MediaBowl application allows for seamless sharing and playing of media files across Android phones and tablets within the proximity of a WiFi network or WiFi hotspot hosted by one of the Android device.
The app has a very simple and intuitive interface to make connections between a small group of people, share and play the media files just as if all the shared files existed locally on each handset.
Connected sessions between users is referred to as "party". Party is started by a host and guests join. Host and guests share media files with each other by adding them into party Bowl. Once a media file is in Bowl it is accessible to all in the party.
Features:-
- Automatically finds hosts in a WiFi network
- Host approves a guest to join a party session
- Music, Pictures and Videos are streamed in real-time to playing device and are never copied.
- Simultaneously plays remote file and streams local files to multiple connected devices.
- Background streaming to allow user to make phone calls or other things in foreground.
- App automatically quits in the absence of network connection (after 30 sec timeout)
The free application is available on Google play store. You can find and download by searching for "MediaBowl" on the google play store. Or you can download the attached APK.
Some situations in which this app can be used are,
- You carry a tablet and a mobile phone with you. Media files are scattered across the two and you would have to switch between the devices when your selections for playing are not in one place. Use MediaBowl to pool them together and play as if they are in one place.
- On an outing, you and your friends all take pictures on phones and when you are in the vehicle to return or to go next destination, all of you exchange phones to show the many pictures each has taken. Instead use MediaBowl to share the pictures and so each of you can see all the pictures taken by all of you in your own phone.
- You and some colleagues are carpooling or travel to and from office in Cab together. The travel time can be made entertaining if all of you could exchange and play your personal music, videos and pictures with each other. Use MediaBowl to serve and play media files by streaming them in real-time between handsets.
- You have some interesting pictures or videos from a personal/family event that you want to share with your friends. You normally show from your phone and is inconveniencing if one of you gets a call. Instead Use MediaBowl to stream your pictures and videos to your friend’s handset in the background. So your friends can play the media in their phones while you carry on with your activity using your phone.
Please use the app and give your valuable feedback. I will try and fix any bugs or shortcomings as soon they are reported. Thank you in advance.

Great app! Please add DLNA suport for TVs.
Very interesting app. Kind of reminds me of turning your phone/tablet into one of those portable wireless hard drives. I will give this a go when I get home.
Fantastic app, works flawlessly. Good job devs
This might have a little improvement, but theres already an app doing that. 'FlashShare'
*add*
Besides, i dont find the name "Media Bowl" kool, may be Dev should check another.
Keeps popping up "No network connection" Network connection for what?
almost the same functions like samsungs share app
Very flawed app, people want an app with which you'll
be able to play the same file on multiple devices IN SYNC!!!
If I wanted to play the song on someone elses phone I'd just
send it by bluetooth. This app would be great if you were able to
use one device as the source and play music off both devices at
the same time... Otherwise it's just a gimmick and has been done
before...

And as @its_Khal has said, the name is pretty crap,
'Party Stream' or something similar might be a better idea.

Not sure I understand your usage case. Why would you want to play the same song on 2 different devices in sync? To see how loud you could blast one song using multiple device speakers? Also, you could use Bluetooth to send a song but sending anything bigger than that like large video files would be slow in comparison to wifi. Plus if you're sharing with more than one person this app would be easier and faster.
I do agree though that the name could use more work.

What most people thought this was, was a copy of Samsung's Group play.
Group Play uses Wi-Fi Direct to play music through several devices at the same time.
It gives you the option of assigning channels to each device so you can have a stereo

Why would someone want to do that? Most smartphone speakers don't even come close to true stereo speakers. Not to mention they don't come close to the range of true stereo speakers so the sound would be mediocre at best. The group play "feature" is more of a gimmick. Plus, how often are you with a group of people that want to link their phones together to form a makeshift 5.1 speaker set with their phone? Btw, not singling you out. I would ask Samsung this same question myself if I could.

My kids would want to do that. They often trade off playing tunes from their crummy phone speakers. Setting up their phones to play off multiple crummy speakers in sync would make you hero for the day.

Damn just downloaded the app in the thought It could play music synced between multiple Android devices
and then I realised this is the only function this app can't do xD
--> Deinstalled (Also it crashed a lot!)
I have multiple hi-fi systems and multiple Android devices and want to play music on all systems the same time,
this way I could set up all my hi-fi systems to act as one big system without wiring them all together...
Ok,now searching somewehere else for an app that can do this.

Some time back I got a bt gps to go with my PPC ... added OziExplorer and TomTom and now I don't get lost any more.
I've been reading ebooks on it since day 1.
I use it to play music in places that I could never have my own music before.
I sometimes take a movie or some episodes of my favorite shows when I'm going somewhere that involves a long wait (like waiting at the airport between flights).
I think being able to do all of the above is really COOL!
I got to wondering what other incredibly cool things I could do with my PPC that I haven't thought about yet.
So here's your chance to tell me (and everyone else here) what you think is a really great way of using your PPC.
It doesn't matter what particular unit you have, or if you think everyone already knows about it ... if you think it's really cool to be able to do whatever it is - I'd love to hear about it.
Can't say I've ever used it, but I think Fullscreen Terminal Services looks great. It'll freak you're friends out to see you using full Windows Media Center and Word on your universal

Thats cool
hey..a bit off topic but can some 1 please help me set a terminal client? i have absolutely no idea how to go about it..i have all necessary equipment.
*Hey VJ did you get time to look into the icon thingy for pocket plus and Vjphone tools.
Thanks..
Nish, I'm afraid I didn't get a chance to look at the icon thing. I need to backup before installing SPB, don't want it screwing up my system, but I was working late in the office last night. Can you try posting on this board as well. Not that many people see mine!
For terminal services, look here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?p=172248#172248
I didn't know either, and it doesn't take much. Have a look at my VJFullscreenTSC thread to find the concurrent user patch (might be on my webpage also?)
Doormat: what's cool? I'm an ebook man also (I like converting chm files to htm and using Isilo. I converted the CIA World Factbook as well, very useful, if never used!) I love watching simpsons whilst washing the pots. That's about all I use my universal for (and developing for WM5)!
V
Doormat, you could use your PPC as a remote control for your home audio i.e TV DVD SKY STERIO. I use novii remote delux. Works great and means you have full control over the TV, even when the misses has got the SKY remote.
I find that using it to make calls is COOL
I just like that fact it is multiple devices in one: a phone, organiser, sat nav, MP3 player, the list goes on.
The JAM is my first PPC- although I have been working with PDAs (Microsoft based ones mainly) for a long time at work- I always wished for someone to bring out a fully fledged PDA with phone capabilities; the JAM (and now a few others) was the perfect one to wait for.
Next PPC: the O2 Atom or Prophet
I use it for terminal server access
Citrix server access
5250 emulation
Movies
TV Episodes
TomTom
Tourch
Phone
Internet access
Remote control
Games
thats about it for now, but im always doing more with em..

Same here. Love walking the streets with a wireless headset.
I use my mini as a periscope. When I am reading the newspaper in the toilet at work I check if the boss came in using the camera.
I also use outlook as a kind of data-base of everything I know. It helps a lot, I wish I knew a more versatile and free one so I could keep the contacts by them self.
Best of all it helps me sleep. I wrote a web service on my server at home so that when my wife stays up to late tappping on the keyboard I can launch an app on the server remotely that tells me what programs she has running and lets me kill them from my ppc from under the covers.
I use it with a BT GPS receiver + tomtom and I also use it with Salling Clicker http://www.salling.com/ to control itunes to wirelessly stream music to my stereo.
Thats a about the extent of the cool things that I do with it.
Use TT5 with a wired gps and cradle for navigation, the phone obviously, watch ripped DVD's whilst I'm waiting at places, play the occasional game and surf the web or read and write emails - So I suppose I use most of the functions at some point during the working week.
Streaming Digital Satellite reception to my Universal.
As I have a Dreambox Digital Satellite Receiver which is connected to my home network I can stream video to my PCs on the network using VLC which in turn I can stream back video to my Universal using TCPMP. It works not 100% as I am getting an elongated picture and it is turned 90° to the GUI of TCPMP, but I can live with it until I expermiment some more with VLC.
I will tell you : Praying for a firmware release that clear al bugs

How does it works?
Can we really listen to any song?
When you select a song, Ghosttown uses the YouTube API to search for and play the song. Just about any song by a known artist will work.
Where is the app available?
You can download Ghosttown from the Android Market
More info: http://ghosttownapp.com/
Wow, i am impressed. Does exactly what it says! Sometimes finds live versions of the songs though, instead of the album versions.
Saw this on Gizmodo, very nice app!
So we can just search from Youtube and download/listen to the song?
THATS INCREDIBLE!
THANK YOU
oh and yeah the LIVE versions that come up are annoying as ****.

Loving this app!
Just needs a playback control widget and compatibility with bluetooth controls (unless mine just isn't cooperating).
Just wondering if this is essentially just a youtube player without displaying the video?
Meaning.. does it still stream/download both video and audio from the youtube servers, but just play the audio without displaying video? Or does it just stream/download the audio from youtubes servers without the video (less to download etc)
Great app. Shame that there is no killers live from the royal albert hall. Would also be nice if the audio at the start of some songs (try a dustland farytale of the importance of being idle) could be removed

I'd like to know this also. And if the music comes direct from YouTube's servers or if it has to pass through another or anything, because my plan has unlimited YouTube access and if it's all coming from YouTube I can use as much as I'd like.
I'm kinda wondering about the quality of the audio. How is this compared to say, Spotify?
Nice idea....here's a couple of suggestions...I'm on a slow connection...is there the possibility to be able to check "slow connection" or "buffer entire song"? I'd either like it to buffer MORE or the whole song before playing..nothing more annoying then a song that stops every 10 seconds or so to buffer for another minute then 10 more seconds......along those lines I'd suggest buffering song 2 as soon as song 1 finishes downloading......on a fast connection this won't matter but if I'm buffering whole songs it means the 3 minutes or so the song is playing are grabbing the next song for me.
Also, if you are in fact grabbing the video's and stipping off the audio...maybe you want to allow someone to choose quality level....audiophiles may want the audio from the high quality version (360p etc) where people with slowpoke connections may be fine with the "lowfi" version.
You may want a "ban this song" option as well for those getting "live" versions of songs...create a personal blacklist for that one and pull in a new one.
Thanks!

Try tubemate, its in the market
Sent from my neighbors wifi.
I sent you an email through the Market contact but, I'll post it here too.
This app is great! When it works it works brilliant. One annoying gripe though, songs skip randomly and sometimes the app just quits altogether. I'm not sure if it's because of conflicting music apps(I have Tune Wiki and Music 3.0 as well) or what. But the song skipping happens whenever I run another app alongside this one. Like, Whatsapp or MP3 Music Downloader. Just now, it quit when I logged on to the Market. Let me know how I can help.
I have a Nexus S(i9023) currently running Liquid Nexusbread v1.9 with Netarchy 1.3.2 kernel on Android 2.3.4
congratulations, it's a very good app.
i'd like to be able to put the whole album in playlist instead of song by song...

This is a movie manager for your tablet (and soon phone running ICS).
Your movies and TV shows are identified and in just one click you could watch them with your favorite player.
free version (no ads) :
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.adree.moviebrowser
paid version with UPnP/DLNA support :
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.adree.moviebrowser.upnp
little bump just to let you know the app now support samba (without root) and new layouts for ICS phones.
best wishes
Hi
Great app just got the paid version. Me I had trouble since my server lost often upnp connectivity but samba as protocol overcomes this problem. Nevertheless further improvements are visible. I would like to remove manually some movies it detects and would like as well to manually change some movie information.
I think especially for series the automatic detection works only poorly.
Hope some will be fixed in next update.
Keep up the good work !
nice i think but to try
Thanks for the feedback,
I know I need to work on a way to manually identify series, atm I'm working on some little UI improvment like creating tabs for video sources and grouping by seasons then I will work on that for sure.
Regards
Hi welcome
Actually I judged a little bit too fast, most series I was able now to include. Is there a way to differentiate between the different seasons ? For example I do have multiple Dexter seasons but can't distinguish them until I click on one of the item. Then it would say season 1 or 2 but they do have the same icons...
Would this work with a Pogoplug device as well? The device support UPnP so I guess it would right?
Obviously yes, and in case the device as trouble to be recognised you can still use Samba.
If you want to be sure try the free version, the browser in the setup screen will show your device if its recognised.
Great App!!!
This is a great app I got the paid version.
Just finished renaming a bunch of my TV episodes.
Some of my movies didn't translate to the right IMBD number Example: 2012: Ice Age was resolved as Ice Age:continental Drift with is a Animated Movie. Not sure if there is another option to maybe include more description in my File Name to get the right movie.
I need some help with the Samba settings in moviebrowser and windows 7. Is it possible to look at the movies over 3G?
[Edit] I figured it out to configure samba in my own network, but over the internet seems it be a bit more complicated.
Hi
thanks for the latest update, really brought some improvements!
Any progress on two important points, manual editing and manual removal of unwanted
movies ? The first one I overcame now by just renaming the files, but the second one
keeps being a little bit annoying. For example I do have a few movies which
then contain several video files, only one being the actual movie. Not being able
to remove the other ones adds unwanted extra films which I cant remove.
Keep on , updating !
@sweborn : To browse over the INTERNET you should look at upnp/dlna. some servers offer this option and its easily/safely configurable.
@ebioman : Its coming soon now have lot of idea in mind its just a matter of prioritizing.
best regards
Does it work on smartphone?
Just want to say I love this app and bought the pro UPNP version!
I was so happy to see the addition of the TVDB api and I just LOVE the ability to fold all seasons into one using tabs!
Great Feature since I have a lot of TV stuff on my Server.
But there are still some bugs in the scraping aspects.
For one I can't seem to get the Looney Tunes collection to scrape properly. I know this is a special case as it uses years for Season Info not the usual 01,02 Etc...
S00 Scrapes properly but I suspect in the API implementation you may be truncating the season as the 4 number seasons do not seem to scrape properly and be incorporated into the season.
I also have an issue with remakes such as Day of the Dead where both wind p with the newer icon despite proper year being noted in the title.
Again I would suspect the full title (like the fll season number) is being truncated somehow.
As to what everyone else said I would love to be able to manually edit the Images and descriptions for movies I have that would not scrape because they are personal or un documented.
But all that aside I love this program you made!
EDIT: One feature I would like to see added is if the default meta source (in my case MovieDB and TVDB) comes up empty that the program should also look at IMDB

Well for one your selections for players are limited by the filetype your trying to play and where your playing it from.
You choose the video player on first play and I suspect you may have set one as the default which would inhibit the program from asking again.
What player does it default to on playback?
Find that player in you Settings Applications and clear any defaults it has set.
Go back to Movie browser, try and play something and it should pop up a list of the players it can use.
If your bsplayer doesn't show in that list then it doesn't support that filetype.
If you don't check use player by default it will ask you for which player to use each time.
Filemasks for search?
Any chance to get exclusion filemasks for search setup? For example the recordings from my htpc all have the channel name being included as part of name being searched: Example: "A Walk in the Clouds WWLFDT2" and the lookup fails due to the channel name...exclusion filemasks could be added so that _WWLFDT2_ in the filename gets converted to just "_" before doing a search.
Any chance we can have a version that works on Android 2.3?
I just bought a media player an having this app would be awesome
its this one btw.

Been using this for a while on my tablet (TF101) and has been great (uPNP version)!
just got a google tv box (logitech revue) and have downloaded this for its primary use on there (I have ESFile Explorer and GTVBox players installed, vplayer and other not working) - seeing the following issues:
1. The view in google TV means that you can only see 2 movies at a time, makes it quite slow to move around - can you a include a specific theme for gtv (for me, would be a wallpaper of all covers, with a second page for individual movie details?)
2. I cannot get a movie to play from the browser - it seems to be favouring GTVBox over ES video player (even though no defaults are set) and goes to a blank screen with the honeycomb circle (please wait) showing continuously
I have the movie files on an external hard drive connected to the USB input, so no uPNP issues to worry about - I will try moving a movie onto the internal memory tonight to see if that changes anything??
any tricks to try would be appreciated - looking for this to be my main app on the lgoitech (so that my son lets me have my tablet back!)
Improvements for GTV
I am actually glad I read this. GTVBox has been giving me headaches in the video streaming category & I was curious about this on when looking through Google Play. Other than the issues below are you planning on adding a more in-depth video search? Most of my videos are in their own sub-folders & they are divided up by genre.
Plus I did see that the app appears to go to the GTVBox video player which makes me apprehensive in purchasing the full version. If you can add like genre folders & have the app point to the default player when selecting a movie I'd by this in a heartbeat. But seriously, 15min is not enough time for me to fully test out the paid version to see if this is what I am looking for.
I am impressed with the movie database look-up though, really cool!

So, @Chainfire was kind enough to drop root on us today.
That means all bets are off. I got a Nexus Player early because I am a big HTPC enthusiast, as well as an avid Android Tweaker. I live to rip apart my OS and tailor it like a weird suit only I could love.
So, just flashed CF's rootboot, and it worked wonderfully. Given that I can now not only decompile and recompile lollipop APK's at will and modify system files...well...we can do anything.
For starters, I definitely want to make Google Play Movies uninstallable. I have Plex and a ton of content, and I don't want to have google movie suggestions cluttering up my screen. So let's make a script that can dump it to /data. Hell, toss music over there too.
How about re-ordering the home screen so the apps we want take first slots...not google's stuff.
I'm sure we can also have some more fun. If the bootloader is insecure, we can unpack the boot image, add init.d support and maybe tune some of Google's stock settings...see if we can get it to render HD content a little snappier.
So yeah. Hello everybody with a Nexus Player. I'm Digitalhigh. I've tried to do awesome things for people who have had the Evo 3D, M7, M8, and a few other random devices, and now I'm going to take a crack at the Nexus Player.
Let me know if you have any other ideas you'd like to see materialized.
Sounds good!
I think my number one pet peeve is not being able to re-arrange the apps how I see fit (even the "bump to the front the apps you use most" feature as google supposedly designed isn't working). I'd actually love to have a "pinned" row above all others with my favorite shortcuts, in the order I want them.
A close second fix would be the ability to surface non-TV optimized apps directly on the main interface, on a per app basis.
I love that the NP is now open for business.
Anyway we can get it setup so we can select the output resolution and possibly adjust for overscan. Also see if we can get some surround sound support. Seems that only google play movies outputs dolby digital.

Same here! I just did my first bit of system magic, completely obliterating play movies and tv, just to make sure the system wasn't dependent on it somehow. It's not, and I'm happy.
I will do a pull of /data, go through the XML and db's and see what settings are available to us. It'd either be in /data, or maybe a default settings bit somewhere in the UI apk that sets the default layout.
For adding non-TV apps to home menu...I forget the name, but there is an android APK out there that will let you link to specific activities in an app and make a shortcut for it on the home of launcher...I wonder if it would work with this.

Again, I'll look at what settings are available. I'll also pull down the factory image for it and see what we have available there. Just because we don't have an installer for it, doesn't mean we can't flash custom software and stuff through bootloader...kinda similar to my Rockchip RK808 android on a stick.
Oh, and I know it's a pain...but get the plexpass for a month or two. The plex for plex pass app works BEAUTIFULLY with this. I know it sucks having to pay, but versus sideloading the regular apk...it's so gorgeous...and it integrates into the home screen and searches. Only beef with it is that it's a bit laggy over AC for 1080...can't wait for my OTG cable and USB hub w. integrated NIC.
Edit: Oh, and it was sending 5.1 audio to the stereo.

So excited! I wish I knew more so I could help. I'm still just figuring how to setup the android sdk lol. But anyways, I guess what I'd like to see are my own apps in the home screen and all of the content at the top that Google shoves in our faces removed. If there's anything I can do to help get all of this awesomeness going just hit me up! ?
I sideloaded the plex apk from my logitech revue. It has the android tv interface. I dont know how up to date it is compared to thr plex pass version. But it works. But its only outputting 2.0 audio. According to the plex forum its because it uses the internal android player. That doesnt support surrounf sound.

You can turn off notifications for Google Play Movies (or any other app) and it wont show suggestions.
Looking forward to whatever else you may be able to come up with regards to customization.
I had to RMA my original unit, so I am waiting to get the new one before I root.
I'm just glad you're here. I was beginning to get nervous... it seems almost nobody has been talking about the Nexus Player. I have no development experience, but would be happy to test/help in any way needed. Keep that in mind.
Also willing to test and collaborate

Count me in as well! Can't wait to see some development for this little hockey puck.
please open up Bluetooth audio support. that would be awesome.
Calendar
I would love to get google calendar working, (can sideload but won't open) Would love to be able to sync my calendar to this device for morning viewing.
Third party apps will install (business calendar) but you cannot sync for some reason.

This is probably best as a separate topic in the Q&A section, but have you checked in settings under your user name? there is a sync section. is calendar listed there at all? I can't check at the moment, but something you can try.

Thanks for your feedback. It's useful, "Sync online playlist" feature will be implemented in next version. :good:
You can send feedback directly in the left menu of the App.
I suggest that on the search result, not only show the name of the video / music, but also the length of time, how long for the video / music.
And also, it would be great if the search result can show the playlist of other people, like on the official YouTube app.
This app is absolutely genius!! Thank you so much for creating this!
Suggestions:
- Settings to choose default quality to download
- Removal of default youtube account, or implementation of option to use our own account (app is really early version, I understand)
- Option to exit the app from the notification on lockscreen (for now pause and swipe it away)
Bugs:
- Alot of urls cannot be fetched for some reason (lukas graham feat Brandon Beal golden for example), but I encountered 6-10 songs in 25 tries (once a song reports error, retrying never helps though the message suggests it)
Last note - what about the legal aspect of this app, especially in regards to the download feature? Have you considered a reaction from Google?
Kind Regards
TwinAdk

Hmm, I know that. The application's purpose is just bringing the comfortable to user by provide some "limited features" of youtube app such as listening sound from video to save bandwidth and saving offline contents. It has a bit of trouble about video's copyright but I think it can be ignore because there are many website and browser/plugin does the same.
The app is Non-profit 100%. I neither intend to publish it on Play store nor compete with youtube app.
Thanks :good:

About servers and availability - is the conversion of songs and fetching from YouTube happen on your server infrastructure? If yes, you might want to change that to happen on the user's phone, at least any part of the process requirering bandwidth, as that is the pricy part. Also to avoid local restrictions on content.. The conversion of songs, I don't know if that is possible locally on Android, it requires you to add much more code to the app.
About copyright, I think you are right, but moving workload to the individual device also helps here :good:
Kind Regards

All streaming data come from googlevideo host, it means my app does the same with youtube app except while you download video as mp3 type.
New version, very nice! :good::victory:
Question, is it planned to implement the suggest feature youtube have? Eg, when I play a song, similar or related songs are shown.. It's tricky I know, I was just wondering?
Just noticed the following errors when downloading songs.. I guess the timestamps and titles will allow you to investigate if necessary.
Nice initiative but will wait for much more stable and complete app.
^~^
good luck buddy.

Current version also fetches related songs, after current playback (online) ended, the next one related with it will auto play.
I planning to design screen "Player" which help you to control playback (seek, next, pause,...) and see the related songs.

Oh, I got it, I have fixed this bug and will include it in next versions.
Big thanks for you.
You're a genius. Best online music app ever, I really liked it. Could you add predictive search just like in youtube or it isn't possible?
Love the app idea.
Here are suggestions:
1). Playlists - It would be nice to search/play music playlists.
2). Seek Bar - There are some long music mixes or playlists converted into one large file, the ability to fast forward the long track is not possible.
These two features makes YouTube a great app for music.
I can't download the media libs.
Me either I've tried to all day thought it was just me

With Amazon Fire TV arm64 libs start to download but then the app crashed and won't start up again. Deleted cache and data and the app will start again and trying to download the libs again but it is again crashing.

I'm thinking of it. May be my app detects wrong CPU architecture of your devices (I see some topic say about android TV issues with CPU arch).
Your TV's cpu is arm64, does my app download arm64-libs.zip?
Thanks for your report.
