[TUT][DIY] Cheap External Antenna For HTC Sensation - HTC Sensation

Hi folks, several days ago I bought an 18cm high GSM antenna (really cheap, about $5 if I convert it to USD), and also bought a cheaper (if I convert it to USD it will be $0.66) SMA connector for it, and realized that the antenna connectors of the Sensation are on it's back cover, so I could simply connect the antenna to the phone.
well, first of all you'd better to watch W2AEW's awesome video about Decibels to actually understand what you're doin'.
here's the antenna I've bought (the seller told me it's 18cm high but it's 19.5cm :silly:

and this is the SMA connector, before you buy the connector, you have to find out if your antenna's connector is male or female. in my case it was male so I bought a female connector for it:
then you have to solder some wires to your antenna, one for the ground and another for the signal. coaxial cable is the best solution because of lower noise but it's so thick, here is some antenna wires I just found with a quick search on Ebay, and they're not that thick. also keep wires as short as possible, in my case I just wanted to test the antenna so didn't care about the wires:
the two connectors above the camera on the back of the phone are for WiFi, and the two below the SD Card are for GSM. so I connected the wires of antenna to the bottom ones, and, here's the result:
with the original antenna (which is the cover door of the phone):
without any antennas (without cover door):
with the external antenna:
I'm planning to drill a hole on a cheap cover door and mount the antenna on the cover, and also add some more antennas like GPS and WiFi. (then probably it won't fit in any pocket :silly:  )
if you tried it too, please hit the thanks button. :good:

well, I haven't still mounted it on the door of my sensation, but I'm going to do it, and when I did it I'll add the photo of it. this post was just for confirming that it works this way.

All right, I'm waiting excited for the photo(s)

another thing I wonder is that if we can add an external antenna without loosing the 3G capability.
edit: I'm working on adding the antenna beside internal antenna so it will have both EDGE and HSDPA.

Thats really cool!
Will have a try this week

It works and increases the db, but unfortunately it doesn't solve my problem, I wanted to keep in touch in a place which is far away from the operator antennas, but it doesn't help me because of the huge distance, maybe I should switch to another operator. so I discontinue this project but it doesn't mean that it doesn't work.

Sad to hear, that it doesn't really satisfy your situation and you discontinued the project. Can you please share a picture of the back cover anyway?

back cover on qtek 8310

Hi all,
I have the following isue: after I gave my qtek 8310 to my sister, it seems the back cover is somewhat broken or malformed because I cannot close it. My sister told me she hasn't done anything but it is possible she forced the back cover in some way. When I try closing the back cover, it doesn't fit well to the phone's body and doesn't make a click sound as usual. As a result it cannot be attached to the phone's body and fully closed. This happens even when there is no battery installed.
Visually I cannot see anything broken and the plastic seems OK. There are no obvious malformations.
Has anyone had such similar issue? Maybe I have to buy a new cover, however I haven't found any website to purchase spare parts for the qtek 8310.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!
yo! post here snapshots of the "unshut" back cover so that we may see how can we help ya
10x for the reply.
I will make the shots tonight with my camera and post the links.
even if u dont post, i suspect that either of these slots of ur cell phone are blocked:

Same problem
Hi, I have got the same problem. I have found, the back cover get broken because the battery was old and become "bigger" (got inflated by gas produced in battery by chemical reaction). I have changed the battery, but have not found way to repair the back cover. Maybe just use some hot temperature...
Got the same problem here: seems like the battery has curved (!) it has got a slight bump...
the battery doesn't fit properly anymore - same with the back-cover!
Also my battery drain is quite high... well, it's an 3 year old tornado
on the grey cover, inside, theres the 2 clips, one of them was bent downwards touching the surface, and thus i couldnt slide the cover on without it lopsided or loose. I just lifted the clip a little and fixed it. Be careful its like cheap plastic, felt like it would break easily

Hi again, it seems my problem was exactly the same like lmf's. I just lifted the clips and now the cover fits and slides correctly.
Thank you very much 'dark_prince' for the picture and advice and 'lmf' for further tips. Now I have a happy working tornado with a back cover If we ever meet in real life I owe you many, many beers
Lol that strange maybe you cellphone is pregnet by a noki or a sonyerricson

Another dock

I bought this dock for my wife's Sensation, and tried it on my MT4GS, and it fitted without a problem.
http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B007CU1XZM
when the HTC Sensation is fitted, the headphone socket is obscured, but with the MT4GS you can slide the display up of course and expose the headphone jack. It does shift the centre of gravity which could be a problem.
the fit is quite tight you if you do have a case you'll have to remove it - or at least the case back if you have the keyboard open.
if anyone wants, I'll take a photo with it fitted.
I guess you could drill out a whole for a headphone....
Here's the US market version. http://www.amazon.com/Aftermarket-Product-Charging-Replacement-Sensation/dp/B006VAKXZA

The phone sits pretty well, the keyboard is a little bit slid out as the phone is a bit thicker, and there's no access to the power button. Pretty good thing for 9 bucks value. I'm considering about adopting this dock for my car and it would be nice to have audio-out also there at the same time. Anybody done this?

Well, I bought different dock (also for Sensation) for $10, which you can see in this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1710736
I had the same idea as you do, to use it as a "stand" in my car. I have tried that in a "dry test" and it seemed like a good idea at first, so I ordered second dock and when it arrived I just placed it on rubbery-gel mat on my dashboard and voila - good to go, or so I thought.
Unfortunately when I started to drive with it, the phone rattles. Placing thin rubber strips didn't help, it only eliminated the noise, but the phone was still (silently now) rattling there on the dock while driving. I was afraid this constant vibration will damage the microUSB port sooner or later, since the port is the only thing holding the phone on the dock, and after couple days I quit using it. Also inserting and removing phone to/from dock wasn't comfortable, because my windshield is at pretty high angle I couldn't just insert phone into dock or remove it from dock, unfortunately I had to take the whole dock towards steering wheel to do it.
I'm just placing my phone on a dashboard mat against the fold (so it stays in horizontal mode upright) and plug the sound cable from my wifi transmitter and power cable if needed. This way is the most convenient way for me. If I won't forget I'll take some pictures.
Anyways, I would strongly advise against using any desktop docks in a car, because - regardless of dock's model or shape - they all have 1 thing in common: phone is being hold there just by the microUSB plug, which is not designed for this purpose, and it is rather delicate and easy to damage (once I broke miniUSB plug in my HTC TyTN II just by slightly prying phone into the dock because I was too lazy to get up in my bed... and the miniUSB socket by design is way sturdier than this crappy microUSB socket in our MT4GS).
Driving will cause the phone to shake/vibrate/rattle in the dock on your dashboard, and I am sure it will cause damage to the microUSB port sooner or later.
HTH
Thanks for the advice. Went to ebay for the official mytouch car kit with holder (with intergrated micro-USB connector) and found one for just a 10.5 bucks + S&H cost. Unfortunately, that seller doesn't ship internationally So I found another one, this time it costed total of 28 bucks. But for such price I get an ultimate solution.
Nice

[SOLVED] GPS Fixed!!! For real this time.

It's a noise issue with the gps antenna and other h/w on the board (mainly lcd cable.) It can be fixed by insulating the board from electrical shorts (scotch tape in my case) and shielding the board from the antenna with aluminum foil. Not for the faint of heart, obviously you can ruin your phone if not done correctly. If your wondering how much of a difference it'll make lets say my GPS works in my basement, in walmart, even in a multistory business office. I have yet to find a spot where it won't work. Most times it locks the instant it's opened, indoors you might have to wait maybe 10-30 secs.
If you think shielding the whole phone will help the other antennas, it won't I tried. You only have to do the corner that the GPS antenna is located and of course ground it. The GPS antenna is labeled with the letter G on the case of the phone. It's inbetween the camera, battery, and power button. Face down camera up, it's located upper left portion of the phone. Each antenna looks like a black label, please don't peal them off. Phone must be disassembled to perform this mod. I will not tell you how to take it apart (google it) nor be responsible if you break it. If you don't understand the concept of shielding or are unclear how to do this mod you shouldn't be doing it. You should be asking a friend that understands electronics better (aka major electronics geek) to do this for you.
Sorry I don't have pictures at this time.

Only the area where the GPS antenna resides needs to be shielded which on the Nexus S 4G happens to be circled in red.
Don't forget to protect the board from electrical shorts with scotch tape or the like.
Please don't put tape or aluminum foil over the spring terminals as they provide contact to the antennas on the back of the case.
The shield must be grounded for it to work, I used the metal casing inside the phone.
You can see where it comes close to the edge of the phone, it happens to be metal there and its grounded
In for pics. Also, which model phone.
crespo4g aka SPH-D720 aka Nexus S 4G
But TBH this solution should work on any phone that has bad GPS reception due to bad design and/or h/w interference.

Sounds similar to the other fix which didn't work for me. Do you have pics of your mod?

Yea I just put one up. I've tried many things myself but this has made my phone's GPS f***in fantastic and thought I'd share it with the rest of the world to enjoy. I first tried modifying my antenna with a wire after trying a bunch of useless s/w mods but still wouldn't work once reassembled and then it became obvious what must be done.
Dude, that fix looks so hood rich. I love it.

Original HTC Sensation back cover (housing) ?

Does anyone know where can I find a genuine HTC Sensation back cover? I've scoured across amazon, ebay and such online shops, but most of the covers sold are not genuine and some just have photos of the real deal but sell fake ones(not necesserily bad ones). Both new and used would be fine, as long as it's in good condition. If anyone has any experience with this matter, any input will be greatly appreciated. I need this original housing because mine has some cosmetic damage...

I got a new one from a seller on Amazon for $12 half a year ago.
Someone is practically giving them away on eBay. I haven't bought one from him myself, but he's using the OEM part number. I don't see any reason to suspect they are not OEM, but I can't say for certain.

Genuine, AND from Hong Kong? The two don't normally go hand in hand in my experience...

Does anyone have any actual experience using a sensation case that does not have the copper connector to the left of the speaker? All the pictures I found, like the one below, show every connector except that specific one beside the speaker and I don't want to commit to one if it's going to reduce my signal quality.

i think the best way to answer your question is to look at your phone and see if the indented area where the part your wondering about is supposed to insert into, and see if there are gold plates inside. mine doesnt have it so it doesnt matter which type i use (i have 2 different covers, one thats gold and one that black, i get the same signal either way). if yours does, then you better find a cover that is gold in that area

I broke my GPS antenna like a moron

Hi guys,
Well, I'm that idiot who broke his GPS/WiFi antenna.
With the new launch of the OP3, and my utterly empty wallet, I thought it was about time to replace the battery on my OPO since it was lasting about half a day now. Ordered a battery online, broke apart my phone, replaced the battery, bish bash bosh didn't take long at all.
Little did I know, when taking off the board protector it looks like I managed to snap off this little bugger (red circle bottom right):
{

}
Since I didn't realise I'd done it, I never found the little bit I broke off and it's forever into the void (you know, the one where socks and case screws go).
Since I'm a very broke university student and I really wanted my OPO to last me another 2-3 years without me getting lost (I have a really horrible sense of direction), does anybody have any knowledge about this board that would give me a hand modding it to have the antenna work again?
If only it were just WiFi, or bluetooth, or NFC, or something else I never use, but it had to be GPS, the thing I use constantly!
If anybody could help me I'd appreciate it significantly, and if you're nearby I'll buy you a pint. Or a pizza. Or something.
Thanks guys.
PS My battery lasts two days now, so I've got that going for me, which is nice.

I think someone else did the same thing and hacked theirs with a piece of foil or something. It's just a contact. Maybe you got a bud who can do some nice surface-solder.

Possibly, yeah. I might fiddle around with it. It looks like the tiny antenna slot on the left of the red circle is the part of the same antenna system, do you reckon if I plugged an antenna cable into that it would be a workaround? I don't suppose you happen to know what that type of connector is called?
Cheers.
