Here is whats happening! I go into an awful area with no cell service and when i return into an area with good service... It shows all my bars, 3G icon, but its all grayed out and will not return with color... Also i have no data connectivity at all. The only way to resolve this problem is a reboot. I have the Nexus s 4G KL1 radio... This has happened twice in 2 days. Can anybody tell me what this could be? I tried the KL2 radio and the same thing happened. So I went back to KL1. I am running Cyanogenmod 7.1 stable. Any help would be appreciated, I like this phone and dont want to have to go back to my slow Evo.
Happens on ICS ROMs. I switched back to GB because of that issue.
OHHH ok that makes sense since i was on an ics rom... That sux i love the ics roms to. Is this an issue they know about and are working on?
Yes I am sure the devs know about this issue. A lot of people already reported this issue on the ROM's threads. I think there was a fix in the CM9 repositories that was merged this week.
well thats good news since were i live its not good service and im in and out of service a lot. Thanks for chiming in and letting me know! I was wondering if i had a bad radio or some thing lol...
This happens to my I9020T as well (with stock ICS, Pixel ROM, and Brainmaster's Stock and MIUI ICS ROMs). So, it's definitely an ICS issue. My network connection won't reconnect after I ride the subway (underground, where there's no signal) for about an hour. The only way to fix it is by doing a reboot (enabling and disabling Airplane mode doesn't fix it).
I just tried switching radios: from KI1 to KF1. I'll update on the result later tonight.
Sounds like exactly what happened to me.
I went back to gingerbread. I haven't had the issue since!
Just out of curiosity have you tried the KL2 radio with CM9/Latest nightly and then toggle your Data Enabled or the data roaming? If that works it might save you the reboot. Settings, wireless & Networks/more, Mobile networks, Data enabled.
You could try toggling the data roaming too.
Yup tried it already

Ok it was worth a shot. When I travel to the UP, I get no data service what so ever. So I feel your pain.

I've tried enabling-disabling Data as well, and it doesn't fix it.
The weird thing is the same issue happened to my girlfriend's T-Mobile G2 with Gingerbread last week, when I unchecked the "Use only 2G network" setting on her phone and forgot to check it back. So, when she told me the issue when she got home, I re-enabled the "Use only 2G network" setting again, and her phone haven't had the reconnect issue ever since.
So, my speculation right now is this reconnect to network failure issue has something to do with the Nexus S' 3G/4G network type setting.
I definitely think you're right
I am having somewhat the same problem.
My phone keeps switching from UMTS:3 to HSDPA and back to UMTS:3
This is draining the hell out of my battery. But when I have it on EDGE 2G I'm getting good battery life.
the issue is not that big for me. I just give it a few moments with it in sleep and when I go to use it again it fixes its self.
Sent from my Nexus S using xda premium
Update!!!! I have since switch off of the I c s rom. I have not had the incident happen even 1 time since doing so. I am totally convinced it's on ice cream sandwich roms.

I doubt the radio would make a difference. I think the issue lies in the Phone application.
I could be misinformed here, but if i recall correctly, our phones radio is relatively stupid as far as radios go, and the intelligent parts are actually done as a part of the phone application. This only applies to CDMA Variants of the Nexus S, but it could be the reason that the ICS update was pulled (As thats where CM and others get the ICS version of the phone app.).
After taking the subway for about an hour last night, my NS actually reconnected when I got back up to ground level. One thing that I didn't do is listen to music (PowerAmp); I was always listening to music when I had those network reconnect issues.
Anyway, I hope this issue gets fixed in the upcoming official Google ICS update, that should be released in a few weeks*.
I've found that if you just stick it in airplane mode when you are about to go into known no service area and then take it out of ap mode when you know you have a signal you can save from having to reboot to reconnect.
My building at work is a tomb for sprints signal and it works for me every day w/o rebooting ...
To all of you having network reconnect issues -- do you use any battery saving apps, like JuideDefender or GreenPower? I use one, and I'm thinking that its network toggling internal API method has something to do with this issue.
Yesterday, I disabled my GreenPower app right before I took the subway, in which my NS couldn't receive any network signal for about an hour. Then, when I went back up to ground level my NS was able to reconnect to my network successfully.
I'll do the same test later after work and update back tonight.
About 3 weeks ago after installing the update of liquidsmooth 4.4.4 i randomly started dropping to 3g service in places that i normally had full 4g available. It has slowly gotten worse to where if im not on wifi, than the phone is pretty much useless. i normally have full coverage everywhere. so i originally thought that maybe something had gotten messed up on the update, so i did a clean install of liquidsmooth 4.4, and blackbird kernal and same thing still occurred. also tried carbon rom and slimrom, and no luck. so for the fun of it, i went ahead and reflashed the phone back to stock from backups and rerooted it, updated the modems and reinstalled liquidsmooth w/ blackbird kernal, and same thing. i have went through all the mobile networks settings and tried everything and nothing seems to help, idk if that update screwed something up or if its an issue that others have been experiencing as well, or if im just screwed and my phone phone is dying.... any help is appreciated thanks

I'm currently running OmniToad, and ran CM 11M8 for a short while. On T-Mobile at least, with the custom ROMs it's normal to see H+ only when data is being transferred; it will drop back to 3G otherwise. When I ran the stock ROM on the Relay, it would always say "4G" regardless of whether it was in UMTS (3G) or HSPA+ mode. Apps like SignalCheck or CellMapper will tell you which mode it is really in.
On the other hand, if data transmission is only going through as 3G, it could be a phone issue or a tower issue. Is LTE available in your area, or are they just getting it set up? I know when T-Mobile was upgrading the Chicago area to provide LTE, there were a few glitches here and there.
It was stupid for T-Mobile to brand HSPA+ as "4G" but that's a different rant.

yea LTE has been in this area for quite a while now, i had it with my S4 and it worked perfectly, i never had a problem with the service on the relay either up untill a few weeks ago the internet speed and and data coverage was great, not quite as fast as the LTE on my S4 but it was still more than adequate, i used to use the hotspot and stream netflix on my laptop. now i can usually get a text to send but calls usually fail and if i try and use the internet its impossible. it almost seems like its doing the exact opposite of what it should be doing, as soon as i try and use anything (not while connected to wifi) than it drops coverage to 3g/edge/ or to nothing at all. Im leaning towards the hardware failing side, but i figured i might as well give it a shot and post it and see if maybe i wasnt alone. thank you for your reply.
small note of background on me: first time posting ever in this forum but have been using the tools and roms from it for a long time, so im not a complete noob, but i definitely still have a lot to learn.
I was asked to also post this fix that I came up with in the general forum from the CleanROM thead, as it should help people having the same issue. The issue isn't actually related to that ROM but a broader M8 issue that I was unaware of and thought was specific to the ROM. It's been confirmed with multiple users having the issue that the fix below does indeed fix the random data issues that require a reboot/airplane mode toggle to resolve.
A fix for the 4G --> 3G, WiFi --> 4G, WiFi --> 3G, and 1X/3G --> 4G handoff issues that some people may be having is outlined below...
In a nutshell, we just need to change EVDO Rev A to "Enabled" instead of the 3rd "eHRPD" option in EPST.
Dial ##778 --> Edit Mode --> 000000 --> Modem Settings --> Rev A --> Enable --> Upper Right Corner Menu --> Commit Changes
Might cause a reset data connection with the transition due to a possible new IP or hamper simultaneous voice and data over 3G (which is possible), but it will allow the phone to establish a data connection on its own again and not get stuck on eHRPD 's random buggyness. Should transition back to 4G eventually as well
eHRPD basically for allows switching between LTE and EVDO systems seamlessly (no reset data connection from 4G --> 3G and back, slightly faster speeds, same IP, depends on tower...)
Changing this setting basically tells the modem in your phone to act more like a 3G phone when requesting 3G data access. Bypasses the hybrid-ness and just forces you on the legacy EVDO Rev A. network.
If the phone signal (4G is weak) at the time of the eHRPD transition, it can mess up. This change tells it to not bother with that and when the 4G signal isn't available just revert completely to 3G to register and not wait up for transition info. Makes it more cut and dry, and to be honest it does not really impact things. When the phone detects a 4G solid signal again it will switch back on all its own.
Same issue happened on the HTC Thunderbolt when Verizon was messing with things during initial 4G deployment. Only recent changes are the whole VoLTE ramp up, and that could be the cause of this recent crazyness.
To revert this change:
Dial ##778 --> Edit Mode --> 000000 --> Modem Settings --> Rev A --> eHRPD --> Upper Right Corner Menu --> Commit Changes
Thank you for sharing this! Very good find and positive feedback has been showing in response. Worth a try for everyone having these symptoms.

Isn't Android Revolution HD is in the Generic HTC One M8 section?
Sadly, this only works with VZW based ROMs. Anything with parts taken from other bases, or a GPE ROM it may not work and the code for EPST might be different/EPST might not work and/or the option may not be there.
That code doesn't do anything on the Viper rom

After making a Nandroid back up of your current system then do the edit and restore Nandroid if you want
But to answer the OP, yes. GSM ROMS will not have this option unless the Dev adds it in. Otherwise its a CDMA only function (I believe).

It works on my viperone 1.8, are you on the newer versions that you do not have the new verizon firmware for yet ?
This is great, I come from an HTC One S but also switched between that and a Galaxy Nexus so I could tell a difference in the way my signal acted and we have had signal issues with the HTC One S for quite some time now and it all seemed to stem from when we finally obtained s-off, seemed our One S was never the same, may have been placebo but I was worried it was happening all over again with our blessed M8 lol. The One S was not Verizon and may not be the same issue. I just tried this and it already seems better. Thanks very much. They still have not found a fix for the HTC One S

If you go back to 1.8 then it will probably work for you, 1.8 was the last verizon that worked correctly for your verizon firmware. I was on the 2.3 but had too many wifi issues so I went back to 1.8, which is less wifi issues now with this fix I seem to not have any wifi issues so far so think its working for me. I"am not going to update viperone until the new verizon firmware is out in a zip to flash in recovery, because the wifi issues are not worth it to update now.
Any more successful difference's people have since doing this?
I was listening to a radio show streaming app today on Wi-Fi and the app kept stopping. every 10 minutes or so after trying this fix. It was the first time I listened to this app with this phone but listen to this app all the time with my other phones and never have this issue. It was consistently dropping Wi-Fi and 4g wasn't picking it up. I am running CleanRom with Harmon Kardon. I tried disabling Harmon Kardon to see if that may have been the issue since I am not accustomed to using it yet and it seemed to work better without it but still dropping signal. The signal icons seemed uneffected. I guess I am going to remove Harmon Kardon see if that makes a difference before I revert back from this fix.
I did this and my phone now reverts back to LTE and doesn't get stuck on 3G like it had been doing since day 1. I was getting tired of cycling into and out of airplane mode. Thanks for this advice/fix!
Is this the bug I experience where I have 4G signal, but am "offline"?
If so, that has been driving me nuts. I am on the stock ROM, S-OFF Rooted. Is this present with the off the shelf version?
Reporting back after 3 separate complete wipe/reflash/restores on my M8. Here is my status as of now:
Tuesday: Tried flashing stock recovery and did factory reset. (didn't fix the handoff issue)
Wednesday: Tried flashing RUU then returning back to CleanRom 1.4 (didn't fix the handoff issue)
Thursday: tried the EHRPD fix listed below. So far today NO handoff issues! I don't want to jump the gun, but this appears to have done the trick. I have gone from 1x to 3G to 4G with no issues so far.

If anyone is using the Verizon M8 with a GSM sim and can't access the USSD code ##778# then go into settings -> mobile data -> preferred network -> LTE/CDMA and try running the code again in the dialer. Dont forget to change the preferred network back to Global after applying the fix by the OP.
This has worked great for me. Thanks for posting. Was incredibly frustrating to have to fight with the phone every morning on my way to work to get it to connect to 4g. I had to toggle airplane mode, switch preferred networks and even reboot or some times do all of the above - lol. Thanks again.
Apparently this is a known issue and per Verizon, they're working with HTC to fix it. But I've also read that the problem could be cause by running xposed modules which seemed to be the case with me. I'm s-off running stock and was fine until I installed xposed.

This fix does not impact Wi-Fi directly, just eHRPD for mobile data transitions. Sounds like the app is the problem. Have the same ROM with Harmon Larson installed - no issues.

Yup. Seems to be impacting certain phones regardless of ROM. I'd give it a shot and see if it helps. If not just change it back.
Big thanks to the OP. I've been dealing with the the eHRPD limbo since I got my phone in April. I live in a low 4g area and was experiencing text and mms problems big time. It was always happening when it was bouncing for 3g and 4g. When I would check the network details it would say eHRPD. I would constantly toggle airplane mode off and on and change network preferences to get it to work. Really annoying. Well I tried this last night and the signal is staying in 4g almost all the time and I have experienced no problems with messaging. I am running Viper 1.8 and had to kind of guess to find the edit button after entering the numbers in the dialer, for some reason the Edit button did not show up but it was there when tapped on it. After that it was easy. Thanks again for the help. I wish Verizon was as good.
Using Ting (MVNO using Sprint network CDMA) ever since I upgraded from CM11 to CM12 I get intermittent loss of cell signal at times. Every couple of minutes, regardless of where I am or how strong my signal is I will lose all cellular signal for about 20 seconds, including voice and data, and then it will pop back up just like it was before.
I've tried downgrading to two different radios and nothing seems to make any difference. Like I said before this problem didn't occur until I did a clean flash of CM12.. everything was fine with CM11.
I've even wiped/reinstalled CM12 with the same issues.
Does anyone have a solution for this yet?
I recommend keeping your radios updated to LRX22C. Where did you get your ROM from?
Sent from my Nexus 5 using XDA Free mobile app
Direct from cyanogenmod
From what I've gathered, it seems that sprint networks being unreliable on cm12 has been an existing problem that may get fixed in the future.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using XDA Free mobile app
Well I fixed it.. sort of. I had tried this before but I didn't reboot the phone.
SETTINGS / MOBILE NETWORK SETTINGS/ PREFERRED NETWORK TYPE
I switched it from LTE to 3G. Looks like I might not be getting LTE coverage but it's hard to tell as LTE is sketchy at best at home and at work... and in either case I'm on Wi-fi anyway. Not a huge deal.
I had tried this before but I didn't reboot the phone after making the change. As long as I leave it on 3G my cell signal never drops. If I switch it to LTE or GLOBAL then it will randomly drop as described above.
I'll retest things after each CM12 update I install see if we get one that works!

Were you able to find a solution for this that you could share?
Honestly no..I just keep it on 3G and there are no issues.
I tried about a week ago switching back to LTE but the display never showed LTE and I definitely wasn't getting LTE speeds and the signal drop returned.
TBH LTE coverage is pretty spotty in my area and I don't use a lot of data outside of Wi-Fi anyway so it's pretty much a non issue for me.
When a CM12 snapshot is released I'll probably try again.
I should add that I dirty flash the latest nightly almost every morning. When a snapshot comes out I'll wipe and clean flash things and go from there.
Update... about a month ago I did a full wipe, going back to stock, did the network updates, etc and all was well.
Then I did a fresh install of cm12.1 and every thing worked great.. Lte and all!
A couple days later I dirty flashed a nightly and got an exclamation point and no data (Wi-Fi is fine). I did find the sprint fix flash which allows me to do the network updates again from cm (had to switch to 1X for it to work) but that only yielded a temporary fix.
I did however find a workaround. If I go to my apn settings menu and change a setting on my ting (sprint mvno I use) entry then change it back and save then BINGO! I have Lte again...
That is... Until I get handed off to another tower.. Then I have to do the workaround again.
As the title suggests, I no longer have connection to LTE services, beforehand I could get full signals.
I downgraded back to cm11s, and installed the previous XNPH44 modem, still no luck.
I have also tried XNPH33, 30 and 25. I have even tried the ColorOS modem as well as the M9.
Furthermore, I have tried the *#*# secret settings, currently it is on LTE/WCDMA. I can reach H+ connectivity but still not LTE.
I live in Australia, and am with Vodafone. Meaning Band 4 is the one I need to connect to, (1850mhz I think.)
Please advise on what I should try next.
Thanks.

As written above I used to get full LTE coverage in my area. I even included the LTE band that the LTE broadcasts on.
It is also confirmed on Vodafone's website if you want to have a look.
Is your issue similar to this thread or do you simple just not have LTE, only and never get it on CM12?

Thank you!!! I have had my OnePlus One on cm 12s for about a week and the LTE has never worked since I upgraded. Just H+ works. And more than that - it keeps turning the H+ (3G) on and off which I think it's really killing my battery life!!! I have been trying loads of things to get my battery life back to what it used to, huhuhu. Turns out my APN got set to T-mobile somehow! I have Red Pocket mobile GSMT which runs on T-mobile and I always got LTE with it till the upgrade. (I'm in USA.) Just had to switch the APN from T-mobile back to Red Pocket 4G. The LTE works again and never cuts in and out!
