Hi all, I would like to know if it is possible to unlock the phone that is locked to Sprint. Would flashing the stock firmware do the trick?
Thanks.
It won't be locked on Sprint. It's the exact same phone that's being sold in the Play Store.

BestBuy is selling the Sprint Nexus 5 off contract, but Sprint is CDMA right? I am an international user and here we only have GSM, so that phone would not be an option for me?

You are correct about the international part, but the flavor Sprint is selling is CDMA & GSM and works on AT&T, T-Mobile (both GSM carriers) as well as Sprint and other mnvos.

Hi, thank you verry much for your reply. So this phone should work with any GSM carrier or only US GSM carriers? And it should not need unlocking? I'm tinking about buying one but I'd like to be 100% sure that it will work here.
Thanks.

No unlocking, but only us GSM carriers as far as I'm aware. Maybe Canada, but not sure.

If I understand correctly, according to this table it should work correctly, I am from Argentina, and both carriers listed seem to have Voice, Text and 3G.

I have no idea. North America gets D820, while the rest of the world gets D821. Go compare their bands somewhere like gsmarena.
The Nexus 5 will work on any GSM carrier for voice and 3G, no issues there. Only issue will be LTE (4G). U.S version (D820) has different LTE radio versus Euro (rest of the world version (D821). If you don't care about LTE, then you're fine and good to go with any GSM carrier in your native Argentina.
I have been told that the Nexus 5 sold in BestBuy is CDMA only. What is it, I'm not sure if the guy from BestBuy I talked to was correct about this information. Thanks

Beware - Sprint has never sold a phone which was totally SIM-unlocked. Until there is confirmation that someone bought the Sprint sold/marketed phone and put in a US SIM card that worked, I would not take the chance that the phone is unlocked.

I called 3 local best buys, checking on getting a Nex5 in hand as opposed to waiting on one from google. I asked each wireless-dept worker if I can buy the Nexus 5 for the full off-contract price and then go use it at t-mobile, I further then let them know I want to buy the Nexus 5 "unlocked" so I could use it on whatever carrier I choose.
All 3 people say no-go, must use on sprint.
Sooo - uneducated sales people? or is sprint locking the Nex5 before they send it to best buy? I took no chance and bought from play store.

You cannot believe anything the Droids at BestBuy tell you. They want you to activate the phone on Sprint so BB can collect the commission. Why would you buy the N5 at BB anyway? You like paying an extra $150 vs the Play Store?

its actually only $100... and deduct off $15 for shipping from google... and that I had $50 in best buy rewards from buying a dishwasher... I figured $35 to have it in my hand on the 8th would be cool. But in the end just ordered from play store and will have to wait 2-3 weeks.

ok heres the kicker the Spectrum is the real issue here. LTE bands are split on the 2 versions of Nexus 5's (NA (north America) and RoW (rest of World))
http://productforums.google.com/forum/#!topic/nexus/Q4A1X1oAOSs
compare those lte bands to this link to see what lte bands your service uses.

I am switching from AT&T to Sprint and I just purchased the Unlocked Nexus 5 on Google Play. What exactly do I have to do in order to activate my phone on the Sprint Network? I am used to just popping my SIM card into the new phone and it works but I know Sprint is a CDMA network and does not use SIM cards.
1. How do I get the phone activated on Sprint
2. Will it run just as good on Sprint as it would on AT&T? It will still work with LTE right?

Sprint does not have a byod line as far as I know unless you are going prepaid. Nobody knows yet if any of the mvnos will activate the nexus 5. You could always get an Iphone or something on your new line and sell it to cover your nexus cost and then some.
For a new line it would be much easier just to buy from sprint for $49.
Coverage/LTE will depend on your area but yes it will work.

According to this page the Unlocked version will work on Sprint:
http://www.ibtimes.com/nexus-5-release-date-unlocked-model-will-run-sprint-network-1452872
I probably will get an iPhone or something just to sell it since I will be able to get a new phone on contract pricing but I still need to know how to actually activate my Nexus when I get it. I was thinking about getting the $50 Nexus through Sprint but I am afraid if I do that I it will not be the exact same model. I don't want any Sprint bloatware on my phone and I don't want to get updates later than the rest. I also want to make sure the phone I get is heavily supported by developers. There is just too many unknowns on the Sprint model that I am scared to get it.
So anyway, do I just call Sprint to activate my device?

There is no 'sprint' model they are the same device. So to activate you will need to get a sim card from sprint and then you can either chat, call, use the online activation or go to the store to get set up.

To get a SIM, either go into the Sprint store. Or go online to the chat (you'll need an existing Sprint acct for this).
To activate, just call the big S and give them the info that they ask for
There's a thread going about this already that has some good info:

Sorry but just to be clear, Sprint will sell an unlocked phone? Has that ever been done before? Do you have a source? Not to discredit you but it seems that I should just buy it from Sprint instead of Google Play if there is no real differences. I just want to be sure.

I don't have a source atm, but that's all I've heard around the forums. You need to start a 2 year contract to get the phone at their low price though ($50 I think?). They're selling an off-contract one for $400 too. Same device all around.

This is the first time they have ever done it. This also means that the phone will be updated directly by google, with no carrier approvals/delays- which is also unprecedented for CDMA.
I myself am very surprised more people are not talking about this.
I stopped at a Sprint store today and asked about activating a phone bought from Google directly and they said it couldn't be done? Is that the case? I have about 5 months remaining on my contract with Sprint before I go on to another carrier.

Good deal. Will order a SIM tomorrow. So 1 device, all 3 carriers? Perfect.
Tried chat last night, and then calling in today but getting the run around. Was told I had to go corporate repair store; called store and was told that they don't normally stock SIM cards and that they won't have a N5 compatible one for a while until there shipment of phones comes in. I have sero account but this is the first time it has been an issue getting service.

Hello all, currently I've got an unlocked Galaxy S4 running on AT&T GO Phone $60 a month plan.
I'm thinking about getting the Nexus 5 and it appears the wait time is a few weeks from google.
My family has been with sprint for years and have a few lines that're eligible for upgrades, I was thinking about purchasing a Nexus 5 for $49.99 with one of those upgrades however I don't plan to be on the Sprint network with them as I prefer AT&T in my Area (Don't live with my family where Sprint service is good) .
So basically my question is, Is sprint just reselling the Google version or do they have their own version of the phone that is locked and such?
I don't see any specific "Sprint Nexus 5" section here on XDA so I assume all the Google Nexus 5 ROM's and such work on the Sprint version?
Does that confirm that its the same device and can be used on any carrier?
Thanks for reading!

I'm going to head over to the store tomorrow if I can get a solid answer that it will work so if anyone has more input please let me know!
I want a Nexus simply so I'm not held back by Carrier updates as I've been with the amazing Galaxy line that suffers from carrier slowness. So I want to be sure the device Sprint is selling is indeed the Google Play Store device just resold through Sprint.

Yeah I just feel weird asking these questions to sprint.
Example:
"Hey, I'm interested in the Nexus 5, however I want to use it on AT&T because your service is bad here, Will it work?"
I'm sure they'll be professional and answer the question but still feels like a rude question to ask. Lol.
ALSO: Does anyone know if the Sprint Version is branded with "sprint" on it anywhere?
Never assume carrier reps will answer questions professionally, haha. And I really don't know about any Sprint decals.

I just spoke with Sprint and played dumb, This was the conversation in short:
Me: Is the phone the same device google is offering, unlocked and everything?
Sprint rep: Sir do you mean unlocked for international use?
Me: Yes can it be used on other carriers over seas when I travel?
Sprint rep: After 3 months we will be able to unlock the device for you to use on other networks sir.
Me: Okay so its not unlocked from day one, I have to wait 3 months?
Sprint rep: That is correct sir.
So it seems they don't want people doing what I'm going to do OR the sprint rep doesn't know crap about the nexus 5. Lol.

Yeah I went from a Galaxy S3 on Sprint to a T-mobile Galaxy S4 unlocked and running on AT&T so the last time I had a CDMA device it didn't have GSM. Its nice to know I can get newer sprint phones such as the Nexus on my families plan and use them on carriers such as AT&T that actually have signal in my area. Tomorrow is going to be a good day
Just bought Nexus 5 from local Best Buy. First one I went to said I needed to leave with a Sprint contract. The second one let me buy it outright with GP price match.
The box has Sprint material in it and a "don't text and drive" Sprint screen protector.
The model number and build number are the same. I also popped in my ATT sim and it worked.
Same build as developers.google.com, no Sprint software or google play sprint integration. I see no sign of Sprint any where on the hardware or software. My ATT sim works on LTE and HSPA, data/text/phone.
So I sold a Nexus 5 to someone my dad knows and for some reason it won't connect to sprint! They already paid me for the device.
I thought this device can work on all three major carriers and are all one model? Tried going to the store and they still couldn't activate it.
It does however detect the network but it just doesn't want to to connect at all. My T-mo card works on it and it has been factory reseted.
It's 16GB unlocked boot loader and not rooted with a stock recovery. Any ideas?
Edit: please don't tell me to tell them to switch carriers. It's their choice to be with sprint. I've read other threads with people jumping straight to that. :/

That is like what Apple says about iPhones until the carrier locks them. You have a device issue then.
Have you tried with other carriers or than the two mentioned?
All nexus devices have never been carrier locked and would never be locked. That's why it's called a Nexus device. Carriers don't lock/alter the phone in any way after it's been already made clear that it will be Unlocked at the time of release.
@Dragn4rce: have you tried using a different Sprint Card on that device? Does it work? I've seen many issues with Nexus users who are on Sprint all over xda

you cant swap between them without the reset. there's something that gets stored for the CDMA network to be a priority, just dont remember what it is.
make sure the sprint LTE SIM is in the phone, and factory reset/flash factory images.
If the device was purchased from Google Play or from Sprint, it should work fine on the 3 major carriers in the US (just not Verizon).
But if the device was purchased from T-Mo, there is a possibility that it won't work on Sprint.
This has nothing to do with the device not being carrier unlocked or anything like that. It is simply because Sprint may not have that IMEI in their databases, and Sprint will not permit such a device (for which they don't have the IMEI in their databases) on their network.
I see that op indicated that the device was from Google Play. Can you ask Sprint why it is not working? (ask to check if device is blacklisted, or if IMEI is missing, or something else)

There's two devices I'm talking about. Mine is GP the one I sold is TMO. and that's what I'm really worried about. It not being in the system.
PS. Tmo device detects sprint. Mine doesn't

If the device causing the problem was purchased from T-Mo, then it is very likely that Sprint may not have the IMEI in their system, which is causing the activation issue. Ask the store rep to verify that. If they confirm that is the issue, ask if they can add it (I doubt they can). If they can't, try Sprint phone support (again, I don't know if they will).

Why do Google play devices work then. Their IMEI didn't get added to sprint most likely.
Which BTW mine, the Google play version, didn't work with sprint at all. But the TMO version did actually detect sprint and offer an option to establish a connection (it failed after a few minutes).
Mine, the Google play, didn't offer monkey doodles about establishing a connection.
I hate CDMA carriers. Sooooo much. *sigh*

Did the factory reset and that didn't work.

Actually, the ones purchased directly from Google Play do have their IMEI added to Sprint (funny thing - for the first few days after the Nexus 5 was made available from Google Play, the IMEI for the 32GB ones were not in Sprint's database, and those didn't get activated. Several escalations later, and about 1-2 days later, those got added, and users were finally able to get it activated on Sprint - read more here).
If your Google play one is not working with Sprint, you should get Google to look into it. That should not be an IMEI issue.

I dont really care about mine, the fine
Google play version. I'm sticking to TMO no matter what.
But the one I sold, the TMO version, I need to get it to work. did the factory reset and still nothing.
But don't the TMO devices come from Google. I'm pretty sure they get added too once they're made sitting in Google's warehouse and then TMO orders them and ships it to the stores.

T-mo devices likely do come from Google. That doesn't however mean that Sprint will have their IMEIs.
Do note that I neither work for Sprint, nor for Google (and not for T-Mo). I remember reading about this issue at s4gru and at some other sites. I don't know if that issue is still there, but you can check that by asking Sprint if the IMEI on your T-Mo nexus 5 is in their system or not.
Hi All
I`m travelling to Miami next week from abroad for 5 days, and would like to buy a Nexus 5. Cheapest place in store seems to be T-Mobile no Credit check.
Just wondering if its just a standard Nexus 5 phone that I can take back home and use on a local network.
Any ideas??
THanks

You should be fine doing that.
They all should be the same except for storage size.

i know theres something about either buying it on tmobile or sprint and not working on the other. I forget which way it goes, but it has to do with one the ESN not being in the database of the other. I think it was if bought on tmobile the esn was not on sprints list.
Here is what I know:
There are 2 models only.
D820 (North America)
D821 (Everywhere else)
The D821 and D820 will work on any* network in the respective area. However a D820 in the "everywhere else" region will only work up to HSPA+ (No LTE). The same is true of the D821 in North America.
The D820 bought from T-mobile is exactly the same as the D820 bought on ebay,. or via AT&T or wherever. The Same as the Sprint one too. However, I believe the Sprint one does not work on T-mobile because it is not in their database. (or as someone else said it may be the other way around, cant get T-mobile on Sprint because it is not in their database)

its the other way around. sprint does not have the tmobile one in their database, but you can get someone in their tier 2 tech support to add it.

I'm on tmobile, but I have seen threads where it does take a bit to get some one to add it.
