[Q] Power button does not always put screen to sleep - ONE Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
Sometimes, my power button will not put the phone to sleep... Other times, it works perfectly...
It is not a hardware problem, as when this happens, I can ALWAYS hold it and see the shutdown/reboot menu. Then, after dismissing the menu, I can ALWAYS put the phone to sleep using the button. It's like if the key was ignored when that happens.
By the way, double tapping the status bar works all the time to put the device to sleep.
I think it is a software problem.
Unfortunately, I cannot always make it happen, as my button works probably 90% of the time...
Anybody got this ?

I don't think it's a hardware problem, because it alwas work to open the screen.
I was able to catch a logcat and I opened a jira for it :
https://jira.cyanogenmod.org/browse/BACON-1344
Hope somebody can find what is the problem.

My jira was merged :
https://jira.cyanogenmod.org/browse/BACON-837
Anybody else have this problem ?

My volume and power button's both are not working as of yesterday . They worked fine after 38R update , but started to have this issue for no reason .
Luckily I had the double Tap to wake up selected and so am able to access the phone.

I too get something similar but it's to wake up the screen for me that works 1/2 the time. Also double taping to wake up is pretty bad since 38R.

I have the exact same problem my self. It is extremely annoying! I can't find a way to fix that. I tried numerous different roms with no luck. Unfortunately i can't find anyone else in the internet having the same issue. It seems it is just you and me at the moment. The only work around is using dt2w which always works but the problem with dt2w many times unlocks the phone without wanting to.
I hope some experienced people here have a look on this problem!!

Please vote on jira.cyanogenmod.org to get some attention to this issue.

Wizard Keeps Turning On

Ever since upgrading to WM6, my Wizard won't stay off. I can't keep it to stay in standby. Someone mentioned to me once that this was a known issue, and said to search the threads. I haven't been able to find anything about this. Does anyone know about this, and how to fix it?
Thanks.
Try disabling the screen auto-off settings and/or removing your password.
Thanks for the suggestion, but they didn't work....Device will still power us with backlight off, and buttons disabled. Only thing that works is the touchscreen. I press the standby button, and the backlight comes on with buttons active....weird.
Theres is a combination of settings that causes that... let me see if can find the post so you can tweak it out and that doesnt happend anymore. Its a very known bug.

There are many threads, here is just one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=292547&highlight=wakeup I found it by searching.

I tried the fix from the thread. The unit will still turn on, without backlight after I've put it into standby. It's the strangest thing...no keys will work accept standby, but screen functions work. It might be the ROM....

Power Button Issue

I have been having odd power button issues since updating to 2.3.4. It is almost like it is getting stuck or something.
Sometimes when I hit the power button to turn off the screen, the screen goes off for half a second then comes back on. This also happens when going from off to on (i.e. flicker on then back off), but it seems rarer.
Sometimes when I hit the home button (and just the home button), it takes a screenshot like I am hitting the button as well even though I am not.
All of this is fixed by just hitting the power button a few times.
Needless to say it is annoying. I thought it might be something mechanical, but I took the case off the back and the issue still occurred. It also seems like the button is clicking then unclicking (i.e. not getting stuck). I had no issues prior to updating to 2.3.4.
Anyone else had this happen or know a fix or workaround?
Yes! I have the same exact problem after the update!!
Glad to see I'm not the only one.
It's very annoying.
My backlight turns on by itself randomly and often if you press the power button to turn the screen off, it goes off then comes back on or flickers on and off. The power button doesnt always turn the screen back on either.
It also gets stuck where I press the home screen and it keeps taking pictures.
HTC better fix this!

I have the exact same problem too since upgrading! I have disabled the screenshot function in build.prop but that only stops the repeated screenshots part of the problem. The main problem with the power button still persists.
I'm having this too, its come and gone to different extents - pretty sure it was happening a bit before the update though.
I'm worried it is mechanical, I couldn't get it to happen with the back cover off but it could have just been coincidence. I can live with having to press the button again every so often but the screenshot thing annoys the hell out of me!
Since the update I've experienced an issue with my power button as well. Sometimes when I hit the button to turn the screen on, nothing happens. At first I thought it was just me but it happens at least a couple of times a day and never happened before the update.
I don't normally turn my screen off by pressing the power button so I can't report on that. Guess I should count my blessing that the screen shot function is not acting up.
Thanks for posting cause was beginning to think it was just me.
FIX!
I found a fix for this, in your build.prop remove the framework line for screen shots and then go in recovery and whipe cache partition twice as well as dalvic twice!
Cheers!

I've just tried this twice but the problem still persists. Sure the screenshot issue is gone but the powering on and off the display is still intermittent.

I was having the same problem with the power button and was thinking it was hardware thanks for the heads up..
am I like the only one without this problem >.< lol. lucky me
I have this same problem too, I believe its connected to the screenshots but i don't know how to turn it off easily (how do I get into build prop?)
This is definitely after the update, I had absolutely no problems with the power button prior to the update.
I don't have any power button isues at all on my European Sensation (2.3.4 still S-On yet). Playing around it just for a week. But the Screenshot thing is a feature not a bug!
Just press <power button> + <Home> to take a screenshot. I like it.
I just starting having this issue yesterday too. Thought it was my power button getting stuck but good to see it's not a hardware problem and hopefully HTC fixes this.

I think you're right. As a test, I used AntTek App Manager to freeze "Scribble" which is also known as com.htc.mysketcher and I haven't had the issue yet. I believe this component is responsible for monitoring for the key combo for taking screenshots. Certainly, after freezing it, the Power+Home combo no longer works for taking screenshots.

I have just tried this but I still have the issue. Sometimes the power button won't wake up the screen and sometimes when I power off the screen it only stays off for a second and then lights up again.
I have this issue too, but I don't think it is software related problem.
It is, as the phone sometimes recognize a power button click as 2 clicks (screen goes off and on).
To see what I mean, go to Recovery and try to navigate through menus - when you're clicking power to enter any menu, sometimes you jump back, as if you were clicking "Go back"...
So, if the issue is even in Recovery mode, so it is not software related. I even restored my stock 2.3.3. soft and the issue is still there. I think it's a mechanical defect

I have noticed this too now in recovery.
Same here, I never had this issue before, but now after upgrading to this new 2.3.4, I'm having the same issue .

The strange thing is, I even downgraded to 2.3.3 and I still have the problem. I have even flashed stock HBOOT and Recovery but the problem remains. I just don't understand it because it certainly wasn't happening before I upgraded.
Add one more person to the screenshot-club. Haven't had any other problems, but sometimes the phone just keeps taking screenshots when I'm pressing the home key. Extremely annoying, but luckily this is usually solved by tapping the power button. Ofc afterwards you have to clean your gallery of useless pictures... Argh!

I use a rooted sensation and I have experienced that same problem on one ROM. If the problem is really that bad, try going the rooted way.

[Q] NS4G - power button stuck

Last night I noticed that pressing the power button on my phone no longer did anything. Thinking that maybe the phone had somehow become frozen, I pulled the battery and put it back in. Much to my surprise, the phone came on all by itself without me having to do anything. It seems that somehow the power button got stuck in the "pushed" position even though I can still push it like normal.
I have managed to work around the issues for now thanks to some features of Cyanogenmod (I can now wake the phone up using the volume keys and lock by tapping a widget in the notification area), but I'm wondering what caused this and if it's something that could be easily fixed.
Has anyone else ever experienced something like this or does anyone know how I could go about fixing the issue?

Hi, take a look here:

and here

Anyway, someone solve this problem opening the nexus s and manually cleaning the power button. Here a guide to open your device if you want to try:

Opening my ns and cleaning it did the trick for me. Worth a try, your warranty is void now anyway

[Q] Phone won't wake sometimes - 5.02

Hey guys,
I flashed my OnePlus One to 5.02 (TimOs) and it has been working alright for now (ignoring the somewhat reduced internet speed) but now I've noticed that every 15-20 unlocks, it just won't unlock. I can hold down the power button and eventually it will reboot or wait for around 30-60s and eventually the screen will turn on.
I have tap to wake enabled but neither the power button nor the double tap wakes the phone.
Anyone got any suggestions as to why this might be happening?
Thanks

This happens in some specific ROMs,flash another and it should be gone.
I've tried 2 ROMs, it always happens, only on lollipop though.

Did you try from official CMmod webpage?
How did you flashed your ROMs,dirty install or clean?
I havent tried official one yet no, might give that a try later.
Clean install, wiped everything.
I heard that it could be something to do with the proximity sensor?

Question Smart Lock randomly stops working

I have my Smart Lock enabled on my phone with my watch as a trusted device, and several times a day it randomly stops working. Rebooting fixes it for a while.
Anyone one else experiencing this and have found a fix?
I read on Reddit that the March security update broke something and there is no fix yet.
I try to go into it and it doesn't give me any options to add devices, places, or anything like that.
Wonder if this may be one reason why some are having troubles...

Try pressing Power + Volume up to bring up the power menu, then press lockdown. Enter your screen lock code and then hopefully your smart lock options should be available again. It worked whne this happened to me.

That worked. Thanks!
Thx, had this same problem on my 6a, even after upgrading to April update.
But honestly I always have some kind of issue with Smart Lock...
The reason why Google doesn't allow this when connected to a trusted WiFi network is beyond my understanding...
Have issues with Smart Lock all the time. Have it set so that my phone remains unlocked at home and in the car and it really only seems to work 50% of the time which is just annoying.
