All,
I've tried CM11 and MoKee 4.4.4 roms and both are great except for extremely weak reception and GPS. The GPS does lock in the open but if I was to drive under a few trees, I lose GPS. Also, the reception is very weak in areas where the stock ROM would have full bars 4G LTE. Anybody else run into these problems? I'm back to Verizon 4.4.2 for now. Honestly, I don't see any advantage to the AOSP roms out there other than that it comes customized so I don't need to run xposed which allows me to use ART runtime.
Johnny
Having the same issues on my Razr HD, JJBL on CM11-20140902...
Did you find a solution?
Nope, was hoping someone had a solution. Running stock rooted, xposed and happy but wished I can run AOSP just to give Verizon the middle finger.

I live and work in an area that has poor signal for Verizon. I almost immediately flashed to CM 10 after I got the Verizon Galaxy S3 because I was running CM 10 on my previous Sprint Galaxy S3 without issue. I have been updating the radio and RPM with each leak (currently running K3) and things got a little better but I constantly dropped calls. I had to flash back to stock because I flashed to CM 10.1 and my radio got messed up. I ran the newest stock rom for the last week and noticed a huge difference. I still had low signal but my data dropped less frequently and I could actually make phone calls in areas I couldn't before.
I rooted, and flashed to CM 10.1 and noticed right away the signal is not where it should be. I can't make phone calls inside of buildings with low signal at all, where with stock I could without issue. I love CyanogenMod but I don't think I can deal with the poor signal.
Any ideas on what could be causing this problem and maybe a possible resolution?

Depends on where ya live, your mileage may vary. I get within 1-2 -dBm between the two.
Technically since we don't have the source code the reason CM10 has data is by a work around.
There really is nothing you can do. It is what it is. I've run devices with CM that have provided better signal, and usually were on sprint lol and then run them where they provide the same or slightly worse quality.
Happens.

This does not ha e anything to do with cm 10. This this to do with the the phone radio. This is the reason why I switched to the DNA now I have Full bars everywhere I go. On my s3 I used to drop calls all the time.

Ok I really hope I'm not beating the dead horse here but I have a similar problem on my verizon Galaxy s3 and I was hoping there might be a fix
My understanding is that the CM developers dont have the GS3 source for something (the RIL?) so they have to use a different RIL? I'm probably totally butchering that, because I dont understand the words I'm using, but from what I've gathered the signal is what it is on CM, and will not improve beyond where it is.
It is certainly usable for me, but there are many times my wife has 4g and I have 3g, or she has a 3g signal and I have nothing at all (she has a stock vzw gs3).

I think you're correct on the RIL part.
I had the same issue on 10.1. I switched to an older radio, and though it is not perfect, it did give me better reception and the switch from 3g to 4g is faster. My radio is VRLHE
Why not try a rom like beans. It is a touch wiz rom that looks like aosp and had a lot of aosp features. That way the radios will work fine you will still have aosp stuff and all the goodness of being rooted.

Let's not get confused here. Tw rom's like beans are themed to look slightly aosp, but are far from it. Aosp has so many customization options that tw cannot come close to. (I'm an aosp guy, if you can't tell). That being said, signal strength will always be an issue on aosp based roms due to the Samsung ril only being licensed to samsung, hence only working on tw rom's. The official ril code will almost never be released as its how qualcom makes its money. Currently aosp rom's use a work around home brewed ril that is very effective, but not quite what stock rom will offer. So if your signal is poor where you are, aosp may not be the best choice for you, but for most the signal is just as good as tw, and imo the only way to run android.

I'm not confused, that's why I said looks like (aka themed like). Also I said some aosp features like MMS, camera/gallery, lock screen to name a few. Its no where near the same but if they are having issues which I read a few people do have with signal and losing data its a nice alternative and has SOME similar features.

I just upgraded from a Samsung Galaxy Nexus to a Samsung Galaxy S3, and just curious why everyone is still making/releasing 4.1.2 based ROMs when 4.2.2 has been available for so long?
Having come from running 4.2.2 on my Nexus, I was used to it, so the first think I did was unlock, root and get AOKP 4.2.2 on here. It runs flawlessly and everything works, so just hoping to get some insight on why all the ROMs in the dev section are old.
Thank you
Because many of the roms in development are based off Samsung's touchwiz software, which itself is based on 4.1.2 still. For 4.2.2 roms based off AOSP, most of them can be found in original development.
Basically the difference in versions is due to
Touchwiz: Google -> Samsung -> verizon -> devs
AOSP: Google -> devs
And aosp roms camcorder has extremely low volume recording so having kids I unfortunately cant use aosp even though I really want to.

Not quite everything works on an AOSP 4.2.x ROM. The radio interface layer (RIL) software for the GS3 has not been released by Samsung, the radio software used for all AOSP ROMs is reverse-engineered and is not quite as good as the original Samsung software. Your signal strength will not be quite as good using AOSP, though you may or may not notice a difference depending on coverage where you live.
More importantly, the GS3's world phone capabilities are not fully working with the AOSP RIL, I believe you can put a GSM SIM in the phone and make calls/texts, but not get data service. So if you travel internationally and want to use a local SIM to get data, you'll want to stick with a ROM based on the latest Samsung software, which unfortunately is still based on 4.1.2.
I'm happy to hear if either of those things have changed recently, it's been a little while since I looked into it. The only reason I don't use AOSP ROMs right now is because of the RIL issue, I need my phone to work as a phone first and foremost and that means going with something based on stock Samsung software. Of course, if neither of those things bother you, use what you like.
Hmm, weird. I have no call issues, and am getting 20MB/10MB on 4G LTE for data speeds, same as I did on my Nexus running AOKP build 6 (Android 4.2.2). Even the number of bars is the same, and more bars near my office than before with my Nexus (may be due to better radio hardware though). Also, I tested audio on video recording, and hear no difference in the videos I took on my Nexus. I also have kids, and the test I did was whispering to full talking from 5ft away - hear everything.
Weird. Guess I'll just keep using it since it's working for me.

Different strokes for different folks. Personally I like many of the features of Touchwiz (The samsung camera app among others) but hate the way it looks so I use beans 4.1.2 builds. I was on AOSP 4.2.2 for a while but had isseus with the gps not tracking my runs properly and the low recording volume really got to me.
I've found that most AOSP builds leave me wanting. AOKP has never disappointed me; across devices.
If you had good reception with the Nexus...well, that speaks volumes. You're not anywhere near a fringe area. If you have great 4g, the Nexus worked great and AOSP roms on GS3 work great.
Where I live, there are a bunch of fringe areas and a lot of handshaking between 4g and 3g. The Nexus....I had to return it immediately. TERRIBLE reception. The GS3 with AOSP was a little better...but not much. When I'm sitting beside my wife with a rooted GS3 running Cleanrom, and I'm running CM10.1 and I have no signal and she has 4g...well, it gets frustrating. lol.
But I'm glad it's working for you...wish I could run 4.2.2...stupid RIL.
For those having GPS problems, have you done this?: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2201668
I much prefer the pure Google experience. when I had an HTC I hated Sense. When I had a Motorola I hated Motoblur. I didn't see any reason to learn to like TouchWiz
Also, I think I am blessed with my geographical area. I can travel 45 minutes from one side of my home city to the other and still have 4-5 bars on LTE.
New to posting on here, so be patient... I have been flashing roms however since the Motorola droid 1 and love the mods we can do to our phones. Now I have a Samsung Galaxy S3, flashed to CleanRom, newest version as of this date. I love the battery life on this Rom but work near the Mexican border where it easily switches to roaming. My question is that on CM roms I'm able to go into roaming settings and select either Automatic (default) or Home Only which will prevent anything but a Verizon signal. Works awesome. I don't know why this is unique to CM or AOSP roms and not touch wiz. Is there a way we can have that added or even an app that will do that very thing? Sometimes I have to just backup my rom and flash CM just to use my phone without roaming on to the Mexican cell tower. It's very frustrating. Thanks for any advice.
i really want to stay with a AOSP rom (CM 10.2 or Illusion 4.3) but when i go to a AOSP rom i get reall bad signal (1 bar or nothing) living in chicago on verizon. When i go with a TW rom using 4.1.2 the signal is great. currently i'm using Hyperdrive RLS15 and the signal is great get 4 or 5 bars. has any one else had similar issues?

I never had that drastic of signal issues. At my house I get poor reception. (2bars max). On TW I get 2bars. On AOSP I was only getting 1. I recently flashed Latest cm10.1.3 RC2 and my signal issues have greatly increased over prior builds.
Just my 2ยข
Also. I know the new AOSP ROMs require the new baseband MF1. Are you updated?
I get very bag signal at my work. I just switched to an aosp rom and I can actually send texts better than before. Instead of failing 8x, it only fails 2x. I'll take it though.

On the 4.3 based roms there still may be some legitimate signal /data issues.
On 4.2.2 aosp ROMs the issue is mostly cosmetic, you have the same signal, but the ROM show you less bars.
Check out signal in phone status before assuming you are getting worse signal.
There are still some issues with data handoffs in aosp, but it isn't as bad as it once had been.

Yes I'm using the latest MF1 firmware. I even reflashed the firmware and all getting bad signal with and AOSP roms. Is the something I need to do with the radio or kernel. I tried a few kernels and still same issue.

So far every new version of AOSP has had signal problems at the very beginning. Due to that fact I usually wait until the problem fixed.
I'm on Masta's unofficial CM 10.2, and my signal is all around better than my old TW ROM (Hyperdrive RLS 14/15)
If you're responding to me, make sure to quote me so I get an immediate email.
OK so I just had access to my gf's phone. I'm running PA, she's on stock tw rooted. I had both phone side by side. Both phones read the same dmb and asu. Her phone had 3 bars mine had 1. I think its safe to say that Aosp Roms just display signal different.
status
Just an update i went to Illusion's 4.2.2 and the signal is OK, i don't get drop call like i was getting when trying a 4.3 rom. so i'm going to stay with this until they get the 4.3 bugs ironed out. It just freaks me out to see only 1 bar for signal.
do any of you guys of which rom is the closest to making the GS3 to look like a GS4?
Has anyone attempted to install the base LineageOS on their Verizon m8?
If so, what was the level of success? Does everything work?

I am using LineageOS on my VZW m8. I am having issues with my data disconnecting intermittently. Everything else seems to be working fine.
So ...glad I found this thread, as I was going to create my own (though I think general might be a better place for it...I'll suggest to mods).
Hopefully this can be a good place for all of us VZW M8 users to discuss our LOS experiences.
I just started looking for a new ROM after months of hating the stock MM update. I'm hoping to get another year or so out of my M8.
So far I have narrowed it down to:
NuSenseSeven - A really nice Sense 7 MM build that doesn't seem to have the performance issues of stock MM.
Wolla - Nice clean Sense 8 MM build with a healthy collection of tweaks to configure.
Lineage (LOS) - Nougat build for M8 (only one?). Clean, fast AOSP-like ROM with ability to build extremely light and add what you need from gapps.
So far these are my main issues with Lineage after trying for only a few days:
Not HTC specific. So you are going to lose out on some HTC tools and menus. Something like HTC Connect to cast media, or the comprehensive gesture support HTC has. Some of these you can get back through third party apps, but not all of it and not really as well integrated as you get with HTC/Sense. There are about 5-10 things that a ROM like Wolla has that I can't find the same settings in LOS. Basically I'm deciding if I want to lose out on those to get the benefits on being on the latest possible Android for the phone.
Right now I'm leaning 80% yes on LOS, but I might decide to go back to Wolla or NuSenseSeven. I would need to do some more testing between those two before I decided on which one though.
Although there is a lack of some features in those ROMS, there are other features that you will only get in LOS like the updated Nougat notification system, Privacy Guard, and maybe a few others. So you need to choose what is best for you.
As far as speed/stability/etc. So far I have been really impressed with LOS, though all builds I mention have been way better than stock MM in the few days I've been testing. Here are the only known issues/bugs that I have had with LOS so far:
1) NFC icon. The NFC icon doesn't appear in the status bar, so you can't see at a glance if it is enabled (you can see it in quick launch though). I think this is a regression and there is a bug listed for it. I actually haven't tested the NFC yet though, but it appears that it works, just no notification icon.
2) Double list of APN in mobile settings. This is just a display bug...for some reason the menu option is there twice.
3) I too have had some data/connection issues, but I am not ready to rule the ROM as the issue yet. Basically on the quicklaunch bar it was showing my data connection as "No service" instead of "Verizon Wireless." It would say Verizon sometimes, but not always. I couldn't tell if this was an issue with the display or not because my other ROMS didn't have a comparable icon, so I had to start looking at the hidden phone menus to see what my connection was saying. Sure enough, my phone didn't appear to be getting a carrier name listed when I was using LOS most of the time, but it was there all the time (at least all my testing time) on other ROMs.
As I was trying to compare/troubleshoot this by flashing different ROMS and radios at some point I got to a point where my 4G wouldn't work at all (stuck at 3G). This was the case even when flashing back to pure stock everything. I spent the better part of a day working on this and couldn't find the solution until I found a few other threads of people discussing no 4G connection and the only solution was a new SIM card. Sure enough I got a new SIM from Verizon today and 4G came back immediately. I reflashed LOS and on boot it shows I'm on Verizon, so I'm hoping it stays.
Stumbled into this thread last week, and was curious. Currently running LineageOS 14.1-20170727 and I'm impressed. Been running fine for about a week now with no major issues. Getting a slightly better battery life, better responsiveness, and good 4G connectivity.
Only minor issues have been spotty WiFi connection, though it might have just been due to a weak signal. That and USB tethering doesn't appear to be working yet. Wifi Tethering seems to work fine though.
**Edit** USB tethering does work. Don't know why it wasn't earlier. Perhaps a bad USB cable
How to get it?
I'd like to try this ROM on my M8. Did you guys just flash the ROM for the regular M8 not a ported Version?
If yes, is it safe to do that. I have the GPE ROM installed on my M8 running GSM not CDMA.
Thanks!

Yeah, I just tried out the regular M8 version "One 2014 (m8)", and it worked just fine. No special setup coming from the GPE Rom, other than a full wipe. ( That's what I was running as a daily driver before ) It took a long time for the first boot, and it even rebooted on its own after the initial flashing and reboot. Give it a try. I've been really happy with it thus far.
working well except roaming
I've been running lineage on my verizon M8 for a couple months with excellent results - except when I'm out of the country roaming. In Canada and now Chile the same thing is happening - the network appears for one second, then gone the next, and repeat. Sometimes it's connected long enough for a text to get through, but not enough for any data usage. And it keeps asking me to select my sim card, and of course I have only 1.
LOS 15 is amazing. Everything works perfectly fine. I just wish LOS performed as smooth as Sense based ROMs
Any custom kernels available for M8s running LineageOS?
