My son broke the power button on his 2013 One Mini and it only works intermittently now... is there a way to make the Volume keys wake up the device? If not, is there a ROM I can install that will provide an alternative method for waking the device?

Hi , yeah candyRom (http://forum.xda-developers.com/htc-one-mini/orig-development/rom-t2825888) has the option for volume to wake device, it also has the option to remap keys to do different things. check it out if ya want
Thank you very much. Will I be able to install the ROM without being able to use the power button to turn on the device? He now says it's not even intermittently working. Is there a way to turn it on with ADB or some other method if it wasn't already rooted?
can use adb and fastboot commands to reboot, reboot to recovery, reboot to bootloader but if phone powers down completely then i think your stuck. good luck!
If it's already stuck in powered off state, connect to pc and disconnect soon as you see charging notification, it should boot... Maybe!

Insertcoin supports volume key wake.
Thanks... not sure if I'm going to be able to install a custom ROM though since I can't turn it on and it wasn't already rooted. Will have to experiment with it.

And then just click OK

I know of a method to remap your Power key to one of the volume keys, and one of the volume keys to the Search key. However, this remapping only sticks when the phone is booted into ICS. AFAIK the remapping won't help you once you're in the bootloader and trying to access recovery. It also requires root, which you said you don't have...

Huh??I dont know....woke up from sleep...I cant use anymore..so sad..nexus s super fast phone
mine just crapped out too! what rom/kernel were you using? I recently installed pixie's and glados. The weird thing is that I can turn on the phone using the power button, but once on the power button does nothing.

use all wake apps from market to wake your phone using volume button..
to turn off your phone use screen off from market..

seems like my button just died completely. I was using stock for a while and the power button was acting up. Then I rooted and went with pixie, and this solved the power button issue. Then just yesterday it acted up again and today it was really erratic. and now it's pretty much dead. if you google "nexus s power button" you will see many people affected by this in the past few days.
i have the same problem, my power button is broken also cant bring it to the repair centre because i imported my phone. But as long as you already have clockwork recovery working properly, you can do pretty much anything: installing custom roms etc etc, in normal usage i use the app "fix broken power button" and that works flawleslly even on ICS.
and if you havent got clockwork recovery, i think there was a way to install it via adb fastboot, not sure how though....
Any idea how to root without power button??

I too have a broken power button, and for me fastboot does not even work!
I have found a solution a made a script that all you need to do is launch with your PC! (credits to saurik for the exploit)

All you need to do, is run the script! Then, plug-in your phone (needs to be on with USD ADB DEBUG ON) and done!

This will root your phone, and then you can afterwards flash ClockworkMod from the market and then reboot into recovery =)
A work of advice though, make sure to install CyanogenMod7 which has an option to unlock with volume button!

Alright, I currently have a HTC Aria running CM9, I was going to purchase an HTC One X from AT&T. However, I have one question. If I root it, and the device begins to bootloop or hangs for any reason, how will I stop it? I wouldn't be able to remove the battery....

also you can push power button for 10 seconds or more, with a bit of luck phone will turn off.
But after that you still need volume button ...
I understand now, I didn't realize that there was a kill switch and that after holding the power button down for 10 seconds, the device turns off.
I recently flashed a Paranoid ROM (nightly build v1.991, Aug 21) downloaded using GooManager.
All worked fine initially, until recently the power button stopped responding/working.
I tried rebooting the phone by taking the battery out (I did not have to press power button, since it auto-starts), but it did not help.
I could enter the fastboot mode while rebooting by pressing Power button + Volume up button.
However in fastboot mode, the volume rockers (which work everywhere else, eg: recovery) along with power button, were not responding , also "fastboot devices" command did not recognize any device.
Now, to re-flash the Paranoid ROM or a stable ROM, I needed the power button in CW Recovery.
So I was left with a single option of flashing the Touch-CW recovery without fastboot mode.
I managed to do that using Terminal app (the one that opens the shell from the underlying kernel) from the ROM itself.
Now I could flash ROM using the Touch-CW recovery.
I tried re-flashing the Paranoid ROM, flashing a stable CM ROM but none helped.
Latter, I tried various drivers (PDAnet, Samsung, raw adb drivers from Android SDK) and toolkits to get the fastboot mode working but to no avail.
Note: The "adb" commands work correctly when the Nexus S is connected in USB debugging mode.
But no matter what the fastboot mode and the power button do not work!
Please help!

Nexus S has been bricked, I suppose!
It now does not start and gives no response to pressing of any combination of the keys(hard and soft).

That's normal, because your power button is broken, that has nothing to do with the ROM. If you take a moment and search the web you'll see it's a very common problem for Nexus S.
Send your phone for repair if it's under warranty or if you're ready to afford the repair from Samsung. Otherwise you can fix it yourself if you have experience with small electronics, although I would advise against it.

Also, any thoughts about the buttons not working in fastboot mode?

Again, known problem. With a quick search you're able to find answers to these questions.
Whenever the power button breaks, often enough it will stay stuck as pressed in thus activated. Fastboot can only react to one button press at a time thus will act as if the power button was being held. The volume rocker will not be able to work as long as the power button is "held". And since it's broke, it's continually held, so you can't scroll.
You can technically and in practice live with the power button not working. Many people manage to do so.
-From within Android, you can reboot to recovery using either an app or an embedded menu in many custom roms. Using a touch recovery such as CWM 6.0.1.0 or 5.8.0.2 you can use it without any problem.
-To wake up your phone from sleep you can use volume rocker wake embedded in some custom roms.
-To put it to sleep you can use shortcut apps/widgets, a notification bar shortcut, let the timeout do it's work or use a proximity/light sensor app.

Does it work properly EVERY time (and I mean that) while in Android?
Fastboot and recovery are different beasts though. I've not heard of problems in recovery when the power button was stuck, unlike fastboot.
It's possible your power button hasn't failed you completely yet. They tend to be flaky at first then one day just out right stop working. Sims22 on these boards has one that works if he smacks his phone a bit, to give you an example.

I want to Odin. Since I restores everything completely to stock. How ever I cannot get into download mode at all. Tried adb. Different apps. And hold volume up/down while plugging USB

I also tried ODIN and Nexus Root Toolkit. But was locked in fast boot mode. Then I pulled off the battery to reboot, and that was the last time the Nexus worked.
I recently opened up the nexus to verify that the power button is functional, it is working correctly.
I guess time for the Samsung service center guys to work on it.

Hi,
My Oneplus One boots only to the CWM recovery. I noticed that my volume down button not working. So I restarted the phone, and now it only boots to CWM only.
In the recovery, the volume down button still doesn't work. It looks like the button may be stuck? and my guess is it's initiating the volume button down + power button to boot to CWM.
But I also tested the Button Test function in CWM, and the down button doesn't even register.
Is there any way to bypass this? I don't need the volume button down to work necessarily, but I need my phone to work.
I'd appreciate if there's any other way to bypass this, or maybe modify CWM file to change the recovery button combo.
If the button is stuck, then no amount of altering CWM is going to help because you'll never be able to boot into the OS with a stuck volume button. You're going to need to physically inspect and fix that volume button. In the meantime in order to have a functional recovery, ditch CWM and flash TWRP, the UI is all touchscreen so no replying on buttons, and it's leaps and bounds better than CWM anyway.

I noticed a few more things, which makes me to believe that this is not a physical button problem.
First, whenever I charge the device, the device won't stay OFF. It constantly turns on automatically.
However, if I don't charge, the device will stay OFF.
Second, I can't even go to Bootloader. I tried "adb reboot bootloader" from the command prompt and the phone boots directly to CWM recovery.
Third, if the volume down button is stuck, wouldn't it be activated all the times? So when I'm in CWM, it'll constantly go down, and when I test on Button Test, it should register constantly.
But that's not happening. It's simply dead.
I'm going to try the RMA process, but meanwhile, I would be glad if someone has better idea with the new info I provided here.

Hi, My Moto G has some problem with the power button, I need to press many times to it wake up, if I press one time again it goes to sleep, so it isn't a problem in hardware.
Must be something with the software wake up?
His recovery was not working too, but I flashed again with fastboot and this was resolved.
Somebody know what could be?

Flash another rom, if it still there enable volume wake option and use volume key for wake up from sleep. You need a custom rom or gravity box in stock rom.
