Will you use a case on the new X? I feel like the phone would survive a regular drop without any help but could get a tempered glass protector to ensure the screen was safe. The only thing I'm really worried about is the little dings to the bezel degrading the value. Im just not too happy making this phone any bigger than it is
I'm in the same boat about the size, I may do a screen protector. Also dont want to hide the ebony back I ordered. Bumpers make it feel unnaturally large.

i think all cases make the phone feel larger lol. idk, i had no problems with my bumper on my n4, so i feel it won't be a problem with the Moto X
you could get a clear case. that way, you can show off the ebony back and not get a bumper
i'm not worried about the glass breaking. i'm more worried about damaging the phone itself. i decided to take the case off of my current X. a few days later i went out and got really wasted. i dropped my phone twice that night, more than i'd dropped a device in the past 5 years combined. it's dinged up but the glass never cracked. moto sure knows how to make some tough phones.
definitely getting a case. nothing good out so far that i can see.

I think you are hitting the nail on the head. I don't think the phone will break but will chip, ding, etc. And that will drive me nuts. Moto did such a good job contouring the phone and such though, it sucks to go ruin it with a case.

the moral of the story, don't get wasted.
I dropped my old moto x on the street. The screen damaged completely. For the new moto I still don't want a bumper but a screen protector. Any recommendations?

actually, it would be the combination of don't get wasted + ride a bicycle + try to look at your phone + when it's like 4am. i've gotten wasted lots and lots of times and managed to hold onto my device.
I stopped using cases because it take away the look of the phone. But I will use tempered glass screen protector for front, and XtremeGuard screen protector for the back, or a bumper if it's not too bulky.

Yea XtremeGuard is interesting but I'm more concerned about the actual bumper around the phone getting nipped and such. None cover that.
I may get a bumper and a screen film.

no difference between a bumper and a tpu case at that point. the bumper increases overall thickness of the device

Yes, my point though is that I have no reason to cover my leather back. I paid for it, why would I cover it? I just want to keep the screen and andean from being scrapped up.

Makes sense.
I've never used a case on any phone, I used a bumper on the iPhone 4 (due to the antenna issue) and for a short period on the M8, but I hate cases. We spend all this time focusing on appeal and design of phones, and cases throw that out the window. They are large enough as is. That said, I have also never broken a phone. No dings, no chips, no cracked screens etc.. Worst I have had is light scratching on the back from placing on desk/tables/etc... So I guess I am particularly careful, even when drunk.
I am currently using one only because I tend to deploy a lot and had an accident with my old Moto X. I have a combination Otter Box and a tempered glass screen protector and I like it. I adds a ton of bulk to my phone but I put only my phone in one pocket so I have enough room
I usually get a holster and clip, but this time I got the tempered glass and the Verizon hard shell case with clear back. Didn't really make phone bigger, protects the edges and I can see the bamboo back. Love it. Now I have to get used to carrying in my pocket.

I went an ATT store to get a new SIM card and I had a look at the white s4 they had on display. The unit was next to bright light source and it was super sunny outside. I reflected light into screen and there were quite a few micro scratches on the screen. Wiped it several times and the scratches didnt move or fade the slightest bit. Not surprised. So the same story goes for Gorilla Glass 3, the glass is strong, the oleophobic coating will micro scratch. You see a scratch test videos on youtube for every new phone release showing how it doesnt get scratched....dont believe the hype.....that coating can get scratched. Get a screen protector if you are OCD about the screen. Sorry for the PSA....but I know a "oh no, my month old S4 is scratched" will come soon.
Oh i know this would happen lol. I'm ordering a screen protector this weekend. If its glass, it will scratch, there is no way around it.

I go through this cycle when I first get a device where I buy screen protectors and cases like a madman (eventually settling on one case and removing the SP), but I refuse to dump cash into screen protectors again. I won't put those garbage plastic protectors ones on my phone; they degrade the quality and experience severely. Plus, what if I have a warranty issue and have a glass protector installed. There goes $50 ($35 + replacement of $15) and that is assuming I don't mess up the install.
I'm attempting to go easy on this one, folks.

Micro scratches come even if you go easy. I had a GS2 that got scratched on day 2 from the studs on the sides of my jeans pocket! My BB playbook.....yup im a one of those suckers.....got scratched from a wipe with a microfiber cloth ( probably had sand on it). I like to just be able to wipe my phone on my shirt without caring whats on it and put throw it in my pocket. Im willing to sacrifice some screen smoothness/more glare for that. Ive always had good results with Spigen ultra crystal protectors and ghost armor. Very little image degradation.

Maybe I'm one of the few and proud smartphone owners who never get scratches on the screen, better yet I have never even dropped a smartphone (4 years & running)... No case & SP for me, I don't need it (or want it). As for my friends & family... they need cases built like a tank.
My phones are always naked.. No case, no screen protectors and no problems..
Maybe I am just lucky..

the thing is these scratches can only be seen in super bright light and in direct sunlight and only in certain angles...that's why they are called microscratches
every phone developes them after some use.....it's just a matter of if you notice them or not

I agree. But I always buy a minimalistic case at first. Usually it's TPU. Something cheap but thin. Then I'll free it once in a while. The screen for this phone is $335. A $6 case was an easy decision

I was in Best Buy today looking for a case and noticed the micro scratches on another S4 so I bought a screen protector. I almost bought the S View case but wasn't impressed with the amount of protection. I also thought they would have made the cover magnetic so that it wouldn't just blow open on the way to the ground. Ended up buying a bulkier case than I like. Last year I dropped my GS3 on the second day I owned it and chunked the corner of phone. I find that with new phones you tend to drop more because you are always holding it versus it being in your pocket after you are bored/used to it.
I'm pretty bad about noticing any type of scratch on my screen. I have insurance on my phone, with a case and screen protector (Zagg HD) at all times.
People abuse demo units like crazy. I witnessed a guy purposefully scratching at the screen with his keys when no employees were looking to see if it scratched easily

There are so many drop tests on the youtube of the Note 4. The thing looks pretty indestructible. I mean sure you'll get a scratch, but I would still rather get scuffs and scratches and enjoy using it naked. Food for thought! Of course it hurts resale value, no doubt.
never been a case person although I always use tempered glass on the front. I would however be interested in a slickwrap for the note but I can't find em anywhere. I just love the carbon fibre feel.
I just put this on my iphone

Totally agree! Screen protection seems like a waste to me with gorilla glass 3, maybe even down grading due to loss of clearness.
My Galaxy S3 doesn't have a scratch on it after 3 years and I never used a screen protector.
I use a leather pouch and run the phone in hand naked!
That said I'm super good with phones and many people need the protection, I get that.
I put my phone inside a cloth pouch with velco that my wife made. I read putting in on a case with get metal chaffing on the side after a while.
I am a careful person. When I take out my phone, I always check what floor (hard or soft) I am on, believe it or not.
My biggest concern would be putting the phone on the table as the camera is raised.
Using only a fit leather pouch for carrying around, phone itself is naked and without a screen protector. I dont really care about the resale value dropping if i get some tiny scratches since the value in 2 years will be less than 1/3 anyway. Its a phone not my house after all.
I've said this before elsewhere, but it's really easy to replace the frame of the phone if you get nicks around the side or scratches on the camera glass.
Just need to buy a replacement frame online and unscrew a few screws. Frames will probably be around $10-15, so if you don't think you'll drop your phone, there's no real need to get a case.
2 years have a cash long time to never drop a phone. You keep your phone with you almost all the time and frequently pull it out of your pocket. You use it when you're drunk and dead tired. You use it when you're woken up in the middle of the night. For at least one year (for most people). Probably 2 years. That's a very long time to just assume you won't drop it because your lifestyle isn't "extreme".
I've had my Galaxy s3 for over two years. I dropped it once. Onto concrete from six feet off the ground. I'm very careful with my phone, but I'm glad I had a case that night.
Just like driving... no matter how careful YOU are, it's not always you that causes the accident.
All it takes is a stray elbow or someone not paying attention to cause a major issue.
I applied a glass screen protector and put it in a slim case before I even turn it on for the first time. I switched from my trusty S4, which I've had in a case since day 1 and I only used it naked when I got the notification that my Note 4 has been dispatched. I just can't feel safe enough without body and screen protection!!
Well i drink to much and belive it or not ihave never droped my phone [emoji6]

I am using everything naked except the camera lens. I cut out glossy screen protector plastic and put that over lens. I had lots of scratches in lens of S2. In Note 1, flip cover raised and didn't have to protect lens. I had used similar protection in N3 too.
Note 4
I just put on a skinomi full body protector. There is a small protection for the camera (similar to the film that was on it when you take it out of the box). So the back and sides are sticky. The top part will attract lint since I put that part in my pocket first. Just waiting for the xtremeguard glass protector to come in and I'm all set. Now just look for a good heavy duty case for the times I may need it.
I just ordered my new Moto X 2014, I'm actually getting it for free to replace my old Moto X.
What are some good case and screen protector combinations? I know in the past I've had some trouble with a case AND a screen protector, it's sometimes one or the other. I'd prefer a clear case, but I'll probably end up getting more than 1 anyways.

Just got mine as well here is what I have found so far:
All tempered glass is a waste of money for this model none if it fits right at all due to the rounded edges
I would ASSUME the older plastic style ones MIGHT work better but read they also dont work that well
Most cases that say they are clear are actually frosted and that for me defeats the purpose of customizing the back
So I am going naked screen and hula case and will carry the phone in a belt pouch. Not the perfect solution but for me its acceptable. I would have preferred a strong clear tpu case (most turn yellow), I dont want a hard case, and would have love tempered glass on this but they simply dont adhere correctly.
There you have it the sad but true facts about cases and screen protectors from the research I have done. Hopefully some others in here can give you better news

I don't mind a hard case and not a fan of the glass screen protectors. I like the film ones. My last film protector made it a matte screen and took the glare away. It was fantastic! And it worked with the case. But it's the only smartphone that I've had where screen protector AND case can be used.

I love the look, not sure it would truly give a huge amount of protection but should protect the edges of the glass on the screen which i read is the most vulnerable part of the phone. It does have a little but of movement when you hold the phone (aka wiggles slightly) but it also adds more grip, i have a plastic backed phone.. Those damn beveled edges, nice concept, nightmare in reality. They are why no glass or other screen protector will truly fit right.

When holding or using the phone its fine. I am also extremely OCD and when it moves/wiggles is like when you just tap the side with your finger you can feel it move very slightly, very slight;y but for me noticeable, but not enough to get rid of the case just makes the phone look awesome.

I'm leaning towards the Hula for more everyday use I think, and buying another case from amazon for when i need more protection. Weird question, but do you think there's enough give with the Hula case where it would fit around the Moto X in a thin TPU case? I like the TPU cases but worry about the protection or lack thereof. Just wondering if it'd be possible to use them and occasional put the Hula Case around them for extra protection. Of course the buttons probably wouldn't work then...

You wont be able to use the two together, to much of a lip on the back with the hula case. Even if you did somehow fit it on the tpu would never touch the back of the phone just the lip around the edge. TPU will likely give more protection then hula but hula will likely give more grip then a tpu case.
New to the X, is it worth while getting a screen protector? Case is on its way, but with Gorilla Glass 3, is it truly worth the extra to cover the screen? Probably will end up with one but wanted some other opinions!

That is completely up to you but I can tell you this based on my research and personal experience:
There is not a tempered glass screen protector on the market for the 2014 that adheres properly. Not one of them works well and thus dont bother with those. The 2014 tapered edges on the glass are the issue. I have HEARD of similar issues with PET style screen protectors but never messed with those as they never felt right to me.
Lastly everything I have read says those tapered edges o the glas DO make it more prone to crack or brake on a drop so you need SOMETHING to protect the glass edges. Full case, hula bumper, something....

A lot of the cracking that people report is from dropping their phones, not taking the Hula on and off. The Hula is designed to absorb the shock of a drop and it breaks so that the phone does not. Better that your $20 bumper break than your $600 phone.
I take my Hula off and on all of the time and it has never cracked. I think people are dropping their phones and the Hula is doing exactly what it is supposed to do - absorbing the shock, which can result in it cracking instead of your phone.
I just got my essential phone and I'm really honestly digging it. I think that it's a very nice phone that fits my needs well.
However, within a day and a half I have already scratched my screen. Its dead center on the screen and like an inch long Literally got the phone on Saturday and scratched it by Monday early AM. I didn't do anything with the phone besides take it in and out of my pocket. Didn't even make it to work with the phone yet. So I'm pretty upset about that.
I know it's gorilla glass 5, but I have never scratched a phone so quick before. Hell my old phone (Moto X pure) Only had one small scratch after running it for 2.5 years without any screen protection at all, including numerous drops and rough handling.
So I guess a screen protector is a must. I ordered a tudia case and a tempered glass screen protector off Amazon. The screen protector is garbage. I hate it. The edges of the screen protector do NOT stick down, even without the case. The edge all the way around the screen is lifted. It looks terrible.
Are there any screen protectors for this phone that are actually decent? I would rather deal with the chance of more scratches than stare at this awful screen protector with unstuck edges.
Photo of the terrible edges.
I'm curious to know too
I haven't found a good tempered glass for this phone. They all seem to have issues. I've been using the IQ Shield wet install screen protector. Not tempered glass but looks and feels great (almost as smooth as glass), self healing and works with cases if you get the case friendly version.

glass screen protectors are nicer, but they suck on this phone.
I went with wet install plastic in the end because it does the main reason for one, protect from scratches, I'm confident it will.
I just hate the wet install process.
but my experience with glass is it doesn't protect from breaking anyway. any significant hit that would break the screen will break the screen no matter what. I think a bumper case is most effective.
I'm using the this one.

You need to clean your screen really, really, really good before you apply it.
Any oils will show up as a rainbow effect or something close.
I've been using it for weeks now with no lifting with a Tudia case.
Some people say they pop off. That has not been my experience. YMMV

I also use this one. I have actually already gone through 5 of them... It seems like some of them are more sticky than others maybe. Initially I used them without out a case and they would come off all the time, but since I've had the Tudia case 1 fell off and the new one has been on there 3 weeks.
My opinion is they are hit or miss... just hope 1 of 3 is good.

My guess is that these don't stick to the edges as well, but they are black, so you can't see it, therefor they peel off

That is correct, but I have tried a couple of other brands as well and they are all like that. I only continue to buy these because there come as a 3 pack and are like $10.

What I don't understand is why they are having such an issue with it, I had the LG V20 and it has curved edges, but they make them for it with no issues

Manufacturers not that bright?
I use incipio, be careful, the installation instructions are very tricky, I messed up mine while installing, lost 40$
I'm waiting to see if they will send me a new one
So is the Incipio screen protector any good? I don't even care that it's $40, if it sticks down properly without the bubble around the edges I'll buy it.
I am also interested in finding a better screen protector. I have been using the IQ Shield LiQuidSkin, which worked great for a few weeks, but now a corner is peeling up, I assume from pulling it in and out of my pocket. I might go ahead and get another one if I can't find anything better. Would love a tempered glass protector if someone actually makes a decent one!

Bought a 3 pack of the ozeros on Amazon. 1st on sucked. 2nd one I put on a few weeks later has been perfect. No rainbow of adhesion issues. Use a clear tpu case with it as well.

Where did you purchase? I'm not even seeing it for the Essential PH-1 on the official website....Nevermind, had to do a manual search for our model.
I've tried multiple brands including whitestone and for cost, ease of install, and coverage the Ringke Dual Easy Film is hands down the best.
It isn't tempered glass but it doesn't have the stickiness like other brands. It feels completely smooth and my pen glides across it just like glass. Also, I haven't had any edge lifting and install was a piece of cake.
At the price for 2 I would have paid double if I knew it was this good.
Here's a video on the install and how it looks at the end. You'll note a very minor bubble on the bottom corner but it disappeared after about 10 minutes after I pushed it down a few more times.
I agree. I had previously touted the QiMai TPU screen protector as the best, but I accidentally tore that. Decided to try the Ringke Dual Easy Film. It's basically the same exact screen protector, but the Ringke is an easier install method.
I will concur with this. Install was super easy and clean. I usually go with Armorsuit if I can't find a TGSP that fits my phone perfectly. I took a chance on this and so glad i did. Highly recommended.
Got the phone after Black Friday, put LK tempered and it separated from the screen second day, plus sensitivity went to drain.
Ordered Shilling 3D and after 4 weeks on - no issues, no need to inrease touch sensitivity, in a combo with Spigen Rugged Armor - charm. Haven't droped it yet, can't comment on how well both of them protect the phone, hope it never happens
Reading the opinions here i just applied Ringke easy dual film.
Easy installation, all good.
The only disadvantage is that it's not so antifingerprint.
But recommended...

It gets indentations and is always greasy. Plus it's too big and my regular case pushes up the edges.
I'm very tempted to just not use screen protectors anymore as I'm really tired of the aggravation they cause

After reading this thread and having a never ending stream of frustrations with Whitestone on my Note 9 I decided to order these and give it a try. My first impression was i really liked it, it installed easily and is cleaner looking than the glass, initially, due to not having a mountain of dirt dust and fuzz collecting around the edges. It is 100 % a grease magnet though. It's so prone to smudges I'm pretty sure I'm noticing it pull grease from the air without even touching it. Anyone reading this thread wondering if it's really as bad as some of us have mentioned; it's worse. I cannot overstate how smudgy this product is.
So weigh the pros on cons. Smudges vs dust mountains around the edge of the Whitestone. Which will trigger your fragile OCD less. My own fragile OCD is still undecided.
The edges lifting is definitely an issue I wasn't expecting. This thing has great coverage. Way better than glass. This is a plus and a minus. I've used it with 3 cases now; Spigen Liquid Air; Ringke Air Clear and Rhinoshield Bumper. After a night out at dinner I came home with the Spigen Liquid Air having pushed the corners up a bit on the bottom. I got this screen on pretty squarely, there's not a lot of imbalance between the top and bottom edges. Less than .020" give or take measuring with my eye-lazers. The Ringke air has less aggressive edging around the case and is perhaps a bit softer too along the ridge where the case might meet the screen protector. Perfect fit. The Rhinoshield bumper looks like it's VERY close and for the few hours I used it with this screen protector it did not lift any edge. I think it might after some extended use though.
I also feel like I'm at the point where I might just say F-it to using a screen protector. My pockets are dusty as hell though, and I know it's a bad idea that I'll later regret. Where the heck is all this dust in my pockets coming from anyways? I also feel like I could get used to using this screen protector on my phone with just a skin on the back and go case-less, a tempting notion but also probably a bad idea.
Overall I do like this screen protector. It doesn't feel as nice as Whitestone but it's way more clean (assuming you don't ever touch your phone) and easier to clean when it does get dirty. They could probably make it better by increasing the radius of the corners by just a bit and really increase case compatibility. I'm going to try and live with it a bit and see how I feel after a week or so.

My V20 is 2 years old and never had a screen protector. It always lived in my pockets and has fallen in crevices in the car where I had to pull it out, likely roughing up the screen.
The outcome? Micro scratches you can see with the screen off under light. Never noticeable in day to day use.
My thought process is I own the phone to enjoy not keep pristine for the next owner. With the deals I find, 2-3 years of usage is perfect for me.

My enjoyment is derived through the process of keeping the device as fresh and new as long as possible. I can't deal with the micro scratches or worn out anodizing or any of it.

Well I am glad we all have options then. To me that sounds like keeping your car in perfect condition for the next person. Sure I am going to look after my stuff (I have never shattered a screen or broke any of my phones for that matter), but I am not going to worry about micro scratches that you will never seen day to day and have to use a light and look for it with the screen off. You interact with the screen each time you use the phone, I much rather have perfect response and beautiful glass feel than worry about scratches I will never see. I guess I am taking a risk that the screen durability is as good or better than my V20, I think it should be as scratch resistant or even more

This is a good point. My old phone was the V20 and as it aged I was alittle less careful with it, that thing has a reputation for being rugged. With that said I was pleasantly surprised when I looked at drop tests on this phone. I will be careful and take precautions that seem necessary to me (have a slim to medium sized case).

Oh boy if I'm being particular over my phone you should see my truck!!!
Just applied this screen protector. So far very good. For me it is better than all I tried so far, including: whitestone dome glass (gets "spiderwebs" over time , skinomi techskin (horrible orange peel) and gadgetshieldz (spen stickiness).

Your last paragraph, hit the spot. I was like this with my vehicle, seat covers, expensive paint protection film etc.. one day I realized it was all for the benefit of the next owner LOL.

Gel screen protectors are always going to be greasy as ****, that's my main complain on the Spigen protector I have currently applied on my Note 9.
Also, another downfall of this type of screen protectors is the fact that, they get identations if you, for instance, press your nail against it, your spen, or any other "hard" object. They sort of self heal so this effect goes away after a while.
If you loo closely, you'll notice an orange peel effect as well, the protector isn't 100% smooth as glass.
All in all, all screen protectors will have their pros and cons and to me, Samsung should just drop the ****ing curved screens idea, it's awful and brings close to none advantages.
I will certainly not drop 50€ on a godamn screen protector, might as well buy insurance and have the glass replaced when something bad happens or when I'm about to sell the phone.

Any advantage for this protector vs the OP described protector?
I bought the Ringke one. Currently hesitant to apply it. I'm good at applying wet applied films. Hence the hesitation.
