[Q] Keyboard Dock doesn't work when device is encrypted? - Galaxy Tab 2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
Got a P3100 that needs to be encrypted for various reasons. There is no way around it, unfortunately. It is running stock ICS 4.0.3, unrooted (also non-negotiable)
I have one of these docks:

When entering the Encryption password on boot it functions perfectly. As soon as it reboots into android, it ceases functioning.
It functions 100% correctly on an unencrypted device, but as soon as it is encrypted it ceases to work at all. Why is this? Is there any way around it?
It still charges through the dock if I plug the dock in, regardless of encryption. The dock has a blue LED for indicating when caps lock is enabled/disabled. I noticed that if I leave caps lock on, then insert the tablet into the dock the LED will flash on briefly, then the tablet will indicate that it is charging (when the dock is plugged in), fthen the LED will go out and no longer responds to the caps lock key.
I find this all very odd as using a keyboard and/or mouse via USB OTG cable works fine, but the official accessory does not?
Any help?
Thanks

One last ditch attempt - bump!

Well, since no one replied so far it would seem you're either having a problem no one ever experienced or knows a solution about.
Seeing the Verizon logo on your device, and reading "stock ICS 4.0.3"... I take calling Verizon and asking them about the odds of one of their "ROM betterfications" maybe screwing up is a futile attempt?
Anyway, while your problem description is a bit thin you at least worked out that it seems to work with a USB OTG connected keyboard/mouse. Now... when you plug the tablet into the keyboard dock... is the keyboard totally "dead" or do some of the keys still work? If the tablet still reacts to the "navigation" keys it would indicate a software problem. At least on the Tab 8.9 the keyboard dock doesn't work when the Samsung keyboard isn't selected as the default input method, but it still reacts to the one or another odd key. If it doesn't react at all, you already gave the 30-pin connector in the dock a visual inspection (you may need a magnification glass) to rule out it could be damaged?
If the dock happens to work flawlessly when the device is not encrypted (no physical damage of the connector) but starts acting up once the device is encrypted you already found the problem... some kind of software problem when the device is encrypted. It would actually be interesting if logcat would show some error upon plugging the tablet into the dock (if it does, that may give a clue about what went wrong).
What are the chances of upgrading the firmware? Google just showed me a Verizon page claiming that there's a Jelly Bean 4.1.2 OTA upgrade. How about updating and checking if it solved the problem at hand?
As a value added tip for the future: it's better to resort to Bluetooth keyboards / mice instead (plus a tablet stand so the tablet can stand in front of you in portrait or landscape orientation). Gives you the adavantage that you can use it with another device (i.e. the Logitech K800 can pair with up to 3 devices and be easily switched between them) once you move on to some better tablet/phone, and you're not bound to sit right there but have freedom to move the keyboard around.

It's not a Verizon model, it's unbranded (I'm in the UK) - that image is just a stock photo. The dock is not damaged and functions 100% when a device is unencrypted. I'm 100% sure the issue lies in the encryption.
It works on the encryption 'enter password' screen but no further
Chances of upgrading the firmware are 0%. Same with using Bluetooth keyboards and mice as they are used in a clinical business environment and the various risks involved with disconnection/potential for data breach via bluetooth are sadly too great.
You spoke of 'logcat' - how would I access this?
Thanks for the reply! Even though I think it's a lost cause it's hugely appreciated.

Well, in this rather sad case it's almost safe to assume that there's a software issue between the software stack for the dock and the device encryption (though that's freakin' weird that Samsung's QC didn't test out this particular scenario).

Yeah. I understand that all sorts of wireless connectivity is a absolute no go around medical equipment, especially in ICU's.
However, that security model a bit through the roof. While I understand that patient records are confidential and the internal network of a hospital is a critical infrastructure because equipment could be interconnected, it's not that easy to hack into the system through a active BlueTooth connection (especially not when the default on Android is "Not visible") ... your WiFi network (by the end of the day your tablet needs to somehow connect to the LAN, and since the Tab 2 doesn't come with a ethernet jack that only leaves us with WiFi) is the more vulnerable attack vector for someone really wanting to get in (for whatever ill intent). However, we don't want to start a "network security" debate here.

There are two ways to get to the system log. One way, enabling you to catch the boot-up process, is to turn on adb debugging in the developer options on the tablet, have the tablet connected via the charging cable to a PC, have the drivers and "adb" installed and "adb logcat > logcat.txt" running so it starts fetching the log at the earliest moment possible (as soon as adbd was started on the tablet).
The other way is to install, for example, "CatLog" from the Play Store. This program displays the logcat output inside a nice application right there on the tablet and also enables you to write the log-roll to a text file for further analysis. This doesn't get the early log output, but running it right after a boot-up and letting it record while you try to mess about with the dock's keyboard will get as much data as somehow possible in case it would show a error related to it (logcat has a bit of a buffer, when invoked fast enough it might be able to get to the bits of the early log).
One "security concern" involved here (in regards to the slightly paranoid setup of your work place(?)) is that this log contains a lot of data you may not want to show to the public - like the Google e-mail address associated with the device, several IDs like the one of the WiFi AP and the tablet and so on... you can even see which apps have been launched during boot. That gives away so much info to make a system/network admnistrator already wearing a tin-foil hat to totally go bananas.

Well, apart from the latent chance that a fix might be impossible, the main problem I see is that it's obviously a employer issued device (given you're from the nursing staff and not a patient of the facility) therefore hard to give out logs to strangers on the Internet for "look-see" when you're already trapped in a tin-foil hat wearers environment. To try and track down the problem one needs to see what's going on with the device, and that would mean laying eyes on data that's surely deemed "our admin eyes only" in your case. That, at least, would be my definition of the "main reason for the lost cause".
Anyway, if you can install CatLog and review the log and spot a meaningful error feel free to post the bits relating to just the error instead of a full system-log.

Anyone got this yet? I ordered this and it's on its way. It sounds perfect for me in my usage. I currently use my Jawbone Icon, which is awesome btw with the addition of A2DP which also works with Navigation. I hope this works as well as it is described!
UPDATE 5/25/10
Opening the box and powering up this puppy is a mistake indoors or inside the car with the windows rolled up. The sucker is LOUD! Granted there is a warning that the S4 can reach up to 100dbs!! So be careful...
When powering up the S4 for the first time, the unit is LOUD, after you regain hearing, the unit automatically goes into pairing mode. Just turn on your bluetooth on your phone and input the standard "0000" keycode if your phone prompts you for it, my Nexus one did not. After the phone is paired, the S4 gives you an audible notification that the phone is connected and will start transferring your contact list into the S4. On android phones, you need to hit the prompt in the notification bar to authorize the transfer and again an audible alert will be sounded letting you know, your "contacts are being transferred". After a minute or so (depending on how many contacts you have), the unit will tell you when it has finished. Just a FYI, the S4 claims they can hold 2000 contacts, so not to worry.
Now we can go ahead and use the sucker! Your "trigger phrase" is of course, "BlueAnt, Speak to Me". At that point the S4 prompts you for a command. You have the option to go through the help by saying "what can I say" and it will give you your available sub-trigger words. This can range from, "am I connected", to "phone commands", which prompts your phone to go into voice dialing thanks to Froyo. In addition to voice dialing, redialing, and checking the battery life of the S4 using the commands, you can also ask for "favorites". What this does is dial into Bing-411. If you are familiar with Goog-411, its the exact same thing minus the "beep-boop-beep" sound effect that Goog-411 has lol. On word of advice though in using the "favorites" command; even though there is no charge for the call, but you do use your minutes to use that function. PLEASE TAKE NOTE OF THIS IF YOU ARE NOT ON AN UNLIMITED VOICE PLAN.
With the windows rolled down and driving about 25mph, with wind blowing in, I can still use the trigger command with no problems. Very impressive!
To another function, A2DP. Now this is genius. You can use the S4 as a speakerphone for either your music on you phone (it won't sound very great), but more so use the unit's speakerphone function for Navigation. In using google navigator, this is a great tool to have. I mean use can use your OEM car dock, but I only use the OEM car dock on long trips going through long drives, through states, but for an hour drive, I would use the S4. You can use the Nexus one's power cord to power the S4 if need be but the battery life is pretty rock solid even with use.
The next part I have yet to test out is the Vlingo software that was recently released for Android. For one, the initial release is 9.99USD, so you have to pay for it. I know, I know, we have voice search already on the N1, why shell out cash for Vlingo? Well for one, you can use the Vlingo to read your text msgs and emails as well as use your voice to write them. Of course you will have the same voice functions as the phones voice app, but I am interested in any case. I will report back if I do get it and if it's worth keeping. .
I hope you like my mini review and please feel free to ask any questions you may have.
The BlueAnt S4 can be purchased directly from MyBlueAnt.com or blueantwireless.com. Or you can buy one from your local Best Buy. They were recently released in the retail locals on the 23rd.
I guess no one got one of these thingys yet eh? No matter. I'll post to whomever is curious.
The official Nexus cardock would have been a much cheaper solution, don't you think?

It's not about which is cheaper (also have the car dock lol) it's about convenience. I mean, for the OEM car dock, you have to mount the suction cup thingy on the winshield and then put the N1 in the unit. Where the Blueant is totally handsfree, you do not need to mount the phone anywhere, you can just leave it in your pocket or holster (with bluetooth on of course) and work off of the unit that way. Besides, I don't normally look at my phone when driving with directions when going on short distances. For that, I would use the car dock. But that's just me.
Received it today! It's wider than it looked in the pic, but it's nicely made. Thanks to Froyo, voicedialing works!!
Does not work with MyTouch 3G Slide
Just bought one today, unfortunately will not pair correctly with a MyTouch 3G Slide with stock android 2.1.
It pairs in media mode fine but will not pair in phone mode. When selecting the phone mode in bluetooth entry checkbox it gets selected but when you exit it does not stick. Get weird dialog when first pairing asking for confirmation that BlueAnt device showing 6 digit security # (it's random each time I start pairing from scratch as a new device).
I can listen to media through the S4 but not receive or send calls.
Check firmware version of S4, its on current version as of this writing (1.5).
Download Android app in case it had any helpful settings, etc.. no go, it recognized the S4 but does not have any useful settings related to pairing.
Will research more but starting to look like a non starter with this phone/BT device matchup.

MyTouch 3G Slide update
BlueAnt confirms "Media only" on MyTouch 3G Slide is logged as a known issue, with no ETA on fix. Rep wanted to convince me to wait until after Holiday weekend to see if engineering can come up with a fix before I return the unit, but I do not see the point if it is already logged, as we know a fix could be in days weeks or who knows how long, and may be on the Android/OS side.
Sadly, returning.
BTW, kudo's though to the BlueAnt rep, as he started the customer support script and more than once I interupted him to short circuit the questions as they did not apply/I had already done those steps kind of things, he responded gracefully and did not force me through the standard junk, and we got to the problem quickly.
mytouch 3g slide to nexus one
I had the mytouch 3g slide and just returned it yesterday and got a nexus one instead. I was using the s4 with mytouch with no problems. the only thing I couldn't do was voice dialing, but when I received a call all I had to say was "Answer" and the call was connected. I haven't tried it with my Nexus One yet, but I loved the usefullness with mytouch. I love to listen to podcasts and hate carrying the phone around when I am doing chores around the house so what I use to do is connect the bluetooth to my phone, leave the phone in my room and only carry around the s4 in my pocket or clipped onto my pants with the visor clip it comes with. I wouldn't lose connection, but it would sound weird at times, but for the most part I could listen to my podcasts without a hitch! It's a great device. I was also using an android app that BlueAnt came out with with mytouch and it worked like Vlingo does, but it was free. Now I am trying to look for that same app for my Nexus and can't seem to find it. I tried the bar code scanner and it comes back with an error message. I wonder if they pulled it from the Market?

No. I wish it did though.
got it working with slide.
i know this is an old thread, but it is on of the only mentions i could find on the problem of pairing the s4 with the slide.
so, with the stock ROM you do encounter this dialog that expects you to enter a number on the speaker phone (dumb, i know). it is instinctive to hit a button when presented with a dialog, but in this case, if you let it sit while the phonebook transfer progresses without pressing either button, it will eventually complete and the dialog will disappear.
hope this helps someone.

[BIG FAQ] Nexus S General [Start Here before Clicking New Thread!] ** OUTDATED **

EDIT: EXTREMELY OUTDATED. I have not had this device for some time and will not be updating this post.
Please report all bugs encounter or search for and star the ones mentioned on these forums here: http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/list ; This is the official bug report forum of Google and the best way to let them know of the problems you are having. Don't post "Me too"s on known issues, simply star and cross your fingers!
Because people seem to be incapable of using the wonderful "Search" function built into these forums, I'm putting together a list of questions that keep popping up in new threads every other day.
Q: How's the Battery Life?
Officially, the Nexus S is rated for 6hrs of talk time and 427 of standby time. How much battery life you get will entirely depend on what you use the device for and how much. On my first real non-vacation day, my Nexus S lasted a little over 16hrs on one charge through what I would consider heavy usage (flashing roms/backups, emails, texting, web browsing, long phone calls, etc). Your mileage may vary. Fellow poster @Luxferro managed to get 2days, 14hrs, and 13minutes out of his phone on a single battery charge. Discussed here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=875809
Q: Does your GPS work?
Most people have reported their GPS to be functioning just fine, though there have been quite a bit of variation on lock times.
Q: Will this work on AT&T?
Yes, but you will not get 3G service. This is due to the different frequencies that T-Mobile and AT&T's 3G runs on.
Q: But it says it supports GSM band 850mhz!
GSM is 2G. UMTS is 3G.
Q: But Joe Bob/Dude down the street/My cousin's brother's nephew's wife said...
Stop it. It is likely that Google will release a version of the Nexus S with support for AT&T's 3G some months down the road, just like they did with the Nexus One but for right now, if you want 3G service, T-Mobile is the only way to go.
Q: Is tethering free?
So after having the phone for a bit of time now and tethering unimpended, I'm going to have to agree with @nxt that T-Mobile is not charging for or redirecting for tethering on this device. At least, for now. However, like in the original version of this answer, T-Mobile did announce that they were going to be charging for tethering but I've tethered every day for various amounts of time (including torrenting nearly a gig to my netbook) without so much as a hiccup. Source: http://bit.ly/d1NS9o
Q: Will TZones/Web2go/grandfathered web program work on this phone?
No, or at least, it doesn't appear to anymore due to T-Mobile locking down the IMEIs. When the phone was first released, people were reporting that it worked fine, then after a few days it became sporadic, before finally not functioning at all. See the discussion here for more information: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=864843
Q: I unplugged my phone, and my battery dropped from 100% to 95% immediately, or it won't/takes along time to charge past 99%, what gives?
This is by design. Your phone will slow down and eventually stop pulling charge at or slightly greater than ~95% regardless of what your battery indicator says. This is to extend the overall life of the battery, as constant 100% to 0% charge/discharge cycles will cause it to fail prematurely. If you're interested in really pushing it to 100%, you can use a technique that is called "bump charging" and is better detailed here: http://bit.ly/f6xiZ0
Q: When I reboot my phone while it's charging, the battery jumps from X% to Y%, what gives?
I'm honestly not sure what causes this, but sometimes Android/Gingerbread gets confused on how much exact charge is in your battery if you reboot it while it's charging. However, from personal observation, it's just a display issue. Android/GB will eventually start showing the correct percentages once the battery has "caught up" with what it thinks it is at. Also wiping the battery stats(root only) seems to help alleviate this issue. Either way, it's not a large concern.
Q: Can we port SenseUI/Galaxy S apps to the Nexus S?
Most likely, no. Those apps typically require the Rosie/Touchwiz framework in order to function. You can have those apps when and if a developer decides to port those ROMs in their entirety.
Q: How do I root/unroot the Nexus S?
Check the development section links below for more detail, but you gain root on the Nexus S by booting the phone into fastboot mode and typing "fastboot oem unlock." This will wipe your phone and it's SD card partition. To unroot it, again boot into fastboot mode and type "fastboot oem lock."
Follow the root guide stickied at the top of this forum: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=895545
In the event you want to return to stock, simply flash the NAND backup found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=884093 . This will restore everything, including the stock recovery image. Then as mentioned above go into the bootloader/fastboot mode and enter "fastboot oem lock" in ADB.
(All credit goes to the original author(s) of the linked thread!)
Q: Linpack/Quadrant Scores?
Linpack doesn't play very nicely with the Galaxy S lineup generating very low numbers in comparison to HTC devices. This is because the processors that are powering these devices operate in different ways. Does this mean the Nexus S processors are slower? Not really, just different. As for Quadrant, it doesn't currently work very well with Gingerbread and needs to be updated. The scores folks have been seeing though put it in the 1600 range without a modified kernel.
Q: There's no LED Indicator? What are those two circles next to the speaker?
Correct, like all Samsung devices(minus the Epic 4G on Sprint) thus far, there is no LED indicator light. There are apps, such as NoLED, on the marketplace which work great on the Nexus S and provide more or less the same functionality. There's another app called BLN which will blink the capacitive touch keys to let you know you have a notification, but it requires a custom kernel to support it. Those two circles are the Proximity Sensor and Ambient Light sensor.
Q: I can't zoom in and out on the camera app!
Correct, the digital zoom feature seems to be missing.
Q: Can the Nexus S do 720p?
No, at least, not right now and not on the stock ROM. It is possible that eventually our wonderful developer community will come up with a software hack for custom ROMs to allow 720p video recording, but at a reduced framerate than if it had a true 720p chip similiar to what they did with the Nexus One. Until then, the answer is no.
Q: But that one guy in Italy says the Italian version can do 720p recording!
No, he says that it can do 720x480 which isn't the same thing. The 720p "name" comes from the last numbers in the resolution, so in this case, it would be 1280x720(which the other Galaxy S phones are rated to shoot at).
Q: How do I video chat?
Google, unfortunately, did not develop a native app to support video chat and so we must rely on some from the marketplace. Right now, as far as I'm aware, Tango is the only one that has been updated to support video chatting on the Nexus S.
Q: My toys are better than your toys! Hahahaha!
Stop it and grow up. Different strokes for different folks. People spend their money on what they want to spend it on regardless of your agreement on their choice. Not to mention that this kind of behavior goes against the spirit of this community.
Q: I'm rooted with Clockwork and can't install the OTA! I updated to 2.3.1 and lost root! What gives?
most of the time, official OTAs will not install through custom recoveries because of their tendency to break root or restore things like the stock recovery. Also if you've made any modifications to the system files such as replacing the default Mms.apk(messaging) with the custom Black Mms.apk found in the Themes & Apps section, or deleted any .odex files from the system partition, it will not install. The easiest way to update to 2.3.1 is to flash a custom rom such as one of the custom ROMs or use the 2.3.1 Stock NANDROID backup found in the development section. And yes, 2.3.1 "broke root." To regain it, simply follow the steps in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=884499 (All credit goes to the original author(s) of the linked thread!). The aforementioned procedure is only needed on the Stock Nandroid Backup, not any of the custom ROMs.
Q: Clockworkmod says I'm not set up for OTAs! What gives?
That's not for official OTA updates from Google. Some custom ROM developers set up their roms to receive custom OTA updates or at least notifications of said update specifically for that ROM.
Q: Why have my Wifi/3G/Signal bars switched from green to white?
A green set of bars typically means that you are connected to and syncing with the Google Account servers. White means that this is not happening for whatever reason, usually something like a bad signal or low coverage area. Also the WiFi connection is set by default to turn itself off(aka sleep mode) when the screen is off, this can be adjusted under Settings > Wireless & Networks > Wi-Fi Settings > Menu Key > Advanced > Wi-Fi Sleep Policy. Don't panic, though, it's nothing too major.
(Suggested by mmas0n, thanks!)
Q: How do I restore the stock recovery?
Right now, it is NOT possible to flash the stock recovery over Clockwork Recovery at all. The only way to restore it is by NAND restoring the Stock 2.3.1 backup in the development section.
Q: Does the Nexus S have Gorilla Glass?
No, it does not. Take care of your device.
Q: The Nexus S only gets 3G? Omg, I only see a 3G icon!
The Nexus S gets UMTS and HSDPA, which are both technically 3G. Your phone idles on UMTS 3G, and when it starts downloading/uploading, it'll flip to HSDPA after a few moments. You can see this by typing *#*#4636#*#* into your Dialer, going to Phone Info, and looking at Network Type while downloading something. The ability to switch the icons on the notification bar is something that was added in custom ROMS, and is not supported by the stock ROM. Furthermore, the icon is not always an indicator of what kind of data connection you have. If I were so inclined(and I'm not) and/or had the technical skills(which I don't) to modify the framework, I could make it say OVER9000g when connected to anything. Rest assured, if you are on a network that uses the 3G bands the Nexus S supports, then you are recieving HSDPA regardless of what icon you see.

Possible Known Issues(Reported by some users but not all):
Lag in the Web Browser
Back button is not responsive or doesn't light up
Pink / white / yellow tint on the screen
Weak WiFi signal
Weak cell signal (not necessarily specific to the Nexus S; T-Mobile's frequencies typically have bad building penetration)
Some apps running wild consuming battery
Missing apps in market (until Google updates to recognize 2.3.1 buildprint)
Accelerometer becomes "locked" after using Google Sky Maps requiring a reboot to free
Ringtones changing on their own following reboot/USB plugin (Push the .mp3 to /system/media/audio/ringtones to stop this *requires rooting*)
Stock launcher has home screen/scrolling lag issues (not present on market launchers like ADW/LauncherPro)
Home screen icons on stock launcher randomly disappear, disappear after move, or show up in folders they weren't moved to. (not present on market launchers like ADW/LauncherPro)

Q: There's no LED Indicator? What are those two circles next to the speaker?
Correct, like all Samsung devices thus far, there is no LED indicator light.

Actually not true, the Galaxy S Epic 4G does have a LED notification light.
Q: Is tethering free?
No, tethering is not free. T-Mobile charges for this service. That being said, people have and still do tether without paying for the service with little to no consequence. T-Mobile seems to track the User Agent of the browser you're using on their network, and it is possible to mimic the Android browser's user agent on a desktop PC and tether undetected. In the event that T-Mobile discovers you tethering, you will receive a text message and all internet traffic on their network that doesn't contain the Android UA string will be redirected to an official T-Mobile site encouraging you to sign up for their tethering service.

This is wrong.
Tethering is free and included with the Nexus S as long as you have a normal data plan with T-Mobile (not any $5.99 or $10.00 T-Zone hacks/etc.). There is NOT an extra special $10 add-on tethering free.

Negative. As of 11/03, T-Mobile has begun charging for this service.
Source: http://www.tmonews.com/2010/10/t-mobile-launching-14-99-tethering-plan-november-3rd/
Android 2.2 introduced the ability to hotspot tether regardless of a paid service on nearly any device(and before that, this was available through some market apps). I believe some have had this ability "disabled," in the sense that it doesn't show up in the Wireless & Networks menu(such as the G2, though this was corrected in an update) but through apps such as AnyCut you can still activate the service and tether.
So, once more, you CAN tether without paying for it, however, T-Mobile may start redirecting your web traffic that doesn't contain the Android UA string to their website. They've been super inconsistent in their enforcement (a good thing, if you ask me!).
EDIT: After looking through the "services" options on my T-Mobile account, I don't see anything about a tethering plan. If other folks could take a peek and let me know, I'll revise that section and make the correction.

Understand that the development section for more detail on rooting / unrooting, but would greatly appreciate if you could post specific links in your FAQ to threads that you would use to root / unroot.
Am a newbie and since I see more than a couple of threads on the subject in the development section, I would greatly appreciate it if you can give links here based on your order of preference (after all its your thread) if there are more than one ways.
Point is a link in the FAQs would give more greater confidence

Updated to include links to two threads in the development section which should get you on your way.
The first one will help you setup ADB and the relevant drivers needed to input commands to the phone from your PC. The second is the actual rooting method and custom recovery installation.

I'm well aware of which forum I am in and which phone I have.
The option was removed in the G2 and added back in via OTA update, it was also there on the MT4G at launch. I'll admit even setting my device to to show as one of those still does not pull up that option under services. I'm willing to believe that perhaps T-Mobile announced their intention to charge for the service then decided not to.
However, just to point out, the Nexus S/Nexus One are not special phones(as far as T-Mobile are concerned) on T-Mobile's network and thus entitled to special privileges. They are subject to the same rules and regulations as any other phone. In any which case, I'm going to make an adjustment to that section to note the ambiguity.
Is it just me or does the Nexus S seem to be more riddled with problems on release than most other phones? Perhaps it's just because of high expectations after the mind blowing release of the N1?

Not really. Every device has it's bugs and issues at release, the Nexus One included. Touch screen wigging out randomly, capacitive buttons misaligned, the relatively easy "death grip," and just generally (at least for me) weak 3G connection. My favorite was when the Nexus One wouldn't send or receive any text messages or phone calls.
We should also keep in mind that Gingerbread itself is brand new as well.

Q: Can we port SenseUI/Galaxy S apps to the Nexus S?
Most likely, no. Those apps typically require the Rosie/Touchwiz framework in order to function. You can have those apps when and if a developer decides to port those ROMs in their entirety.

we might see some ports over in due time.
they guys over at SGS are already in the process of porting the SenseUI
once they are done with that feast, it'll be a lot more doable to bring it to Nexus S

Can't say that I have. Are you talking about missing apps, or are you getting some kind of error message?

[APP][BETA][2.1+] MyBluCon v1.0 & MyBluIME v1.0 - Bluetooth kit to HID devices

So you buy a bluetooth mouse but your ginger won't connect it?
Or you have an bluetooth keyboard and can't write at your ice cream?
I made two apps to help users with bluetooth HID devices. They are quite simple apps, and can be very helpful.
You will need:
* root
* busybox
* the xbin folder
* Android 2.1 or higher

It is an app inspirated by Bluetooth Keyboard Easy Connect (thanks Mike! - Mike's app: here). It have the same function to connect bluetooth devices, but not only HID devices, and isn't a service, is like an extension. You pair the device, and if the device don't connect, you open MyBluCon and select the device to connect and tap connect. Simple!
0 - Turn on Bluetooth on your Android;
1 - Pair your device with your Android;
2 - Open the application MyBluCon;
3 - If your Android does not have the necessary system files, the app will install, just wait - is needed allow superuser (aka root) and have Busybox installed;
4 - Your device once paired are listed on the screen, see its name and its index ([1], for example);
5 - In the edit box, type the index number of the device you want to connect (1, for example);
6 - Click "Connect my device";
7 - Wait and done!;
8 - When you are finished using the device you can disconnect it from the app, for some button on the device itself or simply turn off Bluetooth.
OBS.: On your system, even with the device connected you will see "paired but not connected", because this app don't update the status on labels.
=============================
MyBluIME:
It is an app used to patch the Android issue what, even connected, the bluetooth keyboard don't writes.... So this app bring to you an solution to use your bluetooth keyboard connected at the Android, the keyboard don't get connected at the app like the market apps, so it don't lost connection (I'm assuming what you won't run away from the device). Is just install, and set as your IME.
0 - Turn on Bluetooth on your Android;
1 - Pair your keyboard with your Android and connect it;
2 - Open the menu and go to input options, enable MyBluIME and select to use;
3 - If your Android does not have the necessary system files, the app will install, just wait - is needed allow superuser (aka root) and have Busybox installed;
4 - Try to write at an notepad.
=============================
Use it by your own risk. But is safe. Make your back up, just to ensure..
I hope you enjoy.
If won't work, copy the bluetooth.zip content into your xbin folder, and give permissions to execute the binaries.
Ensure that you have busybox and root.
This was tested at ST15i GB and ICS rooted and with busybox, using a BT mouse from Multilaser and a generic, Apple like, keyboard from Clone.
PS: The bluetooth.zip content isn't by me, is just an collection of recompiled tools, to manage bluetooth stack for linux, what work at android.

thanks very much my freind. your work is amazing for me. i have the thinkoutside keyboard and unbelievebly i managed to connect it to my mb511 (motorola flipout) and actually type.
just two quick questions when i turn my keyboard off and then back on again so i have to put it into pair mode and pair it again with MyBluCon. For some reason it doesn't seem to remember the fact that it was paired. (although if i turn on the keyboard without pairing it again with MyBluCon and it is only paired with the main bluetooth settings then what happens is every time i type it resets the bluetooth altogether)
my second question is that after i installed MyBluIME when i tried to open it then my phone gave me an error 'activity not found-com.juliano.MyBluIME' so i am not sure as to what i am doing wrong
p.s. i copied the zip to xbin already and edited the permissions
thank you so much

Thanks buddy!! Glad to hear that. Well if the keyboard writes, you don't need the MyBluIME, but download again and install MyBluIME to see if happens again. If the problen don't get solved, would be helpful send me logs from the logcat, using this https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.jtb.alogcat&hl=en.
About MyBluCon, this app only deal with the connection, once the device paired at your system.
I mean, even at ICS with support for my bluetooth mouse I have this same behavior. Our bluetooth devices (such keyboards or mouses) are paired, but the device need to be at discovery mode next time, while we triggers the connection by our system, when we turn the device on and wish connect it again. Is how actually the Android system connect with HID devices, once paired, for correct use, you need to put your device (the keyb in this case) in discovery mode and trigger the conection.
The bluetooth connection can be reset because, in case of a keyboard, you maybe use an PIN code to safe conection, so the next time you turn on your keyb this code can be reseted and Android disconnect and reset the conection to you be able to pair again with a new code. In ICS with my bluetooth keyboard this happens also.
Just to sample, I only use MyBluIME because the ICS can handle the connections even with these annoying behaviors.
You can find some tips in the peripheral manual.
BTW you always can send me logs. Thanks again!
For app logs and for contact or more for people at XDA and outside, I offer this e-mail [email protected].

Well, lets investigate! Try reboot the phone and turn off the keyboard, now turn on your bluetooth and with your keyboard already paired, turn on your kb, the state at the system must be the "paired but not connected", try to connect with myblucon, if the message "device busy, off or out of range" happens again, try to hit once the button about connection at your kb (I think any bluetooth device have a button to connect) and connect with myblucon again, if even this don't work, hit and hold for 5 seconds or more the button of connect at your keyboard and try to connect again with myblucon... so if you read until here and your keyboard don't get connected, send me the log of the logcat to my e-mail and take a look in the manual of the keyboard maybe you can find some tip.
I will use the log information only for fix the app, and I won't use for another purpose. I need the logcat because I need see the entire system behavior about bluetooth.

Ok so i did further testing with another phone and seems like my phone is the issue, doesnt matter what bluetooth keyboard i connect (tested 3 of them) they all sit on paired but not connected. my bluetooth headset works fine though on the phone, i am starting to think that its my actual phone that might be having a problem, as i tested the same bluetooth keyboard on a motorola device and it connected by the default bluetooth connection and i was away typing but my rooted lg optimus 2x 2.3 gingerbread is not working, i have been trawling through other places to see maybe i need to place files somewhere in the directory structure but have had no luck,
like this link states where the bluetooth files should be but i dont have file structure after data shows as 0 items in it. Any ideas? this is the statement someone else said but i dont have that structure.

Yeah, I made this app to try patch this issue, because many androids, mainly old versions have this bad bluetooth support, even my phone.
So I searched about your quote, then I found THIS.
Well, I was looking here, at my phone the structure to this files are
/data/misc/bluetoothd/<A BLUETOOTH ADDRES>
and here I found the "linkkeys" and the "names" files. I will try this tip after, because I'm at my work now.
BTW, this is the first time I read this tip, so I don't have ideas xD, and my "names" file is empty also.
And even the Xperia P, for example, have the same issue of the bluetooth connection...
Is strange that you don't have subfolders in data folder.... maybe your explorer can't show?
So let's investigate, me gusta :silly:. Thanks for the reply.
this is what i see using a root explorer
Ideally if i could if i can get a copy of the bluetooth files id just copy them into the specific locations.
do you have an email i can email my screenshots to? or should i just load them online by the image shack or something?

Here is the screenshots of the Root Explorer showing nothing under my data folder, so there must be a place where bluetooth keeps its information, I have searched for those files you stated like names and linkkeys and they dont exist :S so what i was thinking is trying to build them manually and import those files from someone elses structure into my phone to see if that resolves it? what you think?

I'm starting to thinking what you have that structure, but aren't listed because de folder name with numbers are a bluetooth address like B0:B1:C2..... and the explorer have problems with ":".
But i'm posting now my files, I have problems to copy due the fact of the ":" stuck the root explorer copy, so in the folder "00 00 00 00....." put your bluetooth address, rename to 00:00:00... via command line, after you paste under data folder.
BTW, I can see all the content of each file using the Notepad++, but my root explorer don't show the same.
The problem is the explorer, but I found something new to dig.... :silly:
EDIT: About your tip, I found some descriptions about the files... not sure if are exactly the same files, look here
I've posted the source codes of the two apps, enjoy.
So... more than 2k views, around 5 downloads of the source, almost 100 downloads of the apps and nobody find more issues, nor send logs, even nor complaint?
My hope is who downloaded the source, will make an better app, and who downloaded the app will send me feedbaks. I'm certainly what we all need/wish a fully functional app to improve the android bluetooth stack.

thank you so much for this. i am typing on my cm9 touchpad right now because of this. had been trying to use easy bluetooth connect but was constantly having issues with losing connection and not being able to get it back. this connected right away. i will report back any issues i run int. the only thing i am running into no is that even though i am typing it must not be recognizing any input because the screen is stilll timing out as if i am not touching it. do you think there is anything that can be done about that other than setting the screen time out later. again thanks for this.
edit- ok i am a little confused about these two apps. i was running into a situation where it would pair but would not show up as an input device and no type. so i was using bluetooth keyboard easy connect. as i said it was just not consistent. so i downloaded both of these. i did mybluecon and then blue im eveything was working fine except the screen would time out. now after a reboot i could not get the keyboard to connect. even with blue ime in use. so i disabled it and reconnected using mybluecon and i am back up and running again even though my normal android keyboard is selected and not blue ime. do i need both? if not based on my situation which one shoud i use? again thanks for these and appreciate any help you can provide.

Nice dude! In your case you will only need the MyBluCon, because you can type normally just connecting the keyboard.
Since your keyboard is working without MyBluIme, take an nice IME, take a look:
SwiftKey 3 - see the free version
External Keyboard Helper Pro - see the free version
Null Keyboard
The MyBluIME is for androids what even connected, the bluetooth keyboard won't type. When the Android natively recognize an keyboard, you can type with or without IMEs, and each IME have an behavior to deal with native keyboards, such layouts, no screen keyboards, etc etc.

[HTC U11] No Audio (both ways) during calls?!

I'm at the end of my rope here and I'm loosing patience with this very strange problem:
Some time ago, I received a HTC U11 from a friend. Since I came from a impenetrable (AT&T locked) Samsung Galaxy S7, I didn't bother testing the U11 before tinkering with it. I missed the freedom of a custom OS so much, that I just wanted that back again. So I don't know if the phone had worked with the originial software on it.
Naturally and right away, I unlocked it, flashed TWRP (3.6.1_9_0) , LineageOS 18.1 (2022-02-19), as well as Magisk (v24.3) and a core version of the GApps (NikGapps Core ARM64 2021-05-01) as to bloat my system as little as possible.
Now, everything seemed to be in working order. I can install and use any app like I would normally. Strangly enough, I can even send and receive speech messages in WhatsApp (haven't tried any other messenger app though).
However, if I try to make a phone call (through 3rd party apps like WhatsApp as well as "classical" phone calls alike) there won't be any audio, in neither directions from either source. Can somebody just...... I'm not that much of a noob, usually, so, HOW?
Starting out, I had another issue that a call (incoming or outgoing) would not be visible even in the task manager. I could solve the issue by reapplying a "special permission" to the phone app so it was allwed to pose itself on top of the other layers. Still, there was no audio - so could it have something to do with permissions?
Or am I missing an important (background) up with the core version of the GApps?
What I've tried so far:
- All the wipes up to and including a complete factory reset.
- Superficially checking, if I missed something during installation (nothing immediate springs to mind).
- Trying a different phone app (contacts+).
- Checking permissions of phone app.
- Trying loudspeaker and normal speaker settings.
- Using a land line to connect to my phone to check if there's any audio in either direction.
- Banging my head against the wall...!
Please help me find the reason behind this issue. It's just completely non-sensical to me that I can send and receive audio messages but my audio doesn't work during calls in both ways.
I have that same problem.
I tried 5 different custom roms, I tried the kernel, it didn't work.
everything is working, only the sound on the phone call is neither going nor coming. same as normal earphone with bluetooth earphone.
audio recording in video recording, music working, microphone recording sound, but no sound in calls. There is an imei signal, but there is no solution.
Even emergency calls have the same problem.
why could it be?
Thank You for replying, OnlineBeyin!
And here I thought, I was completely alone in this. At least there's someone out there sharing the pain!
Well, here's to a strage new Problem.
In a funny way, I love this about digital technology; it never gets boring - as soon as you'd think you've got your stuff figured out, along comes a curious problem you've never heard of or even expected to be possible.
I havent found a solution yet but having someone with the same problem gives me hope, maybe together we can work it out.
I don't think it's about the custom ROMs since You tried five of them to no avail. What do You mean by "trying a kernel"?
I've come to terms with it since I kind of enjoy the silence that not being able to answer calls has provided, but there is some other strange behaviour that might hint at a possible solution I have not yet explored:
I've taken a look at the NikGApps package I was using (core) and I've realised that

I might need the basic version, since the core version does not provide an obvious dialer (What does "AOSP" stand for?) nor "Google Carrier Services", both of which seem quite important for phone calls.
Now me being a rather lazy fellow by nature, I thought I could just install the basic version over the the core version. In doing that, the clock app stopped working. I don't know why but opening it leads to the app crashing.
I've just seen Your post so I wanted to reply first rather then try a bunch of stuff and keep you waiting for an answer, but that's where I'm at.
So this strange behaviour (not being able to open the clock app) leads me to belive that...
<TL;DR>
Could there be an issue with different versions of programs running in the background?
(My point being Android is basically a customized version UNIX which has some similarities with Linux with which I have some modest experience with.
There I've experienced such issues around the OS telling me (paraphrasing) "the thing You want won't work like that because it is dependent on something that cannot be resolved automatically. You gotta have this version of that other thing to talk to that version of yet another thing and you have to solve that first. Then it'll work.")
So, long story short,
just to rule out this source of error, the next thing I'm going to try is to make a clean install with the full and original Version of GApps just to see if it'll work and go from there. If that won't help, I'll find out if there is something like the bash terminal from Linux just so I can see what the phone is doing exactly.
I hope this helps, if at least to spark an idea from somebody, anybody else!
I really want to get this phone working at some point, if only for sustainability's sake!
hi mate, still having the same problem...
Here's what I've tried and what I'm sure of
I tried turning off features such as google assistant voice listening and it didn't work.
I tested multiple microphones in the device with hardware test programs and the speaker that acts as a handset and it works fine.
The device is calling the other party, sending sms, just because there is a voice exchange problem, I have no doubts about imei etc.
It's purely a software issue. it's so clear
The first thing I would try would be to go back to the original rom. I haven't tested this before.
I also think that the device may have different criteria according to different countries, so there may be a conflict. But I don't think I made a lot of mistakes, to be honest.
It's very important to me that you share your every attempt.
I really want to operate this device. It's my favorite device.
In the meantime, I opened the device and tried to change the transmission films. I tried changing the bottom charging port. These are not solutions.

I had the same Issue with the sound in Calling etc... , this is a Problem with the DSP and when you use a CustomROM than use LineageOS_18.1-for_OREr_PIE_firm_with_DSP_patch-monthly_builds and after install ROM you must Flash this HTC_U11_DSP_TWRP_Flashable_OREO_2.33.401.19_install.zip that Fixes my Audio Problem and its work fine.
when you would more you find it here, HTC U11 - CustomROMs all with DSP Patch

With great pleasure I'm here to announce:
Can confirm this works! Just tried it today, the patch straightforwadly fixes this issue.
I had to skip the integrity check in TWRP to be able install it, but that should be obvious.
I already lost hope.

General Mekede M500s Review

First impressions
The shipment from Poland was just two days, that was something I was very happy with. It came in a unbranded box, and with a little manual.

The headunit before installing it in the car
Basically all 9 inch head-units look similar, and are having a universal form factor. That way I could atleast use the frame, from the EKIY D7: which I had only 3 weeks in my car, and I'm still trying to sell it. But atleast I got a partly refund from AliExpress, because of the fake Android version.
In a way these head-units are just like tablets, so no wonder it looks like one as well. However this one has no silly blue colour at the edges, something the EKIY D7 had and during the hot weather it already had some discoloration.
Then we have the back of the device: on the left are all the antennas. FM/AM, 5G WiFi, GPS and the 4G which I didn't install. Because it would require a SIM card, and already paying for mobile data on my phone. So instead I will create a WiFi hotspot, whenever I wanna use the internet.
On the top above the fan, you on the left the connection for the reverse camera video signal. Next to their are the ports for the USB dongles: there are three, I hooked one up straight to the cars original USB port.
Because I had the converter cable for that with the EKIY D7, and actually I have it connected as well to the headunit. But it seems not to be working, with my USB-C cable, and also the USB cable from the Viofo A119 dashcam didn't work.
So I'm guessing perhaps the USB port might only work, when setting the USB protocol to 1.1 instead of the current setting of 2.0 USB protocol. However I haven't tried that yet, as it would render the other USB dongles quite useless.
Because when I tried to change the USB protocol to 1.1 in the settings, it warned me that it would be limited to use for media only, just like how it was on the OEM Carradio. This USB port had been quite useless, so I never used it. I tried to connect my dashcam on it while the original car radio was still in the car. But that port didn't even provide enough power, to provide the dashcam for enough juice to run good. Since then I just have it plugged into a 12v adapter, with two USB ports that provide plenty of juice.
Back to the connector's above, the biggest one is for the fan and simcard dongle. I didn't find this particular useful, as it's a bunch of cable's I'm not using. It also contains the AUX and RCA audio connections, which I'm also not using....
So I had to bundle all these cables up with several cable ties, which was kinda a pain in the ass. As I had to do it in the car: I found it way easier, with the previous headunit. Which I only had to plugin the FM cable, GPS, Power cable and USB cables. Which I only could use one, because also on the unit the original USB port didn't work.
Below these connections, you have the Coaxial and Fiber optic connection option. However they are to no use for me, I didn't make any adjustments to the sound installation in my car. So everything goes through the harness. Which is the 16 pin connector on the right, the exact same that came with my previous unit. So I didn't need to bother to order it
User experience inside the car
I had the luck, that I had to drive about 300km's towards Frankfurt: the place where they mess up with our currency, and make it worth lesser than a dollar
But that gave me the chance to test the unit, especially the usage of Android Auto. Yes I know, why use Android Auto when you have a full functioning Android headunit? Well I will be getting to that in a bit.
So here we have the homescreen: I thought the car launcher looks pretty cool, because in the upper right corner you have your Google Maps. It works exactly like tablet mode of Google Maps, so it's fully functional and you could just use it like that.
Below there on the right, is a music player widget: very nice if you get your MP3's illegally from the internet, and load them on the headunit. There is 64GB of storage, so it would be doable to store music locally.
However I stopped downloading illegal MP3 files, because ever since I have a mobile internet data subscription. I started to use Spotify, since a time we even have shared premium account together with my wife. So that music widget is useless, as it seems nit to be configurable with Spotify.
The clock in the left upper corner is actually fine, it shows the time and date: what more does a person want? And on the left down corners, you can configure four favourite apps. It's very easy to change, just hold the button and can select any app you want.
(Wireless) Android Auto
Using the Car Link app, it's very easy to connect to Android Auto. To my surprise it even works wireless, however your phone needs to support it as well. This is basically where the 5G WiFi proofs it benefits, because Android Auto uses 5G WiFi in order to have wireless Android Auto work.
The downside of this though is, that WiFi in your headunit will be switched off: as it's being used by Android Auto. And after using Android Auto, it won't be turned back on automatically. So if you wanna use the WiFi for apps installed on the headunit, than you have to switch it back on by yourself after using Android Auto wireless.
Issues with wireless Android Auto
Another downside of wireless Android Auto is, that it might crash every once in a while: because even though the 5G WiFi frequency is used lesser, than the 2.4G frequency. Still there might be interference every once in a while.
For example: crossing the Dutch border to Germany, and the other way around. Both times Android Auto crashed, most likely because the mobile network get changed on that moment. The only way to reconnect in that case, is by closing Car Link and starting it again. Than the headunit will connect to your phone again, without breaking the law and taking your phone in your hand.
3-9-2022
I have figured out, that the main cause of making Android Auto crash: is because the mobile network is changed. Because I went across the border again, while using Android Auto.
Just after I crossed the border, the connection was loss and the mobile network changed to roaming. Than I just press the back button, which closes Car Link and after that start it again.
I wonder, if this could be automated by MarcroDroid. So far this only seems to be an issue when crossing borders, and ofcourse when the mobile network is changed.
Made a decision: wireless or wired AA?
Also keep in mind, while wireless connection is way more convenient than everytime you step in the car having to plug in a USB connector. On long journeys you might wanna disable the wireless option in Android Auto settings on your phone, because it seems you can't connected wired if you don't disable the wireless option.
Yesterday I tried connecting Android Auto wired, and I think it doesn't work: because there will be a conflict, the phone tries to connect wirelessly. While Car Link might be trying, to establish a wired connection. My wife got pretty irritated, when after a few mins Android Auto still wasn't connected.
So in the end I just disconnected the USB, started Google Maps on the headunit and drove off. Later I just started Android Auto wireless, without even once touching my phone.
But I'm finding wireless connection more convenient anyway: even though it takes a little bit longer, to establish the connection. Obviously wired is faster, when establishing the connection. And it won't suffer from any interference, by other wireless connections in the air. The crash at the border didn't happen, while I used wired Android Auto with the previous headunit.
Android Auto vs Google Maps
The main reason I prefer Android Auto, over native Google Maps on the headunit: is the fact that Google Maps runs in a tablet mode, which is fine for that little widget displaying Google Maps. But everything is very small and I can't see the instructions very well, as they are displayed at the bottom in a little green bar.
It took me awhile to actually figure out, where the navigation directions where being showed. Before I thought perhaps I simply had to update Google Maps, but that wasn't the case. Also nowhere to change this in the settings sadly.
Because it still keeps running in this tablet mode, where everything is very small. So that's not convenient, while using it in the car and trying to read the directions as showed by Google Maps.
Android Auto has none of these issues, so that's why I'm preferring Android Auto over native Google Maps on the headunit. It actually also has a part, where you can control Spotify. So that's very convenient while driving. And that shows why so many drivers, prefer Android Auto over built-in navigation inside their car.
I'm still considering though, trying another navigation app instead of Google Maps. Perhaps Waze? Or HereWeGo, just that I don't like that changes that navigation app underwent after they updated it. For example the Dutch voice, is a text to speech voice....
Sound
Don't underestimate the importance of sound on a Android head-unit: I did with the EKIY D7, which doesn't have a built-in DSP and the sound was horrible. One more reason it was replaced so quickly, even though this makes me loss some money in the end....
So obviously FYT or whoever has developed these interface, for controlling the sound on these UIS 7862 units. That's something they have put some effort in, unlike the FM Radio app which is very basic.
This is exactly the same as seen in T'eyes FYT UIS 7862 units, no difference here. It seems no matter which seller: all are having these highly configurable sound setting's. But I was actually already satisfied with the standard setting, so I didn't change it.
There is also a volume balance settings, which again I didn't bother to make any adjustments. But it might be useful to do, if you feel like you can't hear the navigation directions very well. In the settings I also found a option, that the sound level will increase depending on your speed. This is something my built-in OEM Carradio had as well, so I have it enabled at low setting now.
Screen quality
Considering both the EKIY D7 and Mekede M500s are having 1280x720 IPS displays, I do find that the display inside the EKIY D7 is of lower quality. Which makes me think it's a full fit screen, as described in the image below.
However I find playing videos on YouTube usually a good indicator, for showing the screen quality. As it's fast moving images in full 1080p resolution. So I played some of favourite music.
Don't try this while driving though, but it might be nice to be able to use YouTube or any video playback while parked. Ofcourse you would need an internet connection.
Bugs
How difficult is it to fix bugs? Well for many years, these head-units suffer from a bug which deletes your Google contact's. It happened on the EKIY D7 as well, so it's not something new.
I did however find a workaround: the issue occurs, because your contacts are being synchronised by Google. However the contact list on the headunit is empty, so this synchronises to your phone once connected by bluetooth.
Many users have suggested to turn of allow sharing of contacts settings in bluetooth, but that results in not having your contacts on the headunit. So instead you should go to User>Google Account> and put off the synchronization of contacts. That fixed it, and than the bluetooth simply transfers you contacts to the headunit without deleting it.
Just like how it worked on my OEM unit from Suzuki, but if you don't use Google for you contacts. Then this bug would most likely not effect you.
Another bug I found, and also already read about on XDA: is the fact that once you change the UI, in this case UI29. After a reboot, or once you start the car again? It would change back to the standard UI.
So I went to UI settings again, and saw UI29 was still selected. I selected it again and saved it, but I'm guessing perhaps next time I get in to the car. The standard UI might be back. Which I don't mind to much, I'm finding the different home screens quite similar anyway.
Reverse camera
When I first checked if the reverse camera was working, I had a black and white image. So I though perhaps it was a feature of the Starlight Night Vision from my GreenYi AHD reverse camera. So I spend a half evening on Google, trying to figure out if black and white image was normal.
In the end it turned out, the headunit settings for the reverse camera wasn't in AHD yet. However the reverse camera works fine, although I still have to put a Car Camera Filter between it. I ordered one from AliExpress, but shipping will take awhile. So until I get the filter, I will have to live with some interference inside the image.
Interference Reverse Camera Celerio
Hello there, Recently I have installed an Android head-unit inside my Suzuki Celerio, which before had a simple but well functioning Bluetooth Car radio with cd player. The main purpose of installing a screen in my car, was in order to install...

Fake Android = 20% money back
So as I already reported: Mekede is selling these head-units with fake Android 11 on it, while this doesn't effect the unit in a single way. Because it's just a editable number in the build prop.
But I saw it as an opportunity to get 20% of the purchase amount back: I paid $ 232,77 for this unit. And I got $ 50 dollars back from AliExpress, because of proofing it runs fake Android 11. So that makes the price for the Mekede M500s totally $ 182,77 totally.
I probably will even get back a little bit more that € 50 because, when I bought in dollars: the exchange rate was still one to one. Now it's like € 1 = $ 0,99 and AlliExpress, will pay you back in the currency you bought the item.
In order to get the dispute succesfully through: where you show the actions you follow, to proof the fake Android version. So install fake device test first, before staring the recording. And ofcourse describe how you proved it's fake. Just taking the picture won't be enough.
Also don't expect a full refund or 50% or whatever, AliExpress most likely don't give you a higher refund of 20% but feel free to round the number up.
But no matter if the device displays Android 13 and running Android 8.1 it going be the same, for AliExpress. Even though the impact is bigger, when a head-unit is running such an old Android version. In this case I have no problems with Android 10.
Verdict
For the time being, this is my verdict: keep in mind it's based on a short user time, but that's mostly the case. I might update the review, when there are new things that I find worth mentioning.
In my opinion it's clear why the FYT Based UIS 7862 is among the best choices, when picking a Android Head-unit. No matter if you mainly wanna run Android Auto or use it as a dedicated headunit, running navigation apps and music directly from it.
Because I was ignorance at first: mainly wanted to have Android Auto, I thought a cheaper headunit would do just fine. And well that was the case, but the sound was horrible. It was to slow for running any kind of modern app etc, and even not giving the full Android Auto experience.
So with this headunit, everything is really quickly running: no slowing down, other than waiting for wireless Android Auto to connect. You can run whatever apps you want and most likely it will work.
I only don't think these Android head-units are meant, for people without any technical knowledge. It isn't plug and play at all, because there are some settings to be taken care of. Some bugs which might annoy you and wanna smash the headunit, all of this makes Android headunits not suitable for the non-technical people among us.
And if you are very reliable of using your phone for making phone calls: run away while still possible, because ofcourse when the calling is already working. The microphones in these units are very basic, having no noise cancellation.
Tweaks and fixing problem's
In this post, I will describe the tweaks or methods, I used to fix annoying issues with this unit. Which shouldn't exist in the first place, but well you get what you pay for
( You pay for the hardware and headunit software, but don't expect support or these Chinese companies to fix these issues. Some exist for years.... )
Fixing Messed-up Google Maps...
One issue I described in my review, was the messed-up Google Maps. It seems this is caused by the Frontapp, that widget kinda thingy on the right upper corner that displays permanently Google Maps.
In order to fix that, you basically have to use an launcher which doesn't contain this Google Maps Frontapp. Or because the launcher will also go back to the default one.... even though you change it in factory settings.
FrontApp for Teyes - Apps on Google Play
Change Teyes main screen application easily
play.google.com
Or use FrontApp for Teyes, which enables you to change this FrontApp to any app you like. For example Spotify: just keep in mind, this way you can't close it.

Make use of the 5G WiFi
Fellow Dutch @TweakNL made me aware, that you can configure your mobile WiFi hotspot to be using the 5Ghz frequency. One reason to do so, is to avoid interference by bluetooth which uses the same frequency band as WiFi 2.4Ghz does.
It makes the WiFi more stable, hence no need to worry about a unstable WiFi connection. Actually the 5G is also the reason, Android Auto works wireless on these units.
Car launcher that keeps changing back, do the default launcher after picking another launcher from factory settings.
I found this issue very annoying: you can select 5 different launchers, from Car Settings. But it would everytime change by to the default one, kinda forcing you to stick with it. At 4PDA however I found the solution:
Q: Launchers (themes) spontaneously switch to others after sleep / reboot / other actions
A: Settings - Device - Applications. Disable the Digital Wellbeing App

Splitscreen
It might not come directly in mind: but using Splitscreen can actually be very useful, and isn't difficult to use at all. I tried it with the FM-Radio app and Google Maps, and I could control both apps without needing to switch between them.
Nice review. (Apart from the fact that I do not understand that you buy an expensive unit to run AA )

MP3's on your unit don't have to be illegal. I have a large CD-collection which I completely ripped to flac for my home installation and to mp3 (preset V0) for my car. You have the legal right to make a backup/copy for yourself, at least in the Netherlands! I have over 2500 songs on my unit (6000 at home as I don't play classic music in the car), where maybe 80~100 are indeed illegal as they are popsongs I like, but I don't like the entire CD (at all).

I am not sure whether your statement is entirely correct. When you use Google Maps in the launcher it runs as some kind of widget. Joying shows in their youtube videos showing AA that they run Google Maps in full screen which makes it much bigger.
On my previous PX5 and sc9853i and current uis7862 I always run my unit on my phone hotspot also giving me full-screen or split-screen Google Maps, with or without Spotify (not anymore, tried that shortly), radio or music player.

I explained that just now, at the end of the verdict for now. It took me awhile to finishing the writing, and I haven't even been able to take a all the pictures I want. As my wife gets annoyed, when I'm frequently going to my car hihi.

Ofcourse I'm aware of that, but I don't know many Dutch people from my generation who didn't download illegal MP3's and for a long time you actually could just do it. They only went behind the big fishs.
I however used to download K-pop, as I could impossible import the CD's from South Korea. So I used to burn these MP3's to CD, in order to play them in the car. Yes my old Carradio has a CD player, but I haven't used it years.
You could install something like tasker, macro-droid., Llama or Easer to check for the connection. If AA or CarLink is no longer running, you could start WiFi again.

Thanks, I really need to try this when I have time.

Well I didn't take a picture, else I could have simply showed it. And I tried to find an image on Google, with this what I think is the tablet interface.
But Google Maps looks the same in both the small widget, and full screen. Maybe I might try a launcher, without the Maps widget. Because I find these widget's, more of a gimmick.
I changed the default GUI to something else because of problems. When the unit starts it opens google maps on the home screen. When i try to open fullscreen the layout is messed up see the image.
When i take a other UI without google maps loaded in a small window problems are gone. Also see the other image. I masked the streetnames.. you can see on the messed up one the green bar and the missing of directions and current speed etc.

Well that's precisely what I was trying to describe: so in my case, it looks like messed-up one and I really kept thinking it was a tablet ui. But now it makes sense, Google Maps opens automatically in that widget.
I thought the widget could be quite useful, but this way it's messing more things up than doing good. Unless Google Maps isn't your choice, than it doesn't really matter.
But this made me prefer Android Auto, even though it takes a bit to start. Simply because the UI of Google Maps wasn't messed up this way. Because in a way it might be easier, to use Google Maps straight on the headunit instead of Android Auto.
How much I do love Android Auto, I must acknowledge that it has it downsides. Especially when setting up destination's, if you didn't search it recently. Than you need to give a voice command, and Google Assistant never seems to understand me....
Or it should be something straight forward as: DM ( drugstore in Germany) than most likely, it will bring me to the closest. But when my wife, wanted to go the Chinese restaurant. Ofcourse when I tried to pronounce the name, it wouldn't understand it.
You could change the widget to open youtube, very usefull if you want to see the settings of youtube on your home screen :') :')

Oh really? How to do that? Because I just saw, some people display Waze inside this widget instead. I have also been wondering, if I could play Spotify with that music control widget.
The idea of having a little map in the widget, is nice: but not if it messes up Google Maps. So instead I might use another navigation app, like Waze?
It was sarcastic why the hell you want youtube settings on your home screen haha. Maybe Waze works okay but i dont want to use that.
No me neither, but if it displays in this widget then it's totally fine. Because then I could use Google Maps normally.
I just don't know yet, how to change it? Is it just changing the default navigation app? Or how does it work, because if you tap these widget's no settings popup.

Actiually it is wrong to call this a widget. It is a special way that Google Maps can use to display itself, also like the "small" popup that can be displayed in the bottom-right if you have another app open.
User König (aka Boorondook) on 4pda wrote the app "Frontapp for Teyes" that you can use to display almost anything in that Google Maps area. It can also be downloaded from the Play Store: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ru.fytmods.frontapp (see Video)
He also wrote the "Widgetupdater for Teyes" but that one costs money, and that is for the widget (left side; the real widget )
Edit: Sorry. I had copied the incorrect link in the Video link

Ah okay, I didnt know better than that these things where called widgets: this term I learned from KDE, a Linux user interface. But thank you for the app, than I can use it to display Spotify instead.

I didn't say it correctly either. I corrected my post. It is actually a Launcher function enabling a display area where most apps can be "pushed into".
The launcher only allows for Google Maps (and Yandex Navigator IIRC). König (Booroondook) made an app that allows you to alter that configuration setting (it is nothing more than that, but very cleverly found by him) to make it possible to display almost any app there.

If this display area didnt mess up Google Maps, when using it full screen. Than actually I would have though its a nice feature, to have a map on the car launcher. Actually when ordering, I found that home screen looked kinda cool.
But in daily usage, I feel it's a bit of a gimmick. On Wednesday I'm going try these things out, mentioned in this topic. I'm taking a bit of break, of everytime sneaking out to the car for testing stuff.

That was my opinion already when it came out first on the CC2. It is just eye candy. In practice it makes your launcher more rigid instead of more flexible.

Which launcher are you using currently then? I don't feel the need, to really change it: but at least I wanted that messed-up Google Maps gone.
AGAMA Car Launcher - Apps on Google Play
Home screen for car multimedia systems for Android OS (30 day TRIAL)
play.google.com
But I though of trying Agama Car Launcher, only you need to pay for it. That would kinda stop me, even if I can try it for 30 days for free. Currently I'm just using UI 29 with the little speedometer.
Thanks to the "Frontapp for Teyes" I was able to replace, the Frontapp with Spotify. So that means Spotify is running in that space instead, and than Google Maps runs normally.
Just the Spotify controls somehow don't display in Google Maps? ( yes it is, in landscape format on my phone, it doesn't control the Spotify controls either ) Could it be because landscape format? So tomorrow when driving to Den Haag, than I will be able to test Google Maps straight from the headunit.
Hence not draining my phone's battery: Android Auto uses a lot of battery from the phone, as the process finds place on the phone. So it would drain your battery, and with wired Android Auto the phone would hardly charge.

No offense, but Launchers are of such personal taste. I now use Nova Launcher but I have used CarWebGuru for quite some years (paid version). That doesn't mean I want to steer anyone to any launcher.

I know Nova Launcher though: used to use it with my Huawei phone, as I didn't like the stock Launcher so much. Highly customisable as far as I remember, and no limitations that these Chinese built-in launchers have.
For now I'm fine with these Chinese flashy launchers, even if they contain a lot of gimmicks. Anyway how to avoid that the headunit keeps changing to the default launcher? Without the need to flash something on a USB stick?
I have UI 29 now set, but when I switched the ACC on to install that app in order to fix the messed-up Google Maps. Than the standard UI was back, but after I changed Spotify to be in that front app. On that moment UI 29 was displaying again. I'm not sure if it's going stay like that.... if yes than its a nice by effect from this app.
If it keeps changing back you can ask me.. I posted a fix (looks like it) on the other topic.
