[Q] Can I do a /data backup then unlock bootloader? - Moto G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

As the Title states, I'd like to know if I can do a data backup via the stock Android Recovery, since I heard that Unlocking Bootloader would lead to a data erase. So I was wondering if whether I could restore the backup after unlocking bootloader and have my data intact (It ain't my phone)

I'm not sure but you can make a backup and place it on a computer and then unlock the boot loader and restore it when you are done with all the things.

Use carbon/helium.

So I see

A real noob question

I have root and twrp recovery but a locked bootloader. The phone is set up perfect.
Can i do a twrp backup, unlock bootloader, then restore twrp backup, or will the bootloader just be relocked when the backup is restored?
I have tried searching but it seems everyone else unlocks bootloader 1st.
thanks in advance
Bootloader status is independent of those partitions so it doesn't matter. Your bootloader won't get automatically locked/unlocked like this...
But remember that all DRM secured features of Sony are gone if you unlock BL (TA partition gets wiped).

Prevent data wipe on unlock

So i have a nexus 5 with a broken inoperable screen. Mtp mode as well as usb debugging is not enabled. Need the stuff from internal storage. Thinking if i unlock the bootloader in fastboot then immediately reboot to the bootloader after unlocking then using fastboot to boot a custom recovery, i should still have my data. Which i can then backup through nandroid backup or adb. (Since the wipe is done during first os boot, i believe.) Can anyone confirm? I don't wanna unlock then lose my stuff but I'm trying to avoid screen raplacemnt at all costs.
TIA

Backup Image.

Is there an official backup I can make of my current installation without installing custom recovery ?
I want to try out Android P but I don't want to root or do anything with my phone. Not even unlock boot loader before I do backup. Any way to backup phone in my current state and then enable OEM unlock, unlock boot-loader and install custom recovery. Cause I am positive I'll use if for about 20 mins and then go back to my stable 8.1
Catch 22
You'll need to unlock your bootloader which will wipe your data partition so sadly I don't think it's easily possible.
To be able to take backups and restore you will need a custom recovery, be already root and have an unlock bootloader

Lock/Unlock boot loader?

Can we re-lock the boot loader on Pixel devices if the device is rooted and modded with custom boot and recovery partitions? I heard that it will brick the device when you try to re-lock the boot loader.
Also what if recovery partition ever gets corrupted and a user never had enabled OEM unlocking for the boot loader in the developer option as set as default, and the boot loader is locked as is, user can'f flash the factory images and /or full OTA from ADB.
I'm no expert but from what I've read 'Never relock the bootloader unless you are 10000% sure it's full stuck' and if I remember correctly there is no recovery partition on A/B slot builds which is why a brick is a non recoverable scenario (check that out just in case I'm wrong)
I've unlocked my bootloader and it ain't getting relocked after reading through heaps of bricked pixel threads, best to be safe than bricked.
Yep @junglism93 is right, only re-lock bootloader if you are 100% stock and unrooted to avoid bricks. Also Pixel doesn't have a recovery partition, everything happens in the boot partition, that means that in case of problems if you don't want to reflash the whole factory image (which needs unlocked bootloader), you can just reflash boot.img on slot-a and slot-b (which needs unlocked bootloader anyway).
I unlocked my bootloader straight after the unboxing and I can tell it's like a life saviour, if any problem occurs you can always solve it with an unlocked bootloader.

Click to collapse
That seems like a crazy partition scheme on the device. I can't stand that dreaded unlock screen at the startup. plus you never know for sure if that OEM unlock switch in the developer menu will stay enabled all the time and not accidentally get disabled after modding your device so you're just having a very vulnerable device if it is modded...eh?
I wonder if there is a pure Android device which does not have such restrictions and/or actually comes pre-rooted?

Want to make a backup image of phone without root

I have a SM-A530W running Android 9 but is unrooted with a locked bootloader. I want to make as complete backup of the phone as possible, preferably using DD so I get a byte for byte image. Using OEM Unlock will wipe the device, so is there any way to flash a custom recovery or root the phone without wiping it? Or is there a way to get a full image of the device without root? I have full access to the phone with the PIN code and google account password.
