Installation Instructions
Download, install and configure ivanich's 2.8.7.0 TWRP recovery from here.
Download and install the unofficial ROM through recovery from here.
Download and install the latest of my GApps packages from here.
Download and install the TWRP version of my odex package if desired from here. This essentially puts the dalvik-cache of system apps in /system which saves you some space in /data and also speeds up initial boot.
General Q/A
Q: Why SlimKat?
A: It is a great ROM and is very well suited for older devices.
Q: Why another SlimKat thread?
A: This is my own build with parts from various kernels that I feel are beneficial to pyramid users. It most likely won't be as stable as the official builds and therefore needs a separate thread.
Q: You just said it most likely won't be as stable. Does that mean it's buggy?
A: I will not release a build that doesn't work for me. The sensation is my only device and this build will always be my daily driver.
Q: Why not work with dexter93 to make the official build better?
A: That is my intention. We will all benefit from your support and testing. Let us know what works and what doesn't. Then it can be pulled into the official branch.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I enable root access?
System settings -> Developer options -> Root access
First set to Disabled (if not already) and then set to Apps only or Apps and ADB.
How do I change resolution/dpi/density?
Manual: With root explorer, edit /system/build.prop and change ro.sf.lcd_density=182 to ro.sf.lcd_density=240 and reboot.
App: Download Texdroider DPI from play store to change 182 to 240 and reboot. You can then uninstall the app.
How do I change CPU min/max speed, governors and IO schedulers?
Manual: With root explorer, edit /etc/init.d/89kernel init script (setting options are in the script).
App: Download Kernel Tuner from play store.
How do I submit a bugreport?
See the Slim website instructions here. Attach the report in this thread.
What firmware/radio should I use with this ROM?
For TMOUS try: 3.32.531.14 which comes with radio 11.69A.3504.00U_11.23.3504.07_M2
For non-TMOUS try 3.32/3.33 firmware and corresponding radios from: firmware and radios
Tips/Tricks
If you use google apps, install the biggest package that you need. You want to do this because those google apps will be installed into /system. I've seen many users talk about wanting the smallest gapps they can have and then downloading just what they need from the play store. This is not a good approach for our Sensation because we have a very large /system partition and a very small /data partition (by today's standards). So, a better approach would be to get the *full* gapps package and either remove the apps that you don't need or disable them.
Odex your /system apps. This will free up quite a lot of space in the /data/dalvik-cache folder which again will give you more room for apps. There are many odex scripts available on XDA to choose from and probably even some apps in the play store. You can also try out my flashable zip here (md5sum: 04320206ec11669b2da2f5340bb647f2). Flash it after flashing GApps.
Known Bugs
Battery calibration issue on first boot causes charging to stop at 90%. Charging is normal after reboot. (Appears fixed now)
It has been reported that some bluetooth devices will fail to connect.
It has been reported that some VOIP apps will not work (Line/Skype).
It has been reported that call recording apps will not work.

Good features! Thanks mate!
^^Hello, fellow Minchanin.
Xda: devdb? What does that green banner mean?
Are there any collaborative efforts between you and dexter?
Hello,
First off many thanks for your great work & contribution!
I would need S2W or a similar feature as the "Volume Rocker Wake" feature does not work in Slimkat. Would you have any recommendation for a custom kernel that I could flash that has such a feature?
Thank you.
what about cpu undervolt? is it working on this rom?
For sure, just tested this rom and its absolutely fast! With Lionheart governor and Sio I/O scheduler. But one question @LordNerevar, which option is the best for Multi-Core power savings?

Nothing special. Just that the ROM has been added to the XDA database: http://forum.xda-developers.com/devdb/

Not yet, but I hope there will be in the future (see the Q/A section).

Sultan's kernel had S2W for awhile but it caused lockups/reboots. I'll see if I can find why the Volume Rocker Wake doesn't work.

I believe that is a custom Sultan feature that I haven't implemented. I take it you found it beneficial?

ye, i think that battery drain is the major problem of aosp roms... so a fewer cpu voltage could help
btw thank you for still develop for our device :good:

Thank you. Let me outline what has happened so far: Clean install of Slimkat (v7.9) with a formatted SD card and the system fully wiped. "Volume Rocker Wake" is enabled, however, only works for a few seconds after the screen has turned off. It also works perfectly when the phone is connected to a USB charger.
Occasionally the wake function would work even when the phone isn't charging, but this happens fairly randomly, no obvious pattern.
First of all, great rom!
Feels smooth and a lot of features.
But....... what about the resolution?
statusbar clock and such is really small, icons in appdrawer too, it almost looks like the resoltion is set to high.
When using google stock launcher the icons are normal but statusbar is still much smaller then the stock rom.
Is this changeable?
Grtz,
Ruben

simply change density in build.prop to 240
Alternatively use TexDroid to change DPI to 240.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.texdroider.texdroider_dpi&hl=de
You need to grant root access in order for the tool to work.
Thanks for answering questions everyone! I've started an FAQ on the OP for the ones I've seen often on the Official SlimKat ROM thread.
I was able to fix the volume rocker wake bug in the kernel. It's working for me with and without a secure lockscreen enabled. Try it out if you need it. That along with all the 8.2 goodness from the Slim team is available in the 2nd post.
No way... Thank you very much! I shall give it a try tonight. I am very excited!
Just out of curiousity... What is a bug and if so what exactly was the problem?
Also would it make sense to report this back to the Slim Team, so they can fix this as well? I have seen other posts that report similar problems.
Thank you for you great support!
LordNerevar, your latest version fixed the volume rocker issue. Even better I did not have to clean-install, I simply upgraded from Dexter93's version 7.9 to yours and my phone works perfectly. I am more than happy and this has breathed new life into my old Sensation. Thank you very much!
Perhaps you can join forces with Dexter in that you let him know how you eliminated this bug?
Good job!
Upon closer examination of the code, I found that you can actually set /sys/keyboard/vol_wakeup to 1 and enable Volume Rocker Wake under Settings->Display as normal. This should even work with the Official versions. I will add this ability to the 89kernel init script.
Thank you, LordNerevar. Guess that is the fix I have been looking for. I never noticed that file.
Interestingly mine is still set to zero, but volume wake works nonetheless with your latest version.

That's correct. My latest version bypasses the need for that file. However, that file does serve a purpose and I was actually going to implement it when I found it already available. The purpose is that if you don't want volume rocker wake, having that tunable will keep the phone in sleep mode if the volume buttons are pressed. Without that file or with that file bypassed, if you have volume rocker wake disabled in display settings the phone comes out of sleep mode and just doesn't turn on the display.
So, with my next version you will need to enable the setting in 89kernel and in display settings for it to work.

Any Chinese (CHN, I9500ZCUxxx codename) Baseband/Modem will decrease call quality due to forced Wideband AMR
Rarely, when you wake-up the device, touchscreen will have a noticeable input lag, easily fixable by turning off and on the display. (H/W or S/W bug?)
Reporting Bugs
You are allowed to report bugs only in this thread. Before reporting a bug, please make sure you are running as stock as possible. This means no custom kernel, no custom framework modification, etc. If you are using any of the above modifications, please flash the rom again to get rid of the modifications before reporting.
REPORT BUGS IN THIS THREAD ONLY
Grab a logcat right after the problem has occurred. (Please include at least a few pages of the log, not just the last few lines, unless you know what you're doing.)
If it is a random reboot, grab /proc/last_kmsg. (Do not bother getting a logcat unless you can get it just before the reboot. A logcat after a reboot is useless)
If the problem disappears after running "setenforce 0" from a root shell, grab /data/misc/audit/audit.log
Remember to provide as much info as possible. The more info you provide, the more likely that the bug will be solved. The following is a useful format to follow. Note: If you can provide the latest night/build that the bug didn't exist, it would greatly help in tracking down what caused it.

Differences between GearCM (Optimized CyanogenMod) and Official CyanogenMod (NIGHTLY):
Degrated Shadow said:
Enough of those dumb questions..
The official CM rom is maintained by @Alberto96 and @intervigil
He makes the very recent changes here relating to performance.. which are then in time pushed to CM official rom. The kernel is different because it has selinux disabled and few minor tweaks you might not even notice.. this gearcm rom will have more performance. But CM rom will have their updated base changes which are included here with each update.
What I mean is you probably wont even notice what's different in terms of user interface.. gearcm will have more performance. Official cm will have updated sources. But it will include gearcm's changes in time as @Alberto96 pushes them to CM
You can decide by a simple choice. more performance and not-nightly updated sources or similar performance (improving with nightly updates) with updated sources. I would choose gearcm because of the reasons I mentioned above. Do what you will.. and let this be a note to everybody who ask this again and again and again. Don't spam the thread with same question in every alternate page.. Because there are other people who might have different problems they need to ask. Read atleast 15 previous pages and the first post changelog before asking the question. Reading most of the times will give you a solution and if not most of the info you will read will help you anyway.

FAQ (Frequently asked questions)
Where is "Developer Options" category?
To activate 'Developer Options' category in Settings you need to tap 7 times on 'Build number' located into Settings -> About Phone.
What can i do to fix VOIP audio calls?
There's not a real fix yet, so i found this useful workaround that could help you.
If you need to make a VOIP call:
1) Play something using stock music player (also third-party music players SHOULD be fine)
2) Do not pause audio playback
3) Make a call using your preferred VOIP app.
Or you can just use a Wired Headphone/Headset | BT Headphone/Headset.
This workaround should work also for incoming VOIP calls.
How can i solve problems with Hebrew language?
Go to "Developer Options" in Settings and check "Force RTL layout direction".
What can i do to reduce the "echo effect" while in-call?
Try to reduce in-call earpiece volume (if possible). Shouldn't be required on latest builds.
I'm having problems with battery life, what can i do?
1) Use "Greenify" to hibernate all apps with a "little cloud + 'Gcm' word inside" on the right of each app's name. Donation version is recommended because it allows deeper hibernation of apps
2) Disable "Location" or set it to mode "Battery Saving" (Settings -> Location)
3) Make sure that your 2G/3G mobile network signal level isn't always low or unstable
4) Deny "Wake Up" and "Keep Awake" permissions to Google and third-party apps. (Settings -> Privacy -> Privacy Guard -> Press menu button and check "Show built-in apps" -> Press menu button again and go to Advanced -> Horizontal Scroll to Device)
5) Disable "Sync" or sync only useful stuff like Contacts
6) Disable "Auto-rotate screen" (Settings -> Display & lights -> Rotation)
7) Use one of the latest Modem/Baseband listed on first post.
8) Disable Ambient Display
9) Install Xposed Framework and configure Amplify
If this isn't enough then replace your battery and/or reduce your phone usage. :silly:
Is GearCM OTA supported?
Yes (Since 20150707 Build)
Why is my phone over-heating while playing heavy-games or running heavy-apps?
Use a bit your brain to explain why. High CPU and GPU usage = high heat production. Your phone will automatically throttle CPU when needed so don't worry, it is safe and normal.
Can I use another kernel instead of the one included in the zip?
No. Only use the included kernel for 100% compatibility, bug reports with non-standard kernel will be ignored.
Can i disable S-View cover features (lock/unlock)?
Not yet.
*** IR Remote app isn't working anymore/was working on previous builds/causes my phone to crash, what can i do?
Contact *** IR Remote app developer.
Any question about "Can't connect to camera" issue
Do not "stress" camera because we don't use yet a proper implementation. (Exynos limited open-source env.) Just Open & Close Camera apps carefully without force-closing them. (and do not do this frequently)
Oh yessssss!! Thank you thank you thank you
Thank you @Alberto96

Yessss. Thank you very much @Alberto96 Need we flash gapps uprading from another build of CM11?
Maybe for this first complete release wipe all data and flash latest gapps. It's better for no risk of bugs.

Ok. Thank you
Touch keys stay on when touching the screen. They supposed to go off until have been touched.
Home button delay. Takes about a second to respond. Kinda like the delay when svoice is on.
Maybe a bug fficial launcher takes alot of gpu power. When browsing the pages my gpu instantly goes up to 400 mhz and above. Not happens in nova.
Your doing a great works we all priciate the time and effort on this. Huge thanks.

U r welcome! Cooking ROMs has become my hobby. It keeps me alive!
I would greatly appreciate it if you give me some feedback in return! :good:
@spezi77, hat's off to your talents. I have flashed 3 of your roms
from Xperia Z > CM-11 KitKANG > Carbon
they are all ready well made and at very high standard.
Omni is the next rom that can match CM. I can't wait to try.
off topic, are you working on a Sense based rom?
U Rock!

Relieved to hear that it's running good. I have asked devs from omni-team about the BT and UMS issues. Maybe someone can help me to find the right fix..
Nice rom, very fast and smooth.
Sent from my HTC Desire using Xparent Blue Tapatalk 2
My experience on the first build of the Omni rom is smooth and fast response.
On Installation process, please add "flash supersu zip" before InstallA2SD,
Boot ROM and let it settle down (3-5 min)
Install A2SD
because root access is required.
Do you find develop in Omni is easier or harder than CM?
I still ran out of space quickly using a2sd, but mount2sd is working sweet, 20+ apps so far.
Rom has been very stable for me, compared with other kitkat roms I've used. Good work

For softkeys try Xposed and gravitybox. Or you can edit the build prop yourself but I forget the line you need to add

Ah ok. Can't remember if with gravitybox you can adjust the size or not.
Super!
Quick and easy installation.. Super quick and smooth Rom!!
Just one small issue with the default messaging app - outgoing SMS shows up blank, although the messages are getting delivered.
Something to do with the theme colors I think. Just moved to some other messaging app.
All-in-all - a great rom -
Active display and other cool features too!
I don't know if it is a placebo - but the battery seems to last longer :victory:
Thanks Spezi77!

I believe that longer battery life comes from SmartassH3.
SmartassH3 - based on SmartassV2 with parameters tuned by H3ROS (thanks) -
more efficient frequency scaling - not ramping too high when not needed this could potentially
result in better battery life

Well, it is hard to give you a true and general statement.
I was working approximately for 2-3 months to make my debut with Kitkang. At that time I have invested a lot of time in researching, discussing and learning from other xda devs. That was really a great time! OmniROM took me less time (maybe 2-3 weeks) because I was already aware of all the tricks to make it run on HTC Desire.
I admire the unique aspects of OmniROM -- I like the innovative and experimental approach and thinking different -- "Omni isn’t better, just different"!
So if I were to start or get involved in feature developments, I would definitely go for Omni.
P.S.: I believe that with one of the next releases we can expect the much-discussed "Multiwindow" feature.
I am proud to present you with an incredible smooth and feature rich AOSP based ROM.

Hey @spezi77 you're working hard on different kitkat roms which I find them all Identical, don't you think its better to provide one stable and complete rom instead of many different which all contain problems? I'm not here to disappoint you, but I think all these roms could be converted to each other by only some launchers and tweaks. I hope some day I can use one of your very best roms.
thanks indeed...

True words.. no worries, it's really hard to disappoint me.
Frankly, I am just learning about Android developments and versioning while looking for the most suitable and stable kk rom for my device. I enjoy the creative process of building roms -- especially by trying out different approaches, roms and kernel mods -- and sharing the results with you. There are a lot of dev teams out there borrowing features from each other -- giving their roms quite a similar feature set (why not?). But imho there are still noticeable differences! And even if we only talk about a specific look and feel or small innovations (have you ever seen Omni? sorry for OT).
With reference to the current bugs, you should not forget that most of them are common for all 4.x roms because they depend on the kernel.
However, enough said and I guess that by now you guys got really oversaturated! I will try my best to tone it down and focus on improving what is here!
Cheers!
I have different opinion on this. I agree that quality should be in favor over quantity.
We should be graceful @spezi77 bring us many choice to choose from, and then you can select the rom you like
and be more active in that thread, then natural selection will take it course.
@spezi77 I honor your overwhelming passion to the xda community and Desire, and your next great rom.

Hi, thx for your hard work and all the fantastic Roms for our desire. could i ask how i can transculent the statusbar? ican`t find something. Thank you.
Although I'd already uploaded the source to github, I was asked a few times to release the kernel of my OmniROM6 build. Frankly, I only contributed a small part of it. Most of the codes are here and there from other devices and/or developers. I just modified a few and patched a few.
This week, I was packaging a kernel for my other devices. Thanks to the AIK (Android image Kitchen) by @osm0sis, it make my life much easier. I think spending a few more minutes for my Nexus 7 is not a bad idea. I don't know if it would work for your existing ROM. I only have three success reports. Fail and success reports, suggestions and comments are welcome.
This might just another one time deal as my TWRP. I'll make this thread simple. Anyway, it's done.
Release Notes:
2016/9/15: Finally a long holiday come. It's about time we migrated to Nougat. Most of the custom ROMs are busy for their first release. In the meantime, I may consolidate the kernel and device trees. After struggling for a few hours, I finally stop the sepolicy from denials for the first time.... The test AOSP-N builds are unloading now. See post#184 for details.

2016/6/7: Android N preview2 zip version was uploaded to experimental pool.
2016/6/5: Android N preview2 testing boot and system image in experimental pool. Read post #135 for detail.
2016/3/30: Add the power HAL with frequency adjustments and set feature support.
2016/3/18: Upload a test kernel to experimental pool.
2016/3/14: Bug fix in PerformanceControl.apk and the final code for kexec patch.
2016/3/13: Add the experimental pool for the testing builds.
2016/2/29: Seems it is not a one time thing now so I added the Change log section. The initial commit of Tegra3 Support is added to the PerformanceControl apk. In addition, I also include the Nexus 7 support in the Tools page. Wiping caches and flashing images are working for Nexus 7 now. A bug in Set on Boot is also fixed.
2016/2/16: Seems most of the fellow ROM builders had included the rotation patch in their kernel. I have no problem spending another few more minutes for the user oriented request. I prepared another zip. The only difference between 0214 and 0216 zip is 0216 included the rotation patch. If anyone have problem with rotation stopped after long deep sleep, you may try the 0216 version.
2016/2/14: This is not an update. There are requests for LP and KK ROMs. I added the fstab for those earlier versions. The script was modified. It will check the /system/build.prop for Android version and copy the corresponding fstab to the ramdisk. cheers!
Theory:
The source is from the stock AOSP kernel (3.1.10) for grouper. The kernel binary is more or less the same for most of the ROMs posted. The major difference would be the ramdisk. With this in mind, I just replace the kernel binary and keep the existing ramdisk. The existing kernel might not have F2FS support so I replace the File System Table (fstab.grouper) too.
Even though this is from my OmniROM6 (MM) ROM, it might also work for LP or earlier. There are two default fstab (MM and LP) inside. For those who want to use their own, you may replace the file /data/AIK-mobile/XX/fstab.grouper inside the zip. Where XX=MM for ROMs from 6.0.0, XX=LP for ROMs before 6.0.0 (LP and KK, JB not tested)
To ROM builders:
If you want to enable the native DT2W in Display settings, please include the following lines in:
device/asus/grouper/overlay/frameworks/base/core/res/res/values/config.xml
You may enjoy the DT2W feature now

What exactly does one have to modify in the fstab.grouper file to make it compatible with LP? Or is there a pre-defined file that can replace the current one for MM present in the .zip file?

The only difference between MM and LP would be the OTG line.
Usually, the one found in cm-12.1 would work for all LP. Unzip this one View attachment fstab.grouper.zip
I have changed a few flags. Other developers might have other changes too.
The one inside your LP ROM would be better for your ROM. You may copy it out from root directory after start up.
If there is no F2FS support in your ROM's fstab,
1. Let say the one inside my zip is the base fstab.
2. the one in you LP ROM is target fstab.
3. copy the 4 lines with /data and /cache from the base fstab to the target fstab.
4. replace the base fstab with the target fstab inside my zip.
That's all
note:Those lines are quite long and might extended to a few lines.
Good luck!
Edit: Starting from version 20160214, there are two folders MM and LP which correspondinng to ROMs from or before Android 6.0.0. There is a default fstab inside each. For those who want to replace it with their fstab. It should be put inside the corresponding folder.

Same as the above in post#3.
There is a fix for auto rotate implemented in other grouper kernels that appears to be missing from this one, but it's nice to have the clock speeds to play with :good:
Thanks! I'll test it tomorrow.

But where to find the performance apk? Or do I have to compile it from source?
Thanks!

The audio and rotation fix are not in the kernel. I did it in the platform. Ask your ROM's builder for detail.

Thanks! I'll test it tomorrow.

Booted on KK/4.4.4! Will go on testing!
But where to find the performance apk? Or do I have to compile it from source?
Thanks!

The apk is in the system. It is in /system/apps/PerformanceControl/PerformanceControl.apk
I forgot if KK's system apps was inside a folder. If not, move it out.
Good luck
Found & installed -> works!
GPU is (obviously) for a different HW, correct?

Yeah. The apk was for my other devices. There are apks like trickster mod can modify Tegra GPU. I seldom change it in my tilapia so I didn't add the extra codes. (lazy too )
I included this apk because there is settings for DT2W. The sources are in my github. It would be quite easy for others to port their own.
EDIT:Can you tell me which ROM you are using?
Unofficial SlimKat 9.1 (see: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3214142)
Many thanks for your effort!
@daniel_hk regarding screen rotation, I suppose you missed this commit. It's about handling the timer values in MM. I first handled this issue in frameworks/base, too, but the kernel patch is more easy to maintain.

I saw it in manta's commit too.
Since I'm maintaining a few devices, I want to make it common. I did it in the platform. Same source would work for the three kernel sources I'm working on.

If you meant the download link to AndroidFileHost, I just checked and its OK. May be it's temperately unavailable at your side.
Hell yes! Finally a OC kernel for the Nexus 7 on MM! I have been trying to make one for hours though couldnt work it out! Can i beg for a commit to be added so us Tiapila users can use it too?
https://github.com/jfmcbrayer/grouper-kernel/commit/3f0c118b4ebc45045049e7e01c6deae5bdddb243
This commit stops the 3G wakelock that cripples the battery life on all Tiapila devices on version 5.0 and above. Battery life is like 20 hours even with no screentime.
Pretty please! This commit is already included on both CM13 and Pure Nexus Kernels for Grouper though those Kernels don't have OC!
Thanks very much.

Why beg for the things already there? If you read my rather short thread. It was already there. Grouper and Tilapia share the same kernel. I already implemented it in the early stage of my Omni6 months ago...
LineageOS is a free, community built, aftermarket firmware distribution of Android 7.1 (Nougat), which is designed to increase performance and reliability over stock Android for your device.
It is based on the Android Open Source Project with extra contributions from many people within the Android community. It can be used without any need to have any Google application installed. You will need to provide your own Google Applications package (gapps). LineageOS does still include various hardware-specific code, which is also slowly being open-sourced anyway.

Root Access and Theming Guide
Want Root access??
Just flash with TWRP the LineageOS SU Addon zip file found on the download section... Flash it after you have flashed Google Apps!!!
Then enable the developer options menu with this guide:
To enable Developer Options, open the Settings screen, scroll down to the bottom, and tap About phone or About tablet.
Scroll down to the bottom of the About screen and find the Build number.
Tap the Build number field seven times to enable Developer Options. Tap a few times and you’ll see a toast notification with a countdown that reads “You are now X steps way from being a developer.”
When you’re done, you’ll see the message “You are now a developer!”. Congratulations. Don’t let this newfound power go to your head.
Tap the Back button and you’ll see the Developer options menu just above the “About Phone” section in Settings. This menu is now enabled on your device—you won’t have to repeat this process again unless you perform a factory reset.
Now go into the developers options menu and find the option to enable root access!!
Flashed the SU Addon and now you want to remove it from your phone??
Just download the LineageOS SU Addon remover and flash it with TWRP...
