[Q] Google voice integration into hangouts - ONE Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So this, might be a CM question, but has anyone using google voice on a stock rom seen the integration message in the updated google hangouts app "Migrate google voice to hangouts"? I've gotten the update, but I haven't seen the message as of yet and was just curious if the CM voice+ thing was interfering with it.

Thanks

I'm not using an OPO, but I do have my # ported to Google Voice. I have yet to see the message. I was reading a blurb on PhoneArena that the transition is not going too smoothly. I'd recommend to wait a bit, and let Google sort it all out.

My thoughts exactly, hoping they sort everything out as well. I have my Google Voice number and my regular number. I actually use both for different sets of people since Google Voice can't do international calling. To accomplish this took some fiddling though. I have Hangouts set to my default sms app, and Voice+ option disabled, this way the two environments stay separate. Otherwise all messages would be sent from either one or the other number completely.
Ideally would love to run everything through Hangouts with the option to choose how the communication is sent: phone's number, gv number, or hangout (the way it is now in how you can choose sms or hangout). Can't be an easy thing they're doing trying to integrate everything.

I have been waiting a long time for this. I hadn't seen that droid life article, thanks zephik. Hopefully they flip the switch back on soon. I use my GV number exclusively, so this integration is a godsend.

Hehe droid life is a pretty good site. They have some exclusives here and there. My main android blogs are AndroidPolice, droid life, and Android central. Mainly AndroidPolice though.

[REQ] Vlingo InCar apk

Wasnt sure exactly where to post this. The new app from Vlingo, "Vlingo InCar" is in beta, and only available through the market for sprint customers during the beta period.
Could one of you kind evo users post up the apk for the rest of the android community? Thanks!
Best of luck with it! I love it so far!

What does this do that you cannot do with the new google voice program?

When you put it in "InCar" mode you can say "Hey Vlingo" to wake it up and use voice commands.
FYI, this works on the VZW with the Incredible with no problem..

Also, it works! The new Google program is about 1/10 in getting what I say right.
Vlingo is (so far) about 5/5. I like that if it doesn't find what you're saying locally, it does a (very fast) internet search.
any word on making it work for other android devices? ie the g-1

Works great on the dinc. I appreciate the share!
thank you so much for sharing this app with the community. I have been fooling around with it for half an hour or so and it does some pretty awesome things. LOVE the in-car feature, completely hands-free and works perfectly, even reads and writes text messages for me. "hey vlingo"
Edit: Forgot to add, very accurate, even with names
Wow, the incar mode is really REALLY good. Anybody know how to have it differentiate between a contacts home and cell when sending a text message?
Say call blah blah mobile. That should work.

Google's voice search sucked at recognizing what I was saying for the first week or so, but then it got a lot better. I'm wondering if it learns your voice or something. Vlingo, on the other hand, worked well on day one. However, while it does a good job of recognizing what I am saying, it doesn't always give me the results I wanted. For instance, movie times never come up even though that's one of the examples the app shows, and it displays my exact phrase correctly (movie times near #####). It just says "No answer found". And I've also had trouble getting it to dial the right phone number for a contact. It's like it ignores when I say "mobile."
I'm having the same problem. It ignores when I say "mobile" after the contacts name. My g/f is getting irritated with the text to landline messages that repeat "test" lol
Is it necessary to install the standard Vlingo app before installing the incar pack?
I´ve been trying to download the installer but i still cant find it, it´s not in the market either.
It would be much if I ask to share the installer?

? It's in the second post of this thread.
anyway to successfully have this running in the background with the in-car? Currently it seems that the program has to be on main screen for me to say "Hey Vlingo" and it wakes...
Plus..too bad I cant say Jarvis to have it wake up
Instead of 'mobile' try saying 'cell'.

Right now the best way is to make two contacts for the person and label one cell and one home after the name. Best workaround at the moment.

Yeah, I went ahead and did that the other day, but thanks! Hopefully that will get sorted.
It would be nice if you could ask it to use your GV # by default as well.
i wonder if there is any way to train a contact that it gets wrong every time. Wifes name is tricky and unless i use her last name first it misses it every time.

[Q] Google Voice: Nobody's mentioned it, but I can't be the only one.

i.imgur.com/UAiIU.png
I am a heavy user of Google Voice, which I have on my Nexus One.
I cannot see GVoice on the Market from my Asus Transformer TF101.
When I browse to the Market from my desktop or mobile browser, it shows up of course, but says "this item is not compatible with your device" while referring to my Transformer.
Is this a honeycomb thing, or could it be an Asus thing?
I refuse to believe (unless you tell me that it is so) that Google would make Honeycomb somehow incompatible with the Google Voice app... That seems unimaginable to me.
While I have searched this forum thoroughly (I hope), I have not found any other mention of this issue, which makes me think that perhaps I am part of the problem... am I doing something wrong? Can anyone else confirm that GVoice is not available on the Transformer? Is anyone else as upset by this as I am?
(PS- I know I can browse to the voice webpage but that does not do push notifications. )
It's a google voice thing. It's dependent on telephony services, which the TF doesn't have. Google Voice team says they're working on it though, so expect something by the turn of the century.
Haha, oh how very lame! I do hope that they come out with something soon... I see no actual reasonwwhy Google Voice should not run on a wi-fi only tablet, right?
Thank you for the info!

All good, just trying to prevent duplicate threads on the same topic.. Anyways, GrooVe IP does work well, I use it on my phone so all my calls are minute-free. And, the Google Voice APK listed does work, but the main reason I mentioned searching is that on my thread I linked to the original Google Voice APK maker's thread where there are already newer versions than the one posted here. For your convenience, here is the most recent hacked version that should work on the TF: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=13545805&postcount=172
Thank you immensely for that; I have the new version now, and it's roxing my sox off.

No need to use a paid app....
a) Sign up for a free SIP account at sip2sip.info
b) Sign up at ipkall.com to get a free US phone number to direct to your SIP account
c) Install sipdroid from the market and log into your sip2sip account
d) Install Google Voice. Add your ipkall number to your Google voice account.
e) You're done. Now you can make unlimited ingoing and outgoing calls for free.

No need to sign up for 4 different services just to make a phone call either . You prefer entirely free. I prefer a one time fee for ease of use.
I appreciate both options; thanks guys!
My only issues with GrooveIP is that you have to log out of google talk to receive calls, which disables remote app installs from the market. Also, it is forced to portrait with tiny buttons.

I did not notice such an issue. I just don't log in to google talk though - and I've been able to remote install apps. the portrait thing is annoying, but usable.
This version of Google Voice that is linked, it's a rather old version and it only refreshes the inbox every 5 minutes at the "quickest". I tried moving the google voice over from my Thunderbolt to my Transformer but it wouldn't install.
Does anyone have the "new" version of GVoice that uses background data to sync the inbox instead of having to wait 5 minutes for it to "catch up"?

Can XOOM 3G make Voice call like a mobile phone

Can any one advise this as its not listen in the 3G Specs..
By default no, but there has been talks about possibly getting it to work and a lot of people have success getting Line2 (https://market.android.com/details?id=com.toktumi.line2&feature=search_result) to work on it but requires you to even find the APK somewhere or download it on another android phone and copy the APK file off it.
I am looking for a core 2 Andriod 3.0 with at least a 7.1 or 10.1 screen...
Have to be able to make call.
Any recommendations..
I don't think you're going to find that anywhere.
Good luck with that, last I checked there were no tablets out there (at least in terms of Android 3.0+) that will allow you to make phone calls with them unless you use Skype (or mod it to allow making phone calls nativity.
I have heard that Samsung Galaxy Tab does allow you to make phone calls but I haven't tested myself and don't know if the newer Tab 10.1 (not sure if it's out yet or not) will support the phone features either since the Tab 10.1 will have 3.0.
I'm sure other members on this forums will step in to correct me if I'm wrong at anything I've said here but this is what I've saw so far.
I had some limited success with nettalk and my Google Talk phone number. Could connect with my home phone but my husband said it was very echo-y. I'm wifi only so it can be done. I'm going to try Line 2.
GrooVe IP works
i downloaded groove IP from the market tonite and it seems to work fine, it uses your Google voice number. No monthly fee like Line 2

you have to be logged out of Google talk on your xoom. Also, make sure that in your gv settings you have it set to google chat rather than your mobile number. Not sure if that made any sense, but they explain it step by step in the help section.
is that video calling or just voice?

Not really sure. When I go to google voice on my browser and then click on the setting tab in upper right corner and then choose voice settings, I can then click on the phones tab, that is where I am able to choose google chat.

I will add that my calls work a lot better for the other party when I use bluetooth.

Dang... I just remembered a long time ago I deleted the google chat from my registered phones list because I didn't think I would ever need to use it. So that would mean I would have to add it back, but... yeah. If I try to add another phone it gives me the name to choose and I need to set a number for it, and I have no idea what the number would be for google chat. Thanks for the quick responses though! I'll try and figure out what to do next. And I have 2 nice bluetooth headsets and they do work great!

The legacy Galaxy Tab does let you use a GSM sim card and allow one to make phone calls as well as access EDGE/3G data...i helped a friend set up his tab a couple of weeks ago and can confirm this....im located in Mumbai, India...and the versions available here do allow the ability to also use it as a phone..

i believe its the kernel that is stopping it from possible.
at the momenet, honeycomb is designed to be a tablet OS, hence it didn't include the Phone's feature in the system.
for galaxy tab, (the older one), it running on Gingerbread which a Phone OS, hence it can be easily enable the phone feature.
i believe we need to wait till Ice Cream where it unite Gingerbread and Honeycomb, so that it has the phone's feature in the system and can be enabled easily.
Hey All
Just thought I'd add to this old topic. I have an Australian 3G Xoom, on the American 3.1 update, with my settings pushed back for 3G etc.
Tonight I installed the UAString/SMS mod, so that I could send SMSes (which work perfectly with Handcent, over the Telstra 3G network - just like any mobile phone would do). Then I tried calling my tablet. This also worked perfectly! The call came up, it connected, etc. I answered and this is where we hit trouble. No sound. Either way. So the Xoom doesn't have a microphone/speaker set up for sound during a call. I even tried setting the Xoom on speaker phone, but still nothing.
Any ideas? Not sure if this has been posted about before, and I thought it was pretty exciting, to be making normal calls, and SMSes (there is all this talk about Google Voice, which is useless outside of the US) on the Xoom, and this was very exciting for me.

Google Now - Working for me!

This maybe was discussed somewhere else, but I didn't see a thread on it so figured I'd start one.
I've installed Google Now on my rig running full stock (rooted) rom and it's running fine. I did get some network error messages at first, but I assumed it was a result of the permission requests it was tossing at me. Once I allowed the permissions, things seemed to work just fine.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1749045
FYI - Just read that to get the full benefit of google now you must have web history and location history enabled. It'll work without it, but won't provide its full benefit without it.
That said, I guess I won't really be using it much. A choice y'all will have to make. Here's the link:

Is voice working for you and did it break svoice when u double tap home? Thanks for the info
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda premium
Voice did not work for me.
Double tap of home gave you the option to choose s voice or search. I defaulted to search and when I double clicked home nothing happened.
I kept getting network errors even though I have both location and search history enabled. I could get weather and Olympic results quickly but when I searched for say "galaxy S3 news" it would sit there loading. I reverted back to stock search.
How to revert: uninstall velvet. Rename the apk for Google quick search. No reboot required.
My phone is verizon stock rooted with noxious ninjas script.
Voice didn't work for me either. One note: don't "install" velvet.apk, push it to system/app instead.
Also, for some reason it kept telling me units in SI instead of US. I reverted because I like voice search. Didn't try disabling the S Voice stuff which I saw may help.

There are several things that don't work for me.
As previously mentioned, voice searching is broken.
On my xoom the Google now app displays card such as weather, traffic, and sports scores when I open it without doing any searches. This function does not work.
Also, I get notifications from Google now on the xoom. The app is integrated in the os. None of this works on the s3.
Pretty much all you will get is a replacement of the current search app that will display cards for some results using text input only. It is not worth it to switch right now. If you are curious about how Google now works, just search for demo videos.

it's now fully functional (including voice). there's another post floating around with instructions.
thanks for sharing this! everything works fine!
Can someone point me in the direction of the fully working version? I installed yesterday and there were a bunch of problems.
Here's the "fully" working version:

I say "fully" because at least for me, nothing relating to the calendar works. Doesn't see my existing appointments, can't add new ones. Voice search works fine.
So I got it installed on my Verizon S3.
I don't see a Now app in my drawer but do get it when I press the home screen mic button and can voice search and all of that works well. Set an alarm etc.
I don't see any cards though and I don't have google now settings in the google search app to change from metric etc. I flashed M6 - Mikeyxda's version 6 online/offline. I didn't install anything else. Did I miss something?
Also double clicking the home button now brings up the voice dialer, how can that be changed?
Thanks in advance!

Cool, thanks. I am concerned that I don't get the settings to change from metric in the search app too.
I realize though I should be patient and wait for google to "award" me cards and then I might get the weather settings I am looking for.
Voice Dialer is messed up
I installed Google Now and the search works fine. However, when I initiate the voice dialer via my BT headset, I hear very fast, unintelligible gibberish. When I say "Call Bill Johnson" it returns totally inaccurate results and the voice is at 4X speed. S Voice, while somewhat inaccurate, worked 80-90% of the time via BT.
Does anyone else who has done this on their S3 have a working BT initiated voice dialer?
Where are my cards!

So I guess it's been 4 or 5 days since I flashed M6 - Mikeyxda's version 6 and I still don't have any cards. I have been using Now daily to search for weather updates and sports scores from my main teams and no cards every show up when I open the app from the blue google icon. I have never seen anything in the app actually say Google Now, I just get the red mic to ask the question.
Did I miss something or maybe have a bad install? Any suggestions to try?

Figured my problem out. It was because I have a google apps (for business) account. I had to enable at settled in my domain management to permit google now for my users (aka me).
I then cleared the Google Search Apps data and cashe and reopened it and got the welcome to Google Now setup screen.

So do we just install the M7 apk or do we need to push it to system apps? Is that the only file we need to install? Any help appreciated. Want to try Clean Rom 2.5 but want to make sure I can get Google Now working first.

It depends on which recovery your using if it acts right with it...if you flash it and it dont show up then you have to manually install it which the instructions on how to do so is in that OP
Might be a questioned already answered. I just got my s3 a few days ago, but does google navigation work with google now. I installed the m7 online/offline version but it just sits there. Voice search, cards, everything else works but turn by turn navigation.:cyclops:

Google Voice 0.3.0 Galaxy S3 ICS 4.0.4

**UPDATE** I MADE IT WORK
Hey, I'm not sure if there is an answer to this...
I just got my GS3 and love it! However, Google Voice 0.3.0 (ya'll know why I love it) crashes on the ICS 4.0.4 platform. I have been using
Voice+ but I just don't like the call back feature. I have also found a smart gv dialer that automatically decides between gv and the cell carrier based upon certain rules but it still takes a while to complete the calling card style dial through.
YES, I WANT MY CAKE AND TO EAT IT TOO!!! or in this case my ice cream sandwich I know with the unlimited plans floating around most people don't care anymore. I have an OLD OLD OLD plan that is grandfathered in with unlimited data so I don't want to give it up.
My question is, does anyone know of a fix for the app crash that worked fine in 2.2. Or has anyone "recompiled" the app to work in ICS?
Thanks for any help...
THE ANSWER!!!
UPDATE:
Yay! I know it doesn't seem like much for some but those of us still using our trusty f&f plans this is big.
I hope this helps someone out there who found that the old GV 0.3.0 app would hang up and crash as soon as you touched next on the new ICS 4.0.4.
If you want to have the old GV 0.3.0 on ICS 4.0.4, follow these steps:
1. Install newest version of GV from play store.
2. Open GV and touch next but do not choose the displayed gmail account touch USE A DIFFERENT ACCOUNT (this is the only way to get this
to work!)
3. Type in your Gmail address and your password (I know it is the same one that was displayed on the previous page... THIS IS THE ONLY
WAY TO GET IT TO WORK!) Touch sign in.
4. Choose how you want GV to dial and whether or not you want to set up the GV Voicemail.
5. Now, download the old GV 0.3.0 apk here: http://www.freewarelovers.com/androi...oice_0.3.0.apk
Thank you www.freewarelovers.com!!
6. Make sure Install from Unknow Sources is selected under the security tab in your settings menu.
7. Open the Google_Voice_0.3.0.apk file (Look in your apps and touch Downloads to get to the downloaded files)
8. You will get a message that you are replacing an application and that all previous user data will be saved. Touch OK.
9. Touch Install.
Now you should have a working GV 0.3.0 apk that will allow you to call through GV utilizing only one access number place this number in your F&F list and make outgoing calls for free!
*Disclaimer - Although this works you may want to review your TOS to see if this violates your carriers terms for Friends and Family numbers.
If this helped you please show my thanks meter some love!

Gv works fine for me. Are you still stock or on a custom rom? Fresh gv download from play?

GV works for me as well, I only use it for voicemails but I haven't had any odd issues. Btw, why are you on an older version? The app hasn't been updated since March but it's on build 0.4.2.54. I definitely suggest using the above users' suggestions.

The reason for gv 0.3.0 is because this is the last version that does not use direct access numbers. It only uses one number for direct dialing out. Which means I can assign the one number to my f&f list.

yes, i asked this some time ago. but your reasoning for liking version 0.3.0 is moot. theres ways to get it working like you want on the latest version.
Yay, I figured it out!
Check my very first post in this thread for the answer!
I decided that was the best place to move the info to keep it from being buried.
Thank you!

I know it is fairly moot, I said almost the same thing in my original post. However, some of us don't like change. Also, I only have 500 minutes for my wife and I to share (makes our plan really cheap) but we do have F&F numbers. Generally the callback dialers don't put the outgoing number in the history and it takes 5 seconds or so to connect to the outgoing call (also fairly moot for the use of free calling).

Oh im sorry I think you misunderstood what I meant. The way you describe above didnt work for me, I still got force closed when launching GV after installing the older version. You can search here and see the thread regarding that.
What I meant was, there is a simple way to use the new version of google voice that allows for dialing one number only so that your friends and family list can have that one number in it still. I like the look of the new version personally, I would like a black themed one though so I may look for that later.
A side note, the new plans include unlimited voice anyways so it only really matters if you arent on one of the new plans.

First, what is your problem? Did you not read my posts or just like to come and insert your conjecture wherever you can? I stated I have a CHEAP plan with only 500 minutes. I pay $89/mo for two smartphones with unlimited data, TRY TO BEAT THAT PRICE!
Second, if you merely select the gmail account linked to your phone on the first set-up screen then it wont work. You must use the "use a different account option." Then yes, you manually type in the same gmail address that is more than likely the gmail address you use to link your android phone to google. This is the way that the old google voice app stores your user data and will allow the old gv app to work. Plus, there is no way to make the new gv app stop dialing direct access numbers.
Feel free to offer the way you "know" it can only dial one access number and I would be more than happy to try the new gv app.
UPDATE: Furthermore I have looked at all of your posts concerning this issue and you have not offered a single solution towards the problem nor explained work arounds you tried or how they failed or worked.

you are being way to hostile. I AM IN THE SAME BOAT AS YOU, I have 1400 minutes with a family plan. I am however fortunately on unlimited data. So I dont know what you mean by "insert your conjecture". I will beat it because I pay $150 for 5 lines and have unlimited data on at least 2 of the lines. So I understand the value of friends and family lists.
The "Second , if you merely select... " way doesnt work in all/most cases. I have discussed this in another thread that I had locked because there was no interest in this. The way I came up with works consistently.
I wasnt being confrontational to you, I even apologized that you misunderstood what I was saying. I will say it again too, sorry if what I was saying came across differently then what I said. I have tried your way on multiple phones repeatedly and kept getting force close. That is how I figured this other way that actually works on the new version of the app.
Still no help

Still you offer no solution... prove that you know how!
Or are you still "gauging demand?"

no thanks, for someone being so hostile why would anyone want to share with you. you could of searched and easily seen the post I made a month ago about this and that it works but instead you rack up 7 posts boasting something new and being a jerk, as if no one else has ever thought of this. Theres other users that have pm'd me and I've helped them get this working properly on the new app version.
Right on for getting it to work because thats the goal really. But when you see that it doesnt work on all google voice accounts, you might want to rethink your responses.
p.s. good job searching after posting. No I am not gauging demand, I've helped people in pm because of WHY google voice calls a different out number each time normally.

I actually came to this conclusion as I started to reply the last time and have simply ignored him. My apologies. I am new to forum posting and had no idea what was really out there. I was just surprised and allowed my competitive spirit to get the better of me. I just have a hard time understanding why people make uneducated statements off of half reading a post. There will be no more exchanges between me and him.

Sorry kennyglass, not trolling at all. In fact, I took a second to think about the google voice app functionality and this thread. There is a reason Google changed the app from the old version to new version and why it dials random multiple numbers. So, posting in public how to circumvent that might not be the best idea, especially if we want it to continue to function with one number dialing.
You can look that there is no less then 3 threads related to this subject that I posted over the past couple months.
1. How to check compatibility with older version of google voice app to ICS and the SGS3
2. How google voice apps functions and why one gv account dials a single number while others dial multiple numbers (when setup the same with the same versions of apps)
3. How to get it working and the interest of others wanting to know how to do it with the newest version of the app.
You just have to search before starting a new thread.
This isnt where I just saw a random thread in General and said lets mess with the guy, NO, in fact this has been a couple months in the making where I tested, asked questions, tested more, then figured out how to do it. As I said before, it might not be the best idea to post how to do it on the newest version of the app where it works on every gv account (not just some). I have helped many others already on how to do it privately as I am not sure I want google to discover this and stop it. Surely you know that google did this at the pressure of the Cellular providers?
The kind, not so negative people that want help have figured out that they can simply pm me and I'll help. Also, I wasnt flaming, trolling, nor was I even negative. I complimented the OP for figuring out a way that works for him. I even apologized TWICE for any misunderstanding, but I didnt feel to much like sharing publicly after being told what is your problem or to prove it... would you?
maybe people shouldnt read 'tone' on the internet, reading doesnt always translate to tone well..........
and to note the half read posts comment, it is hard to reply to a post that is edited over and over, hence the ORIGINAL quote, to inform the reader what was being commented on.
Thanks for the PM tillithz. The process was simple and easy and it works.
Since, I came up with a way that works 100% of the time without using an OLD version and I am happily helping others get it working as well, I will link to the ORIGINAL thread so that I dont ruffle any feathers here. You can either use the OP'ers method with the old version of the app or visit http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=31936430#post31936430 for a current method. enjoy!
Trying to use a different google account, and then using my same name and password didn't work. It said that user already existed. So I was forced to sign in using my main google account. Went through the rest of the steps and everything appears to work, I was able to install GV 0.3 and open it up. Although it doesn't appear to actually function. It won't download my new messages, for instance. Any help?
I was able to make this trick work by installing google voice version 0.4.2.54 along with google voice version 0.3.0. Thanks for the great trick! Its very usefulx for those of us on a legacy plan.
