Hi all,
I tried searching but cannot find anything on this, so as my first post, here goes...
I have a Touch Diamond with official ROM (WM6.1). I want to get over the known "issue" that with the device set to pin lock after 0 minute timeout, it still locks automatically after 1 minute of idle time.
Of course, I found an answer on this forum, see, for example http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=291868: in the registry, set AEFrequencyType to 2 (instead of 1), which works as hoped as far as the device is concerned... it no longer auto-locks after any amount of time, but locks instead whenever it goes into standby.
The issue is this: Activesync no longer requires the pin to connect to the device and without pin can read ALL files from its memory, even if the phone is locked at the time. Setting AEFrequencyType back to 1 forces Activesync to require the pin even if it is not locked when it is plugged in to the computer. Does anyone know a way to force Activesync to require the pin... of course, I am looking for a setting on the device, not the PC, as I want to make it hard for anyone who might steal the phone (or if I lose it!) to read the data on the device.
In case anyone is wondering, I also found another workaround. Having set the pin timeout to some large time, like 30 minutes, I can then use a pin locking program, Zenyee's 'Pin Lock.exe', and create a wakeup event notification with Dotfred's Task Manager (seems very useful app for free!). This works, until I run FlexMail, which seems to intercept these notifications and prevent it from locking!! So, I have to override a soft key on the home screen to run the pin lock, then hit the power button to put the device into standby. Not too bad, but there must be a better way...!
Thanks in advance,
Martin
Just a quick follow up for anyone who may be interested. FlexMail DOES NOT intercept the wakeup events... however, because it causes a little processing to be done, it seems it can delay the device from sleeping for a while (a minute or two) whenever a full synchronisation is performed. So, the wakeup event, whilst normally quick to activate, can sometimes take a minute before becoming effective.
However, I now have a workable solution for me. Just as I said above, I set my Pin Lock timeout to something large, like 30 minutes. However, instead of relying solely on wakeup events, I have now installed Gyrator 2 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=427805) which is an excellent application for many reasons... I particularly like being able to identify the window class/title using the stylus-in event to identify the in-focus window! More importantly, for this issue, it has the option to both Pin Lock and Suspend the device whenever a certain criteria is met. For me, this is when it is held face down for a second. So, now I just do this instead of hitting the power button and I'm guaranteed to have the device Pin Locked on next wakeup. ActiveSync also requires the Pin as AEFrequencyType is the default value of 1. A perfectly workable solution.
All the best,
Martin
I strongly suggest you take this towards the Diamond section as knowledge about specific problems in specific devices are usually conversed over at that specific section.. more than here.
Thanks, but I think this is WM6/WM6.1 specific, not Diamond specific. The problem with AEFrequencyType set to 1 giving a timeout even with zero minutes is known and seems to be device independent. I just found that setting it to 2 to fix this timeout issue, as many people do, seems to prevent ActiveSync from requiring the PIN as well! Not a good result.
That said, my workaround solution is probably Diamond specific, sorry! Perhaps I should post in the original thread that I found out about the AEFrequencyType registry tweak?
All the best,
Martin
Here is a semi-fix. This trick will prevent your phone from shutting down but will decrease battery life somewhat.
1. Download "Load Monitor" from the Android Market.
2. Once installed, open the Load Monitor app.
3. Click on the Menu Button and Select Preferences.
4. Check the following Items:
* Add Notification
* Auto Start
* Wake Lock
* Only screen on
5. Go to "Update interval" and select 5 Minutes.
6. Although the Auto-start assures the app runs everytime you reboot your phone, if it ever shuts off, start the app manually; though you should haven't to do this step too many times.
Load Monitor keeps your phone from shutting down by preventing suspend via wake lock setting and by actively monitoring your load, the phone is always doing something. The main reason these phones shut-off is due to the processor going into suspended mode whenever it is not being used much and then it shuts off once it hasn't been used long enough. This trick worked for me, can't guarantee for everyone but a very good chance it will work.

Thanks!
There's an app for that. Captivate Keep Alive. It's on the market.
Or call AT&T to get a replacement since there is already an internal memo about this issue and date range of phones affected.

The only thing that's concerning about this is that they are calling it a software issue and not a hardware issue. If you are already on a newer version then you technically shouldn't have the issue any longer. But even on 2.2 I was, so I have been using Load Monitor for a long time now. Besides, some are reporting their replacement phones are refurbs that still fall into the same IMEI range.
Coming from the PC world, I feel like my tablet is very insecure. Email is always synced, app store & and amazon app store have full purchase authority etc. If I lost my tablet, I am thinking it would be a big pain in the ass. Does anyone here use the honeycomb built in encryption function? Does it slow the tablet down (as far as file transfers)?
One thing I like about a tablet is the "always on" functionality. The thing about encryption is that I would need to enter a password every time I turn the thing on. Is there a better way to secure the tablet?
Also, I have noticed that if I leave my transformer unattended for even a few seconds it turns off and locks. I changed the "screen off" option in setup to 3mins but it didn't seem to change this behavior. Am I doing something incorrectly? Is it possible to have the tablet sleep (or turn off... whatever it does) after a couple of minutes but not lock for X amount of time?
Just set up a pattern unlock screen. Takes about 0.5 seconds longer to unlock the screen but makes it secure. Couple that with encryption = fort knox. The only way someone can use your device then is to know the screen code, know your google account password or hack the encryption. Without encryption someone who knows what they are doing can pull files using ADB. But chances of a thief stealing it and knowing how to do that are slim to none.
The drawback is however that if you have the dock plugged in you still need to use the finger pattern unlock rather than just press the key.
I'm almost positive that this can be done, but I don't know how simple it is. I would like a way to make the pattern/PIN/password not happen immediately upon screen lock. Anyone who has used an iPhone has probably seen this option...you can make it not show the PIN screen until a specific time has passed...if you unlock the screen before that timeframe, it resets the timer.
Here's why I say I'm almost positive this is possible: the last company I worked for made this happen automatically when you used their Exchange email server. I could lock my screen, and it would not ask for my PIN if I unlocked it again immediately. I couldn't specify the timeout, but it seemed like it was about 5 minutes. I used ozmail, and I know it did it though the device administrator somehow, so I'm thinking it may have to be done programatically, but I'm hoping there's an easier way.
Any ideas?
All I do is turn my screen off manually when it goes in pocket. Then 10 min later timeout/lock time has passed but any time before then, screen turns on without having locked.
But in display settings I see "screen timeout" and in security settings I see "lock phone after period of inactivity".
I can set them to differ... Maybe it's your ROM.
sent from my Android via xda
Charge roms only have display timeout. It doesn't have a separate lock timeout, and we don't have any roms not based on stock.
*** App is now suspended, since it doesn't work in Tizen 3.0 and this OS has bezel blocking feature itself. Thank you for participation in this project! ***
Hi, I created app "ScreenLock Gear", because I want to monitor my sleep with locked bezel, eliminate turning screen on by my shirt etc. The mission of this thread is to make it comfortable for all of us.
So what is it?
Simple application for screen locking (bezel/screen/button).
Add widget -> Customise -> Tap to lock -> Enjoy locked screen
I uploaded new version (2.0) to Gear store. Description of the new version:
[Widget icons]
- Please see the first image in this post.
[Features]
- Battery friendly - CPU sleeps all the time, big battery saver (there is just listener in background).
- Widget for easy locking and customise settings.
- Supports both - AOD / Display OFF (for AOD is best to set lowest time to unlock).
[New in 2.0]
- Alarm / PIN / Call compatible! It temporary suspends ScreenLock.
- Customisation in widget.
- Unlocking by bezel (right-left-right-left).
- Option to see unlocking pattern progress, including clock and time to unlock.
- HOME button will temporary disable ScreenLock (until next display turn-off)
Again, thanks for the app.
I have not been out in the rain - when I use your app to lock my Gear S3, will it keep logging my walking/hiking/etc? Or does it pause other operations.
I would prefer it you keep it simple but I'm sure others will have requests for more options.
As I wrote elsewhere, when logging walks/hikes, the strap of my hiking pole hits the Back and On buttons and it eventually terminated the logging of my hikes. So this would be a perfect way to prevent accidental touchs of the buttons or screen from changing things.
Again, THANKS.

No, the ScreenLock has no impact to any logging. Because it does simple job: When DISPLAY TURN ON, call DISPLAY TURN OFF. It is like if you set screen timeout to 0.3 sec. So it is only shortening screen timeout, having no negative impact on battery life or influence of logging.

Yes, I will add more options, but primary I want to make it more comfortable to unlock.

Yes, it can be used, but now only with screen off. S health will continue to log your trip, but you can't see your statistics until you unlock the screen, which is not so comfortable. Maybe only on long hikes. It is in my future plans to enable this app on top of another app.
Thanks for testing
Great idea, I'll give it a run! Thanks for getting this out there
Used it on a 3 mile walk this afternoon. It appears to have worked fine. Shealth still informed me of my statistics at 1, 3 and 3 miles including pace, distance and heart rate. I played with the buttons while walking and the screen stayed dark (there is the brief message "locked") and did not interrupt my hike log. This walk was not as strenuous and steep as the one last week that prematurely ended when the pole straps pressed the wrong buttons. But since I was pressing randomly, it stayed locked.
I was easy to UNlock it and then to stop Shealth's logging.
Obviously, with the screen locked I could not see what the email alerts were but that is fine. I don't have to be permanently connected to my email.
Again, THANKS.
Thanks for the app. I've found I light them room up if I hit the watch while in bed. I may see if tasker can lock the watch at a certain time and maybe even unlock it. I don't know how difficult it would be for you but adding those features would be nice additions. Again, great job and THANKS!!
Konvalink, man, this bezel wake up was making my life miserable.
IMO the app works perfectly, no bells and whistles, just shuts the thing down.
So many thanks, also on behalf of my wife who was about to file.
Love ya man
Brilliant!
Brilliant idea! Thanks.
Thank you very much for this app. Maybe you can add the the back button for lock also.
I've been using this app every night for the past several days. Only issue I have noticed is that when I move my wrist, the watchface will show for 1/2 a second or less then give the "locked" notice. Overall tho, this works great and I really appreciate you sharing it with us.
Needs Polishing
A very essential app. THANK YOU! for sharing
Observations:
1. Hotspots are visible on the AOD screen
2. Momentary "screen on " before showing number of unlock tries
3. Delay in unlocking when a notification is active
Please continue the good work. Again, thank you.

Can you please clarify? Can't I use your app if I need Pin also? I use Samsung Pay, so it's mandatory to have pin protection.

The problem is, when PIN protection is enabled, I'm not able to monitor keys or run my app, since PIN protection is killing everything because of safety reasons.
But you can use it. Locking will work. Only unlock will be harder, because app has no chance to monitor BACK key for exit. I will try to solve it somehow, but now, this unlocking would work with PIN enabled:
- Press HOME several times. This will minimise ScreenLock app, so you can write your pin.
- Then you will see black screen, press BACK several times. Otherwise the ScreenLock will start on another SCREEN ON event.
So it's not comfortable yet, but it works.

- Counter of locks
[Notes]
- This is alpha version, so please try it and comment your ideas
- It is not compatible with PIN protection - too hard to unlock screen
- To explain the unlock pattern - you have to press the BACK three times in sequence of time 0.1 to 0.3 sec between every press. Because if I let here more time, it will delay global locking time.
[Future plans]
- Primary: make unlocking more friendly
- Make user to select different unlocking pattern
- Ability to lock screen on current app (S health)

HI again.
i need to have one particular app permanently on screen (Skydive altimeter) during a certain period of gime (approximately 5 min ). It's essential that the bezel doesn't interfere so it would be great if your app could block it but I must see the interface of Skydive altimeter. Is it possible?
Thanks great app.please make time based lock option or lock when detect sleeping
Great app. I got 4 days of working time with AOD in red font.
About unlocking: maybe full 360 bezel movement instead of clicking back button?
Hi,
First off, thanks so much for this app, I don't understand why Samsung didn't put this type of feature directly in the gear... Anyways, I'll test this tonight and see how it goes
However, is it possible for you to add an option page where you can decice how to unlock and if we can show the number of unlock tentatives? On my end, I would prefear if the gear stayed fully off, without showing the number of tentatives.
Thanks!!
More than happy with app
I used the app a few times hiking and find it working very well. It keeps S-health's log going and the underlying S-health app does not prematurely terminate logging of my hike or walk because something (like the straps from my hiking poles) has activated the Home or Back buttons.
And even though I have Samsung Pay activated and have a password/pin your app does not interfere.
THANKS VERY MUCH.
