Does my requirements feature in a current ROM - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Firstly i don't wish this to be turned into a which one is best, as mostly this is all subjective depending on each users requirements....
What i would like to know is the following... Does a ROM currently exist which have the following things?
As close to stock as possible
Option to select and to run phone in ART runtime
Theme engine present, OR ability to change icons whilst in ART mode
Essentially I'm looking for something close to Paranoid Android, BUT with ability to use ART runtime?
Thanks in Advance

I thought it wasn't 'compatible', or have i misread it? When i first installed PA 7mths ago i remember going to change it to ART, and a warning/error message came up from memory saying not possible, and not looked since.
Maybe i misread the msg or had a blonde moment months ago, and not bothered checking since

You completely misread the message.
We don't support bug reports or issues if you are using art, as there are many apps incompatible with art in general.
If you read the message it stated the TEAM doesn't support it but you can switch to art if you want to. If it wasn't compatible, we would not have even given you the option

Yep, put it in ART now. Think when initially looked into it i just saw PA doesn't support... and obviously like an idiot didn't read any further!
Sorry for the pointless thread!

We tried to make the message clear enough but no matter the wording it came through as the ROM didn't support it for some reason. You most certainly aren't the only one.
Once Google makes art default we will support it as long as it's not an app issue. Some apps are not compatible with art

Multiple Icons for same application on CDMA Hero

Hey, not exactly sure about posting in the right sub forum but i have a little issue
i am currently using a CDMA Hero for Sprint and everything has been going well after fixing the battery issue with a different messaging app, but now a new little annoying issue has arised.
lately when i have opened my menu bar for all my apps i have been getting multiple icons for the same apps
Examples such as Bonsai Blast and Teeter have 2 icons right next to each other that are the same. They both work but its kinda annoying
also some of the applications names are incorrect. instead of ChompSMS its titles is now com.p1.chompsms along with Google Voice being voicemail.xxx... etc
i have tried searching the forums quite a bit and haven't quite found an answer for this issue and am not sure if it applies to the GSM version (thinking it might be a bug for Sense UI)
anyone have the same issue?
i have tried reinstalling the applications and rebooting and it still keeps happening. (not really wanting to hard reset...)
Any help would be very much appreciated!
Thanks!
you are not alone, yeah for i have two print voicemail apps one with a long com..... something same with google sky and google voice app its odd but hey hopefully we will get eclair soon
I don't think it is the Sense UI. I think it is Android. They show the long namsspace name for the application...and some apps show other weird names as well. It happens when you reboot the phone, at least for me. I think it has to do with the way the apps register themselves when the phone boots. Or it may be sloppy programming in the manifest files. Not sure.
Having the same issues. Google Sky will actually show up as the first application, and titled something with about an End User Agreement. When launched it pops up the EUA and only option is a force close.
Not sure what is causing it either.

I bet if you reboot your phone the issue will return though...try it!!!
If that IS the case, see my post in this CDMA forum about app versions reverting. what has happened is that your app, in this case google sky, has reverted to an initial version, without telling you.

Just tested this and you are correct! Google Sky maps and Google Voice are the ones that do this for me.

I've confirmed that this app version reverting issue happens with at least 16 apps, not just the two Google apps you mention. I have a support question open with Google, so hopefully they can figure it out soon. It makes people think something else is wrong entirely.

I really think this now too,
so far i reinstalled Flixster Movies and Handcent SMS and when my phone reboots i get some different weird icon for both that are not the original ones.
also with the reboot, one of my original problems happens with the names of ChompSMS and Google Voice with their com.xxx.etc names
it has to be something changed on a reboot.

Mercado, would you mind also informing them that a reboot also is causing apps to revert to their older versions? I think the problems are related. Thanks!

Oops! Sorry for making it sound like I am in on the android developer work. It is way over my head. Just thought I'd share a link I'd stumbled across. If it's kosher, perhaps you might want to share the url to your version reverting bug with that group. Not sure how that works.
In any case, it does seem like this is all related (missing icons, duplicate icons, renamed shortcuts, version issues, etc.). Unfortunately, it so far HTC has not acknowledged their role in the matter. Hopefully as the bug reports add up, they'll do something about it. Or, maybe they'll simply release Android 2.0 with Sense built in.

After all, without visibility, a problem will never get solved.

App Ops Removed

So, I installed permission manager since I had it on my Nexus 7, and it started to crash. I realized after going through Nova's shortcuts that App Ops was actually removed. I found that to be kind of strange. I was actually hoping that this would be even more accessible in versions after 4.3. Anyone else notice this?

[Q] Multiple questions about the Moto G

hi everybody!
sorry for the non-descriptive title, but i have some questions i'd like to ask here. i just got my moto g 2 days ago, i switched from a samsung galaxy s+ (with cm10.2) so this is quite the change for me, hardware and software wise.
[ANSWERED] 1. first i missed the possibility to swipe my keyboard to type, i found many different apps for that, but my question would be what is the keyboard included in cyanogenmod? because since this can 'see' everything i type i want an app for that i can trust...
[ANSWERED] 2. i really liked the cLock app for time and weather in cm, but google-ing 'clock app' wasnt the most helpful thing i've ever done ^^ so here my queston would be aswel whats the cyanogenmod cLock app and where can i find it?!
[ANSWERED] 3. next thing would be how can i get something like pdroid on this device (i had it on the sgs+)? i would need root i assume, i saw lots of different methods for that aswel. one with like contacting motorola to get the rom unlocked or something like that. so whats the easiest way to get a privacy control on the moto g? i remember something like the new android has some inbuilt setting for that?!?
[ANSWERED] 4. something that is irritating me quite a lot are the software keys, because samsung has the back key on the right side and the moto has it on the left side. also i dont understand why there would be a key for recent apps instead of a menu key. same here: i saw lots of different methods to change that, some even with adding or getting rid of lines of the code. ok i managed to install cm on my sgs, but thats a little out of my capabilities ^^ so again what would be the easiest way to change the buttons around?
[ANSWERED] 5. another thing would be, how do i turn off the vibration when using the keyboard? i tried the setting under 'sound' -> 'vibrate on touch' (or something along those lines) but that didnt turn off all of the vibration, for example its still vibrating when i use the keyboard but not anymore when i open apps or menus.
maybe there is even the possibility to install a stable version of cyanogenmod on the moto g which would solve most of my issues? but since this is running so smoothly i dont want any nightly builds, alphas or betas on this thing right now...
btw i am using the nova launcher in case that makes any difference for any of the questions above!?
also i include this screenshot with all the version numbers in it because it might be useful: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B5JftqugO1xsbnh1dTBrQzZVWXc/edit?usp=sharing
thanks a bunch in advance and for reading and i hope someone is willing and able to help me out here!:fingers-crossed:
EDIT:
all the questions above have been answered! only one more question is open atm, [ here ] thanks to everyone who contributed so far!

You can install the stock google keyboard from the play store for using swype, And there is cyangenmod version available for the G, you should go to the Moto G Original Android Development section of the forum for that. The vibration option should be in your sound / keyboard settings so you just need to look better i gues.

thanks again, sadly the play store says: 'This app is incompatible with all of your devices.' and it seems this is because of some kind of regional restrictions for this app and/or my country. i cant imagine what and why that would be but i cant download it from there, is there any other way to get this? like an .apk or something?

I suggest to install Xposed framework (Root needed), and then you can have this features with Gravity Box and Xprivacy (these are modules for Xposed).
In order to root, you have to unlock the bootloader (follow the instruction on Motorola website), then install a Custom recovery (I suggest Philz one) and supersu from Play store

hi and thank you for your contribution! i have unlocked and rooted my device successfully and installed the xposed framework. i havent quite got the hang of how xprivacy works as of now since its a little different from pdroid (and somewhat confusing imo). but thats just a matter of time i guess. i'll start reading here: https://github.com/M66B/XPrivacy#xprivacy or is there a better quick start guide?
i assume i can uninstall the 'xprivacy installer' (the one from google play) after i installed 'xprivacy'? and that gravity box is for the softkeys and its this one here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2554049 ? i'll look into that tomorrow, since its getting late here and i dont wanna mess up now ^^

Mornin', you're very welcome!
Xprivacy it's kind of complicated, but that reading will help you. I admit I don't use it, but I know it gives you full control on privacy and this is what you were looking for As you said, it's just a matter of time!
Btw you can install modules directly from Xposed Installer application, so you can bypass the Play Store.
Yes that's gravity box: it's very good and popular, you can surely reverse/set all the software keys, but also do a lot of modding!
It's more intuitive than Xprivacy, just go ahead options and try them, it's safe!
Good luck and forgive my english!

i am no native english tongue myself, so i dont notice anything wrong with your english. no need to excuse, i make mistakes myself.
i was under the impression that you could do 'stupid' stuff with xprivacy, like i was able to deny my camera app access to the camera with pdroid. that was a good way to test if it was properly working. so i tried and deny firefox access to 'internet' but that didnt seem to work, but then again it especially said its no going to break apps. i dig into all of this further later on.
just a question, what would be a good way to verify it is working like its supposed to? talking about xprivacy here...
edit: and to answer my question no.5: there is another setting for vibration in the keyboard itself, so you have to go through -> language and input -> select settings on your keyboard -> vibrate on key push (or sth along those lines), so basically you have to turn it off twice.

I just tried it and i had no problem to deny the access for Firefox. When you open xprivacy in the app list tap on the Firefox Logo, not on the name or the checkbox. If you do so the details will open. If you now tick the category "Internet" then you will see that it is checked as a square, not as a hook. If it is a square it is only partially blocked. If you go now into the details of the category "Internet", you will see, that not all options are checked. Some are even marked red because they might be essential for the functionalty of the specific app. If you check also these and maybe also all others, then you can prevent Firefox of getting access to the Internet. If you check all items in Internet manually you'll see that category internet has now a hook than a square.
but then again it especially said its no going to break apps.

You can check for example all outgoing connections to the internet from your device. I have not tested this tool, or similar like that, but i will now because i just had the idea Else you can also prevent Facebook app to connect. I use Auto Hide Softkey App. I can for example prevent that it uses the overlay function, so it can not modify the UI and hide the Navbar.
Xprivacy is a very powerful tool. If you want it more simple, you can activate the in Android but Disabled inbuilt AppOPS App (search for AppOPS). But it is also less powerful.
I bought xprivacy. If you buy it, you can download the restrictions automatically and upload yours for others. You are also able to export end import the settings if licensed. Also nice that you can buy it via Paypal because i do not have a Credit Card (and i don't want).

well you explained it yourself pretty much, the app was designed to not break apps in the way they work but restrict them from your privat data. so when i clicked firefox'es internet permission and it had the square, i disabled some but not all of it. thats all i was saying

I bought xprivacy. If you buy it, you can download the restrictions automatically and upload yours for others. You are also able to export end import the settings if licensed. Also nice that you can buy it via Paypal because i do not have a Credit Card (and i don't want).

i wasnt on my computer for quiet some time so i couldnt answer on this thread, my apologies.
i bought the pro version of xprivacy with paypal too and i synced my permissions for all apps with the cloud or crowd. it could find and sync most of my apps which is a nice and easy way to get around the ridiculous amount of permissions to set for each app.
can you confirm that most of the synced crowd settings make sense in the way of privacy protection? because i havent looked too much into all those settings but even when i did i couldnt quiet understand them in depth...
also @Landrea thanks for recommending gravity box, that thing is amazing! i was able to restore most of the cyanogenmod settings i was missing, great! also i could reconfigure my softkeys, but i am thinking about this app here to maximize my usable screensize:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.gmd.hidesoftkeys
or
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.tsorn.FullScreen
or is there a setting for that in gravity box i missed?

You're welcome!
Check navigation bar settings in gravity box, you can change the size of the soft keys and gain space.
Go for that apps if you think you need more usable screensize (hard to believe)

I am using paranoid android 4.6 beta 1 on the defualt kernel that comes with it.... I am not using xposed module or any other modifications... I am on default theme...
Whenever I open the gallery only some images load up (the recent ones) for the thumbnail preview and even when opened for the remaining many I get grey thumbnails and when openedgrey boxes..
I know this has something to do with media scanning being enabled at startup... But I didn't do anything to screw it up... I had this issue previously... But since no one helped I simply got back to stock ROM.. Pa 4.6 and a couple of releases before it worked well... It got back when I clean flashed the ROM yday!
Why not ask in the rom thread, where the guys that use the rom are?
Also, you may want to consider a more detailed title for your threads in the future... Many won't even open a thread with a vague or barely existent title. ?

Well, not sure what to say. Try clean flashing it again. About ago you can do.
Or ask in their thread, maybe someone else has had it happen. ?
Really your only options.
try this app - old thumbnails and grey boxes were displaying on mine, i had to scan everytime i deleted images, i think it was since i switched back to art, i started from scratch - no longer needed the app, i wasnt using PA

I can't tell if the gray thumbnails are actual photos sometimes. I normally delete them. You can use a File Manager and delete .thumbnails is whatever folder, as well attempt a reboot.

Is there a way to disable bubbles and re-enable chat heads for Facebook Messenger in 11?

I'm sure I'm not alone in thinking chat bubbles kind of... Suck. They're buggy, they disappear at random, they don't work properly, etc.
So I'm hoping, through rooting or something like that, there's a way to disable bubbles entirely to make Facebook Messenger think the device doesn't support them. I know for a fact that on a Note 20 Ultra running 11, you can completely disable bubbles and Messenger goes back to using chatheads - but disabling them on my Pixel 3a (Android 11) just prevents any sort of popup notification.
Is there a command, rom, Magisk, or something to do this? And I'd rather not install an old version of Messenger again since Facebook disabled the ability to share pictures and videos for old versions.
FB is malware... and that's being too kind.
I tossed FB well over a decade ago.
It's far worse today... the bubbles are the least of its issues.
You may be able to turn off the bubbles in notification setting or globally...

Nope, sadly all that does is disable bubbles AND chatheads

Try all the options?
Personally I'd ditch FB as fast as possible as it's a proven weaponized data miner extreme.

Lol, you knew it was malware when you loaded it... ie scorpion and the frog
I wanna know the same. Bubbles are very buggy atm. Chat heads were perfect.

That's not in the spirit of this forum... so you "found" a toggle. Yay.
I disabled bubble notifications (hint) on Pie long ago.

No, I compiled an apk that disables the Bubble Notification API within the app, and in turn re-enables the default messenger chat heads. It's not hard to disable the bubbles, but that's not the point. Almost no one in this thread wants to disable bubble notifications because it does not bring back chat head functionality.

Yeah I realized it was about FB after I posted.
I haven't posted FB in over a decade...
in fact I stopped using it within the first month.
Fb's history speaks for itself.

Lol okay but you had already warned the guy twice about Facebook's security issues, why'd you have to say it AGAIN and word it the way you did? He obviously acknowledges now that he's basically giving away his personal information for someone else to sell, so just leave it at that.

Do you have any documentation of your fix working?

Also, I'm new here, but I think asking for donations up front is against the rules of the forum. I'd be happy to donate if the fix works though. I think I have $10-15 worth of crypto in my wallet if that works.

Honestly bro, I wouldn't update to 11 just yet. Even if the apk I provided was perfect (it's not though), I still prefer Android 10 over 11. Aside from that, there is one standing issue with the apk I compiled. Since Android 11 fixed some "issues" with the Apps Drawing Over Other Apps, there are now display issues with Messenger's chat heads, but only while in landscape mode. It works flawlessly in portrait mode, but when you enter landscape mode for some reason the heads fly off the screen to the bottom right and when you open a chat it opens it below the viewport, therefore just displaying an opaque overlay and nothing else. Very annoying for gamers who use Messenger a lot like I do, but for most it isn't a huge deal.

First of all, thanks for the detailed explanation
So the landscape mode problem you just mentioned is exactly the one I hate the most about Messenger on Android 11
I thought your apk can fix that, but turns out it couldn't
Still very appreciate your work ^^

Yeah, sorry about that man. Unfortunately, I'm not smart enough to properly decompile Messenger to change values and stuff like that. Under normal circumstances I would have done it already, but Facebook uses their own method of decompilation protection, with their own custom value types and things like that. People have tried on multiple occasions to decompile it but it's just too complicated. Not sure what they're trying to protect, to be honest. But if someone else would be willing to help me out with decompiling, I'd be glad to fix the display issues!
