Is there a way to make the system think you're using on screen nav buttons without actually using on screen nav buttons. The outcome i I'm looking for is in apps like Google chrome where if you have on screen nav buttons, the app gives you a drop down menu button. When using the hardware nav buttons this option isn't available. It would be nice to be able to use either method.
The feature you seem to be describing is pie controls. It's embedded in certain roms and is available in a app. Do a Google search and you can read more about pie controls.

Enabling a 3 dot menu on apps sounds like what you're asking for.

There has to be a way to hide the status bar. obviously in numerous diff launchers, there is the option to swipe up or down to hide/bring back your noti bar. the noti bar lies within the systemUI.apk (or so i can tell via switching themes). anyone know how to edit the xml that allows for hiding the noti bar? it looks sick when i adb push the systemui.apk and it dissappears. Help!
the statusbar has the home, back, menu keys built in; its probably a bad idea to hide it
I was thinking about this also. It would be nice for apps to go true fullscreen and overlap the status bar. Maybe its an app issue but Remote RDP Lite makes it awkard as when I set the resolution to 1280x800 the bottom part actually gets covered by the status bar.
I suppose I can set it to be like 1280x750 or something...

I'd like the option to hide it whenever.

this would likely require use of a hardware button, since I dont think android CAN support gestures that work over all apps, and I cant think of any other input method you could use
edit: wouldnt be a bad use of the power button since the battery is good enough without it needing to sleep and the lockscreen is sort of pointless because its not in your pocket. Maybe a popup menu on the power button like on phones?
I'd like the ability to move the status bar to the top. This would make it easier to access when I'm holding it with my left hand and resting it on my legs. Right now, if I move my left hand to hit back or home, I then need to grab my xoom with my right hand to keep it steady.
One option would be to use the up down volume keys to move the status bar up or down. Volume could be handled more easily from the notification tray, it isn't as necessary as on a phone to have an alway accessible volume button.
Hi
I just went from Stock 4.0.3 to Team EOS 4.2.1. Everything seems to work, but Im missing the "lock navigation bar" feature.
I know it's a ASUS specific feature. It says ASUS "something" setting
Fore those not familiar with this feature: You get a new button on the navigation bar. swipe it - and it lock the navigation bar, so you dont accidental push any of the buttons while e.g playing games or watching movies. Swipe it again and it unlocks the bar.
It is a big problem for kids not to hit e.g. home or back buttons while playing.
Are there any apps, hidden settings or custom roms that makes this possible
/jk
U can hide the nav bar on this awesome ROM
Long press the power button and press the last option... Better then lock

Thanks mate
Yes that is a better solution, I agree.
I did rummage around the settings. found a lot of settings related to nav/status bar, but never quite what I was after.
Android can be quite difficult because all the feature and setting and that they change from version to version and ROM to ROM.
But its also the freedom we love, i guess
My buddy has the moto turbo, and it has capacitive buttons much like our OPO, but it still has a functional nav-ring. I love using the capacitive buttons, but I miss the ring functionality with the on screen navigation buttons very much. Doors anyone know if this is portable, or any kind of wip?
Cheers, and Merry Christmas!
I'm not sure what you mean by Nav ring, perhaps a screenshot? I'm guessing you're meaning something along the lines of pie controls, there's many custom roms that come with pa pie or slim pie included (in some cases both, eg mahdi). My preference is slimpie but they're both great!

Not talking pie, it's when you swipe up from the nav bar, and you get the ring with Google now by default. Just a handy shortcut. So on the opo, that works with capacitive buttons disabled, but with them enabled, no nav ring.
I'm on a cm12 build, so obviously its in the early stages with most features yet to be implemented, but even on kk ROMs, I haven't seen this mod.
On the droid turbo I believe the home button barely touches the bottom of the screen so the phone is able to follow your finger's trail and detect wether to show the nav ring or not. On the OPO the capacitive button are smaller than the turbo's even though you can't see their borders, so I doubt it would be possible to port this function to the OPO, but I'd be surprised if someone would manage to make it work
I too am looking for an app that allows that function. First time seeing it on the droid turbo and was eagerly looking for it. I don't like how the soft screen buttons takes up a portion of the screen, so I still prefer capacitive buttons.
My closest alternative right now is SideControl by Jawomo. Although it's just slightly less efficient than the Nav Ring, but it works similiarly. Just slide up from the bottom of the screen and it easily opens up a panel with my shortcuts. Works pretty well too.
Hope this helps!
Prefer the navigation buttons but, wish you could hide them all,or,on a per-app basis ? (no such animal on this phone as-is,unlike LG's,one of the nice touches LG pulls off flawlessly)
There's a few apps in the Google Play Store that do just this & no root required.
I'm using this one, but, have used others w/similar results:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=pl.damianpiwowarski.navbarapps
This one I've used as well, works flawlessly:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=jp.sakeapps.immersivesettings
You will need to use ADB to enable the hide function, afterwards, you're good to go.
(each app has its own unique command, but, accomplishes the same thing, see each app for details regarding the exact ADB command).
One MAJOR added benefit:
Before using this app, most apps that were full screen were lopped off at the bottom, just above the radius (on the left or right in landscape, however you use landscape).
Using this app helps to fully hide the quick settings on the bottom of the screen, which I think was the culprit. (You can still swipe up to access quick settings & navigation buttons).
Now,all apps, especially those that we bought this phone for (games/You-Tube & the like),can be fully enjoyed utilizing the entire display.
There's a setting under Settings\System Navigation that'll let you hide all three nav buttons at the bottom of the screen and still function as they should. You can even flip the order of the buttons. You can hide them completely or select small dots to represent them, or you can select small underscore symbols. The left is for Control Center. The center is Home screen. The right is the Back button. You trigger them by swiping up.

Yeah, that's true, but, this method gives you more control on a per app basis, that's the reason I posted this.
VIVO's take on it is a step in the right direction, but, IMHO, as with most of their software choices, is severely flawed, too much iOS inspiration & not enough common sense for a cleaner & functional U/I.

As most new users. I keep hitting the home button. I'm using SwiftKey. I tried the other two keyboard too.
I've tried turning on auto hide nav bar - but the keyboard is the only app that DOESN'T work with it.
I thought I could just disable one click home... No such option.
Installed gravity box - also no option.
Even if i could just move home left or right 1cm of be happy.
Any help you can offer is appreciated.
Edit :spelling
I have this problem too... Caused from writing too fast :laugh:

TBH, I used to be like that too. Had even slaved multiple functions to long presses of the Nav bar buttons. I was a hardcore NavBar-ist
Then I switched to gestures, and after swearing loudly - multiple times + continuously - while acclimatising to the entire idea, now that I'm used to it I really can't think of using any phones with Nav Bars any more.
Plus you get the bonus of NEVER getting NavBar Burn-In.
(And, TBH, I'm actually finding that the OP6 way of doing it a bit more intuitive then the Pie "pill" gestures, but eyyy that's probably just me)
ROOT option
ROOT - exposed - and "Custom Navigation Bar" module. which will let you do what ever the **** you want with navbar, including layout of buttons, and their possition
