[Q] Need Help With ROM..

I have a HTC HERO with a 2.1 update and i would like to take the stock UI off of my phone and save it on my computer for safe keeping.. How would i get the rom off of my phone.

Root your phone and do a nandroid right after rooting it. Then take the nandroid folder from your sdcard and save it to your computer. There are other ways but they all require rooting your phone

thats what it says and i have my computer with a sd card in it and it is rooted but still nothing on nandroid.. ( in recovery )

Do you have an sdcard in your phone? You can't do a back up to your PC. What you can do is pull your system folder to your PC and create an update zip and sign it so you can flash it later.

yes i have a sd card in my phone. i don't know how to do anything else that you was talking about like signing it and the folder.. bc their is no folder in my sdcard with nandroid label on it.

Not to be mean but you have been on the forums since NOV 2008. You should know the rules by now. This belongs in the Q&A section not here.
I would say and this sounds very stupid tho...format your memory card(of course save everything) then do the Nandroid..sometimes they are picky.
And if you give me a lil bit i will post a link on how to sign and such..i need to get it off my laptop at home. what the guy is talking about is getting a root explorer(like android mate) then going and copying the /system/ onto your Sd card...thats essentially your rom right there anyways. Like i said tho gimme a bit and i will get ya in the direction.

Do just a plain nandroid backup. Not the one with -ext.

Desire New MicroSD card

I am using Android phone for first time, It's a HTC Desire (unrooted), I have a 4GB memory card installed in it with lots of apps and stuff on SD card. Now I want to root my device and bought a new 16GB card. I want to transfer all my data from this 4 GB card to new one, and also want to partition it for rooting. what is the easiest way to do transfer all my data / sms / contacts / everything else to my new card. and my contacts are mess, they were saved on phone not syncd with gmail. I saved them as cvs file and uploaded them on gmail but now every contact is double. alot of crap going on in my phone. anyways want to fix all of it and install my new card and root my device with lee droid rom. can anyone help ?
Guys Sorry if this question have been asked before, I tried to search but couldn't find the answer.

First root your device and install titanium backup and backup all your apps and data. After this copy all the contents of your card onto hard drive. ( take special care that you get the folder named TitaniumBackup, it has all your app and data for restoring)
Then partition your card according to your requirements by any of the methods recommended( i used amon ra recovery) and flash your rom and setup your accounts and all. After all this you can just copy back the contents from your old card onto new one and install titanium backup and restore all your apps and data with it.
As for the doubles in your contacts. log into google contacts and it lets you remove 'doubles' pretty easy.

I have been told I need to do a "Factory Data Reset" to a) clear out phantom crap-data from my built-in storage (now at 4% free space), and b) stop my phone from random double SMS posts.
I see several Market options for backup but none look very appealing nor do they guarantee to backup everything. Several require your phone to be rooted (mine isn't). Free apps don't backup everything and paid apps only back up the the SD Card but mine is nearly full.
Some on this forum say they can do it all by hand but I have no idea how.
Can't I just plug it into my laptop and move the files over?
This is my first Android phone and I would like to eventually ROOT the phone but I am not there yet. Perhaps this is the next step towards being comfortable doing that.

And that app only saves to the SD card. Mine is FULL

Where do you want to save it to? anywhere but the sdcard will be wiped in any sort of flashing, making it a useless backup. the only logical place to backup your data is your sdcard, and then copying that backup to your computer.

How do I safely move stuff off the SD Card to make more room for the backup?How much room will the backup take? Does the backup only backup the Phone storage or also the SD Storage? (FYI, I have Astro File Manager)

Backing up the sdcard would be an oxymoron, as trying to backup your sdcard to your sdcard would never work, that would be like trying to make 1 + something try to be less than 1. You can plug your phone in as a Mass Storage Device, which will use your phone essentially as a flash drive, and you can add or delete as you please. If you're worried about deleting something, copy it to your computer rather than deleting it outright. Backing up should take about 500 MB if you're using Nandroid, but you're not rooted, and I'm not familiar with the posted backup. Backing up without rooting is very difficult

Yeah that is why I am posting. many of us non-root-ers want to be able to do this, and also, aren't you supposed to backup your system BEFORE you attempt to ROOT? How does everyone else do it??
OK So I Sideload everything from the SD Card to the laptop, then delete everything from the SD Card, then backup the phone storage stuff to the SD Card, then move THAT File/folder to the laptop.
Is that right??

Rooting is non-invasive, I've never backed up before rooting. Rooting just edits permissions on one file, which no non-rooted backup app can backup anyways.
If you wanted to backup that way, then yes, that would work, but if you're looking to backup before you root, I would say don't even bother, as it will not backup the phone system anyways, as no non-rooted app can do that.

If rooting is so "non-invasive" then why do you read so many warnings that if you don't do it **JUST RIGHT** you can totally BRICK your phone??

Rooting can't brick your phone, flashing kernels and bootloaders can. The actual phone files, the operating system files, cannot be backed up by a non-rooted phone, as they are privileged. Rooting only installs the SuperUser.apk to manage super user rights, as well as changing the privileges on the system's super user binary so that you as a user can use it. all that to say, it's not a big deal to root, but what you do once you get root is what can cause issues. And if you brick yourself, no backup is going to help you, as by definition, bricking is beyond repair.

Full Android backup to PC possible?

Hello I wonder if making a full phone backup to PC's hard drive would be possible...I mean something similar to Acronis trueimage of Windows partition...but do this on phone with exclusion of the main firmware. Because of no SDcard slot I need store everything to connected PC HDD...
Looked at TitaniumBackup which probably is close to what I need but I'm afraid it lacks support for storing to networked location. Any working solution is highly appreciated

Take backup using Cwm and u can reflash it using ir phone again.

You need to root (gain root/superuser access) your device and install a custom recovery. Clockwork Mod is one of the (CWM), TWRP is another (having used both, I prefer TWRP - but you can try either/both yourself). You can then copy or cut the backed-up files from the recovery's folder to your computer.

Thanks, probably give it a try if anything else fails. Would it be possible to mount a windows shared drive to phone's internal filesystem? So that TB could access it as internal folder...

Thanks for the advices. I finally managed to install CWM
CWM's backup = Nandroid?
This works for SDcard, however the condition to backup directly to my PC's hard drive is not met
Remember I suffer with lack of space on builtin SDcard so I need to exclude it from backup process at all even as temporary location.
One more question about CWM, where can I find the latest version? I have 6.0.1.2.

Yeah, you need to be able to access files in the phone not on sd card, the phone has a seperate memory he wants to access, I think he is asking how to put the phone (everything) onto PC.... im not sure how to do this myself but I will look into it for you, I believe you can access that info but im not sure where the files you want are.

The backup is saved into /sdcard/clockworkmod/blob/ but the problem I have with it is that used soace in internal memory is over 1.5GB while free space on Sdcard is usually several 100s MB...

SP Flash Tool Flashable Backup

Hei guys, I own a Chinese handphone. Tweaked it so much, soft bricked it numerous times, but I got the stock rom at my disposal anyway so it doesn't matter much. It's cheap so I can actually do some experiments or tested non Play Store, or even suspicious apps on it.
However, going back and forth to stock then reconfigure everything is rather tedious task to do.
I did installed a CWM recovery and did a full nandroid backup. But it's seem that CWM backup didn't overwrite the old one so when I do a second one it failed, saying I'm out of space? I still got about 2 GB on internal storage, and 8 GB on external storage. It's said my folder (I forgot which, it's /data if I'm not mistaken) don't have space left. This is one funny thing about my phone, it doesn't use the internal storage at all. I cannot move the apps to the internal storage as well, only to the external SD card.
I'm out of space probably also because I move so many app as system. This way when I do a factory reset I got all my updated apps within, without the need to reinstall it.
So, the questions :
Is there any way to make CWM to actually update a backup, instead of creating a new one? Which partition I should wipe from CWM if I want to create an updated backup? It is convenient to do the restore directly from CWM, but I cannot update the backup, with that space problem.
How about creating a full custom ROM flashable image of my phone on which I can save to my PC instead?
How about going on fetching the nandroid backup CWM generated? Is it flashable using SP Tool? But I can't find the files anywhere in my system.
Any help would be appreciated.

I'll update this thread when I've worked it out.

I'm an idiot. I can actually save the CWM backup into the internal SD. It's visible on any file manager within the folder "clockworkmod".
Sorry I did have experience with CWM, but never use it for backup, only to flash patches.
