[Q] Activate radio FM SM-G900F - Sprint Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello everyone, I'm new in the forum ... I have a European version of the galaxy s5 SM-G900F and I know for a fact that even in this version is the chip of the FM radio receiver more precisely BROADCOM BCM-4354 ... unfortunately samsung in our version has disabled!
Does anybody know if you can activate it via driver and apk of your model, as you are active ??
Thanks in advance and sorry but I have translated from Italian into English with Google Translate

If you try using the NextRadio app, with headphones plugged in, what happens? Any error messages?

it seems that lack of drivers / libraries to enable the fm chip that is in every s5 ... for some absurd reason, Samsung has left enabled only in the Sprint variant, but the hardware is the same for all!

Try installing ANT- it may have the the radio driver module. If that's all your device is missing. If not you can isolate which module is loaded for Sprint that isn't on other variants. Look for dumps of dmesg for stock Sprint G5's and compare to whatever variant you have and try to figure out what it is and hope it isn't built into the Sprint G5 Kernel. This stuff is ***SUPPOSED*** to be open source but good luck finding some kernel source to compile. You may be able to ask a ROM dev about it. Maybe look for a ROM that has some special feature using the FM radio highlighted and ask them how the device is initialized.
The variants have the chip but it may be physically disabled. If that's the case then you'd risk turning your phone into parts trying to re-enable it. Good luck.

Any update on this?

Really would love to see this feature back
Happy to help in any way I can

Downloads of this app are disabled for my region (Australia) and using a VPN (based in America) didn't help. Any (safe) source of an apk for this around?

I doubt it's physically disabled, since it's all on the same chip, and that's an extra manufacturing step. At least I am optimistic that this is the case. Any chance the drivers for the chip (which is pretty common, after all) can be nabbed from another phone?

FM Radio

I was wondering if there is an apk for FM Radio to install on my Nexus S?

nope, and i havent yet heard of anyone working on one.
apk should extract the galaxy s works, and adapt to our ... I am sure that there is a chip for fm radio, only that they have not activated ...
I speak little English, why do not we ask in the forum of nexus one for developers who have created the applicazioneper fm radio??
would be perfect

I dont think it would be hard to port, the SGS phones use the same broadcomm chip for wifi, blutooth and FM so porting it over along with part of the touchwiz framework shouldnt be all that hard, but what do i know, im not really a dev
I think we need a hardware driver along with an apk. Did the devs who brought it to the N1 have to write a driver as well?

USB Fast Charge

Hello all,
I'm developing an industrial application using the Galaxy Camera: basically, the camera is connected to a PC through an USB cable, and is used as a remotely controlled picture camera.
What I have to do is control the camera from the PC, play live preview on the PC and take pictures.
I developed a server application on the camera side which communicates, through several sockets and ports with the PC over the USB, with the help of the ADB program.
On the PC side a C# client plays the live preview, control the camera and takes the nedeed pictures.
Using Android APIs and camera parameters I'm able to control everything I need on the camera.
However, I'm facing a big problem now: while the camera is running, connected to the PC and streaming live preview to it, the camera power consumption is so high I cannot hold the battery charger (the conversion process from raw preview to Jpeg -YuvImage.CompressToJpg- is really CPU loading, and the USB current is too low); so, every time, after few hours, I end up with a discharged battery.
This is not acceptable, cause my customers will use the camera for continuous working flow, even for several days.
The problem is that when the Camera is connected to an USB plug the charging current is automatically limited, to avoid to overload the computer USB port.
There's a way to force the charging process to use high current even with an USB connection to a PC (simulating AC charge), but doing so USB communication will be lost, interrupting the communication between the camera and the PC.
In other word, if you want a USB connection to a PC, you'll have a low charging current; if you want an high charging current, you loose the USB connectivity!
This is not an hardware problem, but a Kernel limitation (as far as I've understood).
So, my question is: would it be possible to modify the Kernel in manner to add the possibility to charge the camera as fast as wee can (AC charge), while mantaining USB communication?
How? Where?
I read many and many post on various forums, but I didn't undertand it could be done or not, and how.
I'm running Android 4.1.2, Kernel version 3.0.31 - 751817 (if this could be useful).
Please help me!
Thank you in advance.
Regards,
Giovanni
I think this can be changed in the Kernel settings.

It requires changes to the kernel to support the setting, but if going to the SIII forum, asking a developer how to add it, getting the source, adding it in, and compiling makes more sense than checking out our own kernel thread and just saying "can that be next?", then by all means...

Thank you for your answer, but, due to the fact English is not my native language, your statement is not completely clear to me.
Are you suggesting me to log into the Galaxy Camera Kernel thread (where is it? I can't find it) and ask for a new feature?
Is there any programmer that is working on the Kernel?
Please address me to any useful link, please.

Most of that was not directed at you. I didn't see a purpose in sending someone to the SIII when we do have a custom kernel here. I will be adding fast charge to it shortly.

Here you are the Adam Kernel sources (for GT-I9300), wich has usb fast charge feature. You can build your kernel simply merging the right code from this source to your own galaxy camera source, since the two devices have the same chipset.

Correct me if I'm wrong
I think I see why this forum saw so little traffic before. Each thread is an island, forced to fend for itself with only the SIII to assist it.

A commit, a comment, a function with a name that indicates that is what it does.
From everything i've seen the fast charge patch was only made for msm and omap kernels. This one may require going about it differently.

It's possible to make it work if there is a connection between chip and headphone jack. (For antenna)
I talked to the developer of SPIRIT FM and he told me this
Code:
Thanks for the log.
It looks like it has a Qualcomm FM/BT/WiFi combo chip.
But the kernel does not have the needed Qualcomm "IRIS" V4L FM driver at /dev/radio0.
Disabling the kernel driver is pretty unusual; even Google Nexus devices don't do that, despite that their FM antenna pins are hardware disabled.
A kernel that supports the FM V4L driver is needed to test any further.
Let's see
The easiest thing I have found which I listen to local channels is I-heart radio. I've had many phones in the past that had FM but never used it because I get what I want from I-heart radio and I use Bluetooth headset with mine.

I-Heart Radio is good but it uses bandwidth not all local radio stations are available.
Interesting, I'd love to see if having this included in a custom kernel will make an FM tuner app work..

Well if you can zoom in the picture and look on chip itself it clearly shows as WCN3680. And as per BT 4.1 its just a patch it can applied to most or all 4.0 devices.
I've asked Franco to look into it as well here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-one/orig-development/kernel-franco-kernel-r1-t2800871

Why almost all the customize ROMs do not include FM radio function?
FM radio is not important, but useful and happy with that.

Thought I was being stupid when I couldn't get the radio to work on my h955 but it seemed that lg had not provided an app nor the capability. Radio update now available from lg. Tried it and it works very well. Not sure if everyone else knew about it or if peeps were waiting without knowing so I'm letting you all know.

Are you joking or what? Just look at Settings / General / About phone / Update Center / App Updates. There are 14 LG apps, FM Radio 4.40.14 is among them.
No not joking. When I first got my flex 2 the radio wouldn't work. I tried and tried but to no avail. I may not be able to write in programming language but I'm certainly not a dumbass as your tone denoted. I've been rooting and modding ever since I had my lg 2x (p990). The update is exactly where you said. Maybe it was firmware specific but I don't think I was the only one who had this problem and thought it would be nice to let others know. Anyways. . . . . no luck with bootloader still everyone or is flex 2 considered a dead horse?

Was your Flex in original factory condition at the same time?
Was your box sealed?
Or it was second hand phone tampered by previous owner?
(*) Wait, I take a look into LG-H955_GBR_UG_Web_V1.0_150319-1.pdf users guide and have found this: "FM radio - NOTE: This application may not be available depending on the region or service provider."
But in such situation I would expect that FM Radio will be missing in Settings / General / About phone / Update Center / App Updates too, in other words - forever.

I am sorry, but that's purely your interpretation, I don't want to say this. I was only really surprised how someone can say "but it seemed that lg had not provided an app nor the capability". That is like missing for example Camera apps or Camera capability which is mentioned too in phone specifications. But now I know that even this is possible in some regions by some service providers, see (*).

Mine was second hand but I factory reset it before I used it properly. When I tried to use the lg radio app which was already on the phone it wouldn't work. I deleted and reinstalled it but it still didn't work. I searched online to see if anyone else had a similar problem and some people stated that they couldn't use their radios either. I looked in the manual and found the same as you did that lg may not necessarily switch it on in some regions. I checked some 3rd party apps but no luck. Nothing would work so I assumed maybe mine was switched off and just listened to mp3 ect instead. Then an lg notification took me to update something else the other day and whilst doing so I spotted the radio app. As soon as I opened it I could tell that it was different from before ( an updated version I assumed ) and it worked awesome. I thought others should know. You're right, I should have said where I found it properly in my op sorry.

If I had a clue I would, but I don't
I suspect if you don't have the FM radio, the relevant hardware is not included although this is just a guess.
I have the ls996 and it does have an fm radio.
ls996 users have to use a third party fm radio app to use the hardware ( I verified this through the use of the NextRadio app )
though I can make use of the hardware by other means, I'm the type of person that likes to have something official from lg to tinker around with.
I run radio on LS996? No full-time program, which put the program to work FM radio?

Is it possible to have real live FM radio?

Hi there!
I have a rooted Galaxy S6, model SM-G920W8 and after a few research I found that there's not a lot of applications for real live FM .
Next Radio doesn't support my model.
And for Spirit radio, I have this message : ERROR: Tuner API did not start or stop. This device may need a kernel with a working FM driver.
So, I' m willing to do what it takes to have it even if I needs to downgrade to another rom that contains live FM radio.
Thanks in advance.

In fact I beleive that all chinese version of every phone have the FM chip unlocked.
