ok, so im getting the 100 minute, unlimited data 30$ tmobile plan on my sprint nexus 5 cause sprint totally sucks.
i have a google voice number and i was just wondering, now that hangouts has calling integrated, can i just use google voice number to make and receive calls over data?
im reading conflicting things, like some people want call forwarding from tmobile (im thinking they want their cell number forwarded to google voice) which 1)isnt an option and 2) not really needed since people will be calling my seperate google voice number
also reading that tmobile blocks google voice on their prepaid plans for some folks
is anyone using the 30 month 100 minute unlimited tmobile data plan and making and receiving calls using a seperate google voice number?
Yes VoIP in Hangouts works just fine with the T-Mobile $30 plan. You can't forward from T-Mobile to GV but that doesn't matter if you use your GV number to take incoming calls.

Yes, I just set up a GV number and I'm going to begin providing it to my family members and close friends to use as the number to reach me. Everyone else can leave a message for me to pick up in visual VM, and then I'll call them back if needed. The only negative is that T-Mobile's coverage really stinks outside of a few areas where it's screaming fast. Inside my house in Metro Detroit, my wife can get 30 Mbps on her Verizon GS4 while I get 5-8 on my LG G3. And it can be really spotty as you travel between cities & towns, so missing a few calls & texts when driving is going to be a real probability. But for $30/mo, I can probably live with it.

The coverage is what killed it for me. I'd been waiting for Hangouts and voice to merge but switched to straight talk last month. Happy to finally get coverage in the locations I'm in the most.
First, you sure can just use Google Voice number to make and receive calls over data. In fact, Hangouts only use data, not voice/talk minute at all.
Second, prepaid mobile phone plans do not have conditional forwarding which is required to forward incoming calls to mobile DID (Direct Inward Dialing -- telephone number) to Google Voice DID. Therefore, you are correct. It is not an option. Moreover, you are also correct as to there is no such need to forward calls from mobile DID to Google Voice DID due to people will be using separate Google Voice DID. I would suggest you port Sprint mobile DID to Ring.to and have Ring.to forward all incoming calls and texts to your Google Voice DID. Consequently, people have been using your current Sprint mobile DID will continue be able to contact you without changing your DID. You just get a new DID from T-Mobile when you sign up for $30 prepaid plan for 100 minutes talk, unlimited text and data with first 5 GB up to LTE speeds.
Third, I am using $30 prepaid plan for 100 minutes talk, unlimited text and data with first 5 GB up to LTE speeds and using Hangouts for outgoing calls. It just work flawlessly! I use Voxox for incoming calls and do not use mobile DID came with T-Mobile $30 plan at all.

My wife and I are on Sprint with Evos. We're thinking about switching to T-Mobile and getting Sensations.
For me the biggest hangup is how the phone and T-Mobile service will integrate with Google Voice. My current plan is to port my cell # to GV, get a new cell # from T-Mobile, and forward calls from GV to the new cell #.
Under the above scenario, will all calls eat minutes from our pool?
Will we still get free T-Mobile to T-Mobile calls?
Do WiFi calls eat minutes? Articles online seem to indicate that as of May they no longer do, but the website and T-Mobile reps say they will.
Any help/advice is greatly appreciated.

I was in the same boat as you. I have a ported Voice number as well. Yes, if you use their network, you will still get the free tmo to tmo. And the weekend and nights that they offer, depending on your plan. And WiFi does use your minutes if they are whenever minutes.

I just switched myelf. I got the new unlimited talk/text/web. Just ported my sprint number to google voice and plan on forwarding all calls to my t mobile phone.
Couldn't pass up the price of the new plan.
You can get free WiFi calling added to your plan so it will not deduct from your plan minutes.

I want to switch to AT&T for the One X soon and am looking for ways to reduce my bill. I don't want to pay $20/mo for texting so using Google Voice is a good idea for that. I initially wanted to port my number to GV so that I wouldn't have to give people a new number, but after some testing I feel like the voice lag in calls through GV is a little too significant to use it for all my calls, so now I'm considering porting my number to AT&T like normal and using my separate GV number for texts.
I'd like to know what you guys do and how it works out for you.

Just keep in mind that GV texting doesn't support short codes, nor MMS (although Google said it is coming).
I'd switch to google voice full time if it had two features that it's currently missing. 1. Obviously mms. 2. Threaded group SMS (which I found out the One X doesnt support either)! I really miss group SMS coming from the iPhone as that's how I communicated with a bunch of my friends and colleagues.
Telling people to just email me is definitely worth the $20 savings...

I've been debating getting a new number through Google Voice and switching to that. Cutting the unlimited texting from my plan would sure be nice. I don't make more than 10-20 minutes in calls most months, so the latency issue is not major for me. I suspect it's related to the inherent latency on the 3G/HSPA network. I think this is one of the areas where LTE is supposed to be a major improvement over HSPA+. Has anybody tried GV over 3G and wifi/LTE. If so, was it any better?

Yea but isn't that like using Facebook messenger or whatsapp? It's not an SMS replacement unless everyone you text actually has it installed.
Pretty much. I'm not really sure how that works out as a replacement for a texting brand. Maybe they will elaborate.
I use Google Voice and save my money, not work the 20 bucks for MMS and short code. I fill in the blanks of those with twitter/facebook etc etc.

I chose the unlimited text because that gives you unlimited mobile to mobile calls, any carrier.. That allowed me to drop down from unlimited minutes to 450 minutes with rollover. I'll never talk 450 minutes to a landline during peak i dont think. I dont know anybody with a landline, all mobile. That dropped the Minutes from $69 to $39. I', going to give it a try...We'll see

Yeah, I'm used to having unlimited mobile to mobile on Sprint, but I think I can get by without it and still only 450 minutes. A lot of calls happen on nights and weekends, and then I can take advantage of the rollover (not sure how long those minutes last before expiring).

You should be able to SMS through GV by just being on WiFi I think, but you won't be able to make calls without the SIM since it goes over the cell network and uses minutes like normal. However, if you use something like GrooVe IP, you should be able to make calls with just WiFi.
Unlimited text family plan for $20 FTW!
I've been using Sprint for ~2 1/2 years on a Family plan with my mom while in college and would like to transition onto my own plan. T-mobile's Monthly4G $30 (I don't talk on the phone much) would be perfect for me, and if it wasn't then the $50 plan would still be cheaper than our current Sprint plan split in half.
The one issue is Google Voice. I work in a facility where I can't have my cell phone on property so I handle my text messaging and voicemail 8 hours a day through GV's web interface. With Sprint it is incredibly convenient, my cell phone number is my GV number.
My thought is that if I go to T-mobile, I can get a new phone with a new cell phone number and just port my phone number to GV, but I'm concerned with how it would handle MMS. Can anyone provide any insight?

I do not like contracts, especially this one since upgrading phones cost, that used to somewhat offset the fact they charge more for contracts than no contracts.
If we can get rid of the $165 bill all together, that'd be wonderful.

If you live in US, then Google Hangouts is now your best friend.
If it is on wifi only then you don't need a contract in the first place... you get your data from your home internet, and as was said you can use hangout + google voice number to send texts and receive/make calls via Hangouts.
If you add FreedomPop (Sprint phone only) you will be able to get data/texts/calls without wifi.
My setup is a S3 on FreedomPop with a google voice number & Hangouts, without the FreedomPop app installed. Instead I have Hangout set up to make and receive calls through voiceip.
I've got an LG Urbane 2nd Edition LTE with a T-Mo SIM, running the latest AW 2.0 preview. I'd love for it to make Google Voice calls just like my phone does. (It doesn't do anything with I receive a call on my phone which would work best with a GV setup.) It does receive calls when I call the watch directly. I've tried side loading the Google Voice app, but it immediately closes when I try to run it. Does anyone have any ideas?

Huh? I make calls on mine, no problem. It's reliable--works anywhere (AT&T network)--and because of that I've changed my regular smartphone to an easy-to-read phablet. Since I can rely on the LG Watch Urbane LTEx2 for phone calls, texts & grocery lists, I leave the phablet home unless I'm traveling.

that only works on AT&T, which IMO is too expensive unless you're in a grandfathered plan
Not expensive, my watch bill's $9 for 90 days on a pay-as-you-go plan. My main phone is $27 a month, unlimited talk & text, 3 GB data. Yes, I'm on AT&T's network but I pay through "H2O Wireless", an AT&T-based MVNO.

My SO is on cricket and being de-prioritized in high traffic areas isn't worth the lower cost on MVNO's, not to mention VoLTE and WiFi Calling
I'm on T-Mobile on a family plan - we have 6 lines with 4GB each (+intl roaming, free music streaming, etc) for $100/mo
TMo's great where you can get them, had them myself before I moved to the stix.
Don't understand why the watch doesn't work on TMo, tho. Frequencies line up, right? Gotta be something in settings, gotta be a work-around.
Post a new topic at the front, "Help! Can't get watch to work on TMo!" or something like that in the header. Somebody here knows how to get it going.

nah, it definitely works fine in terms of connectivity and LTE reception (I"m borrowing it from my friend for a month to try it out, have a phone sim with 4GB data in it) - my issue is that the phone number doesn't match my personal number (T-Mo assigned me a random other number). Also, the speaker volume is a bit low if you're using it in the car or a outdoors during activity

Just curious... when using H20 are you able to pair the watch to your phone through cell data and therefore receive texts to your phone on the watch when you leave the phone at home? I ask because when I first purchased my LGU2 over a year ago I attempted to use a couple of MVNOs unsuccessfully. H20 was one of them. I could make calls/text with the watch's number, but the data wouldn't work so I couldn't pair over cell data instead of Wi-Fi or bluetooth.

I don't use the AT&T app for connecting watch to phone so I don't get to use those features. I give friends my Google Voice/Hangouts numbers and Google forwards calls/texts to the watch & to my smart phone. I know phone calls I initiate on the watch use the watch's number, much to the chagrin of the caller-id-checking friends I call.
Also, I reverted last month from AW2.0 back to AW1.5 (stock) because I couldn't get a note-keeping app to work well on AW2.0. I don't think anything changed with phone connectivity and SMS.

So does data work with H20? I guess that was my question. I don't use AT&T either, I'm using Truphone, but the watch should be able to pair to the phone by using cell data instead of bluetooth if you have a data connection on the watch. Were you able to download apps directly to the watch in 2.0 without being paired to the phone? That should have required data on the watch to work. Also, if you're away from your phone, do you get the cloud icon on the watch indicating disconnected from the phone?

Ok, thanks. Maybe H20 has updated their SIM since I tried it a year ago and the data settings work now in the watch. Truphone is also pay as you go. The prices are similar.
