[Q] unroot whilst bigpart - Xoom Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Just a quick question. My xoom (wingray) is running 4.4.4 bigpart, which i would like to unroot and return to stock as i am concidering selling it.
Can i just unroot and re-lock the bootloader or will i need to undo the bigpart partition first.
Thanks in advance

Only way your going to re-lock the bootloader is to completely undo bigpart and re-install a stock firmware. Hope you have the stock images around (or can find them somewhere,) because last I checked, Motorola took them down.
Alternatively, you could just reformat the data partition and sell it with the disclaimer that it's not stock.

Simple root for the i9023 with 4.0.4?

Has anyone tried to root their i9023 with 4.0.4 using doomlord's easy rooting toolkit? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1321582
I tried it when I had 2.3.6 and it worked perfectly but want to update to 4.0.4 now.
If doomlord's doesn't work, is there any similar one click rooting? Also, when I rooted, it didn't erase my data and apps. Will that be the same? Thanks
I guess not. Been searching and couldn't find a non-destructive one and one as a simple click without needing cwm.
There's none that I am aware of. However, it's not really that complicated to flash the right SU zip, and if you don't want to flash cwm you can simply fastboot boot cwm.img and it will leave stock recovery intact and ready after you flashed everything.

Couple things if you're already rooted on gingerbread do a nandroid back up. Put that and anything else you want to keep on your computer. Unlock the bootloader and restore your backup and update.
Stop messing around and unlock the bootloader.

How can he do a backup if the bootloader is locked = no cwm recovery? He's out of luck. Best thing he can do is backup the SD card and that's it. The rest is lost
Edit: failed to read sorry. Didn't notice the gingerbread part. Anyway if he's on stock and one clicked rooted he still doesn't have cwm so he can't make a nandroid, he can use titanium backup and save apps and data.

I thought that locked bootloader prevented the flash of any kind of unsigned .img even if you have root.
Guess i was wrong ;D
That's what you get when your first step with an android phone is unlock the bootloader
Not a one size fits all. Some phones all you need is root to flash a custom recovery and roms/kernels.
Others it can be a mess. Like the HTC g2 or even now the one x on att. Got the entire s on/ s off encryption nonsense and so on.

He can flash a new recovery through the OS if he has root access only. Unlocked bootloader only provides fastboot support.
If you are fully stock (bootloader, recovery, no su), the only current way to root 4.0.4 is to have an unlocked bootloader.

Yeah that's what make my confusion. My old HTC Magic needed unlocked bootloader to flash a recovery.

Yeah about that i was pretty sure you needed unlocked bootloader, but about CWM flash i was convinced that you needed also unlocked bootloader, but as stated above, it's just for some devices.
Thank to all that responded. All this talk just flew over my head ... guess that's what I get for using simple one clicks
Let me try to straighten some stuff out.
How would I use titanium backup?
Do I titanium backup while it's still on gingerbread or after I OTA the ics 4.0.4?
Edit: duh! I can't use Ti backup after OTA ics because phone not rooted yet.
After backing up with Ti, I thought any attempt to root will erase all. Does the Ti backup not get erased?
Ti backup only backs up my app and the data to those apps, not how I customize my homescreen's widgets and notification bar, right?
So, I would have to do all that stuff over?
If I don't want to unlock bootloader or install cwm, any way to root and leave stock recovery intact?
Lazer Bear posted "if you don't want to flash cwm you can simply fastboot boot cwm.img and it will leave stock recovery intact and ready after you flashed everything."
Is that possible and how do I do it? Does that erase everything too?
Thanks to all!

[Q] Can the bootloader be downgraded

Hi all,
After having successfully rooted my TF700 lately (while keeping the bootloader locked), I've been looking into unlocking the bootloader so I can flash a custom ROM (thinking about CROMI). Before flashing a custom ROM, people seem to recommend getting nvflash in order.
My problem is, however, I'm already on JB, and my understanding is that you need an ICS .26 bootloader (or earlier) in order to setup nvflash. I know that it's possible to downgrade the firmware from JB to ICS (in fact, this is what I did in order to be able to root my device - going from the latest JB to ICS .30); however, after searching around a fair bit, I'm still not clear on whether it's possible to revert the bootloader to an earlier version.
Can someone please clarify this for me. If I've already updated my device to JB, is there absolutely no way for me to set up nvflash?
Thanks!

Once you're on JB, the lowest you can downgrade is ICS .30. You're too late for Nvflash. No way around it.
Okay... sucks, but thanks for the info. That's what I was afraid of.
Since that is the case, how critical is it to set up nvflash before getting into the whole custom ROM thing? Am I crazy to get into it without nvflash as a backup plan?

There is a bug in the bootloader that you should be aware of: If your recovery is broken because it is
* too old, designed for the ICS bootloader, or
* you erased it via fastboot
then you should NEVER EVER choose "wipe data" from the bootloader menu. Except you want an expensive paperweight. Because then you can't even enter fastboot to fix it. This is the only situation where nvflash would really help you out.
If you always test any newly flashed recovery first by using the power+volume buttons, you are safe.
Thanks, _that!

I know man who did wipe data from bootloader, it didn't brick him He has done this today on unlocked, TWRP and CROMI on TF300T. The newest bootloader fix it.

It would not brick him if he installed the latest version the either recovery -- that's exactly what _that said.
Simply put, just keep your recovery up-to-date when major versions release and update the bootloader. When things such as this happen, they will be posted in the rom threat, just make sure you read thoroughly. Also, read the change log before upgrading the recovery, and if you use TWRP use GooManager and it will upgrade it for you at a tap of a button.

Today's (03/05/13) OTA

Haven't seen anyone post about this (even after doing a Google search), but Verizon has started sending out the OTA today. My question is this: since my bootloader in unlocked, and I'm rooted, can I restore back to my stock ROM and take the update? Is there a possibility that I'd completely lose root? Obviously I'd lose superuser and such, but would it replace my bootloader and custom recovery?
Thanks in advance for any helpful replies. I've been around android for a while now, but I'm new to Samsung phones, and how the bootloaders work. (I'm used to HTC where you S-OFF and you're good to go)

Yup, you can restore back to stock (via nandroid or Odin) and take the update. You should switch back your recovery if you restore a stock nandroid though.

You answered your question, if you lose SU, you lose root. Verizon OTA's will replace your bootloader and custom recovery if you force the install to take through your custom recovery. It should fail initially but I've read around that folks installed the OTA in recovery.
I'll check my wife's phone tonight. If she gets the ota I will pull it from the cache and extract the boot loader and recovery and rezip it and see if it will flash via twrp

Ok thanks for the reply. What do you mean by switch back my recovery? I'm currently on TWRP which is what I rooted with, and I've been using it since. I just want a completely untampered stock OTA of the latest OTA.

I mean, the OTA will fail if you just try to accept it right now. It would also fail if you switched back to your stock nandroid because you still have TWRP installed too. That's how its always been. Switching to the stock recovery, you could use EZ Recovery to do so, would resolve that.
I've read that you can still have a custom recovery installed and successfully take the OTA with a custom recovery installed but idk the exact steps to take to make this happen. Since I have no need for accepting OTA's I try to learn from what people post here.
Edit: Seems my OTA/custom recovery inquiry has been answered pretty thoroughly here (post #10). You could try those steps if you desire too.

How do I get this update installed and keep root/unlocked/custom recovery in place?
Also want to keep Google Wallet working correctly.

Hey guys.
I've been doing some reading in preparation to the lollipop update. And I think that I would like to take my Nexus 5 fully back to stock, locked bootloader, stock recovery, stock ROM(Lollipop).
I'm currently on 4.4.4 rooted, unlocked bootloader and custom recovery.
With that said and after reading this tread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2513701 I've some questions:
What happens to my custom recovery when I flash a stock image via fastboot?
Can I have a custom recovery, be rooted and have a custom recovery (fully working)?

If you flash the factory image you'll lose the custom recovery. Flashing the factory image will bring your phone back to the way it was when you first bought it

I'm not saying I want to go to stock and they root and custom recovery, although that's my only option if I want to update.
I was just asking because I was curious how these three things work together.

Factory images that return everything to stock, obviously remove root and recovery. If you don't want root or custom recovery and want to run 100% stock, that is your best option. However if you do want root and custom recovery, that is the worst (most time wasting and unnecessary) process to follow. There are much MUCH better options for the rooted user.
Also OTA updates are messy. I would recommend anyone familiar with flashing factory images, use that way to update instead of OTA (if they are and wish to remain unrooted)

How to return M8 to (mostly) stock for OTA?

I did do a lot of searching before posting, so I apologize if I've overlooked something. What I would like to do is return my Verizon M8 to mostly stock, with the exception being that I would like to keep S-OFF, in order to be able to accept OTA updates. I'm not concerned about losing root, so if that's a consequence of the process then I'm OK with it. I would also like to do a complete wipe of my phone as a part of this process so I'm not concerned about losing any of my data, either.
Here is the current status of my phone:
Android 5.0.1
HTC Sense 6.0
TWRP Recovery
S-OFF
Rooted
Is it possible to keep S-OFF and be able to do OTA updates?

Why not just flash the s-on ruu I have posted? You won't lose data. Nothing will wipe app wise. You will update firmware and rom this way plus you can either flash twrp and supersu afterwards or stay stock afterwards and be able to take any ota (if the m8 were to get anymore.)
