AOKP/CM Kernel - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello all,
Very grateful for any help at all. I just flashed the latest AOKP nightly (20140907 v4.4.4) onto my Nexus 5 and I'm looking for a kernel that supports USB FastCharge (the default kernel, 3.4.0 Cyanogenmod g186e370r1 does not). So far I've tried:
Franco r63
Code Blue r350
TeamAT Next v0.10 & v0.11b
Flashing any of these results in failed boot (hung at initial 'google' boot screen). Thankfully it's easy enough to restore 'boot' and start over.
I've learned that I need a CM/CAF kernel but the last few I tried still fail to boot.
I *really* love my fastcharge option...but I'm running out of options...
Any suggestions?

Different rom.

If you need CAF, chaos and elementalx are kernels you should try. Been ages since I've used chaos but in use the AOSP version of elementalx so I can say that has fastcharge for sure.

Can't Flash Kernels

So I lost my phone, got a new one, rooted using the casual root/unlock w/twrp method found on this forum http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=2332825
Is it possible to somehow improperly root/unlock without bricking? Or that I just got a bad download. I am having random reboots with just about every kernel I flash, some worse than others. I can only run the stock kernel. Running a clean 2.9 and the latest TWRP. Would it be useful to do a full wipe and "reroot/unlock"
What rom are you using and what kernels are you trying to flash?

Right, sorry. Liquid 2.9..tried flashing multiple builds of BMS, a few lk builds, dkp, and team kernalizer kernel. I think that's all of the available kernels for the s3

Well, I follow AOSP kernel development a little bit. If I were you, I'd start by flashing a kernel built within seven days of July 20th cuz it seems every two to three weeks, kernel commits render older roms useless. If you don't follow AOSP commits in the more popular rom or kernel threads then I suggest staying away from custom kernels cuz they move quickly. Custom AOSP kernels built on 8/13 won't work on older roms for example.
Edit: I got July 20th cuz LiquidSmooth was last updated on July 20th btw. Just to be clear.
Good advice. I don't follow the aosp commits but I did have the same thought and flashed an older version of BMS (I really want to give it some burn) didn't work... I'll try an older build of lk too just to see where I am.
Really hoping 4.3 somehow resolves this issue for me.
Thanks for your help.

Hope so too. I'm trying out Slim Bean beta 2 with BMS kernel from 8/15 and it's working great performance wise. I'd even suggest trying newer 4.3 rooms (CM, Unofficial CM, PA, etc) just for a couple hours and trying your hand with a custom kernel from 8/13 or newer. Or trying a newer 4.2.2 nightly with a custom kernel. For BMS, I believe GideonX said that 7/30 is the last JB 4.2.2 kernel he's made.
How long would you say you waited before flashing the kernel? I usually flash rom, reinstall my apps, set up home screens, then flash a kernel. Maybe 20 minutes between rom and kernel flash cuz of habit.

[Q] CM11 and gamma settings

Hello! I have recently installed the CyanogenMod 11 M3. I've noticed that the option for display gamma settings aren't integrated, so I tried to install Franco's kernel in order to use his Nexus Display Control apk. The problem is that, despite Franco's kernel should be compatible with CM11, after flashing it the phone doesn't boot and freezes on Google logo.
Do I have another option to set display gamma? Otherwise how can I install and use Nexus Display Control apk? tnks
Hi,
With the last CM Franco kernel doesn't work (for now) since CM have indroduced some changes.
If you want to use the app you need a kernel that supports the same gamma control interface as Franco...
You can try this kernel for example, compatible with CM and with colour control: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2551441, it has its own app, don't know if Nexus Display will work with this kernel...
Franko does not work with cm11 or any CAF rom. You'll need to find a CAF kernel that does what you want it to.

What does "CAF" mean?

Code aurora forum. It's coding that cm has moved to.

I've successfully flashed the Chaos Kernel and used the N5 Gamma Calibration apk. It works, but it is everything but user-friendly. Hope someone will develop something more intuitive.

Back from my note 3 endeavors. Red nexus 5 running cm11. Kernel recommend?

Hey back from playing with the note 3 the past few months. Running cm11 on my red nexus right now but I've fallen off the kernel game. Any recommendations? I remember running Mahdi ROM with a experimental x kernel. Looking to oc this a little bit
Just look for the features you want. Find the features because otherwise, they're all good.

and its cm, so it has to be a cm compatible or CAF kernel. aosp kernels will not work on cm.
Just flashed cm caf experimental express and all is well. Thanks guys
Come on dude.. At least say the name correctly.. It's ElementalX

I am having difficulty getting Franco Kernel to work, I just get a constant boot loading screen and have to force shut down, anyone know of any issues?
Cleared cache and dalvik before and after install and am using the right version for my device.
Same here
Flashing Franco's Kernel R24 and R42 for OPO resulted in hanging boot on logo. Reflash full rom and apps fixed it. But unable to flash Franco Kernel.

how to check which version of Kernel I'm using?

Hello guys,
I'm new to Nexus 5 as well.
I have been using Chroma for few months now/
http://forum.xda-developers.com/google-nexus-5/development/rom-chroma-03-31-2015-layers-t3069105
The version I installed on mine is: 8-10-2015 built.
I have been following the post lately,
many people said, 'franco.Kernel' is a good Kernel.
how do I check if I already have franco kernel installed?
I went to About page, it says: 3.4.0-gbebb36b [email protected]#1
also,
if I want to go with franco kernel, what advantages will i get?
do i just need to download this app thru google play to install the franco kernel?

That is stock kernel. Recommend using blu_spark (aka code_blue) over franco.kernel. I won't say FK is abandoned, and it is a good kernel, but it's just not updated for the N5 much anymore. Same thing happened to the N7 2013. When the devs move on, you should also.
What do you get with a custom kernel? They say battery, performance, etc. Most of it is negligible at best. You'll need to read the kernel OPs.
hello,
thank you for your reply.
which kernal are you using for your nexus 5 right now?

I use elementalx. It is pretty much stock, but you can mod things. The dev's app is great, too.

Chroma used Franco as the built-in kernel in the past but zephik keeps Google's kernel for a few months.

Better battery life? Negligible.
New features like color control, governors (highest impact on battery life), S2W, DT2W, USB fast charge... It varies for each kernel.

I suggest you to read (again & again) the kernel threads on XDA before flashing anything. Franco is a well known kernel but we have other awesome kernels.
so my nexus 5 is stuck on the bootloop or the chroma logo...
I flashed:
1) chroma_hammerhead-ota-2015-10-05.zip
2) tk_gapps-modular-nano-5.1.1-20150927-signed.zip
then the nexus 5 was able to boot fine, and I saw the phone already has SuperSU came with the Chroma ROM
3) I went ahead download the BusyBox, and installed
4) reboot to recovery , and flashed blu_spark_r30-6.0_hammerhead_40fbe53.zip
my phone is not stuck on the ChromaLogo .....
I have also tried,, on the step 3, I flashed without installing Busybox.. It's a no go either..
any help would be appreciated..
Thanks
