Backing up phone before flash.. - ONE Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've flashed many phones many times, but when i do so i always delete then never backup any of my apps or my data and go back into the play store and install 100 apps again doing the same process every time. I would like to install the new slim ROM to my phone and don't want to go through the hassle of re installing every app in my drawer currently. My question is how do you guys backup your apps and data and if you do it with titanium backup?

I recommend buying the Pro version so the user can just 1 click batch restore/backup as well.

I'll second that. Best few bucks I ever spent.

Well...titanium backup is a rooted only app so your phone has to be rooted in order to use it. If it is not and you still have your bootloader locked I think there is no option as with the latest updates you can't gain root access without unlocking your phone, which requires a full wipe

Here is an app I have used in the past and its only if you are rooted. Its called app2zip.Read up on it and test it out to see if it works for your needs. Also there may be a newer version or similar app that does the same thing. You can flash your rom then flash your apps and data all in one session. I would not recommend backing up system apps.
Edit: It seems this app has not been updated since January but developer said he got it to work with Kitkat... Again please research before trying

Yesss go with Titanium Backup Pro, just backup your apps, flash a new Rom and restore your backup and you are done

[Q] Backups: Which is best Titanium or Recovery ROM

I have a rooted One S running Klin's Unofficial AOKP JellyBean Build 2 [9/19/12].
I have downloaded but have yet to use Titanium Backup. But I regularly back up all my system, data and settings with TWRP2.2
My question is what benefits would running a Titanium back up give me over the recovery?
Ta
You can backup or restore apps or their data one at a time with TiB
OK. Not sure why I would want to do that at the moment. I dare say there might be an occaision when I will, but it doesn't seem like a huge advantage. TRWP is just so easy to use.
Thanks

They dont really do the same thing as your recovery takes a backup of your whole ROM and your apps and settings. TiB is more granular and also cannot backup your ROM. You could compare them to PC stuff, then TWRP or CWM backups are like a whole disk image like what you can get with Symantec Ghost. You could restore this after your OS is completely broken and quickly be up and running again like you never downloaded that addon to see who has blocked you on MSN Messenger. A TiB style backup wouldnt help you then but it would be good to have a TiB style backup of WoW with all your addons, settings and goldfarming bots ready to go after you reinstalled Windows.
OK that makes much more sense. I'll give it a go. I have flashed four or five ROMs over the last few days and have noticed a twrp restore doesn't get things back exactly as I'd like them.
Thanks again

The only thing I use TiB for personally is to backup, uninstall and restore Swiftkey3 so it doesn't have to be setup again at every reboot, this is a jellybean bug with paid apps. Maybe not present in AOKP? Also works for other paid apps and widgets acting out apparently.

Backup app data with Samsung Smart Switch?

Good day.
Yesterday it has been available in this forum the beta nougat rom and i am eager to flash it in my phone :fingers-crossed:
My phone is not rooted and i wanted to backup the app data before flashing.
After extensive search in google i found that Samsung Smart Switch can be used to backup app data without root.
Has anyone successfully backed up and restored app data with it, after a full wipe?
Thank you.
Hi! I used it and worked fine for 90% of all my stuff. Only some settings like system sound and a few apps werent correctly restored

Dafuq? I used it to backup everything and after a wipe I restored but then had to set up each one of my apps from scratch! They have been installed by Smart Switch, but all were in initial state...
The only 'true' backup and restore is TWRP Nandroid backup
Others don't work properly in my experience
KIES was the worst

It can't f*ing be that there's no solution for a complete app-data backup without root
Even that piece-of-crap software called itunes backs up everything, as far as I remember.
Knox knocks me off.
This is the first phone that i want, but can't root. (As i already screwed up and had to send it to Samsung once). I Miss good old Titanium backup and TWRP.
It seems that is possible to flash Nougat beta without losing data.
Thank you everyone for your replies!

AFAIK you can't. A rooted phone can't accept the OTA. You would need to Odin the stock firmware, update and then root again.

If you want to stick with the rooted stock ROM, my suggestion would be to backup your phone to the Samsung Cloud, then Odin the new ROM, then restore from the Samsung Cloud. You will get most of your stuff back, including screen layouts, widgets and apps.
If you use one of the fine ROMs by one of the XDA developers - they eventually usually come up with new versions that include the lastest bases, and many times, not every time, you can dirty flash it over your existing ROM and not have to restore much if anything. Of course, your experience may be different so make a nanroid backup via TWRP first.

thanks for the help, i will stick to the stock rom and restore apps from titanium would be better i guess.
I updated my rooted S8+ by making a nandroid backup with TWRP first and then flashing the updated ROM (which will totally wipe your device and remove root).
After that I flashed the TWRP recovery again, formatted through TWRP, and then flashed no verity/Magisk etc. I booted into the system normally once just to be on the safe side and check that everything was looking good.
Lastly, I went back to TWRP and used my nandroid backup and the restore function to bring back just the Data partition and my phone was completely restored. All apps, settings, wallpapers, text messages etc etc where restored with 0 issues exactly how I left them.
Keep in mind that the data partition will not back up user data on the internal memory like pictures, videos and some downloads. You'll want to copy the contents of your internal memory to a PC or external memory and then copy them back and merge them with the new folders at the end. :good:

SMS Backup w/o app

Hello,
My GFs phone has suddenly decided to crash almost every app as soon as you open them. I've decided that I'm going restore her phone.
Problem is that I need to backup her text messages. Seeing how SMS Backup and Restore, SMS Backup+, and similar apps won't work, I was wondering if there is a solution to transfer via USB or something similar that doesn't require an app.
Thanks!

Titanium backup does it. provided your phone is rooted.
There is also an app on the pc called syncios. that wont require root
My advice, Since you are already reseting your phone(which is the most tedious step reqd to root) i think you should just unlock bootloader and root and then install stock cm13 or any other rom if you want.
Use bacon root toolkit for the same. google it.

Thanks for your response! Fortunately apps started randomly working again, so I was able to use SMS Backup & Restore to make a backup.
I'm going to help her return to stock CM, because she's on Oxygen OS right now, and turns out they haven't had a security update since 2015 (GULP!).

Anyway to clean flash Android 10 stable without losing data?

Hey guys just wondering if anyone knows how to clean flash update to 10 stable from 9 without losing data? I want to try android 10 but don't want to lose all my data and if I use Titanium Backup, it usually messes up notifications when I restore my apps? Any help appreciated !

It can cause issues. Many advice never to do it but many do it and deal with what ever gremlins tend to happen.

It really depends on which android/ oxygen OS you are updating to. If you are in 9.5.X and updating to 9.5.XX, then a dirty flash is ok. But if you are upgrading to Android 10/ OOS10, then it's better to clean flash

It's impossible to keep your data on a clean flash unless you are previously rooted, have Titanium backup, did a complete backup, and saved that backup on a computer. Once you have clean flashed (and assuming you have rooted again), you can restore the data from the titanium backup. But.......if you are upgrading from 9.0 to 10.0, then it's not advisable to restore app data from titanium backup as the backup will have 9.0 data while you are on 10.0. It will lead to force closes eventually making you to uninstall and reinstall the apps.
P.S.: and if ever you figure out how to root 10.0 let me know

IMHo Titanium backup is abandoned project. It was my favorite root app a while ago.
Now when I was migrating from OnePlus 6t to OnePlus 7 pro (same android version) I had lots of force closes after restoring data or no restore at all. Even OnePlus migration app did a better job. So I am actively searching for alternatves now

Yeah I agree. I wasn't 100% it was abandoned but if that's the case, what a shame. That was a classic application that people have been using for years.

I did a local install from 9 to 10 using the full download package.
No issues. I like to walk on the wild side though.
I always dirty flash via local upgrade.

i'm still on OnePlus 6 [OP6] (it's the last model, with headphone socket )
and i have huge love for Titanium Backup [TiBu], however i have read that it's kind of broken for Android 10
for those migrating to OP7 or to Android 10, it did not work properly, etc.
there are ways to prevent TiBu to avoid "no restore", e.g. in "App Processing Mode" to play around with options called 'AUTO, Indirect' or 'INTERACTIVE').
there alternatives which are gaining more popularity to TiBu

I already switched using swift backup. Developer is very active and supportive in telegram. But I didn't had a chance for testing it with a phone migration yet.
