mail, calls). That's what you should kind-of expect.
• Speaking in averages, "idling" 3G/EDGE connection (when phone is sleeping and no data is transferred through 3G), drains almost no energy. Just a little more than having 3G/EDGE radio off completely. So when no apps are using 3G, you don't need to keep it off.
• Same goes to WiFi connection - although it's on, if there is no data flowing through it, it uses almost no energy.
• At full throughput (100% data flow), EDGE is using more energy than 3G. In average, 3G is more energy-efficient than EDGE.
• WiFi is using more energy than 3G (when both are at 100% use), but since it transfers files much faster and then goes to "sleep", it's actually recommended to use WiFi whenever possible. Since it'll "sleep" more often than 3G, overall it will use much less battery than using 3G.
• Some bad apps or widgets can use android's "WakeLock", keeping CPU at 100%, screen always-on, or both. I myself have encountered such widget (I won't mention the name, it's in the market) that used a WakeLock to keep CPU spun-up at 100% all the time. That makes a huge impact on battery life. My advice - use a CPU profiling app to monitor the CPU - make sure that CPU slows down by itself when it's not used. So, beware of such widgets/apps. To check for CPU cycles, many recommend OSMonitor (free from market, install it, go to options, sort by "Load" in descending order. It'll give you "busiest" processes at the top). At rest you should be getting about 10-20% for OSMonitor itself, and 1-10% Android System. At rest, everything else should be 0-1%.
• Android slows down CPU when not in use by itself, as a built-in feature. Apps that throttle/change CPU frequency, are not necessarily needed.

With "CurrentWidget" you can also log applications which are running on background. Then it should be easier to find out cause of battery drain. Also don't forget to write about your current settings ...

iv installed angry birds rio,a 3d game,zedge,ebay and sky sports apps from market place
gprs is always on in both
my device is currently in sleep mode,will upload a fresh log to show results for sleep mode

Disable Wireless Network Positioning.
(Settings > Location)
Disable GPS Satellites.

Manual Brightness: Lowest (0)

I think automatic brightness is the best. If you go out during the day you won't be able to see anything on 0 brightness.
It's probably more convenient to just buy a second battery.
Good guide for those desperate for more battery life though.
Green Power is a much simpler alternative to Juice Defender and seems to work a lot better too!
Also there is no need for a task killer if you are running GB. Complete waste of time.
Task killer is much easier than GB internal app control. Save time, not waste time.
But remember FC task killer together thats all.

I have a Samsung Galaxy S running the FASTY ROM, and when I switched over to this ROM, I noticed I went from 6-hour battery life to 2-3 days battery life!
Go to every Apps that has Notification Interval in their setting, it updates in background although not display in the Accounts & Sync
Leave you phone off. Usually gets me unlimited power and run times.

That means you are good in saving battery.
There have been good tips mentioned but I would like to add that all those battery saver apps just do nothing. These kinds of apps are just ads while some of them like juice defender offer androidees a paid version (Ultimate, Pro etc) which is just another trick where it may be useful for lazy guys who can't turn wifi, bluetooth or other connections or apps off themselves!
I haven't actually tried any of ROMs which are told to be effective (like "undervolt") and on this position I must admit that manufacturers' ads for their mobile products are just lies as I have a SGS2 and whenever I start to play a HD game or connect via wifi it just starts to drain the battery times times more than the advertised battery life!
The only and reliable way of saving battery could be just using carefully: HD games for maximum 30-45 min and wifi connection for 2-3 hours. Playing movies or music could be run in a more span of time like 4-5 hours. Otherwise you will have no remaining for calling or necessary usages!

It's true, but other things also affect battery life (many of which the OP mentioned).
However, I just wanna add one thing which I'm sure many of you already know. But the reason I am mentioning it is because I witnessed this work on two Samsung Phones belonging to my friend and his wife: Galaxy Pro & Galaxy Mini (name of the phones, not my friends ).
At first, and on stock rom(not rooted) their battery life was horrible; and by horrible I mean less than 6 hours of usage (<24 hours idle).
I googled it and read somewhere, that fully recharging the phone then draining it completely (until it switches off itself) every day for a few days, the battery life will improve noticeably.
I told them about it; they tried it; and after only 3 days they started to notice the difference. They told me that it really made a difference. Now their battery life is 6-7 hours usage. 48 hours idle.
I know those numbers sound unrealistic but somehow it worked.
I have read this before, and it seems to be a common thing for battery life.
I haven't tried it on my DesireHD because I'm always hopping between different ROMs..
I hope this would be helpful for someone...

Ways to maximize your battery life.
Generally when it comes to battery life I try to use those two tricks which work very well with ICS Roms.
I use ondemandx governor 122-1612MHz with suspend_freq=122MHz.
In order to achieve lowest power consumption in standby. You can tune manually Vdd at 122MHz =suspend_freq to the lowest value.
I also change in /system/buid.prop the value of ro.ril.disable.power.collapse to 0 instead of one by default in order to allow deeper sleep of the air interface.
Over all the type of ROM you are using, the age and capacity of your battery in your device also play a roll in the average time you get out of your device

ChaCha Battery LIfe Experiments

Other than battery life, I believe the ChaCha is one of the best QWERTY candybar Android devices out there (not much else to choose from...). So, I am on a mission to get as much battery life out of it as possible, without sacrificing much functionality. I've been experimenting over the past few months and here is what I've found:
1) SuperOSR ROM gives me the best battery life (compared to CM9, CM7.2, CM7, HTC Stock, ATT Stock and Telus Stock)
2) Backlight drains a lot of energy, so I set my custom Backlight settings as the attached jpg
3) 600Mhz Max CPU speed is a sweet-spot for battery life vs. performance
I tried to see max life I could get with various items enabled/disabled, here is a summary:
1) Airplane Mode @ 26hrs still 100% remaining
2) Voice Network On (Auto GSM/CDMA) @ 25hrs still 68% remaining
3) Voice & Data Network On (Auto GSM/CDMA), Background Data/Auto Sync Disabled @ 23hrs, still 68% remaining
4) Voice & Data Network On (Auto GSM/CDMA), Background Data/Auto Sync Disabled, Roadsync Exchange every 15mins @ 23hrs, still 66% remaining **
** This is a big one for me. I originally was using the built in Exchange/Email sync (15 min sync time), but this required Background Data and Auto Sync to be enabled. I would usually only make it 15 hrs or so with regular usage. Once I disabled Background Data/Auto Sync and switched to Roadsync (which still works with these disabled), I drastically increased battery life. The only drawback for me is needing to enable background data to use the Play Store (which I rarely use).
I searched for a decent explanation of what these two functions do, and here is my best concise summary:
Background Data: when enabled, applications can send/receive data even when you are not actively using them (i.e. play store app updates, etc.)
AutoSync: strictly controls whether the accounts (under accounts & sync) are allowed to sync on their own or not (i.e. built in exchange, facebook, twitter, weather, news, etc.)
Other items I set that may or may not save small amounts of power:
• Sound
o Vibrate – Off
o Haptic Feedback – Off
o Low Battery Sound – Off
o Pulse Notification Light - Off
• Display
o Auto-Rotate – Off
o Screen Timeout – 30s
o Animation – None
o Window Animation – Off
o Transition Animation – Off

o Surface Dithering – Off
• Sound
o Silent State – Enabled
o Vibrate During Calls – Off
o Mute Camera Shutter
• System Preferences
o Scrolling Cache – Disabled
o Wallpaper Hack – Off
Also implemented the Adreno GPU mod to is uses the GPU instead of CPU.
Hope this info might help someone increase their battery life!

Wow, that's a really long time! What are the details? I'm assuming data is off, looks like voice network is on, but I'll also assume you didn't use it during this time period (no voice calls, etc.)

I use phone mostly for calling and calendar/mail. I have only a few apps/widgets installed.
No GPS, no mobile network data connections, no background data, no automatic sync.
Wifi are only enabled when I need it for sync or internet access.

Here is my phone setup:
CM7.2 build for HTC ChaCha with librpc.so from SuperOSR (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1912771)
ADW Launcher EX version instead of stock launcher.
Governor: Conservative, CPU: 245Mhz - 800Mhz
No animations, no haptic feedback, no live wallpapers.
There are 3 major battery consumers:
CPU: The CPU consumes most of your battery, therefore you should measure your applications/services how much CPU resources they need. There should be no unused services in your running services list and no (unnecesary) widgets which wakes up CPU to update information while the phone is in standby. The Temp+CPU monitor will show how much CPU your system ir using when idle or running some applications. If your device is using more than 4% of CPU when idle, open terminal and type top -m 6 to find which process is waking up CPU.
Display: display should switch off 30 - 60 secs when phone is idle.
Radio: You should enable mobile data connection, bluetooth, GPS, Wifi only when you need it.
Erm, question:
Why 30-60 sec when phone is idle?? Why not 15-30 sec? I mean, if it's in idle, that means that you don't use it. That means that you're not actually looking at the screen for anything. For sure, you might be reading something (like an email, or an SMS) but given the screen size, you won't spend more than 15 seconds reading without scrolling. My two cents. And a penny.
I agree that 15-30 secs would be better. I use 30 secs on my HTC.

1) Do you think there is much difference in battery life between CM7.2 (with swapped libprc.so) and SuperOSR? I figure they are both AOSP based.
2) Did you notice a big difference between Ondemand and Conservative CPU governors?
3) You mention about switching off BT, WiFi, GPS, etc. but from what I've read, the GPS is only active when an application (like Maps) requests it, so there is no need to manually turn it on/off. Similarly for BT, it uses very little power in standby mode and only consumes when in an active call.
4) For that screenshot where you get 7 days on battery - how many mins of voice calls are recorded?

1. I think there should be no significant differences between CM7.2 and SuperOSR in terms of battery consumption. SuperOSR by default have some google apps and services installed, however many users reported that SuperOSR has longer battery life.
2. I didn't test ONDEMAND governor.
3. Radio devices still consumes energy even if they are not used. With bluetooth in standby mode my laptop consumes noticeably more power than if I disable device in BIOS. Also for every device there is a service/driver which is running in background, locking system, polling device status, etc. There is a beautiful power widget in CM7.2 and SuperOSR - it is very easy to turn device on or off.
4. About 60 minutes of voice calls.

For this one I can chip in with some info:
Regarding GPS, it might be that the chip stays powered on and acquires your position the moment you turn it on; if you see the GPS icon in the status bar then this is true. It's also related to the Location settings, if you allow your device to use location based info to improve services and whatnot. The effect this has is that every Google product will search for location info, even if that application is not running. Keep this in mind; you might want to disable these options as well.
Bluetooth - It is indeed true that in standby mode it uses less power than active mode (active mode means having a device connected, not necessarily an active call). The problem lies in how the software is implemented by the people who released the drivers for the ROM. Nonetheless, it should be turned off if you're not using it. You can find a thorough analysis of Bluetooth power consumption here: http://nesl.ee.ucla.edu/fw/documents/reports/2007/PowerAnalysis.pdf . At the same time, keep in mind that different Bluetooth versions have different power consumptions. For example a device with BT 2.1 will loose more power when having BT turned on than a device with BT 4.0. Our ChaCha has 3.0 according to gsmarena which has a somewhat improvement in power consumption in different stages.
*background info: I work for a company that develops embedded and off-the-market BT car-kits, therefore I'm sick and tired of BT devices (phones, BT players, tablets, etc.). One quick example that we usually laugh at: iPod Touch 3rd/4th Gen in idle with BT off lasts about 48 hours, give or take. With BT on, not connected to anything, it lasts about 24 hours.
Well, been trying different methods in the last couple of months... CM9 gives the best life while using it the normal way... I can survive almost 46 hours with using data, calling, checking mail and everything. It's nice if you can run that long, but why bother about extra days when you can make it over 24 hours with normal use...

Combining this info with the one from the article you linked, it seems that Bluetooth and GPS don't really use much in standby mode - a few mW at most. So we shouldn't concentrate on them much when trying to conserve power, but rather to look at the larger consumers like unnecessary Data and Display usage.
Tried a stock ROM this weekend since the stock ROM has much better GPS fix time and faster Bluetooth connect for me. Unfortunately, it also has the dialer bug. I can't seem to find a version of the ROM that doesn't. Also, turning off the "quiet ring on pickup", etc. options has no effect on preventing the bug.
However, I did find a fix that worked great for me: Setting "gsm.proximity.enable=false" in the build.prop file
This disabled the proximity sensor so you have to manually turn off the screen on a call - no big deal for me as I use a BT headset all the time. I can confirm that this does the trick in terms of preventing the dialer bug/drainage issue for me.
Let's see what sort of battery life I get now from the stock rom...

[GUIDE] How to get max out of your battery

In this post I'll give you tips to save your Android's battery and a How to get A FULL DAY lasting battery?
Common tips:-
#1 Uncheck the Auto-Brightness and keep brightness to as low as 10%, also lower the screen timeout to 15 or 30 seconds. Add Power Control widget to your homescreen (comes preloaded with most phones). So you can increase brightness whenever necessary.
#2 don’t use Live wallpapers, If possible keep your background completely black, Black color is battery-friendly as well as eyeball friendly.
#3 Don't keep Mobile data (2G/3G)/Wi-Fi/Bluetooth always on, simply turn off whenever not required.
#4 GPS is another biggest battery eater. Don't turn on GPS unless you need accurate data (for navigation).
#5 Turn off (or keep at least 1HR time between auto-refresh) BACKGROUND SYNC from social apps/web app, If you really don’t need them. e.g. Facebook, Twitter, TapaTalk, G+.
#6 Turn OFF vibrate/Haptic feedback feature as it consumes a lot of juice.
#7 Use WI-Fi whenever available (at home), it impacts less on battery then mobile data connection.
#8 Disable bloatwares on your phone e.g. Samsung's S apps WARNING: Don't disable important system app.
How to do this...
Go to Settings->Apps->All apps->Select app(e.g. Samsung apps store)->disable.
#9 Weak cell signals may cause battery drain to increase dramatically, because radio will try a lot to establish connection. So if you know there is very few possibility of getting connection then better turn on the Flight mode temporarily.
#10 Don't use WEB based widgets unless you really need them. They increase load on CPU and indirectly on battery.
#11 Some apps wakes your device partially to collect data aka a "WAKE LOCK". This happens many times in day. Run the app Wake lock detector and find out which app is causing too much wake locks. Wake locks increase battery drain. IMs are generally biggest source of wakelocks, Google apps are second.
#12 Don’t use task killer/RAM Boosters. Why?
Android generally stores data from apps which you started recently as Cache. This helps to improve loading apps quickly. If you kill any apps manually, some apps will restart automatically and finally impacts a lot on battery and CPU soon you will find your phone laggy.
#13 Reboot your phone at least once in week. (Press and hold power button —> select shutdown -> wait untill it shuts down -> to start again press and hold power button)
#14 Remove additional accounts (setting->accounts) from phone if you don’t use them.
#15 Don't let your phone getting too much hot. This improves battery lifespan.
#16 If you have 3G connection then Switch to GSM (2G) while browsing and switch to WCDMA (3G) when you want to download files or want to surf faster. Use Opera mini browser for just browsing its way faster than others and light on resources (battery, CPU)
#17 Turn off Auto-Rotation when not required.
Still you can’t get a day long battery then carry portable power banks
Advance tips:-

#1 *ROOT* Use Greenify (or Titanium backup) app and freeze useless apps e.g. Social apps. WARNING: If you freeze IM apps you won’t get any message until you de-freeze it again.
#2 Clear you cache at least once in month... Do this by Going to recovery —>Clear cache partition.
#3 *ROOT* Undervolt/Underclock your device by using SetCPU when you don’t need much processor power.
#4 *ROOT* Uninstall bloatwares which are useless in most cases. if you are not sure about certain app then better do a GOOGLE search about it.
#5 Use app Tasker it is multipurpose tool to automate android by creating different profiles (e.g. turn off connectivity when display is turned off for more than 5 minute and so on)
#6 *highlyAdvance* Install any battery friendly Kernel (such as Franco).
#7 *highlyAdvance* Set to powersaver Kernel governors when you don't need performence.

Hey! This is my first post of hopefully many more!
1) The most important one is set your brightness to AUTO. This is really important and easily adds up to 5 hrs of extra juice!
2) Don't run many background apps and kill apps that use network in the background!
3) Download a good battery saver app (Battery Doctor is my Favorite ) and let it optimize your settings for you!
4) Kill unused app repeatedly . Apps that run in the Background drain a lot of battery and RAM! You can see the app hogging your battery under Settings->Battery.
5) Charge your battery until 30% to 100% everytime.
6) Regularly Calibrate your battery . See this tutorial
Following these steps will easily get you a day+ juice with no compromise to your network or connectivity!

At least post 1st post with facts.
All above written by you are wrong except point no (2)
1) AUTO brightness is battery guzzler as it runs on light sensor. Read OP.
3) No need of battery saver app. They only do things which you can do from status bar. Switching off Wi-Fi, Bluetooth,data, brightness etc.
4) Read OP. ( that is original 11st post on this thread)
5)Charge battery when it reaches very low like 5-15%, don't unplug till 100%.
6)Calibration is only deleting batterystats.bin It does not increase battery . It only deletes battery use history.

Of course Cyanogenmod and AOSP give lot of battery life because they don't have bloat ware from manufacturer. When I use AOSP 2.3.7 I get 6-8 days backup(moderate use). With stock I get Max 3-4 days.

I don't, and will never use gapps or any google's apps.
I am experiencing a high and crazy performance using ntfs as androed installation.
I will never burn my money in ext2/3/4 or any ext device.
I will never pay absurds for unrooted phones to rooting only to purge gapps and gogle apps or any other kind of damned apps that stays cooking battery.
My next device, needs be like this screenshot, with ntfs, rooteable, rom choices, or DEATH!
I hate androids.
This is why i preffer write Androed
