New to Android - Confused About Movies/TV

I've got the LG G2x. I reckon the battery won't sustain watching a movie or tv show. But I'm game to try!
I see that I can rent movies from Android App Market but unless i am mistaken these are streaming. I travel often for business and would like to watch a movie or tv show on the plane without paying for wifi on the plane. Plus it is not available on all flights.
So how can I download content to the Android phone and watch it not streaming?
I've researched some and most threads talk about pirating and converting, etc. I'm looking for legal and easy.

Well you can still purchase dvd's...either standard or blu-ray and rip the movie onto your computer as a backup, and it's 100% legal. Then you can buy a program that will convert the file into a more compressed format...again, legal. Then you can purchase a large sdmicro card to put the file onto your phone. Then you can find an app on market that plays the file format you have converted to.
All of this would be legal. Now the specifics on HOW to do it, are a bit more complicated, and you would really be better served doing some research on forums dedicated to video converting.

DVD Catalyst is the best IMO.

So no easy way it seems. I guess this is another reason iPhones are so expensive!

Opera Mini will download streaming videos. You can go to youtube and search for free movies, they got some good ones such as "They Live" and the last one I just watched "Sex & Consequences", or just go to any other site that streams video and you can download it using Opera Mini browser to watch at your convenience. Simple...
EDIT: in order to download from youtube you need to change to desktop view. Scroll all the way to the bottom of the site from within opera mini then choose desktop.

Handbrake for the win! Pop in a DVD, select the output method hit start, 30 mins later your dvd has been ripped to you desired video format, best of all it is totally free for both Mac and PC

I ripped some of my favorite movies from my DVD collection into AVI..bought an 8GB Class 10 Micro SD card = total of 16GB... and transfered 10 movies into there... if I get bored I just delete and put another movie in there...

Hi guys,
just got a HP touchpad. now is there a video player on here? and if its there what format do they have to be in to view it. have tried a couple of different ones and cant get them up.
Is there a player app i can download onto it at all ?

there is a photos & videos app built in, but it's pretty poor for video.
you need to add your video files to the root of the built in storage (the tablet installs onto your computer as a removable drive).
i still haven't got my head around the video file support just yet, but it doesn't seem to handle .avi, divx, xvid etc.
mp4 seems to be the main format.
there are a couple of apps for streaming videos from a upnp media server, but nothing free as far as i can tell.
kalemsoft media player seems to be the best of these as it lets you load video files from the local storage on your tablet as well as browse for remote stuff.
i have successfully played an avi file using this app.
i've only tried the demo version so far which requires internet access in order to assess the trial period.
i don't particularly want to purchase the paid version just yet.

I used Handbrake and followed the instructions here: http://forums.precentral.net/hp-tou...n-resources/287212-handbrake-preset-dvds.html I just tried a short 45 minute kids dvd to see if it would work okay. It was about a 400mb file. Placed it in a folder called Videos on the root of the usb partition and it shows up fine in the Photos and Videos app.

see i tried doing that as well. creating a folder called videos on the root and it wasn't detected.
only when i added the file direct to root could i access it.
are directory names case sensitive?
a video player that allows you to browse and/or add directories would be much better.
EDIT: looks like i had a folder called video. changed it to videos and it shows up.
strangely enough kalemsoft creates a folder recordings. when i added a video file to that, it also showed up.

I have put my videos in the download folder and they show up in the stock player fine. Also converted DIVX avi files to MP4 with Handbrake. Used the ipad HD settings for nice quality.

Kalemsoft Media Player wil read a lot of video formats , you can find it on app catalog.

The kalemsof that i downloaded isnt displaying in full screen and sometimes will hang on my TP. Guess its still not compatible to TP yet?

Thanx for the tip about Handbrake, nunja. I'll try it for conversions. I concur with the settings...
I'm on a Pre 2 and have no problems with mp4 playing (once you get the settings down it becomes rote). For my phone I use iPod settings...
For ripping from DVD I use DVDFab3 - I know there are way newer versions out there and I tried them but always go back to version 3. I just like the UI and it has never let me down. Point it at a DVD or ISO and under Mobile click Generic. You can configure it for generic mp4 and get a resolution up to 848x480 which should be alright on the TP screen. Your settings like Resolution, bitrate, volume level, subpicture - can all be saved as a profile.
DVDFab3 in a .rar file. Just extract and it will run out of the folder without install...

[Q] Video Players on WP7

Hi,
I want to enter da smartphonz world, and i'm makin a few research. About WP, I know the OS is completely locked up 'cause of M$, but I don't give a damn. Except on one point:
Is there applications which let me look at a .mkv video? And if I cannot, what happens with subs, especially .srt, and multiples soundtracks, Japanese/English/French as an example?

For mkv files you'll need to convert them to mp4 and as for subs you'll need them merged into the video for it to be able to be seen on WP7

You can sync nearly everything through zune...
But that's the only thing you can do atm...
But keep being positive: 'cuz cotulla and other devs working to unlock the phone in a way that we can write native apps and that would open the possibility to port other music/video player which include support for other codecs

I have flv working. I am making a browser which will let you play megavideo files. I plan to include more video sites. It works quite well... Ill open a thread soon with more info

But M$ stays M$: they will probably never support officially an open-source codec. Even iOS can play mkv, using alternative players.
I'm gonna search the web to find lore about Cotulla

since when is mkv a codec? MKV is a container, usually containing a non-open codec (h.264), which MS supports. All they need to do is support the container...

Don't mix up containers and codecs, it's a different kind of things
BTW, for containers Silverlight has a great feature, custom container parser, called MediaStreamSource. So nobody preventing you from writing your own container support including Matroska (.mkv)
But WP7 video codecs are really limited to: MPEG-4 part 2, MPEG-4 part 10 (H.264), WMV9, H.263, and of course, raw RGB (you may implement your own decoding however w/o hardware acceleration it will be very slow/not possible).

You are right
I am not a developer. All I need is a native Avi player. I think it's the minimum I can expect from a smartphone nowadays.
Even my all business Blackberry Bold can read Avi movie files. Just a drag & drop via USB cable and I can watch my movies
With WP7 (and Zune) it's a mess and a waste of time.
Sometimes WP7 seems really hopeless...

I understand your point. However why do not use a streaming video?
Instead "just drag&n&dropping" 4-6 GB HD movies in .mkv (what is not "just" but takes a veeeeery looooong time ) you may instantly transcode and watch video. AFAIK there are few existing solutions on marketplace (I do have my own - much-much better than existing apps but unpublished and still under very slow development - I'm implementing Mango features such as background queue downloader etc.)
The cons is - you need a powerful desktop PC/notebook, always on, to serve streaming but the pros is -you'll have your very own streaming server, transcode can be done in realtime (even for full HD movies!)

I don't think so. Seems like MS have a "gradual" strategy to open new API's and features; also, xda whitehats working hard to build "freedom" ROM's for WP7 (probably, someone can port good native arm wince videoplayer).

Srsly, I don't understand what you mean. Do you want to stream movies just like cloud music, like a "mediaplayer dropbox"?
Don't you know that most carriers don't offer unlimited data plans? And in order to stream Full HD files, you need 4G don't you?
On board medias will be outdated one day, sure, but not now, unfortunately.

You misunderstood me completely
First (fortunately) WP7 is not limited to 3G connection only: there are WiFi and Ethernet (via USB).
Second, I already stream movies like "cloud music" Technically it works like: I have a "streaming server" (small WPF C# program, running on my home media server/player PC), and WP7 app, streaming video client (with ability to download and store media). PC program preforms a real-time "transparent" (on the fly) transcoding of medias, and "stream" (not a real stream of course) transcoded data to the WP7 player.
I don't have an unlimited data plan so my usual "scenarios" are:
- if I do have a WiFi access (most hotels/places etc.) I can easy browse media folders on my home PC and watch any movie;
- if I'm going somewhere without WiFi access (to the flight, campground, beach etc.) and want to watch movies, I've put some movies to the queue and download 'em via WiFi/Eth to the handset. Average size of 2 hours transcoded movie is about 600/800 Mb (actually it depends, what kind of adaptive stream mode I have chosen)
Average transocde frame rate (conversion speed) for the full HD video is about 90-110 fps on my PC. It's not too fast but I do have cache
So, in general my solution is useful and not so bad (I also have an Android tablets, with mounted network shares of my media folders. And most often, I can't play video because of player or network bandwidth limitation - full HD videos are huge!)

Okay, I got it. A real player could be better, if I want to change options like subs or everything else while playing on my phone, but the "screen capture" erases all the troubles about codecs and co.
Other issue is the time spoilt because of the conversion on the computer, and not "live" on the phone. And it depends on your PC CPU, not on the smartphone processing unit. But you problably increase the battery life of the phone, don't you?

Well you're right. I'm legally pirating contents not available in my area. This isn't an excuse, I know, but honestly, what should I do? I buy what I can buy: movies, music thanks to Amazon (I can waste around 100 bucks a month that way). But when it comes to underground japanese animation, whitout any official translation or dubbed version, the only way is mkv.
Edit: TV show? I don't watch this kind of crap, ty.

Which video format allows subtitles embedded on/off?

I'm converting blurays to video files 1080p for my TF using catalyst and anydvd. Which video format allows embedment of subtitles but also allows me to turn it on and off when I watch? I know with mp4, once the subtitles are embedded, you are stuck seeing it forever. Any advice would be appreciated.

Try MKV. You can insert several subtitles. If you have a decent player, you should be able to play it with or without subs.

How do I change video format in catalyst? The default is mp4. I'm sorry for being so noob. Tired and can't seem to find the option.

Get mkvtoolnix.
Since mkv is a container you can insert audio/video/subs to them despite the audio/video/sub format.

I really appreciate your help. I really do. But I'd rather just use it straight from catalyst. Remember that I'll be doing my entire bluray collection. I don't want to manually add in subtitles each time. All I want is to find the correct settings and then insert and press go everytime.

Please enlighten me about catalyst, since I don't use it...
I suppose you can drag your files and make the program convert all of them to a specific format. If the program is able to extract the subs from the blueray, I would suggest to make it save them separate from the video (if possible). For example, having Superman.avi and Superman.srt, this way you don't embed the subs in the movie and you should be able to turn them on/off in your player.
Aside from that, .mp4 supports embed dubs, so it should be possible also to do it that way.

You might want to take a look at handbrake; I don't have much experience with subtitles but remember seeing settings.

MPEG-4 Part 14/MP4 is also a container format. The difference is in Matroska/MKV are probably less limited in what you can shove in it.

[Q] watching dvd movies on my note tablet

Anybody know what i can do to watch dvd on my Samsung note 10.1.?
Now i get all the time an error becaus he cant find the right program to read the dvd files.

I use DVDFab to rip the DVD to my laptop as a .iso file type (about 7-8 GB). I then use DVDFab to convert the .iso to a MP4 file type and cut the file size down to about 2+ GB. Copy that to the external SD card for the tablet.
The stock movie player handles this just fine.

I use Handbrake, with the right support files installed (can't help you here, it Just Works on a Linux box with the Medibuntu repo added) it rips DVDs right off the drive with no problem.
I'll post my preset when I have some time.

In what filetype must i switch?

My old Pentium computer with a 166Mhz CPU (and also my 1st gen xbox) can play DVD iso files so I can't understand why our tablets can't do it. Especially now when the file system on our MicroSD cards allow +4Gb files.

why would anyone want to play .iso on our tabs? all an iso is is a replica of the entire dvd which is useless on a tab.

if you're ripping the dvd's on PC I recommend using DVDfab - convert them to mp4, don't muck with the resolution but you might want to swith the audio from 5.1 to just stereo.
for the playback I recommend Super Video. After messing with various mobos, MX, real, and whatever else I got a hold of I was won over by Super with it's use of picture-in-picture, easy integration of subtitles, all the formats it can playback and built in screenshot tool (ya, I know, the tablet has one already). plus it has some nice sorting tools for the videos. The only annoying downside I found was that it'll list off what's in a .nomedia dir and doesn't have the option to ignore those directories.

The next downloading movies are xvid or avi files, then the problem seems to be solved

A 166 MHz Pentium is nowhere near capable of MPEG-2 DVD playback - If a device like that was playing DVDs, it had hardware acceleration.
These days, hardware acceleration focus has changed - MPEG-4 is the dominant codec. While I think technically our devices support hwaccel MPEG-2, it's not a high priority/focus due to the fact that it delivers very poor compression ratios compared to MPEG-4 AVC. The VOB container format used for DVD, while derived from the MPEG-2 program stream container, is a complex mangled mess. Since no Android device has a physical DVD drive, no one bothers expending time to support this format since it's easy for a PC to transcode from VOB with MPEG-2 video and AC3 audio to a format more appropriate to mobile devices.
MPEG-4 AVC (aka H.264) when combined with AAC audio can easily compress a full length movie to <1GB and retain excellent quality. A DVD, on the other hand, will typically be 4GB or more. In fact, most Blu-Ray movies will compress to 720p H.264 at <2GB while retaining excellent quality.
A 4x or more improvement in compression ratio is worth the time spent to transcode to H.264+AAC. (especially since you can just stick the DVD in, kick off Handbrake, and go to bed.)

Would I say it'd be impossible to play DVDs? No,nothing is, but it begs the question of why it would be needed, if developed when you can rip it onto a 32/64/128 gb microsd card.
I do have one idea why, and it is because it allows people to use their DVD collection on their Droid without all that work.
Considering that Droid devices like Samsung's have the capability to use external drives so long as they are self powering, it all comes down to the software end. Like an emulator, the app or mod will need to supply the drivers or BIOS suitable for DVD drives and I know where such thing could be sourced from. Linux.
I know that Linux can play DVDs , so they must have the drivers out there to port to the Droid OS to insert via a modded Rom that supports DVD drives and thus, DVD playback. A DVD/Keyboard hybrid and a dock connector to hold the tablet would be a cool thing to undergo , especially since it would give the Note 10.1 and other tablets a laptop-like ability.
In fact , Samsung has done the DVD part, called the SE-218BB DVD / CD writer.
While I love the top concept, it seems useless unless it went a step further and had a keyboard. The only obstacle is that the form factor of the Note 10.1 first generation would look f'ed up with such a setup but next gen? If they did or a third party went for this setup to accommodate the Note's form like a certain iPad keyboard, that would in turn be pretty neat because it would make the Note 10.1 into a netbook with a DVD wallop.

Buy a DVD player that has WiFi sharing capabilities, either Asus or Samsung make one.

Why is it so hard to understand that some people don't want to convert their ISO files to other formats? I have a massive DVD collection on my NAS and it would be nice to be able to play them on my Note. With the DVD format you keep the chapter information which is nice on DVDs with music videos and karaoke DVDs for instance.
The Note is definitely capable of playing the mpeg2 stream... no doubt about it.
I've got a 13TB NAS so space is no issue whatsoever.

I saw this on Amazon in the review section I hope it works for you.
(1) Install mxvideo player on your tablet.
(2) Plug your dvd writer SE-218 into your tablet via usb.
(3) Press the eject button to eject the tray.
(4) While the tray is open, press and hold the eject button until the green light on the tray stays lit. Then release. This brings your dvd drive into av mode.
(5) Close the tray.
(6) Now, eject and open the tray and put in a dvd.
(7) Your tablet will now recognize your dvd as a usb device. Your tablet will appear to be frozen for about 10 seconds. Don't panic! It's just reading the dvd disc. Just leave it alone until it's read it.
(8) Using a file manager, navigate into the usb device and find a vob file that is big, like a couple gigs or so. Play it with your mxplayer.

I forgot to mention. Every time you plug in your drive to watch a dvd, you will have to eject the tray and press the button for 3 seconds.

Can't get Power to even come on to dvd??? to follow instructions given...
Thanks for the feedback.... I tried doing as you instructed. I brought the Samsung Usb connector and connected the Dvd and I could not even get power to the Dvd player to come on.... So I checked to make sure that the Samsung Dvd was actually working..... I connected it to an actual power supply and the green light came on and I was able to pop open the Dvd tray. I disconnected it and went back to the usb connection and my device recognized that I had a High Power USB connector in but that's it.... No juice or No fire for the Dvd Player......no green light ever comes on....What am I doing wrong???? Or what do I need to do????

(1) Install mxvideo player on your tablet.
(2) Plug your dvd writer SE-218 into your tablet via usb.
(3) Press the eject button to eject the tray.
(4) While the tray is open, press and hold the eject button until the green light on the tray stays lit. Then release. This brings your dvd drive into av mode.
(5) Close the tray.
(6) Now, eject and open the tray and put in a dvd.
(7) Your tablet will now recognize your dvd as a usb device. Your tablet will appear to be frozen for about 10 seconds. Don't panic! It's just reading the dvd disc. Just leave it alone until it's read it.
(8) Using a file manager, navigate into the usb device and find a vob file that is big, like a couple gigs or so. Play it with your mxplayer.
VOILA! You can now play dvd's on-the-go. Please spread the word. Amazon is only selling this puppy for 34 bucks. Well worth it!

try mxplayer.
it can play many formats (mp4, avi, rmvb, .... divx, xvid)

wondershare, free on play market, can play DVDs: just rip the dvd and copy to sd card or barely copy it to sd card,
or you ca use MakeMKV to create an mkv out of the dvd: it takes space but it's faster than converting in divx or mpeg
do not forget you cannot copy files greater than 4gb to sd card, so after mkv is create just split it in two (I believe you can do it with makeMKV otherwise try MKVmerge)
wondershare is faster: just copy dvd to sd card, makeMKV you can leave out unwanted audios, subs and extra features
