Flip4Silence 2.0 BETA
Silence notifications when your phone is flipped - battery friendly!
Flip4Silence is back! It's just an BETA version but it already serves its purpose: Silence notifications when the phone lays upside down on the table! And the best thing about this, it doesn't eat up your battery (like other tools do)!
I just finished the BETA and I'm currently testing it. But as I think it could be useful to someone in this state I just made it public. Please be so kind and keep in mind that this is not the final and probably will not act as reliable as it should. I will do my best to fix any bugs which are found, so please report your problems back.
If you are a ROM chief or have a custom ROM installed:
I have planned to migrate this tool to a "one for all" tone silencer. Unfortunately this requires a patch (which is attached to this post) to allow the user to set the tones as the system defaults. The patch is also posted on the AOSP gerrit and may be accepted (don't know if they like the patch) and I will try to integrate it into CM9.
If you are a ROM chief and would like to integrate the patch and the (upcoming) tool feel free to contact me via pm.
If you are a user of a custom ROM feel free to encourage your ROM chief to integrate the patch.
Feel free to contact me if you have integrated the patch somewhere, especially if it's a ROM for the Galaxy Nexus or Nexus One as I would like to use it on my own phones
Attention:
If you had a previous version installed I'm very sorry to tell you that you have to REASSIGN every single ringtone you have selected with F4S Ultimate before again due to a internal incompatible change!
What it gives you:
Silence nearly every notification!
Is planned to be a full replacement for every ringtone picker (please tell me what you want from your ringtone picker)
It's nice to your battery as it's only active when something happens and not all the time.
More control over the sensitivity used (no more "low", "high", "normal", you are in charge now!).
MP3 ringtones are now supported! The UI is not really finished, it's at least planned to add the album covers to the list.
"Silence when user is present" - never get a notification sound again when you are playing with your device and don't need a audio notification.
What it can't do:
You can't use it to put silenced ringtones into the default settings. Please never ever put a silenced ringtone into your phone ringer or the default notification sound. It will just not work (and will never), trust me. However, you can put in a "unsilenced" ringtone (more later).
Currently the sensors will report strange results if you have vibration on while a ringtone is played. It lacks a good filtering, so it's not really usable currently.
How to use it?
It has currently no settings dialog at all, it is just a alternative to pick a ringtone. When you select somewhere a "Choose a ringtone now" button it will be an option which you can launch.
When you select your tones with the tool it will more or less look like the standard ringtone picker with some exceptions. On the bottom you will see a list with all ringtones you may pick from. When you select them, they will be played as a preview to you (just like the stock ringtone picker does). When you have found your ringtone just hit the tick button at the top bar and you are done. It will now silence this (and only this) notification when the phone lays on its display. When you want to discard your selection just hit the cross on the top, the back button of your phone or the home button, it's your choice.
The really interesting thing is the speaker icon at the top bar. It works the following way:
When you see the muted speaker (speaker with X) the ringtone will be silenced when you hit the tick button (sure, it will only be muted when the phone lays upside down). But sometimes you want a sound so be played everytime and not only when the phone lays with its back on the table. Then you can press the speaker at the top and it will switch over to a unmuted speaker. When you now hit the tick the selected tone will never be muted by the tool.
You can now start over and replace every notification sound with a one selected via this tool. Just pick a tone and hit the tick at the bar and you are done.
I'm currently using gingerbread and was able to replace the tones in the following applications:
Stock SMS/MMS
gTalk
Google+
Facebook
Flip4Silence
How does this sensitivity slider work?
It allows you to set the exact degree when Flip4Silence should recognize the phone as "lays on its screen". The range is from 0 (lays exactly on its screen) to 90 degree (stands on its bottom).
You can change the value with the slider or with the plus and minus button to a value which should fit your need (it lacks a testing mode, sorry :/).
The green part of the slice on the left is a visualization of the "snap area" where Flip4Silence will recognize the phone should be silent. You can transfer it to the real world when you put your phone with its bottom on the table which would be 90 degree. When you now tilt it slowly down to it's screen it would be 0. So you have actually moved it on 90 degrees of a circle which is what the image tried to tell you.
The settings are now this way because people reported that LOW and HIGH weren't enough to trigger it the way they wanted it. The dialog still lacks a "choose from presets" option but this will hopefully be added in the future.
As a hint here are the settings known from F4S 1.0 (which will suit the most people)
High: 20 degree
Normal: 25 degree
Low: 30 degree
So you say it's now save to use it to pick global ringtones?
Yes, in general it is. The picker maintains now a blacklist for Activities which aren't able to handle the special ringtones we return. This blacklist currently only has the stock settings blacklisted so it should work for most devices. But HTC/Motorola/Samsung may have changed ROMs in a way that they also changed the identifier for the SystemSettings. In this cases the blacklist will not work until I have added them
So as it's more or less save, here is the warning again:
Please note the fact that you should never ever use a "silenced" ringtone for the ringer or the default notification sound. The new BETA tries to prevent you from doing so (the little speaker on the top is not drawn) but it may fail! If you see a speaker in your Default Notification/Ringtone picker than please hit the "Report usage" button in Flip4Silence ultimate so I can add it to the blacklist.
What does this "Report usage" button do again?
As stated above it will send a report to me about the places where you have used Flip4Silence Ultimate to select a ringtone. Please only send the manual report if you have found out that your System Settings is not blocked from setting a silenced ringtone (as described above). Please also leave a short note here that you have send a report. Reports contain the same data as crashreports, so nothing is really special about them.
"Silence when user is present" does what?
Did it ever annoyed you to hear notifications when you got your device in your hand? Did you ever thought "Damn, shut up! I have seen the notification, no need to play a sound...".
If yes, then I have a solution for you: "Silence when user is present" does simply what is says, it blocks the notification sound when you are currently fiddling with your device and don't need another acoustic notification about a new message or anything else.
Of course it only works with sound which were set with this app and currently the switch is on a global base (will likely change in an upcoming version).
Okay, sounds good so far, where can I get it?
I will attach the newest version and the previous one to this post whenever an update occures. You can also download it on the Android Market
Why is this nifty app not translated into [INSERT LANGUAGE HERE]?
I will contribute at least a German translation once the strings in the program have settled down (one or two releases before the first stable will be released). If your favorite language is missing and you are willing to translate it by yourself please contact me and I will hand the localization files when the app has reached the pre stable state.
The icons used are nice, but the application icon is damn ugly dude!
Yea, I know. I had to make some of my own when I developed Flip4Silence so the quality is far from good. While I like the overall theme (the phone and the sleep indication) it's not really pretty as I'm more the coding guy than a designer. If you are a designer or know someone who would like to make some icons for this app it would be awesome if you would contact me. I can't provide any money for this as it's only a fun project but it would be worth a credits entry and publicity (it depends, but I expect a broad usage around the globe, just like the original Flip4Silence ).
Uh, who has done this cute icons you are using?
The icons used in the main view of the ringtone picker are from AndroidIcons.com. Thanks guys for this great set of free icons!

Do U think it is possible to also disable vibration on incomming calls? It was working on Gingerbread but not longer on ICS (at least for me)

Flip4Silence classic doesn't work correctly on ICS? Didn't knew that, sure I will try to fix this in this rewrite (the old app will not receive any update, everything will be reimplemented).
I will give it a try when I move the old code to the new codebase but I can't promise anything as I don't know whats broken and so don't know how it may be fixed.
But thanks for the report =)
OMG!
Just installed older version from market. I know why it wasn't working..."Keep vibrating" was still enabled.
Sorry...my fault.

I just release BETA3. As nobody reads the main post again, please note the following:
You generally don't have to take special care about the System Settings default sound picker as it's now blacklisted as it not supports F4S Ultimate. Consult the main post for more info about this. But If the little speaker at the top is shown for you in the default settings please hit the "Report usage" button and send me some info about your phone (again, more info is hidden in the main post ).
If you had a previous version installed I'm very sorry to tell you that you have to REASSIGN every single ringtone you have selected with F4S Ultimate before again due to a internal incompatible change!
Also I would like to say "Thank you!" to everybody who is currently testing/using this! I have not thought that so many people would try it! Thank you very much!

Why the BETA sign? What's not stable yet? And when do you plan to release a non-beta version?

It has the beta sign because it's rather untested and it's a very fragile kind of app as it operates at the border (or some steps beyond) of the android system.
I does things which were never intended by the developers, also I'm developing this thing alone. The beta sign will be removed when it's proven that it operates on virtually any phone from android 1.6 to 4.0 and includes all the features the original Flip4Silence has.
Currently everything is working as intended besides a bug I have just found (which is documented in the second post). A "stable" (I only release software which is at least usable for me) without the beta sign will come when I have done all the work. I can't tell you a date as this is not my job but I will do my best to release as often as I can.
BETA4 is out now!
BETA4 is out now!
It introduces a new feature: "Silence when user is present", please take a look at the first and second post for the changes in detail.
Besides that I had to wipe the caller database once again as the format changed again, so you have to reassign anything again (should be the last time, the format should be stable now...).
A sidenote:
I have not received any crash so far and it seems to work pretty good so I consider it now "stable enough for everyday use".
Thanks for this app, sounds good downloading now....

It's a ringtonepicker replacement, to use the app you have to reassign the notification tones of the apps you want to be silenced on a flip. Your system will present you a list of apps which are suitable for ringtone picking, just select Flip4Silence there.
"Silence when user is present" - never get a notification sound again when you are playing with your device and don't need a audio notification.
Man I have been looking for this feature since day 1 of owning a Android Phone! I'll help you test the app!
Edit: I goto settings>Sound>Ringtone phone> choose flip4silence>Local Media
Crashes every time

Once again, lesson learned: never ever say "it's working good, quiet good" as it will brake then =)
It's a problem in (at least) the artist list, I will fix it soon. Stay tuned for an update and thanks for testing =)
Crappy video I made showing how I made it crash: http://youtu.be/R_4v-AKSjM4 (done in about half an hour)
I also provided a logcat with warnings, errors and fatal exceptions. Don't worry about the rmt_storage lines though, that has something to do with the beta ROM I'm using.

Now that's cool, I have never seen a bug report video before . It should be easy to fix this, but I have one question:
How many MP3s do you have on your device (I don't need an exact number, just a rough estimation, something like "60 albums" or something like that)?
13 normal albums, 1 album of Super Smash Bros (which has about 200+ songs ) and one "album" I made myself for my ringtones.
OK, here is my final version of JB 4.1.2 ROM for Haier W910. Its based on EN/CN port from Acer Cloudmobile S500 repacked by elbuit from here http://www.movilesdualsim.com/threads/rom-4-1-2-stock.47032/page-3#post-443577

Thanks a lot.
Just installed it (see other thread).
Haven't really played with it yet but I'm hopefully moving from my Huawei Ascend G300 U8815 to the Haier W910 running this ROM over the weekend and handing my G300 down to somebody.
Token donation in recognition of the work done sent via PayPal. It might just about buy a beer - but it's a long time since I visited the Czech Republic so I don't know what the price is these days!
OK - I've played with this a bit more and am having two significant problems...
On wifi networks that work fine with other devices and have good signal strength I often get "Temporarily avoiding poor connection" and so get no connection.
Edit: oh - just realised that I should probably disable the "avoid poor connections" option in advanced wifi settings. Maybe when enabling the wifi connection the signal "seems" (?) weak so then the device decides to ignore it...?
For the life of me I cannot configure the APN to get carrier data working. My operator is 48 months/Go Conquer - an Irish MVNO operating on the O2 Ireland network - and I am very familiar with setting this up on multiple devices but no matter what I do here I cannot get it working. Unfortunately the Tweakker APN app cannot configure the settings but even when I manually apply its or the carrier's recommended settings I get no data connection...
Edit2: an odd thing is that when I stick my 48 SIM in by default I see two APNs - Tesco WAP and Tesco MMS. I never saw these with the same SIM in my previous phone (Huawei G300 running CyanogenMod 7). And Tesco has nothing to do with 48 other than being another MVNO running on the O2 Ireland network. These APNs are locked so I cannot delete them and APN Backup/Restore cannot delete APNs on Android 4.0+...
Any advice?
Thanks.
Update on this...
(1) I'm assuming that my wifi issue will be sorted by disabling the "avoid poor connections" option. If not I'll post back.
(2) I managed to get carrier data working. In System settings > Wireless & networks > Mobile networks > Data enabled and Data roaming were checked (the latter because it's often required with MVNOs operating on another carrier's platform). However this did not work. But eventually I installed the Xposed Framework and GravityBox using the bundled installer app. Then I went to GravityBox > Phone tweaks > Mobile data > National data roaming and checked that. This kicked the data connection into life. Even if I disable Data roaming in the regular Android settings.
(3) I had a weird one when I composed a text message of a few lines and the messaging client sent it as several different messages with no obvious logic about where it split it. It wasn't a crazily long text or anything. I reckon it should have fit into a single SMS... I'll keep an eye on this.
(4) When running the stock browser I sometimes get garbage/artifacts in the notification/status bar. I'll post a screenshot later.
Update on this...
I think that (1) is sorted by disabling the "avoid poor connections" advanced wifi option.
I haven't seen (3) again so far but unlike the stock messaging app on other GB, ICS, JB ROMs that I've used before now the one here shows the long messages split into multiple individual messages instead of just showing them combined. Maybe there's an option to enable this but I haven't found it yet.
I haven't had a chance to capture and post a screenshot for (4).
Happy Xmas.
Sorry for long time to respond, i was at my family for few days and i havent internet connection there
I noticed distorted navigation bar this week for 1st time, because i dont usually use stock browser. Maybe unchecking Force GPU rendering in Developer options can help, if you want really use stock browser, when there are better alternatives (Boat,UC,Dolphin,Opera)
About the SMS messages and spliting into many short messages: maybe there is problem with unicode chars. SMS is usually 160 chars long, but if message includes at least 1 unicode character (letters with accents, special noASCII chars etc), the length of sms is shorten to 70 chars. You can avoid it by setting Strip unicode in Gravitybox - Phone tweaks and it will split long sms with 160 chars per message.
Solution for data connection for some providers is very nice, can i cite it in first post?
Hi zatycz - thanks a lot for the reply.
By all means feel free to cite the Gravitybox "national data roaming" tweak in case it helps others (on MVNOs?) to get carrier data working. I don't claim any major kudos for that. I just stumbled across it having tried lots of other combinations of APN settings etc.
I was using the stock browser although previously on my Huawei G300 I was using Dolphin. I'll try the tweak that you mention but may just switch to a non stock browser anyway.
I'm not sure about the SMS issue - I'm sending texts in English so no "extended" Unicode characters. However again I will try the tweak that you mention. I'd just prefer to see "long" texts presented in their consolidated form rather than split into separate 160 char chunks.
Otherwise the ROM runs very well for me so far. Setting the in call volume can sometimes work a bit odd using the volume keys or on screen slider but I haven't really figured it out.
Otherwise no major issues so far - thanks a lot for a great ROM and hope the token payment from me will cover the cost of a beer!

So there is no way at all to customize the built-in notification/status bar switches/toggles?
I'm a bit confused by the storage management on this ROM.
I have a 32GB (29.71GB usable) external micro sdcard.
The phone has 1.48GB of "internal storage".
And 4.83GB of "phone storage".
At at high level by default what goes where?
Any suggestions/recommendations on how to manage the above to optimize storage use and maximise the benefits of the 32GB sdcard?
Thanks.

OK - I'll try that when I get a chance (sometime next week by the looks of things right now!).
But the SMS app in the ROM looks like the stock Android one. Is it not? If so what is different?
In any case I'll try backing up, flashing the stock SMS app, test that and if it works I'll retain it but if not I'll restore the backup.

Has anyone attempted to port MIUI V5 on Hair w910 ? Any development work you guys have done ?
Have you tried porting from MIUI V5 present for Xperia T, HTC one s?

Yeah - I get that too but haven't had a chance yet to try the stock SMS app (CWM flashable zip) from the first post.
I also cannot send MMS ("Service not activated on network") but was able to receive a few.
I need to try that stock app and see if it helps here.
I just hope that my CWM backup will restore OK if it doesn't work as I don't want to have to install all apps an configure from scratch!
Otherwise it's still running very well for me. A few small quirks (which may not actually be ROM related) which I will document when I get a chance but otherwise it's great. Thanks again zatycz.
Small bug? When I'm in the dialer I cannot select the text of a number for a copy/paste. The copy/paste options flash up but then disappear along with the selection highlighting. Bit difficult to explain this without a screenshot perhaps...
Hi zatycz - if you get a chance perhaps you could outline the difference between the bundled messaging (SMS/MMS) app in this ROM and the stock version available as a CWM ZIP from the first post? Did you or somebody else make some changes to the stock on and bundled the modified version with the ROM?
As I have said before this ROM runs really well for me so far. I have had just a few small quirks so far which I'll list here in case it's of any help to anybody:
After correctly configuring the APN for my carrier I also had to enable National data roaming in GravityBox under Telephony settings to get carrier data working on my network (which happens to be an MVNO in case that's relevant)
I get a couple of default APNs (for internet and MMS) which I cannot delete but this may be down to my SIM and not the ROM?
Occasionally the phone rings for an incoming call but the phone lags really badly and does not present the dismiss/answer call screen until after several seconds sometimes too late to take the call. This has happened a few times but is very sporadic.
In call volume control seems a bit hit and miss - sometimes very loud and sometimes too low and sometimes the volume keys and/or on screen volume control don't seem to adjust it accurately.
Long (non Unicode) SMS messages get split into separate parts in my sent messages list but arrive at the destination as combined/long SMS messages OK. Also I can receive but not send MMS messages. I have not yet tried the stock messaging app CWM ZIP in the first post to see if this helps.
Cannot select the text of a number in the dialer screen for the purposes of copy/paste.
Not a ROM issue but CWM backups seem to get the wrong date (e.g. 1970!). I haven't yet tried restoring a backup but hope it works!
I'm a bit unclear about how storage is managed on this ROM - e.g. mounts, internal storage, internal "sd", external sd, and what goes where by default. Maybe somebody can explain?
Ringer/notification volume sometimes erratic? I had a notification sound assigned to incoming messages and it was working fine but then went very quiet and I had to switch to another that I could hear! But this could easily be something other than the ROM itself...
For some reason No Lock (from the Play Store) does not seem to work after a reboot even though enabled and I have to manually run it again (and it says Locking disabled) and leave it for it to take effect.
At one stage I thought that K9 Mail notification LED was not taking effect after a reboot and had to be manually enabled but I think I was mistaken and it seems to work OK now.
TIP: as mentioned above if carrier data is not working but you are sure that your APN is correct then try enabling national data roaming in GravityBox Telephony.
TIP: if you don't like losing screen real estate to on screen buttons then try Auto Hide Soft Keys app from the Play Store.
There seems to be a problem with volume in incoming and outgoing calls, some times people on the other end cant hear me almost at all and i cant hear them almost at all either,i am saying that the volume is very very low evenif set at max.,and thats not all, sometimes when i make a call the volume is very low but after the third beep-ring the volume goes way to loud almost as if i have the external speaker on!
And i also noticed that i to have Ringer/notification volume sometimes erratic, missing calls because the volume of the ringer go so low and i cant hear the call!

My experience is that if it's too low or too high then often adjusting the volume with the volume keys or on screen slider may correct it even if the slider ends up at the same place as it started! There's something funny going on alright but I haven't analyzed it systematically yet...

2. on my last samsung devices my contacts used to have a function of "auto-merging" similiar contacts. on idol i can merge single contacts, but i can't find any option like i had before. do you have any tipps?
thnx, peter

Create bootable SD card 10 Android PX6.
Important!!! : very demanding on the type of SD card !! I started installing the firmware when I changed 5 different SD cards from different manufacturers !!!!!
1. Unzip the bootable_sd_card_10_android_PX6 archive to C:/ disk on a laptop or computer.
2. Run SD_Firmware_Tool.exe (as administrator)
3. Select the firmware in .IMG - update_10_android_zavod_PX6.img
4. Click on the Create button.
5. After creating the SD card, insert it into the device and reboot it. The firmware installation will start automatically. Installation will take a very long time, about 40-60 minutes !!!!!

If we have purchased your firmware for 9.0 full, do we need to do another purchase for this android 10 version?
Also, what's the upgrade procedure like for those of us coming off of malaysk 9.0?
I wonder if the upgrade is even worth it? Does your android 10 bring anything extra to the table? Love your android 9 firmware!
Thank you the best rom for px6 a10 so far !

@Malaysk hasnt confirmed Bluetooth support in Android 10, it's likely that MD-725 (RTL) isnt supported, so many devices might not have working Bluetooth on these versions. There may be other BT types not supported, but @Malaysk hasnt confirmed supported devices at all.
ok so i'm not entirely sure what the lite version actually consists of. I appreciate that it says a lot of things have been changed and added in the FULL version. But are we talking that the LITE version is just stock rom with a couple of launchers , root and a few other apps?
what rom is it actually based on or is it compiled from fresh?
is the lite version going to give me enough difference from stock 10 i have on my current unit in terms of speed, responsiveness and suchlike to make it worthwhile basically starting afresh?
bear in mind that i'm new to these devices and i've not installed any custom roms like this or hal9k on it before (plenty of experience with phones /tablets though)

ok so i'm not entirely sure what the lite version actually consists of. I appreciate that it says a lot of things have been changed and added in the FULL version. But are we talking that the LITE version is just stock rom with a couple of launchers , root and a few other apps?
what rom is it actually based on or is it compiled from fresh?
is the lite version going to give me enough difference from stock 10 i have on my current unit in terms of speed, responsiveness and suchlike to make it worthwhile basically starting afresh?
bear in mind that i'm new to these devices and i've not installed any custom roms like this or hal9k on it before (plenty of experience with phones /tablets though)

hi, no i've not attempted to yet since part of me is reluctant to give money for the rom, from what i can tell the 'lite' version is not a lot different to stock so isn't indicative of the one that he wants you to pay money for. plus i'm not paying money when the guy rarely supports his 'product'.
waiting for hal9k's rom
Hello,
the rom is verdy good.
Thanks.
But the EQ is very poor.
Can we install the EQ from Hal9k v4 or from AAS?
Updating from an existing Android 10, I got a status 7 error when updating to lite - what am I possibly doing wrong ???

i have not tried this version as but i used the previous version
the lite release give you more futures than stock but it is not meant to be used full time it meant to be a test drive for this ROM before you pay anything
the money go to support the developer to help improve this ROM
The full release add soo many futures that you can not get on stock

Are coming from android 9 or 10?
For 10 it should work (but I have not tried)
For 9 you can not upgrade directly from 9 to 10 like that
you need a special method

Same issue happens to me. I come from a rooted device on 10 but the reset to factory default, resets itself without root, therefore early root might not be the issue.
Px5 or px6
Hey Malaysk

thnx for the answer. is there any kind of the rom to update? because right now is a bit disgusting
There must be a way to turn this sound off. The one when the UI first loads. Its a deal breaker issue.
The answer is if you used gearlock to install the OS or have install gearlock and perhaps updated to the latest gearlock version the gui load sound can be disabled from within gearlocks own settings, run gearlock and look for gearlock settings in its own menu.
Awesome, not ideal as this should be a simple OS option in my opinion but it works and that is what matters most.
