Few Tweaks - ONE Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

DETAILS;
Mahdi ROM release 9/03, twrp, bacon latest AK Kernel
Okay after a week of headache's here and there, it seems im never satisfied with this stupid but godly phone.
I have a few things left to do;
1. Manually enable Disable HW overlays; This setting resets everytime i reboot; Can someone post what to use and what to edit in the build.prop file so this stays the same.
2. Im resetting synapse and starting with the default settings in AK's kernel. - I need 2 setups or just 1 that can be used for performance and great battery life. essentially i want my phone to use power only when needed, i will play with MAX and MIN cpu frequency as needed, but the other settings i have no clue what to set. I want to phone to react quick, playing games etc.
3. Can you guys list any main or important tweaks/settings i should use, very new to intelli/hotplug/mpdecision/autosmp dont really know what they do.
4. "Trust me and back up that imei folder.. The important thing is that your phone works, no headaches and now that the hard part is over, you can flash as you'd like, but I would still suggest using those apps and now that you're rooted, titanium backup.. and make a nandroid before you attempt any new flashes.. " an XDA member suggest i do a IMEI folder backup, this is just a copy paste ? If so where is this located ?

Update to latest mahdi rom and you won't need to disable hw overlays

New G2X Checklist

Anyone able to give me some helpful todo's for my new G2X before I do anything with it? Some of these will not be G2X specific obviously. Anything that doesn't involve rooting would be nice. I'll root later on.
I've been told to let the battery die all the way down before charging it at all. Is there any truth in that?
Should I install any sort of battery metering software, or anything else of that sort?
I don't think it's necessary to initially drain the battery all the way down. For the first 5 charges, I fill it all the way up and drain it all the way down to calibrate the reading, despite the faulty LGE battery drivers. I also try to do this with the phone off.
After that I charge it normally whenever I need to.
I personally don't care for any battery-related apps, but I know a lot of people do.
you don't ever need to drain the battery all the way to calibrate it. just root and download BatteryCalibration from the market. it deletes the battery stats and thus insures the phone is reads the battery level accurately. the same can be done in clockworkrecovery
What other things would you guys be doing to prep a new phone?
Do you use any particular tools to do a full stock backup, etc? Pretend you are just cracking the box open and what to start off right.
when I get a new phone I...
-root
-flash clockworkrecoverymod from the dev section
-create a backup in clockwork
-delete battery stats in clockwork (assuming u charges to 100% first)
-install titanium backup pro
-freeze or delete any unwanted apps and services
-restore apps from previous phone (but never any system apps)
-use rom manager to fix permissions
-boot into clockwork again and make another backup
-use any file manager or rom manager to rename your backups however you see fit. I name the first one "factory backup" and the other "stock completely setup"
- use phone
well first thing i would do is put clock work mod on it using nvflash ( the newer version of cwm) then after thats on i would boot into that scroll down to backup and restore and backup my stock rom, now i have a backup of my stock rom, dont use rom manager that would be fake flashing it another words if u get into a sticky situation and are bootlooping u cant do **** about it, thats why u flash cwm with nvflash that way incase that happens u can hold power down and vol down and get into recovery......ok after installing recovery and making my stock backup i then would use super one click and root it and put pauls fix on it (paul obriens) hot fix, makes the phone faster and is stable, lg ****ed up somehow with boot up and he fixed it....ok so after that i would make one more backup of my rooted stock rom, now u have a backup of a pure stock rom and a backup of a rooted stock rom, now this way incase u needed to take the phone back to tmobile u would restore ur pure stock rom and all u would have to do was run nvflash and flash stock recovery and ur good. now the reason for the rooted stock backup is if u just wanna go back to stock for whatever reason, u wouldnt have to root it, it would already be rooted......that being said u have ur backups u have recovery and rooted now i would go explore with some roms and see which one is for u then when u find one u like stick with that then flash a custom kernel and so on and so on....sorry for the long post
and yes before u make any backups install titanium backup and backup all the apps u want this way if u install a new rom u can restore ur apps that u want on that new rom
Awesome post.

Well you should be at full charge when you wipe the stats... or how else will the phone know that the battery is at 60% = 60% not 60% = 40%. Start at 100%, wipe stats, then do a full drain until the dies. This will write stats of the true length of the battery.
I don't really think wiping the battery stats is even required but I would give it a few good full charge/drain cycles to tell the phone the full length of the battery; this is important for any device.
When I first got my phone, download root app+drivers, root, NVFlash ClockworkMod Recovery, BACKUP, full charge + battery wipe, cache wipe, flash, enjoy.
Or just enjoy Stock for a while. It is a new device and Stock works pretty well (at least it did for me). I like staying stock on a new device for a while so I know what to expect out of custom roms.
So I only have the internal memory at this point. Once I use CWM to perform the backup, should I grab the backup file(s) off of my device and archive them on my computer just in case something goes awry?
well of course you need to charge to 100% first. the whole reason the app and option in clockwork exists is because draining lithium ion batteries is unhealthy for battery. if you charge to100% and delete the stats it will read the battery correctly. I'm not saying a drain doesn't achieve the same result but as I said it is unhealthy for the battery.

I would install Clockwork and then Gunnman's stock+rooted rom
Put on diet using System App remover or Titanium backup to freeze
cache cleaner NG (clean files)
flash Faux123 Stock Kernel .03 using Kernel Manager Pro
pimpmy cpu to OC to 1.4ghz
VM heapsize app to change heapsize to 48 (helps with graphics)
SD speed increase app (allows SD to read/write faster)
Paul's deox fix (its a little further down the pages in development section, it provides a froyo fix to make app listing and etc run smoother and faster)
Optimus 2x LED notfication (makes our hardware buttons flash when we get sms, mms, etc)
Systcl Config app (follow these settings)
min free kbytes: 32568
dirty ratio: 5
dirty background ratio: 3
vfs cache pressure: 0
Oom allocating task: Enabled
Run Titanium Backup and clear out Dalvik files.
Use ADW EX and put on fast settings
Use spare parts app to turn off all transition or windows animation.
Note: Anim mod app can add different menu animations. I use this only because it gives a cool flip animation to the top task bar. Even if all animations are turned off.
I'm sure there are other ways about this but this is the easiest way to do things with apps instead of trying to use a terminal and etc.
Recommendation: Root tools has some good stuff but do not run fix permissions cuz it could lead to breaking your root. This kept happening to me when i used superone click and did that lol

[Q] [q] actually some rom questions

ok so im a n00b- plz don't be mad at me... and to the point,
recently i upgraded my device with odin to gb 2.3.4
and some questions have popped out:
1. why did my data connection button dissapread in the power menu?
2. how do i change my battery indicator icon to actually see the precentage number i have?
3. can i backup settings ?
4. how can i remove some apps that came with the GB such as the music player/ tmobile sync app/ drivesmart etc.. (i have rooted)
5. ive seen this rom called icbinb and wondering what's the advatages it has, anyway couldn't understand how to install it,
what is voodoo that i should disable ? is there a guide for me ? (i was looking at the guides and couldnt find one that i could understand)
Voodoo is a lagfix thing.. Gets rid of all lag but gb already does that kinda. The mobile data was for froyo only.unless one of the devs put it on for you!
ICBINB is the tweaked version where its a bit smoother! You can also go to the themes and apps forum part and there should be a lil thread there.

Backup the settings but only advanced restore the data and you can remove apps with titanium backup or root explorer

To remove apps you don't want, AKA bloatware, I use "titanium backup" you can get it in the market. I suggest you back up everything first then start removing apps one by one, some apps your phone needs to function properly. Actually the paid version offers a "freeze" feature so you can test which apps you can remove safely first. Hope this helped a little

1. because its just not on the power menu in gb
2. try uot kitchen
3. dont really know
4. Use root explorer, go into /system/app/ find app you want to delete and delete it (titanium backup doesnt work that well for me so this is a sure fire way)
5. just all around smoother

1) I think that's only for Froyo. Nobody did that for GB yet, I believe.
2) Use UOT Kitchen. It's kinda confusing for me, so I never bothered trying...
3) Backup what settings? Your phone settings or your launcher settings? For your phone settings and launcher settings, you can do a backup in CWM. However, you can't do a full backup, because the system can't mount properly. There was someone who mentioned you can flash the Bali 3.3 kernel to create a backup, but I never tried it myself. If you only want to backup launcher settings, most of them have a backup and restore option. Keep in mind that you cannot perform an advanced restore of data from a Froyo ROM onto a GB ROM.
4) Use Titanium Backup to backup, remove, and restore apps.
5) ICBINB is pretty much the smoothest a ROM can get. It's got all the known tweaks built into the ROM, so you just flash and go. Voodoo is a lagfix that speeds up your phone by converting your /system, /data, and /cache to an ext4 file system (the regular is rfs). Having Voodoo fully enabled will make your ROM very fast and smooth. However, there are problems with getting Voodoo to work on GB ROMs, but there are fixes for it. You can search around the forum for that.

Few questions after root=)

Nandroid:
i am new in using nandroid backup and i have few questions about it.
1st, what is the "boot" it backup? isit the rom or what? if i restore nandroid after flashing a new rom, will the old rom comes back again?
2nd, does it even backup the theme? if i factory reset because of installed a wrong theme, if i restore my nandroid, will the wrong theme comes back again?
3rd, how about the system errors? will it also backup them?
Overclock in tiamat rom 2.2:
Whats the different in overclocking with the settings inside tiamat and with setcpu? Normally i use setcpu but i found it drain more battery .. if i overclock with the tiamat settings, will the setting included when the screen is off? bcause normally i set low frequency during screen off with setcpu to save some juice
Lastly, can someone explaine the option "disabling logcat" to me? Any benefits or risk if diaable that?
sry for my noob english.. thx to anyone who answer me =)
Nandroid, which is what is most commonly referred to, is the process of backing up the current system and data which involved with said system (which includes your system, recovery, boot, data, etc.). That said, restoring a full backup in like re-installing your old ROM with all the apps and what not you originally had installed at the time of the backup including any user data.
What does this mean? Lets say you're going to install a new ROM, you make a backup of your current ROM, then you did your wipe (factory reset) and installed the new ROM. You find yourself having issues with the new ROM, you can simply restore the backup and it'll revert you back to your old ROM with your old information in tact.
Now, say, there's an issue in the said ROM and you make a backup of said ROM the flash a new ROM or something and you decide to revert back by restoring it, then yes, the error will come back.
In terms of the overclocking, the kernel needs to first support being able to overclocked first. That's where the Tiamat ROM/Kernel comes in since it supports it. SetCPU looks at what the kernel can support and let you set it that way, what the Tiamat creators did is allowed you direct access to overclock it if you wish without the need of using another app but you are free to do so (just don't touch any of the overclock settings in the Tiamat's settings).
And logcat is a log file that pretty much shows the activity of your device and useful for debugging issues. You can safely turn it off is you please like it.
In simple terms nandroid backup is like backup of windows where system image is created and restore the system to state where it was when backup was created.
it will put your system in same state where it was when you created a backup.
BTW:The post above me came from Mars
tq very much =)
If i disable the logcat will it affect my usb debugging thing? If enable will it drains battery or memory space?

no usb debugging will not be disabled.
i use usb debugging mode only when i am using adb(for root/unlocking,etc.)
sometimes when xoom is not shown under "My Computer" then i check usb debugging and it shows.
dunno any relation with battery.
Disabling the logcat doesn't disable USB Debug Mode.
I keep debugging mode on my XOOM since I use mainly ADB for everything anyways, doesn't hurt the battery one bit.

How to restore using Titanium Backup

I had recently rooted my phone and had installed Titanium backup using which I backed up all the apps+data.
Using Titanium backup I tried to remove a stock app provided by lg. During this process the phone rebooted twice and after that I saw that the phone had been reset to the factory settings.
I restored by following the below steps
Titanium backup > Backup/Restore > menu > batch > Restore > run Restore missing apps + all system data.
After restoring I observe that the phone is not being able to connect to any wifi, however previously when it was in factory reset it was being able to connect to wifi. Could anyone please help.

I think it was one of "Dhingana", "Bollywoodji" or "AG indian newspapers". I had restored after that but currently I do not find "Dhingana" among the installed apps.
It would be the best of you would factory reset again. If you have a custom recovery, then reboot into it(either from ROM Manager or with phone off holding Volume Down+Home+Power) and wipe data, cache etc. If you haven't got a custom recovery, then power your phone off and use the key combination above. It should work.
And don't use "restore system data" option in Titanium. Better restore individual apps in the "Backup/Restore" without going into the Batch mode.

Which setting/file are the system settings saved in? Things like the nav bar, notification bar, display, account syns, etc....? I know all about the pitfalls of restoring system data across different ROMs and for those cases, I just bite the bullet and redo all of those settings. But it seriously takes an hour or two to go in and redo all of those settings and if a RM is getting updated every couple of weeks, this just gets way too tedious for it to be worth it.
I know I can just do a system data + app and data restore for those cases and I do use that but there are times when I do not want every single thing restored and it would be nice to know which file all of those settings are saved in. I tried tinkering with just a few of those but I could not seem to find it.
Thank you in advance for any help, much appreciated.
And/or which file(s) cause the android.process.media to stop working and in general causes apps to crash? Also, does the Android ID cause/affect that? Thanks again.
[Edit] After much trial and error, I found the cause of the android.media.process and all apps in general crashing as a result problem(s). It was the file(s) Download Manager eng.prbassplayer and/or Downloads eng.prbassplayer inside Titanium Backup - Restore System Data selections. Just fyi for those wanting to know. I restored all other system and app data besides those and had no problems whatsoever with all Interface settings restored. I still did not figure out which file restored the Interface settings, if anyone could still shed some light on that.
This post relates to custom ROMs and restoring stuff with TB. Hoping someone can help.
I have been playing with Resurrection Remix for the last 7 months and have recently switched to Vanilla Rootbox.
With these two ROM's (and probably others) when an update is released a wipe/factory reset is required before installing the update. This causes a great amount of inconvenience as I have to manually re-setup all my shortcuts/widgets, email accounts, custom settings such as custom settings (toggles, etc...) ringtones and notifications sounds and so on.
All this takes ages and I'm getting a little tired of having to do it. There must be an easier way? Can this sort of stuff be restored with TB? I could be wrong but I don't think it can.
Many thanks.

try to save them in TB, if you can find in TB and save them it will be restored to any rom you will use in future
I was under the impression that those settings caused problems if formats were needed and especially between different ROM's?
And yeah, tmarinos I definitely her you there. I have stopped using those extra customizations for my ROM, though I can usually restore my home screen and app drawer settings safely, thankfully.
The developers of my ROM (Slim Bean) have started that they want to include a feature to restores those settings between resets, so hopefully that type of feature becomes more integrated as time goes on. Hopefully.
On another note, my phone's TB is having issues. When it runs an automated scheduled backup task, it keeps saying "insufficient storage" but if I manually run that exact same task it runs just fine. Anyone have any idea what that's about?

[Q] 1st time root/rom question -hyperdrive rls15 GS3

Hello all:
This is my first foray into rooting/roming and I am liking it so far.
But now I have a few questions
here are my specs:
Verizon Galaxy S III
Hyperdrive RLS15
TWRP
Titanium backup
busyBox - not sure what this does
So, here are my questions
1)
This whole rom /modding thing is fun as s#!+.
I want to try other ROMs. Is there a way to install a different ROM without having to re-install all of my third party apps all over again?
2)
I like the Hyperdrive ROM but I would like to add and remove some of the features I installed when I loaded the ROM initially.
Is there a way to change my configuration without having to start from the beginning and having to re-install 3rd party apps?
3)
Apparently this ROM has a battery calibrator built in that I can run in terminal.
Can anyone tell me what it actually does
4)
What is BusyBox and why do I need it?
Thanks in advance for all your help and all the work this community does

1. Basically no, the fastest and easiest way to get your apps back is using titanium backup. It's even recommended to not even restore with tb if you switch from touchwiz and AOSP or vise versa.
2. Hyperdrive uses aroma and this is true for any rom running aroma, but to change your features you simply have to reflash the rom. Then while you're in aroma, simply deselect all the features you don't want anymore, but if you forget to mark something you already had it'll go away.
3. Can't help you with this one, try searching the development thread.
4. Busybox is basically a terminal (if you can call it that?) that runs with Linux. It basically gives your phone the ability to run a vast majority of basic commands that would otherwise have to be manually entered into a terminal. It's a stripped down version of a full Linux kit, so it's designed for more stripped down environments such as mobile and tablet devices.

So, do you mean to say that I can back-up and restore only my apps when I either change roms or re-install the current rom?
But if I switch from a TW rom to an AOSP rom then restoring those apps via TB is NOT reccommended?

And thanks so much for your reply

I think titanium is great for backing up apps, and yes, if I'm switching between touchwiz roms or the same rom I'll use titanium to restore user apps with data. But if I went to an AOSP rom I'd only restore the app itself mainly because of the different android versions, most apps such as games should run normally, but restoring data will sometimes cause issues with a rom. You'd have to do a lot of battery stats hunting to get rid of some of them. If you didn't restore data, your system would be pretty clean, and new data would be written for the apps you use as you use them instead of restoring them from a different version.
I would never in any case restore system data, unless I'm reinstalling a clean flash of the same exact rom and build I was on.

If you dirty flash without a factory reset your data will stay intact even after a reflash.
Stuff that's included in system data are contacts, text messages, call logs, etc. I usually never restore that stuff, and just let Google restore my contacts from the cloud.
It generally isn't a good idea, but it shouldn't be a problem going into the same rom. It's up to you whether to do it or not.

you can restore apps coming from AOSP to TW or vice versa. Ive never had a problem anyway when i used to flip flop back and forth.
I always select user apps and not system apps though.
You can use sms backup and call log backup to restore messages and call logs. theyre great apps.
thanks
thanks everyone for all the advice and tips.

Hi -this is actually in response to a comment on another thread, but I wanted to be sure to reach you and figured if I commented on a thread you initiated you'd get a notification. I just got the S5 mini and it's driving me nuts - I primarily use it to listen to music and it skips/stops the song if I so much as breathe. I cant use it for jogging or even listening while walking, which means it's useless to me. Did you ever find a solution to the sensitivity factor - screen protector, case, etc.........? I may just return it. Even if I twist my hand the tiniest amount it happens, and it doesn't just skip - it turns the song or even the page off completely. I literally haven't been able to listen to one single song all the way through since I got it - even when it is laying down flat. Help!
hey:
weird way to contact me, but it worked.
i never did figure it out. i didn't try a screen protector either, i just hate them.
i just end up being annoyed at the thing.
I hang-up on people with my cheek, i inadvertently open or close apps. i am constantly opening the recent app menu (though i finally found a way to re=map that damn key)... so basically i'm stil unhappy, but i have a year till my contract expires so i'm living with it.
as an aside I somehow changed a setting, disabled my wi-fi, then lost root and can't seem to re-root or enable the wi-fi
