Hey guys! So I was using my Moto G at about 55% charge when I locked the screen. Came back and found it turned off. I thought it was very strange as it couldn't have turned off due to the battery. But as I tried to turn it on again it showed no response. Plugged my Samsung charger in (5v-0.7A) and the battery icon came up with "0%" beneath it. So I let it charge. Checked about an hour late, it was still at 0%. Holding down the power button didn't work. Tried the VOL DOWN+POWER button combination too, didn't work. Nothing's working. This has been going on since the last 5 days. Today I plugged in the original charger and the LED light blinked a lot at first. Then the icon came up and then the screen turned off, and the LED light is constantly blinking like normal. This gives me a bit of hope. But the button combinations still do not work.
So, can anyone please help me out? I still haven't tried the freezer option. Will that work? Is it safe?
Also, this is my daily driver. I can't return this phone nor can I claim any warranty. I need this phone and will do everything to get it back to its old self.
Hope I can get it back to its working condition with the help of the amazing people here on xda
Thank you!

And some things I forgot to mention: The phone is totally stock, running KitKat 4.4.4. It's the XT1033. And the original charger's output rating is: 5V-500mA.

It's a known battery bug, sometimes happens... I resolved using the Motorola AC/DC original charger, just leaving it connected for 2 hours then I long pressed the power button (for about 10-15 seconds) until I saw the battery icon. If this doesn't work you could try to open (carefully) your device with a screwdriver, unplug the battery (very easy, you will find a tutorial on YouTube), wait 5 min, plug it again and reassemble it.

Yea, its charging continuously since an hour now and the LED light is blinking. Will try what you just suggested and will give an update.

Is this cable the same you have used to charge before? Its weird but some cables will not charge my moto G, even tho I can charge other devices with them
I've been having this issue today as well.
I am Rooted, bootloader unlocked, and running custom ROMs. XT1031CDMA Boost Model
If I leave on charger it just keeps looping to the white 0% screen then vibrates and trys again, endlessly.
[even to the point of being dangerously hot]
one thing that finally worked for me was this.
I already found out if you hold Vol Down while plugging in , then releasing Vol Down, will quickly take you to fastboot screen [haven't seen this mentioned before]
So I would start with that and choose recovery, which would fail because there was not enough battery charge.
I found that if I unplugged the charger and plugged it back in before it vibrated it finally came up to the black screen with the colored 1% charging screen and now it is taking a charge again.
Which you can verify the charging percentage by pressing the Vol Down button
It took me several attempts to get this right, so just keep trying to unplug/plug during the time after you have chosen to boot to recovery from fastboot mode.
[[also there may have been a Vol Down button press needed too. I am trying to remember all the things and I was trying a lot of different combinations to get it to charge again, so please let me know if that ultimately does or does not work]]

Using the Samsung charger, it just shows the 0% and the battery icon. But when I use the original Motorola charger, the white notification light starts blinking. Don't know how this happens. But the light gives me hope that the system is actually working and nothing is wrong with that. But why does the light blink only when I plug in the original charger?

The thing is that as soon as I unplug, it turns off because there's absolutely no charge. The fastboot mode also shows "Battery Low".
So when I select recovery it immediately goes to the 0% battery icon screen. Still, I'll keep on trying your method.
What I am trying to figure out now, is that why both different chargers show different behaviour of the phone? Like, using the Samsung one, when I select recovery it goes to the battery icon and using thd original charger it goes to a black screen and the notification light starts blinking. Do you know anything about it?

I feel sure thats how I was doing it
plug charger into phone
VOL DOWN+POWER button combination for 2:00 + minutes
then release,
phone enters fastboot mode, shows "low Battery'
press 'vol down' to recovery
press 'vol'up' to proceed
wait for fastboot screen to turn off
quickly unplug charger and re-plug in charger
.
as far as I know it flashes the white led when it has shutdown because of low battery
I believe you have to perform the
VOL DOWN+POWER button combination for 2:00 + minutes
to get phone out of the 'state' it is on to be able to accept charging mode again
.

So, I tried it again.
Got to the fastboot mode but as soon as I select recovery, it goes back to the 0% screen. There's even no vibration. I only get time to turn the switch on and off directly from the wall.
But I'll keep on trying it and hopefully it will work.
Also, this is the system that is stopping the battery from getting charged, right?

The battery software bug on the G is well known over at Moto- although your case puts a new twist on it If you haven't already, check out the forums at their website. The Moto engineers, devs, and other employees regularly cruise those threads and even respond occasionally. Point being, because it is a well known issue, if you can't get some assistance, they will replace your device with their warranty exchange service. I had to do that with my first G and it took less than 48 hrs to get my new phone to me. free. YES it was a rooted and unlocked phone I was exchanging for a brand new device. Because we have to email Moto to get the unlock code, I has apprehensive that the customer service rep would know that mine was UL and tell me I'm SOL. But no, Moto is cool like that. They didn't ask any of those questions and I didn't volunteer the info! So when my new phone came, I UL that & restored a nandroid and have been good to go. That was like 5 months ago.
I tell you all this to say, cheer up my friend! there is light at the end of the tunnel. Talk to Moto.

Thank you! Yes, I hope too that they are able to replace it but there isn't any kind of customer service centre or any kind of official support in Pakistan by Moto.
But I did read once in a forum that Moto asked the guy to ship the phone to them and once they received it, they sent him a new one.
And they really should replace it since it's under warranty and it's a pretty common bug

I didn't talk to anyone on the phone or go to a service center, I used the live chat with a representative feature on their website to initiate the return.
The way that it worked for me, is that after I notified them, they Fedex'd me the new device. They also included inside that shipment an envelope that had a new pre-paid Fedex shipping label on it. So all I had to do was put my old phone in that envelope and drop it off at fedex and it went back to Moto. It didn't cost me a penny

Well maybe you will have some luck at some time.
I do know that when in fastboot that the vol up is the (select) or (enter) function.
Using the power button only tries to reboot.
---------- Post added at 10:34 PM ---------- Previous post was at 10:11 PM ----------
I would look at getting to the battery as mentioned earlier.
It takes either a t4 or t5 torx screwdriver and remove the about 10 screws and the cover so you can disconnect to battery.

Ok, so I did a live chat session and when they asked for my location, they said that this live chat is for support in the USA only. She redirected me to some forums. Went through the forums and everyone suggested the vol down+power button combination. Went to the Indian page where they just had a pdf of their customer service centers in India.
Long story short, no chance of replacement.
I am thinking about letting it sit without plugging in the charger for about 24 hours and then plugging in the original charger for 24 hours. Hopefully that should work.

This morning, I had noticed my G Tablet had been running sluggishly. So I thoight it was just that wakeup bug, but then when I shut it off and tried to restart it, I saw nothing on the screen - at all. I could not even get it into APX mode to see if using nvflash would somehow bring it to life. But I did notoce one thing. When the adapter was plugged in, the charging light would flash red. Is there anything that I can do? I dont want to return it, seeing as theyre in stock virtually nowhere.
My evo does something very similar when it turns off because the battery is 'totally' dead. When I plug it in, the charging light flashes until there is some minimal charge on the battery (maybe enough to turn it on), then the light goes solid and my evo charges normally.
Try plugging it in and just letting it charge, then see what happens.
Have you contact viewsonic support? You have 30. Days replacement warranty
I think it's frozen. I've had the same thing happen to me. If so, then you have two options:
1- Open up the back of the device and hit the reset button on the system board. Yes, there's a button in there for some bizarro reason. I assume this is not really an option for you, but wanted to mention it.
2- Leave the device unplugged and wait for the battery to completely drain (this takes about 24 hours). Once it's drained, plug it back in and hit the power switch and it should start up fine.
When this happens, the long press on the power doesn't seem to fix it. Our device really need a reset button on the outside of the device. Ugh.
Tried the opening thing - It doesn't work. So today I sent it back to Amazon for a refund. You know damn well I'm gonna buy myself another one! I'm mad though, it cost me $399 before, and now it went up to $419.
Sears.com has it for $379.
ETA: A little googling might yield a coupon code.
Why won't my XT720 start up?
When it is connected to my charger, the four action keys light up. Despite leaving it to charge overnight, it appears that the battery isn't charging. The phone won't start while it is charging, neither when connected to the mains or to my car power supply.
I bought a new battery without any improvement.
When I access the bootloader screen it says there is too little power in the battery to program the phone.
The phone is not recognised by my computer when connected.
The phone is running Froyo 2.2. with Dexter rom.
I would be very grateful for any suggestions......apart from binning the phone!
Thanks!
I think the phone likes to selfboot with too little charge. See if you can shut it down cleanly so it won't autoboot. It's annoying but you may have to watch it very carefully to catch it when it's trying to boot because it will drain itself back to death very quickly.

Hi Oakham, do you have any update to your case? I have the same problem now.
Yesterday, I noticed the battery bar went down to orange region (about 30%?). I plugged it to the wall for about an hour (the charging symbol showed up). Later I found out that the battery bar did not move (still stuck at orange region). Later the night, I tried to charge again (the bar was red at about 15% or less). The charging symbol showed up. Later I checked, the battery bar did not improve but declined. The phone eventually went out of battery and turned itself off.
I tried to continue to charge using both the wall outlet and PC USB. No luck. I could not even power up the phone now. Did you manage to resolve your case? Anyone got the same problem and found the solution?
I thought about buying a new battery to try, but then I saw your post, so I hesitated.
Thanks.

I've had this problem. Watching the phone closely while charging and pulling the battery whenever it starts to boot works. After about the fourth time doing this I got a battery charger from amazon for ~$5 because it's gently loving annoying.

Thanks for your advice.
So when you first bumped into this problem, how did you get it back to boot up?
I followed your advice to watch it while it's charging. When I saw the motorola logo showed up, I pulled the battery. Then I plugged it back and let it charged for some more time. Then I tried to power up the phone. The motorola logo came on and then the big battery symbol came on saying it's 100% full (but i knew it's not). Later, those 4 soft touch button lid on. This cycle repeated. And I'm clueless.
Please let me know the steps you took to recover your phone.
Thanks.

Once you get into the system use 'power off' from the menu. It won't autoboot then and you can leave it in the wall overnight. I think. A voodoo doll may work, too. It can be really frustrating, but I've been able to get out of it every time so far. Like I said, I got sick of this game and found a battery charger for pretty cheap.

Try deleting batterystats.bin and doing what M said.. can you get to open recovery and charge from there?
I also had the 'M' logo screen, stuck on-screen when the charger was connected. There is a post which suggests, for this, 'Pull battery.2) Insert battery and hit power button;3) As soon as you hit the power button, hold the volume up button down until the unboxing logo comes up.'
As my phone is still under warranty, I sent it back to see if there is a physical problem. I'll try the above suggested solution when my phone comes back from 'Motorola', whether or not it is repaired by them! I've also bought a battery charger for the phone's BP6X battery from e-Bay (£9.50, including another battery.)At least I will then know that a battery is fully charged before I try fixes.
Thanks for the other posts/replies!

Damn!
I had about the same. Battery got drained down from 80% to 5%. Then the screen for "please plug in for charging" appeared. Some moments later the phone went dark and now I can't get it to work again. It doesn't react on the power button. Even when plugged in the charging-symbol doesn't appear. I can't turn it on. Sucks!
Any ideas?
My phone has been repaired by Motorola, under warranty, and returned after four days. Accompanying report is brief: 'Software update and screening'. Seems to be working fine.......just like a brand new phone!
This morning i find myself in the same situation. My phone have the soft keys iluminated but it didint work.OMG... what happend durring the night. So i tried to boot the phone but nothing happend, and after reading tje post on the problem i have tried to remove the battery and put`it back, tryed anothe reboot, and holdind the buttons power+vol up. Nothing worked. But when i have tried the combination power + vol up + cammera shutter and plugged the cable. at first nothing happend. but after i have relesed the buttons the logo apeared and started charging. after that i powerd on my phone normaly
My phone does that everytime it charging and I remove the plug when it's in sleep mode. I have to remove the battery and it's power on normally.

Hello!
I just received my Infinity and started working on it, since there was a new Firmware available I downloaded and installed it.
When done it said "shutting down" and turned the Infinity off.
And this is were the trouble began .. since the last few hours I am trying to get it to work again but nothing seems to work.
Pressing the reset button with a paperclick won't work.
Volume down + Power only lets the Tablet vibrate after 10-12 seconds
Pressing power for 20 seconds (ASUS suggested this..) does the same thing.
with/without A/C Charger or docking station same thing, I get absolutely nothing on the screen.
When plugging it in via USB I get the APX mode.
Is there anything I can do at all? I don't want to send it back of course and thought APX Mode will maybe help me install and / fix something "blind" since I think the issue might be related to the Firmware upgrade..
Thanks in advance

I did try the button combinations, and for NVFlash it says: THIS REQUIRES A NON-BRICKED AND UNLOCKED DEVICE. IT WON'T WORK ON ALREADY BRICKED DEVICES
Well.. I think mine already could be bricked, and I can't unlock it by installing the apk
If pressing Volume Down +Power only give you a black screen and not even the Asus logo it means you are bricked (could also be a hw failure, who knows) ... APX mode is useless for your device. So if u can't manage to boot into recovery or in fastboot mode i would recommend you to start the RMA process.

Nope nothing, doesn't matter if I press up/down + power for how long all I get is a 1 second vibrate after 10-12 seconds, with or without the Volume keys.
Pad is charged, same with A/C, when I try without the LED next to the power doesn't even turn on
Pressing the reset with a paperclip won't work either as stated so I guess it really is a brick...
How can a official Firmware Upgrade brick a device? I'm not new to Android and already own 3 HTC's all rooted and stuff but I never came across something like this ..
A few Things you can still try to recover the Infinty
Dude, that absolutely SUCKS! I would be so disappointed / angry if I were in your position, especially having the tablet for a short time. It DOES sound like a hardware failure (video seems out, but it's almost as if the tablet is running dark, and you just have no video. Can you return it to the retailer you bought it from? That would be 1000% better than an RMA, which is another thing that Asus does extremely poorly (They use a 3rd Part servive out of Grapevine Texas, and in MOST cases it is a nightmare. I don't understand why you can't bring/send it back to the point of purchase. You are not requesting arefund, just exchange for defective tblet.
As a last resort, do this: RUN THE BATTERY FULLY DOWN. Do not put the charge on, and keep checking if the tablet is powered on (touch the power button quickly, like you are taking it out of sleep mode. This could take the better part of a full day/night, but if you run it until the battery fully discharges, I remember a Prime user that this saved the day. It certainly is worth the effort, considering the alternatives.
Once it fully runs down, plug in the charger, and it should power up / begin charging and you will know in two seconds if it worked cause that Asus Logo will be the greatest site you will have seen in some time.
Oh, and something you can try before beginning that long process: I know you have already tried most reset methods, but humor me and put a pin in the reset hole - by HDMI, but instead of just pressing it briefly, press and hold for a FULL 30 + seconds. Some swear this changes the parameters, thiugh I am doubrtfull. More significant was mention that while holding the microswitch in, there is a "draining" happening of the memory onboard. I half belive it because years ago, I had an old HP Jornada Pocket PC, and one of the recovery procedures was remove the backup battery, and wait some inutes for a drain of memory to occur. You could SEE the LCD fading, like losing contrast super slowly. When it went completely blank was whenI was instructed to re-power up.
So try the reset pinhole for 30+ seconds
failing that, try a full battery drain
failing that try to return to point of sale
failing that do a shudder RMA with Asus. (Reach out to Gary Key - his PM and Email are listed in these forums. That way at least you will have a point of contact, and he may provide you with others. Good luck I feel for ya, especially with JB almost upon us! :cyclops:

Nope nothing, doesn't matter if I press up/down + power for how long all I get is a 1 second vibrate after 10-12 seconds, with or without the Volume keys.
Pad is charged, same with A/C, when I try without the LED next to the power doesn't even turn on
Pressing the reset with a paperclip won't work either as stated so I guess it really is a brick...
How can a official Firmware Upgrade brick a device? I'm not new to Android and already own 3 HTC's all rooted and stuff but I never came across something like this ..

Your are not the only one, afaik other users bricked their devices just by updaing with official firmware. However i'm a bit confused about that "shutting down" message and iirc the device only does a "restart" when updating,it doesn't shutdown.
Hi!
Thanks for the long reply
I tried holding the reset for more than 30 seconds, as I thought it did not help.
Any Tipps on how to drain the battery if I can't even turn it on? It vibrates after 10 seconds but I don't think that will drain much of the battery..
As for the RMA:
I won't do it via ASUS, they told me to but hell no.
Bought it from Amazon and already contacted them, I'll send it back when I get the confirmation they won't do an ASUS RMA, if they do want I just get my money back and buy a new one lol. Either way it is faster than Asus..
/edit
I wondered about the shutdown too and even waited quite some time after it went black because I thought it would boot back again, but well.. it did not
Thanks again!

Put it in APX mode and it will drain your battery.Btw are you sure the battery was charged enough when you updated?

I will try to find the thread - but check in the Prime threads - search for screen black, no video etc. The guy(s) that did it said that they just kept turning it on.. or touching the power switch - I know that's not too detailed. Here's the thing: a vibrate is what the tablet does NORMALLY when powering up... I think your may be running, you just can't see it. The only clues you can get are from the LED in the power button. Green means something like 95% charged. Amber means less that 14% and blinking amber (with no power supply attached means it is within the last few percent - Those are ballpark figures, you can find the full LED color descriptions with a bit of searching. Anyway it is you only indicator so, finding out waht the colors mean might help you in the discharging process.

EDIT: JUST NOTICED you said this is from Amazon. If that's the case, you have no worries. Amazon replaces items faster/better than any other retailer. In fact Amazon will cross ship you a new one and you can return this after receiving the new one - at least that's how they did it with my TF101... two times. On the third exchange, they try to refund you and make you purchase it again, but I complained that it was not the SAME problem each time (this was on the docks) and they went ahead and sent me a 3rd one. Just go ahead and do that. You probably would be better off with a different one, but check it CAREFULLY for defects. I am convinced that these are near impossible for Asus to build without screwing up something - Screen separation (viewed from the edge), scratches, poor cutout/application of the Logo (My daughter actually bled from a cut it gave he -sharp edges) and the INFAMOUS Loose Screen, "Clicking" sound - squeeze the tablet gently all the way around. if it clicks or makes any grinding noises return it. For $500 any defect is unacceptable. Good luck!
Good idea. I also wondered about his state of charge while updating...

Thing is, even when it vibrates the LED is always off, only when I plug it in for charging it turns orange.
I will try the APX method Just plug it in to the PC and when the "can't find driver" message pops up it's in APX? Or do I have to install the drivers first?

You don't need the PC at all, just put it in APX mode and let it be. The led turns on only when you plug the charger.
Edit: btw, you will know if it's in APX mode because even if the screen is off the device will get warm.

Oh ok, since the only thing it does is vibrate I don't know if it is in APX Mode .. and it vibrates not after 5 seconds even when I press the volume up, but after ~10 seconds

Indeed it takes 10 seconds before it gets in APX mode.

Ok .. I think it is in APX now ... I need to head out for a few hours anyway so wish me luck!
And thanks for your help so far
Maybe that is why they pushed the release back. Because they found it was bricking devices, lol. That sucks, tho, man. Good thing you bought it recently enough to send it back with Amazon. I wouldn't even bother with anything else and just sent it back.
Maybe....you could see what's going on if you connected it to the TV/Monitor on the HDMI port....
Soo I'm back!
It is still vibrating, so the battery is not empty yet ;(
I thought about the HDMI too but I don't have a mini-HDMI adapter.
Anyway it is Saturday and I might send it back today ... although I am usually not giving up till I fix something I guess their might be nothing else left.
Thanks so much for your support so far

Ok another trick and it involves some luck. IF its on and you power it off you get a very, very short vibration (it's hard to feel it sometimes) and then you normally see a confirmation box appear in the middle of the screen asking you "Would you like to shut down?". Then you either tap Cancel or OK. Using your "minds eye" try to imagine where that box is on that black screen and tap it where you would to answer the question "OK". If you have any luck the damn thing will shut off and in ~8 seconds you'll feel a longer vibration indicating it turned off. Then DO NOT turn it on. Instead plug in the power adapter and let it power on and see if that puts your video back up.
I'm just wondering if the cable to the screen inside has popped off the main board. I know i've read about that happening but it usually occurs after a pretty good jolt to the unit.
I have a stock phone HTC One (M8) that has never been rooted. Today I pulled my phone out of my pocket and it wouldn't turn on. I've tried:
pressing the power button along with the volume up
Pressing power and volume down
Pressing power and volume up and down
I took it to the Verizon store and they said they would have to ship a refurb out to me. I wanted to check this forum to see if anyone has ideas before I get a refurb.
Thanks in advance!
Simular situation - will not power up or hold charge
Im S-off and unlocked .... I downloaded the new RUU 4.4.4 and everything was fine. the next day the battery drained completely and I plugged the charging cord in. I got the battery icon in the center of the screen and 0% life. The orange light is blinking, but the battery level doesn't change. I cannot get it to power up or get into the bootloader. Once I unplug the power cable the unit doesn't power on. if the keep the unit plugged In for a power source I'm still unable to boot. I'm totally out off ideas ... can I get someone to respond to help me out in this desperate time.

Can you try a different charger and cable? The blinking orange light is what they do when they are completely dead. Starts out blinking and wont go solid until enough charge is present to actually boot the phone.
I just upgraded to 4.4.4 as well maybe 3-4 days ago. I had been able to charge the phone a couple of times without issue right up until it wouldn't turn on yesterday.
I left the phone off the charger overnight and tried rebooting again this morning, and nothing.

Same here .. Been on the charging cord for a few days without any change in battery %.
Dodat ... Is there anyway to revive the M8 to accept the charge?

Try this:
Battery is fully charged, but the device does not turn on
Plug device into the provided HTC wall charger that came with the device.
Press and hold the Power, Volume up and Volume down keys for 1 - 2 full minutes. The battery should re-calibrate and the device will then turn on.
or
Battery shows less than 0% charge level
Plug device into the provided HTC wall charger that came with the device.
Charge the device until the LED indicator glows solid red.
Attempt to power the device on as usual. If it will not power on, press and hold the Power and Volume up keys for 10 seconds while still on the charger.
I tried this just now, nothing.
When I hook up the charger, I don't get any lights to indicate that the phone is charging.
It's like the phone is bricked, but I haven't messed with any ROMs at all. I'm completely stock and locked.

I am unlocked but am having the same problem. I've had the phone since almost launch day and it's been fine until now.....all of a sudden it won't charge. I've tried many different cables and chargers that I know work, but nothing gives.
Were you able to figure anything out? Really don't want to have to get a refurb as I don't think I'll be able to get it rooted/unlocked anymore.
edit: After letting it "charge" for about an hour I was able to turn the phone back on. It said the battery was at 30% but was draining like 2% every 15-20 seconds. Looking at the settings it said the battery state was unkown (where it usually says not charging or charging). Something is definitely doing on here, but I have no idea what. I tried rebooting to recovery from the ROM but it just shut off. Now it's doing the same thing again (0%, won't turn on). Ugh!
Well, title says it all. My girlfriend's Moto G just went totally dead one day. I took it apart and measured that the battery voltage was very low. I also tried to charge the phone but all that it did is blinking white LED if Power button is pressed.
So, i went to eBay and purchased a new battery which arrived today. Popped it into Moto G aaand.. still no life. Even the white LED did flash no more Tried almost every single trick that I have found, still no luck, however few hours of charging with my G3 charger bring the white LED back to life. Now if I press Power button for a few seconds, white LED flashes quickly 2 times and then it goes away and nothing on screen. If I just let it charge without touching anything, I can see white LED flashing sometimes. Gonna leave it charging overnight and see if that brings it back to life. Any tricks what else I can do with this phone or should I just toss it away?

Can you enter fastboot mode, if you can that might indicate a sign of life.
Can't enter fastboot either Tried to press Vol - and Power, white LED flashed only one time but still no luck :/ Maybe the mobo is bad?
What you have done to it
Just standard use, but one night it just died. It did not wake with overnight charging. It is now sitting on my desk without charger, gonna try it in the evening when i go home. If it does not wake, i think it really is dead
Try looking up the led codes from Motorola's site or something. That might help if there are any. Seems to me that you have some hardware damage. But I might be wrong.
Try keeping it on charger for a few hours, then with charger connected, press power and keep it pressed for like 2 straight minutes. That should at least wake the device. If it doesn't work, I'm afraid it is busted :/

Tried that too, even pressed Power button over 2 minutes but all it does is white LED flashing randomly. Without charger it does absolutely nothing. I think the motherboard is busted
Seems like hardware damage to me too, use it for parts or sell it I guess.
why don't you take it to service center
it will be your best bet if engineer have a look whats the issue. just a get a approx cost. they will let you know. :good:
