So I have watched lots of tutorial videos, used toolkits, etc. but I am unable to root my OPO!
I have unlocked the bootloader and flashed TWRP.
I have flashed SuperSU from TWRP 5-6 times, it says it is flashed successfully, but when I reboot, I don't have root.
I have also tried downloading a pre-rooted stock rom and flashed it but it had the same result!
Any ideas anyone? Btw I am on the latest stock rom (30O)

Here is the best root thread here. have you tried flashing Calks pre-rooted rom. Once you flash this there is no need to flash supersu. Give it a try

did you try and download supersu from the play store and install it that way. also what did you to test the fact that you have no root

I have tested whether I have root with various apps. Also I cannot remove SuperSU so I tried installing Superuser app from play store but still the same..

go into developer options and check under root access and see what it says

Try a custom ROM, do the following
1. Download your ROM, Gapps (if needed), custom kernel (if you want), supersu http://download.chainfire.eu/supersu
2. Put it on your phone
3. Boot into TWRP
4. Factory reset
5. Flash ROM, Gapps, custom kernel, supersu
6. Reboot
... and you should have root.

I read that, I was suggesting try another flashing custom ROM. I know Mahdi ROM has SuperSU built in but just incase never hurts to flash it.

Ok, it does not hurt to try them all if need be. Just the way your post read I am sure he would of said he tried a custom rom but trying more than 1 is something I hope he at least did prior to posting.
OP how many roms have you tried?
Also when your phone boots up, give it a good 1-2 minute before you check if you have root.
Download the SuperSU from the link I provided in the previous post.
Use https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.joeykrim.rootcheck to check. A pop up will appear asking if you want to grant or deny access, grant it.
ok so I found the solution to my problem after flashing supersu using all available recoveries several times!
I unchecked the option "Respect CM root settings" in the SuperSU app and it worked!
btw I can't find a root access setting in the Developers Options. can you guys see it?!

Depending what ROM you're using, its missing built-in Superuser. Just use SuperSU

just got my nexus, use cf auto root to root it, then i downloaded rom manager and it flashed clockwork mod. then i tried to download a rom and gapps and install it via rom manager, the rom loaded up with problems, i did not have data or any way to get to my settings so i nandroid back, i try and flash a custom recovery other than cwm and nothing will flash, i get an error saying cant find nexus 5 recovery img or something like that, i cant get my computer to read this phone only in camera mode i need help figuring this out please
1 - stop using rom manager completely.
2 - you should use fastboot to flash recovery. Read the rooting guide in general to learn it.

Please don't use rom manager or any other thirdparty tools to flash rom just use fastboot method the recommended way for flashing rom..

Chainfire causes issues, there are quite a few threads with troubles about CF.
Don't use GOO to install TWRP either.
Just updated my Nexus 5 using the OTA thread that went through fine,
I then proceeded to update SuperSU using the following link: http://download.chainfire.eu/supersu which was the update v1.99r3.
Using TWRP I flashed this and root is working for most apps i have tested: titanium, adblock, root explorer. So root is back.
However whenever I load up SuperSU I keep getting the following message: "The SU binary needs to be updated. Continue?"
So of course I have done this and let it use TWRP to flash. Let the phone boot up and upgrade the app as it needed. However on next load up of the app it asks to do the same yet again.
I feel as though I'm forgetting something as it's been a while since I've done this. ( use to live on flashing when i had my SII)
My Nexus is Stock ROM. CF-Auto Rooted. TWRP Recovery. Nothing else is modified.
Help would be appreciated, even though I don't go into supersu all that often anyways.

That message is usually indicative of not having root in the first place. What if you flash it via TWRP then do it normally? Could TWRP be removing it with its "Fix root" option?
What about other recoveries? Do they allow root to stay?

How odd like I said my apps are all receiving their root permissions...
What file would we be talking about flashing? The Temp one SuperSU makes to flash when you click install via TWPR?
I don't have any other recoveries on my phone, so I wouldn't know about that last option.

Are they though? SuperSU grants permissions but if the binary is not present, its irrelevant. Can you actually do root things with the root apps that have the permissions?
Have you tried other binary download?

Theres a link in my signature to Philz recovery. In the settings is a root option, so the recovery itself can root without flashing any zips. Maybe try that if downloading an older flashable zip or the above hasnt worked.

It does seem that way Titanium has backed up an app just now, adblock has updated and Nova is hiding the time on the first screen.

Well considering that worked and I now can get into SuperSU I think I will stick with Philz. Even if I paid for the TWRP app

Good news. The latest version of Philz, s it is CWM based - uses the latest Cyanogen sources to build. I update the CM sources everytime I build Philz so hopefully there should be fewer issues when new stuff comes out.

Normally busybox is free on the playstore. Not sure how to explain but it adds the possibility to do some commands, in this case TWRP Manager.
But I read posts from 2 people that they had issues with installing CM11s from scratch so I would wait to see if it is ok to do so or wait for an update.
2.7.1.1 works do there is no rush to update.
The Busybox installer by stericson is from what I gather not dangerous and is useful for many apps, such as the TWRP Manager. But if you are unsure, I believe the app Flashify does not require Busybox to be installed (don't quote me on that), and it can be used to flash the new TWRP 2.8 image file. Search for Flashify in the Google Play store and install it. Then select "recovery image" and select the TWRP .img file. That worked for me when I tried yesterday, but I can't give you any guarantees.

Do not use 2.8, it has issues with flashing kernels. It can cause bootloops. Just stick with 2.7.1.1, it's rock solid.

I used 2.8 and flashed a ROM and flashed multiple kernels without any problems.

For now i don't need to change nothing from STOCK ROM... i have already unlock the bootloader some month ago.. i have root permission and i have a good feedback whit the stock CM11S............
Otherwise if i have some problems i thinks i can re-download and i can reflash the 2.7.1.1 over this 2.8.0.0 whitout any problems rights ?

You can gain root following, This thread. If you already have a custom recovery install, might be easier to install the pre-rooted 05QA. I went the second route.
P.S. That toolkit will root 05QA, just does not have the new firmware to go back to stock.

If you have custom recovery installed. Do a back up first. You should not have to wipe or lose anything.

You said that flashing entire ROM would be easier, it isn't. All that's need to get root is to flash the SuperSU zip. He's already on 05Q so flashing the ROM zip is completely and utterly pointless. It's like telling someone who's run out of petrol to install a entirely new petrol tank that's full of petrol (when all that's actually needed is the fuel).
It doesn't matter what someone thinks might be the solution, if you're going to answer in the q&a section you need to give the best and easiest solution.
The thing is flashing update-supersu is not working... for me at least. I updated OTA.. After installation finished, rebooted to TWRP and tried to install update-supersuv2.37.zip...
It doesn't show any error, but when I reboot my phone there is no supersu installed ( actually there is one but it's greyed out with android icon and not showing up on application list )

Sorry guys for don´t answer your comments, I have been working out of my country for a couple of weeks.
I get root on 05Q with just flashing SuperSU 2.46 from recovery. Easy and fast, just that.
Anyway you have my thanks in your respective buttons.

I keep reading posts that tell me to flash Magisk using custom recovery but my phone says 'update from external storage is disabled' so that's a no go.. And I can't use Odin because it's a ZIP file, not MD5, .TAR, SMD. etc. What else can I do? I've only ever managed to root my phone once and that was using CF AUTO Root which can be flashed by Odin.

Please tell us the specific phone model and rom. Magisk need to be flashed (installed) using a custom recovery e.g. TWRP. TWRP can be flashed using Odin even if the device isn't actually rooted.

My phone model is Samsung S5 Neo and I'm running 5.1 custom ROM. So, what you're saying is, I can flash TWRP using Odin and that will become my default recovery when I press home, volume up and the power button?

TWRP will replace the stock recovery. How did you manage to install a custom rom without a custom recovery?

I managed to find a file with the file type .MD5 and used Odin, plugged my phone in and downloaded with no problem.

That must be a modified stock rom. TWRP will allow you to install any kind of rom without any restrictions.

Sweet! Thanks for the insight. This is what happens when you're a total noob. I find all this rooting and custom ROM larky confusing. I always stumble into issues along the way. So, install TWRP on my laptop and that will have the correct file type to be flashed by Odin, and then use TWRP to flash Magisk.. anything else or will I have any other problems? Don't want to clumsily stumble into a landmine.

What the exact phone model? SM-xxxx
You can download TWRP as .tar.md5 and flash it using Odin.
Best case is to install Magisk on a fresh installation without root/exposed framework already installed.

Why would you suggest that? In case I reach a point where apps are no longer compatible with my outdated software? Thanks, I might do that. I have stuck with 5.1 simply because I'm preferring it and also Marshmallow have made it harder to bypass security and root the device. I'm thinking it might not be safe now that I know this is a modded ROM, so I should probably look for an official one.
Can I make a Nandroid backup with TWRP? That sounds like it could be useful for any hiccups.

Marshmallow is already fully supported and you will be able to get full control to anything you like. Usually you can trust roms you get at the XDA forum as its a pretty active community and harmfull users would be banned real quickly. The only point is that modded stock rom or custom roms like LineageOS and derivates may not be stable and cause functionality issues.
So I've used this forum to find TWRP for my device https://forum.xda-developers.com/ga...official-experimental-twrp-galaxy-s5-t3293379, I'm not sure how to 'Run flash-recovery.sh' because, as I mentioned, it won't let me flash from my SD card.. Any help would be appreciated!
UPDATE: Managed to get TWRP as my custom recovery. Thanks so much for your help! I genuinely had no idea you could flash TWRP onto your phone! I was using the app which is hopeless. Most forums I've found say 'boot in recovery' which is quite unclear if you're not familiar with that..
Can I flash Nougat update onto my S5 Neo? It's originally not supported, that's the only reason I'm asking..
Can I still root with Magisk on that operating system as well and restore from Nandroid backup?
