I got a G3 two days ago and I keep reading reviews to see what I don't know about my device yet. It's quite feature packed, after all. One thing I saw in a review was mention of "smart bulletin," which I don't have on my phone or in the Home Screen page of the settings menu. There is also no brightness slider in the notification shade.
Aside from all the AT&T bloatware, are there any other important differences between our G3 and, say, the international version? I'm just wondering if, in the future, I'm going to want to root and put on a non-AT&T based ROM to get the full experience.
Oh, and while I'm at it, the AT&T version didn't come with headphones. If you were on a budget (like I am) and you wanted a "matching" set of headphones for your phone (like I do), what would you get? Preferably something with a button I can use to pause/skip the music I'm listening to when need be.

as far as headphones I don't use them very often either so can't help you there unfortunately.
the bootloader is locked so really your only options are root and xposed framework, so you can tweak that way until either LG provides a way to unlock the boot loader or a workaround can be found a la safestrap or equivalent.
None of the US versions come with headphones it seems. I had lots of pairs laying around, so I haven't needed to buy a pair specifically for the G3.
As already noted, the biggest difference between the AT&T version and all the other versions is that Qi wireless charging will NOT work on the AT&T version. This means that if you want to have wireless charging, you must buy the official AT&T Powermat Circle case which has a Powermat charging coil in it. None of the other wireless charging cases will work because they all have Qi charging coils. Don't get fooled even if the seller claims their Qi case works with the AT&T variant (LG-D850). Most sellers don't actually know that the AT&T version is different.

the smart bulletin is actually a drop down menu that's in the stock clock widget that comes with the phone, its kinda neat but i changed it cause i don't need the info that it displays.

Actually, no that is called Smart Notice. But on non AT&T phones it does integrate with Smart Bulletin. The AT&T version does have the option of displaying the LG Health part of it, but for some reason, not the tips. So, you get half of Smart Bulletin? Smart Bulletin is pretty much what I said it was for non AT&T phones. See this video for reference.

Having taken my AT&T One X back, I have been considering the advantages of the International version and this is what I came up with:
More frequent updates
Free wireless tether out of the box
No bloatware or branding
Unlocked Bootloader
Twice the storage
Am I missing anything? Even though most of the bloatware can be disabled, there is still some that you can't, which eats into the RAM.
I have LTE in my area and it's fast, but my current phone doesn't have it and I can definitely live without it. Given that they are the same price off contract, I'm starting to think that the International version is a better bet.
I'm aware that performance and battery life are better on the S4, but other than benchmarks, I'm not sure the performance angle will mean much. Better battery life interests me, but timely updates from HTC may narrow that gap on the International version.
Positives
- While Adreno's no slouch, you could argue GeForce is better for gaming and you'd also have access to the Tergra Zone.
- Multitasking's been improved (too early to say it’s “good”) but it may be on the U.S. version too with updates.
- You get to select what app to open e-mail, pics, videos, web links, etc. with on the fly which has been removed in the U.S. version. Flashing custom ROMs would fix that though.
- You get back whatever stock HTC apps AT&T ordered removed. Someone who owns both phones could probably tell what they are and whether they're worth anything.
- The radio (for me) has been the best I've ever had on a phone. That includes celllular, Wi-FI, and BT. It picks up cell signals better than the i9100 did, moves between Wi-Fi and cellular cleanly, and BT auto connects to all my devices three times as fast and more reliably than the i9100. It's not fair to judge the U.S. version in its current state as it's obviously experiencing some bugs which will likely be worked out.
- You get a two vs. one year warranty.
- You get to use this which I think is pretty cool. I have a couple on order so it'll be kept charging when I'm not using it. It's supposedly "Bose-like" in its sound reproduction and charges the phone using the pogo pins. It connects via BT using Apt.X for lossless sound. They may make one for the U.S. version but for now the pogo pins are in the wrong place.
Negatives
- Battery life isn't as good as the U.S. version. You should get 12-14 hours but anything over that is pushing it. You'll also have a stroke until you rack up a few charge cycles because out-of-the-box it's pretty scary.
- Certain apps think you're in the UK. I have to use an old hacked version of Amazon MP3 to get cloud access.
- There's some debate about warranty support. The phone may have to be shipped to the UK if it needs repair. That's HTC's policy (Samsung's is the same) but some people have gotten repairs done in the U.S. It seems pretty random.
- HTC instituted a new warranty policy regarding third party ROMs with the One's. If you unlock the bootloader using HTCdev and they detect a third party ROM was used your h/w warranty is void. Since the bootloader's not unlocked on the U.S. version yet it's too soon to say if the same policy will be applied here.
- You have to buy SquareTrade for ADH since it's not available from AT&T. That also takes care of any issues with HTC not covering the warranty on ROM'd devices. It's transferable so you'll get more for the phone when you're ready to sell it.

Thanks, Barry. You're a stud, as usual. That actually sounds pretty good. I don't bother with warranties. As long as the place I order from has a decent return policy (in the event it's a lemon), I'm good.
I am a little worried about battery life. All of the reviews made the S4 version sound so good. Battery tests I have seen are all over the place. Seems that the tegra version has longer call time and the S4 has longer web browsing.
I also noticed a thread in the International forum dedicated to complaining about Multitasking, so I wonder if it is still an issue.
Radio is that good, huh? Are you on AT&T? Did you have to set up a specific HSPA+ APN to get full speed? I had to do that on my Nexus.

It should get you through the day easily syncing, doing productivity stuff, streaming audio, and browsing. Game play and videos will require a top-up.

They're neurotic. A handful of them bricked their phones screwing around trying to recover what they thought was lost space on the SD partition; even though none of them seemed to actually need the space. HTC's running virtual drives so the phone shows up as "disk storage" vs. using MTP. They racked up 100 pages discussing it. In Astro, I could see it calculating actual files stored correctly but reporting available space differently because an HTC apps was holding space. The space was there if needed because the HTC app would have reduced the cache it was retaining. So it was a reporting error not an actual loss of space. It also would have been the same on the U.S. version and I think with half the storage at least one person would have stumbled upon it. Moral of the story: trust nothing on the international forum.

I had the i9100 for eleven months and never got MMS working 100% of the time. With the One X, I popped the SIM in and it read the APNs without me having to do a thing. Keep in mind AT&T's a mess though. F-ups are usually due to the SIM, APNs, and/or plan provisioned on your account not lining up. So it's always a YMMV based on the plan linked to your account.

You also have the Nexus. How does battery life compare to your Nexus? Mine has been stellar. If it's anything like the Nexus (or better), I'll be fine.
As for multitasking: It's not really like that. I fast switch between apps all the time, but I don't have a particular usage scenario. To me, ICS is made for multitasking, thus the dedicated button, so nerfing it seems ridiculous.
Mostly, I see myself multitasking between my bank app and calculator or a web page (which I already know refreshes) and e-mail. Sometimes, I multitask between the gallery and messaging, if I'm looking for a pic to send or a particular image. Maps and e-mail (if someone gives you directions or sends you an address).
Honestly, I tend to open apps from the tray most of the time, but I sometimes use the multitasking button to go back to one I used recently. Even on the nexus, those will die after a while.
My one other true, main concern is push e-mail. Someone in the AT&T forum reported that it was just the AT&T versions having that issue. I really need to believe that because if I get the International version and it's still a problem, I'll be sad. I suppose I could wait for an update, but it's that critical to me. My job depends on timely responses to e-mail.
As many of you know, the AT&T LG G3 is not like the rest of the G3's when it comes to wireless charging. The AT&T unit uses the PMA standard and not the QI type chargers.
Unfortunately after spending a few hundred dollars on wireless chargers and 2 Quick circle cases, I have discovered that the charging unit on the phone is defective.
I purchased 3 Duracell Power-mat chargers along with 2 quick circle cases.
First LG G3 with Circle case charged fine for the first day then failed. I guessed it might have been the case so I purchased new case and tried the new case on a new Power-mat - The phone did not charge. No charging light, no charging animation
I exchanged my LG G3 at best buy and tested the wireless charging in store - and the existing cases and the new LG G3 charged just fine.
After 24 hours the phone stopped charging... I tested my iPhone 4 and the battery packs and on the Power-mat and both charged fine.
Once again I exchanged the phone and used the new Circle case to charge - this time the wireless charging worked for a couple days and again this morning it stopped working.
I went back to best buy and was able to confirm that the circle case and the power-mats are all working and its the actual phone that has stopped working for the third time. 3 phones out of 3 phones have failed after no more than 48 hours using wireless charging - I have also noticed that others in the non-branded LG forum are having the same issues with the PMA charging.
I contacted LG and the lady wants me to send in my phone and be left with out a phone for a couple weeks so that they can repair it and see if there is anything wrong with it.
Please chime in if you are having the same issue.

I gave ya thanks also. I talked to Customer Service yesterday at AT&T and I have to now bring my phone to a repair shop to Tuesday due to the Holiday. I talked to the repair center and they said that basically that I will have to be sent a new phone, because although the person I talked to believed me she said she would have to call att to get me a new phone sent because they don't stock the LG G3 obviously. It sucks that I am gonna have to flash my phone back to stock and what not. Obviously there is a major problem with the phone and Powermat charging. I hope LG figures it out and its just a hardware fix. Maybe something is tripping software wise and blocking it from charging. I would almost bet its software because it seems like it wants to connect when you first place it on the mat it makes a sound then disconnects. AT&T put something in the software and the hardware of the phone to block QI charging so I guess they didn't do enough testing with the software to block the QI on the ATT phone. I think it's ridiculous to force someone to use Powermat and not give you the option to choose because ATT is part of the powermat alliance or whatever the crap the group is called. The only way powermat will take off is if the i-sheep include it as a feature in the Iphone 6. It is rumored that NFC may be on the Horizon for the new Iphone and you can bet your ass if they add wireless charging it will be that powermat crap. The only good thing is we will see accessories out the azz for powermat if iphone got wireless charging.

I was on the phone with ATT for an hour to get a replacement. They said since the phone charges correctly with the cord it wasn't anything wrong with the phone. I had to speak to a supervisor as well as an LG rep to tell ATT it was a hardware issue and that it was covered under warranty just to get a refurbish phone sent to me. Looking at this I want to send back the referb and keep my original phone knowing its bound to happen again. Maan this sucks. I like my wireless charging.
I picked up the LG Quick view case and powermat charger from Att store 2 weeks ago. No issues at all except I noticed my battery life was cut in half. Not sure why but I quit using them both and battery is back what it was. Both are going on Ebay.
Well the day i click the link on to read this forum is the day my wireless charging stopped, this must be a software issue cause how can it just stop right out of the blue, I'm blaming this thread for stopping my wireless charging when i read it lol, seriously there must be a way to get it to work. Is it confirmed that it is the phone and not the case? I was wirelessly charging for about a month.

On another note I guess 2moro I will get another phone ordered, heck maybe I should wait because I would hate to keep blowing thru phones if it ends up being a software issue.
can you try a factory reset? I have a feeling this issue is like so many other little quirks of the phone (things that just stop working all of a sudden) and it's a software issue (like the Aux cable issues)

I was gonna do that b4 calling ATT back. I have read that it didn't help in another thread. I am rooted so I have got to flash back to stock anyways. I bought a new router and tried flashing dd wrt on it so it's got My phone flashing behind today already. I will report back after I get it flashed back to factory settings though.

I had the same exact issue. Worked fine for a month and then all of a sudden one day stopped working for no apparent reason. I tried factory resetting and this did not work. Had to fight with AT&T to replace the phone as they just don't get it. Finally was replaced and works fine again. Let's see how long it lasts this time...

Apparently there is some competent people that work there. I actually got someone that knew about the issue. He remoted into my phone and looked for a reading and said yep I see there is an error with your wireless charging. I played stupid and am glad I flashed back to factory.
oh ya by the way going back to stock no root did not fix anything lol. Anyways the rep got me a new phone shipped out no hassle or problems at all.
He actually told me that they knew what was wrong and said that it isn't going to affect many people because a lot of people are not going to wireless charge if there is any truth to that, but that an update would not be pushed out for awhile for the fix. He said the new phone that they are sending me will not stop charging. Anyways we will see how that goes.

And how did they remotely connect to it and check if the wireless charging works or if it shows and error cause that would actually help to pinpoint if its hardware or software, from the looks of it its faulty software that screws up the hardware cause if they send that ota and it doesn't work on phones that stopped wireless charging then it sucks. Hope that when that fix comes it restores phones that had the issue. That rep just answered one question but opened the door to a whole lot more.

That he did but from his choice of words which I could not by no means quote verbatim, he acted like it was software that messed up the hardware. He did get on my phone remotely because I had to give him access. It was pretty neat a little great play button overlay came up in the middle of my phone and stated an agent can see my screen. You know in the end your right...all he did was give me a reason to ask more questions but I had way much to do and still do than to talk to him. If my new phone bugs out then I am gonna have to make time to find out.
From my experience with multiple phones and multiple cases, I do not believe it is a software issue... I believe the actual hardware fails.... I do think see how restoring using LG flash tools would not resolve a software glitch

Fyi there is an att remote service installed on these phones by default so yes they can remote in. Ugh this blows as it just happened to me.

But no means do I actually know what's going on but anything is possible. It could be a situation where a software setting being set wrong could has caused a piece of hardware to short out. Ex: The software setting for allowed voltage was set to high and shorted a resistor for the hardware that controls wireless charging voltage and when the rep remotes into my phone he saw a reading of "null". So to sum up a software problem caused irreversible hardware damage.
One thing I can say indefinitely is the rep I dealt with said there was a memo on it and when he remotes into My phone he immediately within 30 seconds found what he was looking for and confirmed I needed a replacement phone. He then said it was a software problem that couldn't be corrected at the time.
I just hope the New phone I get is corrected, as he assured me it would. Who knows if it will. I hope whatever the cause LG and AT&T either finds the solution or have already.
Interesting, this insinuates a software change on the refurbished handset. Are you going to end up with a different build number? How long till it shows up in official builds? (These are just out loud musings.) Sorry to hear that there's yet another poor implementation on this phone. I think they were trying too hard to get out in front of Apple's announcement and the IFA.

When it gets here you bet I will go thru it with a tooth in a comb to see if there is any difference maybe they actually changed a piece a hardware in the New one to compensate for a software deficiency. If it stays fixed I am sure we will find out the truth way later or possibly never.
One thing the rep did say is that if there is a software update it would be a while because not a lot of people were utilizing the wireless charging.
I've been using freedompop for a few years. I mainly just use wifi and get by OK with the free 500MB or data, however, as time has gone on their support has declined. I've had a few HTC phones and currently have a Galaxy S3. This phone has worked very well, but, I think I have a usb port problem and rather than repair it I'm thinking of replacing it with some newer (used or refurbished) model. I've noticed that lately it is using up a lot of my data from background system apps. I've found how to restrict background data, but, when an app updates, I lose this setting and don't always catch it. I'm also using AICP as the ROM and maybe there is something in it that is causing this as well.
In any event it is an older model phone and I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions on any good cheap phones to look for to replace it.
I do like the ability to change the battery. I can carry around a spare battery and have a spare battery and charger in the car as well. I also like the ability to charge wirelessly and use bluetooth a good deal.
I've heard there is a new fast charge feature on some newer phones, this might be of interest as well.
Does anyone have any suggestions on phones to look at?
Also, I'm open to another service besides freedompop if there are any others like this. Also, because I'm looking at limited data plans I'd be interested more in how to better restrict or control background data use.

-Buggy out of box -
OS must have froze/shutdown several times trying to do normal setup
-Case provided falls off phone-
Case way to large to fit on phone. Basically useless. Falls off if you go to grab phone by case. More dangerous than not having one at all
-Finger zoom-
For some reason I cannot zoom on normal pictures, text, ect. Very odd. I have an LG, several Motos and a XIOAMI phones next to me where I am able to zoom in apps, web pages where the Edge I cannot. I don't understand this at all
-NO OPTION ANYWHERE FOR WIFI CALLING- This may be the dealbreaker. I have LOTS of android phones including about five Motos (going back to G4) and they all at least have the option for Wifi calling (depends on carrier if it actually works) but the Edge does NOT even have it as an option. WHY MOTO, WHY???
If anyone is having these issues and it's human error - PLEASE LET ME KNOW, lol.

Mine works fine out of box (30.114-23)
You way want to run LMSA rescue mode to reinstall ROM and wipe once.
I have mine rooted few hours after trial.
VoLTE works right away with T-Mobile

Thanks for replying. I have never heard of LMSA rescue mode. I will have to look that up.
I have inserted a Verizon, ATT and a cricket SIM (all activated) and no wifi option with any...
Just spent some time on phone with Moto support and all they can say is "look for wifi calling in settings". Basically NO help.

Oh
Their Wi-Fi Calling is restrictive. You have to call the carrier to provision.
T-Mobile is pretty liberal. All you need is just put SIM in and it's done
I boxed it up and sent it back today. The back cameras are mediocre but the selfie camera was pretty terrible. For some reason when using the selfie camera my entire skin tone would randomly appear an orangy/yellow color. It was crazy. It happened pretty often. I watched a few youtube reviews of the Edge and one of them noted the exact same phenomena. Based on Motorola's reputation for updates, I decided to send it back. I have a $250 Xiaomi Note 9S that takes way better pictures than this thing.
In addition, I used it on T-Mobile and wifi calling worked out of the box.

Had no issue, case works and fits great, double tap to zoom..Wifi calling is in notification just turns on...
Just wanted to find some opinions on what to get basically it's been awhile since I was on her and my note ten is having the cold battery can't charge issue so Im looking what to replace it with and need root and loved the functionality of a fully unlocked bootloader but I missed the great speeds of a US phone since I'm in the US so wonder what I shoud do?

I've never seen that warning. Use something like DevChek to view all the sensor temperatures.
May just be a battery failure. They're good for about 2 years on a heavily used phone, my lasted 1.5 years and failed.
I'm looking at getting a second Note. My choices are another 10+ or a new 20U. It will likely be another 10+; it a solid, stable, fast phone with no glaring issues. If still running on Pie, that's a huge plus, Android 10 and especially 11 just suck. I don't have high hopes for 12.
So if it's the battery or C port PCB*, just replace and wait for the 2022 Note release.
From what I've read the Snapdragon has a better chipset architecture and instruction set.
They seem to be notoriously hard to root. Probably not a good choice for rooting.
I know you can optimize a stock 10+/Pie, not sure how well that will go with Android 10 and above. Some of the functionality isn't there for valuable 3rd party apps like Karma Firewall's logging feature. You can still use Package Disabler or ADB edits to kill the bloatware though.
On newer high dollar phones is many ways rooting is a liability especially with warranty/insurance and you lose Knox, Samsung Pass etc if you use that junk. There are those especially on this forum that swear by it but won't acknowledge their cost in time (which can be and typically is huge) and inconvenience.
Stock Androids/roms are easier to troubleshoot and more secure. If there are issues with a stock setup there will be thousands or more with the same issue making solutions more likely and easier to find. With a custom setup you are on your own which can quickly implode into a time sucking blackhole in more ways than there are stars.
If I was going to root it be an older Note... not a brand new one... risk/time vs reward.
*the C port PCB may have a temperature sensor, not sure. It can cause a lot of bizarre issues in seemingly unrelated systems like internet connection, I know that for a fact. Make sure if you do replace it you get the exact PN that on that PCB or it will not function properly! Both the battery and C port PCB are relatively easy to replace with the proper tools and skillset. Both are cheap, under $50. Make sure you replace the back cover OEM seal with the same or equivalent if you open it up. Do not use generic double sided adhesive tape!

i had this same issue of yours ,
"to cold to charge" can't charge ,
notice/issue .....many years back .
Can't remember which device of mine it was , think it was a Samsung Tablet A 2016 .
Anyway ,
Took devices to Samsung Service Centre.
It was the USB charging port .
They did not charge me much for the repairs .
Got it fixed and device charging normally / working fine afterwards.
My point is whatever you do or decide do not "throw/give "device away .
It's a small fix.....!

I am running the US snapdragon spammy 20 - ultra rooted up with boot loader unlocked thanks to afane and his advanced bros, although due to the lock down on many features such as scoped (controlled) storage preventing apps from being installed outside of the control room (googel store), did I mention notification sound got locked down too?
