EDIT: We have NAND WRITE ACCESS NOW, NO NEED TO USE THIS ANYMORE! Do the NAND ROOT then Install AdFree from the Market!!!
Sadly we don't have access to write to the NAND on the Evo outside of the recovery console(yet). Some apps such as "AdFree" By BigTinCan do not work for us, as it doesn't have permission for this...
So we must do this manually...
Choose a hosts file!
You need to do is decide where to get your hosts file that will block them. I am attaching the one I am using, but you can find more all over the net
My hosts file (Which is both other options combined)
Another Option
Another option
Once you have one, put it into the tools Android Tools Directory (C:\AndroidSDK\tools for most people).
Copy the Hosts file to the device!
1. ) The phone must be rooted. (Thanks Toast)
2. ) Boot the phone into recovery (Where it says: RECOVERY INSTRUCTIONS).
3. ) Start up ADB Shell
Code:
C:\AndroidSDK\tools>adb shell
4. ) Mount the System Partition
Code:
# mount /dev/block/mtdblock4 /system
5. ) Exit Adb Shell (Press Control+C)
6. ) Push the hosts.txt file to the device.
Code:
C:\AndroidSDK\tools>adb push hosts.txt /system/etc/hosts
7. ) Reboot Device
Code:
C:\AndroidSDK\tools>adb reboot
That's it, not hard at all. Sadly as time goes on, more ads will slip through the cracks, and you have to do this again.
Quick Q&A:
Q: How do I root the phone?
A: Read this thread.
Q: How do I boot into the recovery console?
A: Read this thread.
Q: How do I set up/what is ADB?
A: Read this thread.
Q: Is removing ads wrong?
A: Probably.
Q: What benefits do I get from removing ads?
A: Less distractions, faster load times, more of the actual app/game will be shown.
Q: I still have a question! How do I...?
A: Answer

my point being that
a) i've already posted this up. if tenny had searched, he would have found my thread and would have seen that his was not needed
b) i didn't post it in development, which is designed for kernels, ROMs, radios, etc
honestly, the evo forum is, hands down, the least organized forum that i've seen here at xda. so many people ran out and bought the evo and now come here, just post up without searching, ask the same questions over and over, etc. we end up with 75 threads all saying the same thing. it's ridiculous.

Well depends on what you consider development, some consider any writing to the system partition to be some form of development...
Still though I apologize for posting this after you, I did search but when I originally made this, just I got distracted and didn't submit the thread until later. Don't worry I never saw your thread and did all the research on my own.
But complaining about this thread in the wrong section TWICE does no good... the mods are moving threads and haven't moved this yet... honestly who cares quit *****ing and let's move on.

I do not think so. You need to boot into recovery for anything to stick, so if you can't then no.
hmmm...strange that when I push this hosts.txt file over to /system/etc/hosts, my entire device just hung. I have to revert back to original hosts file.
Any ideas?
I noticed it removed the ads from Jewels but it didn't remove them from chompSMS. Since I use text more than play games, I'd appreciate it if someone figures out how to remove the ads from chompSMS to let me know. O btw, I used the original hosts.txt file the OP uses.
i don't know about chompsms, but if you grab the hosts file from my thread, in q and a, it eliminated the ads from handcent (and everything else i run). the hosts file i posted was updated from adfree 3 days ago.
@vboy, do the push while in recovery mode and with /system mounted for write permissions. there shouldn't be any 'hang' because it's not done while the phone is in android.
Sorry I wanted to edit my post and let you know it works with chomp but as a new user I couldn't. The frame is there, but no more ad! Thanks

I'm pushing it in recovery mode and pushed over to evo as /system/etc/hosts. I think it caused some issue with my phone in routing for hosts. Whenever I start using apps with data, then it's start hanging. I removed and revert back to hosts file and all is good.
Hey guys! It's me again... sorry So, I finally was able to make NoozXoide works with Spotify. It truly improves the sound, even with local files, different from others eq... But no, it's not enough. So, I decided to give up. I need Viper4Android, and only it.
When I was doing some research about sound mods without root, I remember finding an article which described how to install Viper4Android without rooting the device. I remember, though, it was necessairy to change SELinux Policies to permissive. But I can't find this article anywhere... So I figured it out it would be easier to ask you guys here. Also, I need to know if it's working with Android Nougat... I use Moto G4 Plus, just fyi.
Can you please help me?

LITERALLY absolutely will for sure need root access to change anything involving SeLinux to anything other than Enforcing.....
If you want viper4android, you're gonna need to be rooted. I agree about the audio mods though :/ nothing compares.

I've read some things about flashing a Permissive Kernel, whichcould be done without rooting, and would be enough to run V4A... Not sure about the truth on that, though, neither how it could be done...

If you were to flash anything with ANYTHING, you're starting with a custom recovery which for like 60/70% of all devices requires root first......
Example; Terminal input with root
#[email protected] $ su
/
getenforce
SELINUX ENFORCING <<<<<<------- if u are rooted all you need to do is enter
setenforce 0 and it becomes permissive.....
So on every single device I have laying around incapable of root (Trust me I have drawers full of them bro xD) I have given a pretty solid effort of my own to escalate the privlidges one way or another, and legitimately break a root onto it. But I feel like the only thing that COULD work, would be Magisk with Phussions SuperUser for an SE-friendly root. + from what I could tell using it on an s6, it has alot of epic support & love for us who seriously just need v4a
---------- Post added at 12:26 PM ---------- Previous post was at 12:20 PM ----------
You will need root for Magisk though, its kinda @[email protected] with that, but mods and management app setups always are anyway.... I hate when u jst cant get the music to be perfect. No clue where the DSP game is at with pure AOSP so its kinda hard to judge. But v4a makes or breaks a device for me completely.

Below you will find instructions how to root this device.
The following procedure has been tested up to firmware J120AUCU2APJ2
KNOX should remain 0x0
However you undertake this at your own risk.
Issues:
Wifi passwords not remembered (fix below)
Stock Flashlight app not working.
Model number may be missing from build.prop (fix below)
Instructions
1. Flash the eng boot image.
This is a special boot image normally used by engineers, it allows selinux to be booted in permissive mode with relaxed root restrictions.
Do not replace this image with the stock image after rooting your device or you will possibly soft brick your device.
(See below for how to recover)
ENG_BOOT_J120A_PG1
Download Odin v3.11.1
Reboot Phone in Download Mode (press and hold Home + Power + Volume Down buttons)
Connect phone and wait until you get a blue sign in Odin
Download the ENG_BOOT_J120A_PG1.tar to your PC and add it to AP / PDA in ODIN.
Make sure re-partition is NOT ticked
Click the start button, sit back and wait few minutes
2. Install and run Kingroot:
http://www.apkmirror.com/apk/kingro...-release/kingroot-5-0-5-android-apk-download/
You may need to run Kingroot several times to gain successful root.
3. Install and run SuperSU me to remove Kingroot and convert to SuperSU (not required) :
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...ore&pcampaignid=APPU_1_uzPDVbGyFcGNyATHrqmoCA
Alternative (free) method to replace Kingroot:
Follow Steps 3 to 12.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/ga...ide-how-to-root-tripping-knox-kitkat-t3129484
Don't flash the boot partition with Flashfire, uncheck.
You will also need to flash the system version of SuperSU not EverRoot.
When you get to step 12, don't flash the firmware. Disable EverRoot and just flash this:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/apps/supersu/v2-64-2-66-supersu-mode-t3286120
4. Wifi fix:
modify the line below in /system/build.prop:
ro.securestorage.support=true to false
5. To fix “Unauthorized actions have been detected”
disable 'security log agent'
6. Model number missing fix:
http://www.techgainer.com/change-fake-android-device-model-number-and-brand-name/
Enjoy your rooted device
To recover from a soft brick flash the firmware below.

As ashyx mentioned in a previous post, Flashfire works. Loaded Xposed for Samsung via the Wa?? version.
spicybeansandricey, to clarify, Wanam is a modified version of Xposed for Samsung phones. Google is my friend, Google is your friend and Google is our friend. If you Googled it, you will find links to the same/similar packages linked by ashyx to get Xposed on Samsung phones. Since I was skimming the articles and successfully installed on a 4" screen, I wasn't sure about the name but only remembered the first 2 letters. In fact, the tutorial I followed was different from ashyx's post and gave no credit to XDA.
As an addendum, Flashfire works great and was able to back up EFS files. I just chose to backup EVERYTHING since I don't know what I will need later. My 128GB sd card cost more than the phone! LOL As for my vacation reading list and Google, I still have to read up on new superuser and root that can survive OTAs and root detection.

Yeh flash fire is pretty much the next best thing to custom recovery with a few little tricks of its own.
Anyone have a list of garbage that can be safely removed? Even after stripping some of the obvious stuff there's over 4Gb of system stuff.
Can I remove the Samsung stuff like Galaxy Apps and such? I don't want to remove anything that will make it unstable so that I can still reset it back to fresh and begin over, but without the bloat ware of that makes sense?

No matter how much you remove from system the size will never change, it's rather a pointless exercise. All you're doing is creating unused space.

So what's the point of rooting? The primary reason was to remove the bloat and recover some usable space on the device. Out of 8GB there's less than 3gb of usable storage on it rendering it mostly useless for anything but a media player or emulator box loading crap off the SDCard.
What a waste.

Rooting is about more than debloating. It's about having control over your device.
Why don't you use adoptable storage if you need more space?
You can always move user apps to system to take up the space you've created. There are plenty of apps that can do this such as system app remover. That way not only do you utilise that space but you also free up storage space.

Adoptable storage is useless. Most of the apps will not see it and refuse to install data there, making it impossible to install anything large on the device or more than a few small apps/games.
I hadn't considered moving installed apps to system space I will give system app removed a glance. Thx

thats kind of harsh considering i just asked for instructions on how to get xposed on my phone. instead of helping you wanted to put me down for not using the word "brick" in a manner thats acceptable to you.
im sorry that we dont agree on semantics. i really have no "attitude" and how one can attribute an attitude to text on a website is debatable at best.
I have no ill-will, malice, or attitude, i had a general question that i was asking about and was looking to someone who looked like they had the answer for it. Normally, i "sort" these things out myself, but i went against my better judgement and asked here...(hence my 2 reply post history.)
if you can help me, i would gladly reward you for your time, via bitcoin, etc; I honestly have no issue other than i dont have the time to sit and look into this stuff like i use to 4-5 years ago. I promise you, i have no sort of attitude. this is just a forum FFS, and above all else, im not an 'ingrate.' i am always appreciative for any help that i receive.
If you could find the will to help me i would greatly appreciate it, otherwise lets not part ways with any ill-will, that's the last thing that i would ever want to happen.
thanks again for your time.
Ok so here's what my experience with system app remover was, and I hope I wasn't sounding rude or unappreciative, Immsimply trying to work towards a certain endpoint solution if possible.
System app remover did not permit me to relocate user apps into system space, in fact it won't let me move any apps as it claims "sdcard share the same disk with os", both in "move to phone" and in "move to sdcard" options.
Is there any reliable way to install apps directly to the external SDCard? Maybe install them to internal storage and then manually move them and symlink them? That wouldn't work for large apps but might allow installation of more smaller apps?
Essentially what you've stated means even the system is on its own "partition" right? So as I remove stuff that's stored in the /system folder, it's freeing space but not space my Android can access for the purpose of installation ?
Is that a proper summary of my situation?
Thanks in advance

OK, let's start again. Maybe I mistook your response, it just seemed a little snipey. To get help in the right direction, proper details of what the actual issue is goes a long way to obtaining the solution. Stating a message caused a brick isn't anything I've ever come across before which is why I asked the question? However it seems further to that post you actually meant Xposed caused the brick after you saw that message and rebooted.
So going back to what I previously stated about correct details, here we are 3 unnecessary posts later.
Moving on...to install Xposed you need to ensure you use the wanam build of Xposed.

Did you backup the entire system in TWRP before the unfortunate UI removal/disabling?
After re-flashing Lineage, did you restore the kernel patched by magisk?
Does Lineage boot properly in Safe Mode?
I will not answer your further questions.

Hello guys,
I really need your help here I don't know what to do. This is an android problem, specifically on Xiaomi Mi 10T Pro.
I installed busybox SB Patcher (which is a modified version of lucky patcher from sbenny. com). I tried to use it and it crashed, after that all the apps on my phone got their icons replaced by the default android logo and had their names replaced with their original app names (com. google. etc.). Any application I tried to use would not work. After a while of nothing working I rebooted the device and now it won't boot. It's stuck at the MIUI Logo. After a while I get to the MIUI Rescue System were my only option is to wipe my data. I want to avoid losing my data at all costs.
The devices was rooted. I am not new to this kind of stuff, I have rooted a lot of devices in the past and used lucky patcher before and this is a first, I have no clue what could have possibly gone wrong or why it happened. I am pretty sure it was not a virus. I scanned the files using 2 different antivirus software plus the built in security before and after installation (I always do that to be extra safe).
For root I followed this guide: Root XDA Guide
I know it has something with either busybox or SB Patcher, maybe something went wrong when it was trying to build the custom apk ? I really don't know. My devices has been rooted for about 1,5 years now so i am positive it is not the rom or the root.
I am at a loss here, I feel quite stupid to be honest. Is there anything to do to save my phone without wiping my data ?
Thank you all so much !
Edit:
I am thinking about plugging the phone in my computer to see if I have access to my files, if they are still there and see what is going on, but I am not sure if it is safe or if it's a good idea
Also I should mention I can boot into TWRP but I can't find any system files. System is mounted but I see that it reads internal storage as 0mb. I couldn't find why
Try to re-flash Stock ROM.

I will try that. I am guessing that means I will lose my root and twrp ? I don't really care as long as it fixes my phone but I'd just like to know.
Also I remember when I flashed the custom rom I had to wipe my data, won't I have to do that as well ?
And last question, should I flash the latest version ? I read somewhere that Xiaomi has anti-rollback protection. Could that be a problem ? For rooting in the future for example ?
Sorry for the bombardment of questions here, but my knowledge on the matter is deficient.
Thank you for your reply !
Can someone please help me ? It might be a noob question but I am really afraid to mess up
I connected my phone to my PC and I can't access it's files so I can't buck them up nor load the rom I need to flash, is there a setting on TWRP I have wrong or what do I have to do ? My phone doesn't show up at all on my computer

Lucky Patcher (or any of its derivates) is considered serious warez on XDA, and we do not provide a platform to discuss any issues by its use! Maybe it's worth to completely review the XDA Forum Rules? Below you find an excerpt:
6. Do not post or request warez.
If a piece of software requires you to pay to use it, then pay for it. We do not accept warez nor do we permit members to request, post, promote or describe ways in which warez, cracks, serial codes or other means of avoiding payment, can be obtained or used. This is a site of developers, i.e. the sort of people who create such software. When you cheat a software developer, you cheat us as a community.
