Hi everyone,
I am waiting for my S5 to come within a few days and in the meantime I'm browsing around in a search for a car mount. I came across this one on amazon:
http://www.amazon.com/Mountek-nGroo...sim_cps_1?ie=UTF8&refRID=0A24M5KGJ6GW57GE14ZT
It says it's cradle-less, and there it holds on a magnet. I have never used this type of mounts before, so I am a bit concerned about magnets affecting the phone's performance.... Any insight (or suggestions) are greatly appreciated.
Also, I saw another one like that, but there is a metal insert that has to be put under the back cover. Do you think it will affect the water/dust seal?
Thank you

Wrong link?
I have this one http://www.amazon.com/iMagnet-Cradl...&qid=1397234384&sr=1-1&keywords=imagnet+mount
...and i freaking love it for the note 2. Magnet is the only way i can go for car mounts now. If you don't care about wireless charging, the metal plate has no impact (in my experience) on the phone and is thin enough to sit right between the battery cover and the battery, at least on the note 2. I'm actively investigating options for a magnet mount with the S5, although i need wireless charging and the two don't get along (can't have metal between the phone's coil and the charging pad).
I have this one and I'll never buy anything different. Super small, super strong, and it looks sharp.

Thank you for the reply. It helps.
Yes, my bad - the link was to the Cradle version. You had to click on "snap" rectangle on the page. My mistake. And that's what I ordered for now... (snap version)
Also, i came over this thing in another thread and it seems to be exactly what we are looking for. the only problem - it IS pricey) and it won't ship until end of May at least. (wireless charger and magnet mount at the same time).

Thank you. I saw this one on Amazon today. Is it glued on to the dashboard? Can you detach it? I don't want any glue leftovers in a leased car...)
I have the imagnet. Used for my s3 between the phone and uag case. I love quick access to the phone on and off the mount. I just got my s5 but won't be in my truck til Monday to test it, but I don't foresee any problems.
I thought about a magnet mount for a while.
Car mounts should be simple, and quick. But most require you to either use 2 hands, and some 2 step process. Or you have to buy one that works quickly, but only without a case.
Then I found this DashCrab Duet
Sticks like glue, and easy one handed operation. The price is more than those cheap'o cradles, but much less than the high end ones. I've never been happier with a car mount.

i'm not about to "Stick" anything to my fancy car. I have the mountek, and stopped using it. it sticks out so much from the cd drive, and gs350 has a funny looking CD drive that didn't play nicely with mountek.
I should mention that the Dash Crab, sticks very well, but it is just a suction cup, no adhesive.
http://www.scosche.com/magicmount
this one looks promising. I might get it if I can find a nice spot in my car to place it
Just reporting back on the imagnet mount with my s5. Works just like it did with my s3. Slid the little piece of metal between the cover and phone and it pops right on. Should note that the imagnet has one of those awesome suction cups that doesn't fail. Mine has been stuck on my dash since I bought it and never came off even through temperature swings. GPS isn't affected either.

Unfortunately the air dock is probably a non-starter for the S5:
How does the micro suction foam work?
The micro suction foam face is pretty cool. Imagine a whole bunch of tiny little suction cups. That's what we have used to hold phones to the Air Dock. Full size suction cups need a smooth glossy surface to stick to. Similarly the micro suction foam needs a smooth glossy phone to hold onto.Any phone with a glossy back will stick great to the micro suction foam. If your phone isn't glossy on the back, then it's just a simple matter of putting it in a case that is smooth and glossy.

That's an outdated description. The suction is backed by magnets:
The face of the Air Dock is a micro suction foam that holds your phone in place. Inside the Air Dock are magnets that pull the phone tightly into the foam face. The qi wireless charger is built into the dock. Any phone that supports Qi charging will automatically charge once placed on the Air Dock

i kinda have a thing for magnets. I'm sitting here with my S5 and an N52 neodymium magnet that will hold 6.5 lbs. There is not a place on the back of the S5 that it will stick strong enough to resist a light shake of the device. He mentions the N5 and N7 so it may work with those devices (since they were orignially designed to work with the official nexus magnetic Qi charger) but i do not see any way for this work with the S5.

I used to use the iMagnet mount in my car and it came with a really thin circular piece of metal that was meant to be stuck on the outside of your phone's back cover. I took it and instead stuck it to the inside of the back cover - it holds extremely well. I used it on the S4 and now the S5. If you use a case then you can just stick it on the back cover between the case and the phone. I don't use a case and didn't want that to take away from the devices appeal.

Oh definitely, i have an iMagnet mount as well. The tricky part is that you can't put ferrous metals inside an induction field. Not only will it disrupt the induction field, they get hot. So, in order to incorporate both magnets and inductive charging into a solution, you need to have the magnets placed outside the plane of the induction field on the Z axis or, or around the outside of the field in the Y axis (assuming induction field is on the Z plane).
At one point i decided if i had to choose between iMagnet and Qi, i picked Qi. Then i decided i wanted both - so i made my own mount using small neodymium magnets at the 4 corners of the backplate of my note 2 and cannibalized an old ball-socket car mount, made a new plate, and adhered 4 matching magnet's to a flat plate to mate the phone to. So you CAN have your cake and eat it too, the implementation is just a little tricky.

Ah ok, I wasn't aware of that. Although, to be honest - I used to let my GS4 charge all of the time with no issues.
I need a new car mount as I had the old Moto X dock. Has anyone had any success with universal car mounts? I would ideally want something that had a small footprint and allowed for easy charging. Thanks in advance for your suggestions!
I use the breffo spiderpodium. Universal as heck.
Wow that's a unique dock! Not quite my style though, but thanks
I use the iOttie that I bought on amazon here:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B007FHX9OK
I highly recommend it. The one touch mechanism feels really natural.
I looked at that one and nearly bought it. I went with the Griffin Window Seat 3 and will see how it goes. I liked the minimal look to it.

If you use a case I would go with a magnetic car dock. I swear by these because the have such a small profile and are very versatile. The best thing about these is that if your phone has wireless charging (which is the only thing I miss now that I have the Moto X) it sticks to the charger without a metal plate in your case.
I have the mountek:
http://www.mountek.com/shop/categor...i-use-car-mount-smartphones-and-mini-tablets/
ProClip makes some pretty nice mounts that include the charger built in to it. Here is a link to the old Moto X docks. I emailed them and they said it will take a few weeks to make the design for the new Moto X, but they are definitely making one.

It's been a long time since I posted here. Just came to look for stuff for my soon to arrive Moto X (2014) and spotted this thread. I currently use this mounting system with my current Moto X (2013) and have done with previous phones:
http://www.tetrax.com/xway/
They've very strong magnets that you mount in your car either straight on to the dashboard, via a small tiltable 'X' for larger devices or (my personal choice) the ones which clamp onto the air vents. You then stick a small metal 'dot' on the back of your device (I've always stuck the 'dot' to a case which I've had the phone in, but I suspect it'd be fine straight on the device.
The great thing about this system is that you can have multiple magnets (I've got one on the head of my bed to hold my phone near me as it charges at night), and multiple devices with 'dots' on them for the same mounts. They're very strong, and removing the device from the mount is as simple as pulling it it away from the magnets and to the side slightly.
I actually prefer mounts that include charging so I don't have to plug in the USB cord every time.

I'll keep an eye on that dock too even though it's probably going to be around fifty bucks. Mind bumping this thread when you hear it's released?
The Scosche magicMounts are awesome. They are the magnetic mounts that you can buy at Walmart.
I really hope that there will be a car dock from Griffin. I've got the Griffin car dock for the MX 2013 and it's fantastic. I love how secure it fits and that it turns in driving mode automatically due to the magnet in the dock.
Does any other dock currently on the market have the magnet to put the MX in driving mode? And I love the USB port so that I don't have to plug it into the phone every time I put it in the dock.

I bought the Scosche vent mount, and I'm pretty pleased. It came with a suction cup mount for a window/dash as well.
But the vent mount works perfectly for me. Stays on well, and rotates for Landscape view that I like to use when using navigation.
Paid ~$25 at Walmart.

Hey guys and gals,
I am looking to purchase a Car Qi Charger. I have not yet found a thread for this, though there were options mentioned in the regular Qi Charger thread, but this one is specifically for the car.
I have found 2 which look promising but just want to know other peoples input. Plus want to know if they will hold with a case on the phone.
Itian: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00M685JTG/
C1: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00H1XU6A8/
Both of these look pretty good, have mixed reviews, but just want to know what you guys think would be best and if anyone actually used these in the past?
I know that there is also the AirDock, but I doubt it would hold the Note 4 all that well, so not bothering to include it.
I currently use this item in my car as a regular holder, so I wish there was one (other than the AirDock) which can utilize the ability to hold and charge the phone by mounting into the CD Slot of the car head unit: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B004G1L52Q/
Please add to this list if anyone has better solutions.
I've been agonizing over this choice myself, but I'm even worse off than you- I've gotten hooked on having a magnetic mount (currently using the Bracketron Si earth elements mount), and I REALLY like the S-View cover, so what I really want is a car dock that does Qi charging AND holds the phone magnetically, with strong enough magnets to hold through the S-View flap! Unfortunately, it seems that at this point there aren't ANY magnetic Qi docks (apart from the Airdock, and I'm right on the same page as you there), let alone one that would work through the S-View flap! So basically if I want Qi I'm stuck either sacrificing the magnetic holding feature and going with arms, or I'll have to build my own custom dock. Haven't quite decided which route I'll go yet, but man do I wish there was a decent magnetic Qi dock!
Anyway, as for Qi docks that DO exist now, in my research I've found a couple that seem to really stand out and come up time and again as the go-to's for Qi in the car. Here's the best options I've seen so far:
The iOttie: http://www.iottie.com/Product/Detai...for Google Nexus 5 and Qi Enabled Smartphones
Amazon's got this one for $55 also: http://www.amazon.com/iOttie-Wireless-Standard-Motorola-Smartphones/dp/B00IRHQZTI
Nokia CR-201: http://www.mobilefun.com/38310-nokia-qi-wireless-charging-nfc-car-holder-cr-201-Reviews.htm
bit more expensive, but has some nice features.
Then there's this:http://www.tylt.com/vu-car-wireless-charger/
Not available yet, but it looks like it may be a decent option.
I've read a lot of mixed reviews on the plethora of non-name brand Qi gear thats out there, some people say that they work just as well for cheaper prices and others say that they're total junk. I guess I'd say if you see one you really like then just make sure that you read reviews on it so you don't get stuck with something that doesn't work or worse.
As for a mount that uses the CD slot, I haven't seen any Qi docks that come with that option but many docks share similar or identical mounting solutions, so once you find a Qi dock that you like you could probably find a non-qi dock that mounts in the CD slot and then just replace the actual dock with the Qi one. Personally I don't think I'd trust the CD slot to hold up a phone this heavy, I'd be worried about damaging the CD player not to mention it'll be much less steady, but hey if that's what you like then good luck!
Thanks for the input
I will have to look into the Ottie one as it does look fairly decent. The Nokia one is way over priced and I cannot say I am a fan of it. The Tylt is nice, but I am sure it is going to be quite costly due to their original designs of their products.
The reason I want it as a CD mount is because I currently have one (minus the Qi of course) and it works just fine, hold the phone super good, without issues at all what so ever. Plus, no damage done to the head unit or CD Slot (not that I use CDs of course lol).
I just want something very low profile, but for it to do the job you know. The reason why I do not want anything mounted on the windshield is because I hate wires and I like for the phone to be close to me while I drive. I do not text and drive though! I plan to run the wire behind my head unit and bring out just enough to plug into the Qi holder. This will be a pain in the rear of course, but I am anal when it comes to wires lol. I have a radar, dash cam, and soon a Qi charger, all of which I want to make fairly invisible with regards to wires.

Keep in mind that none of the chargers that people listed here except for the Itian have the One Touch operation. Paradoxically that includes the iOttie charger (people who invented it). So to me they all seem ridiculously overpriced for the limited functionality they provide. I am using Itian, and so far pretty happy with it. If you really need some sort of specific mount (CD, Vent, or whatever), you may be able to take Itian head (it's detachable) and glue it to the mount that you like. I had to do that myself because by dash has rough texture and the only suction cup that would stick is iOttie gel cap. So I used a suction cup plus arm form a low end iOttie charger ($13.99 on sale) and Itian head ($27.99). Cheaper and more functional than name brands.

I actually ordered the C1 yesterday, but ordered it from AliExpress for $34 and should hopefully be here in about a week or so.
I will report back. I am wondering about purchasing the Itian though and seeing which one is actually better, but not sure yet.
I used AirDock with my LG G3. It should work with note4 also. Got nothing bad to say about that dock!

Disregard my earlier suggestion. Now that I finally have a Qi Receiver sticker for my Note 4, I'm finding that this one doesn't charge because the receiver isn't centered in the phone. I did cut up my receiver and turn the coil as close to the center as possible (careful not to cut the actual wires!), but it still doesn't charge for more than 2 seconds before the charging indicator turns off on the phone.
I ordered this one as a replacement and it's working great:
http://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00F5XPCSC/
Caveat: I don't know if it would work with the receiver sticker still in it's original configuration... :/ If I had to guess, I'd say it would because I can slide my phone to either side a little bit and I don't lose connection.
I had it with my Note 3. With the Note 4, I upgraded the car charger to a QC 2.0 charger and my car charging need is solved. It charges way faster than the best Qi charger that I've tried.

Can someone with the AirDock comment on the strength of the magnet? I've been pretty interested in it, but the problem for me is that I really like the S-View case, so the magnet in the AirDock would need to be strong enough to hold through the S-View flap. Maybe someone could test how well it holds with a piece of cardboard or something between the AirDock and the phone? I've totally gotten addicted to having a magnetic dock, but I also love my S-View and I want wireless charging! I mean cmon, can't I have everything???

Can someone with the AirDock comment on the strength of the magnet? I've been pretty interested in it, but the problem for me is that I really like the S-View case, so the magnet in the AirDock would need to be strong enough to hold through the S-View flap. Just use these, its what I do and it works amazing
Right, I would assume I'd need to use the sticker but what I'm wondering is whether the AirDock will hold the phone with the S-View cover flipped around to the back. Basically the sticker would be on the back of the phone, then the S-View cover would be between the sticker and the AirDock. Are the magnets in the AirDock strong enough to hold the phone even with the cover between them and the sticker?

The nexus 5 has 4 metal discs in it specifically to make magnetic docks easy and allow for some self aligning.
The airdock with the nexus 5 works reasonable well. Not perfect, I do have to realign the phone more than once per day and end up grabbing or holding if if there's a big dip/bump/whatever.
However even with a thin case the n5 is unusable with the air dock. What's worse is that the airdock + note 4 is worse than the airdock + n5. I'm guessing the note 4 doesn't have the 4 discs.
I have an airdock and it works great with the Note 4.
i use an itian charger and it works great with double sided scotch tape for outdoor mounting. sticks vertically to the dash and holds the note 4 with two prongs.
While shopping for cars, I found out the camry and Avalon can come with wireless charging. I ended up with an Avalon Hybrid with tech pkg.
I'm not happy with this one - lost allways the connection - looking now one with three coils like my Itian desk charger, this one works perfect....

I use this one:

I used it for my S3, and it does fit a Note 4 with the Ringke Fusion case on it with a little room to spare. I haven't used it for Wireless Charging on my Note 4 yet because I'm still waiting for my wireless receiver to arrive, but it has worked perfectly on my S3 for the last 6 months.
It doesn't go in a CD slot, but it does offer both the suction cup and the air vent hooks.

I like the iOttie...
I used to have a dockingstation to every Phone i owned.
For my m9 i didnt find any good, yet.
Any advices? Which one do you use? How do you charge your m9 over night?
I had this Smay Docking station that was made for the HTC One M8 that I used for the OnePlus One. It works great for the HTC M9 as well.
There's an insert that you can pull out for thicker phones. With my Slim case on, I need to take out the insert and the phone fits in fine with some space, so a thicker case would work too. Without any case, it'll fit in with the insert which will give it a tighter snug fit.
The added bonus with this docking station is that it comes with a pass through microusb so you can charge another device at the same time (bt headset or another phone, etc.)

I got this one from Amazon UK.
http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00W3PLW7K?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00 it looks very smart, and has OTG input, and only cost £9.95 it suits my needs and I'm very happy with it.
I modified my Kidigi M7 dock to fit my M9
Just needs bit more sanding, and i'll throw a lick of paint over it,the insert won't be used when my new case arrives.
Took the dock apart, used the Dremel to cut another hole beside the original, lined it all up with the phone attached to the micro usb, then hot glued it into place.
Also used the dremel to slim the insert down a bit for a caseless phone.
Couldn't see the sense in spending another $50 for another dock.
I had the same problem with the changing phones and ended up in designing a cradle on my own made of wood. which can be adapted to (nearly) any phone.
As the connector of the M9 is not too far away from the middle it should work.

Don't hesitate... http://kai-altstaedt.dawanda.com/ there are still some available.
Ok so we've all searched for a replacement for the HTC keyboard folio with little success (especially with its battery issues). End your search.
After extensive research and trial and error, I have found a nearly equivalent substitution!
The model is the Belkin Form Fit Kindle Fire HDX 8.9 Keyboard case.
I picked one up on eBay for $15 but YMMV with respect to price.
Fitment - With just a bare Nexus, the case is too big and does not hold the tablet. But...with a simple acrylic case around the tablet, everything functions as normal! The tablet snaps in place and stays secure in the case and fits PERFECTLY. The only issue is that (obviously) you can't use the camera or buttons while in the case. So what. I'll probably dremel a hole for the buttons though. Only other issue is that you need to use the included elastic strap to keep the case closed - otherwise it wants to sit slightly open. No big deal.
Performance - Keys are firm, spring back as expected, and are extremely well placed for a tablet keyboard, with several function keys at the top. I can't vouch for battery life because it isn't dead yet, but I'll report back when it dies.
Build quality - excellent. Belkin makes great products and this is no exception. The outside is some type of smooth, grippy stitched vinyl and plastic, and looks subtle but well-designed.
It charges in 2 hours with a micro USB charger, so you only need one cable. Bluetooth is reliable and quick.
Overall, this thing rocks!!! Go get you one!
glad you like it. I'm using a Brydge 9.7" keyboard. It turns the N9 into a really versatile device and has a backlit keyboard. It is a little big for the N9, but only about 7mm each side.
