After rooting your phone with kingo.. what happens.? Does it say rooted successfully or you get any error?
If it says rooted successfully then install supersu from play store, it should work
Or try rooting your phone using framaroot
Don't forget to hit thanks if I have helped

just do a factory reset
And after that try rooting your phone
(I always factory reset my phone whenever I am having problems with it. That's why I suggest it to many users )
PS: I m not 100% sure if it will work or not but you can give it a try
=> which exploit u used to root using framaroot? Gandalf works for Samsung

No it will not downgrade your phone.. it only restores settings.
If you want to downgrade your phone, you will have to root it and then have to flash strck firmware

No need of root to downgrade! Just download the previous firmware version from sammobile.com and flash it with ODIN.

Hmmmm you don't need root access to flash using odin (I came to know about it just now thanks to @sanjay.addya )
So you can just download the old stock firmware and flash it properly using odin.
Follow this tutorial to know how to flash stock firmware: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2505436

China roms are pre-rooted
MIUI Developement versions are pre-rooted, stable ones are not.
I used THIS link to root on miui7 with temporary twrp recovery. @ankur_shah88, try dis. Dis one installs SuperSu.

1_First of all you should be on the latest version of the stock ROM .17
2_Root your xperia l (use the link)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-l/general/rootkit-xperia-l-15-3-1-17-1-click-root-t2591290
Now there are two methods:
With PC :
install recovery using this tool

Without PC (works with CM) :

Sure there are other way's.
Do you have already root rights?
Which ROM is installed?
If you can manage to get root rights with a one click root app for example,
you can flash TWRP directly with the TWRP app or with the terminal.

But you could try to use KingoRoot apk for example.
