Odd SMS problem - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So for a while now I've had issues texting my brother, he has an iPhone 5c and I of course have a Nexus 5. I have extensively troubleshot this and searched online for solutions. Some said something about a bug in the Nexus 5 hardware that causes SMS messages not to go through on LTE or WiFi or something...but this only affects my brother's number
Whenever I send an SMS on hangouts (or the old stock messages app on CM11) to my brother, he never gets them. My phone shows that it has sent but he never gets it. He does receive my MMS messages. I tried changing apps, turning on and off various connectivity (bluetooth, wifi, LTE, data, etc) and only once he was able to get a message when I shut off WiFi, but I wasn't able to reproduce it again.
I get all his messages right now, but at one point I wasn't able to get his SMS messages either.
I traded my SIM into another older phone and he received all my SMS messages. Put it back in my Nexus 5, still the same problem. I tried a full reset with CM, a full reset to stock, I even had the problem with the phone I RMA'd for an unrelated issue. I'm stumped, because all the other numbers I have recieve my texts just fine, and I've long since removed extra devices from my old iCloud account.
Any ideas??

Are you sure the problem is on your side? I know that in Android you can block certain contacts from calling\texting you - I would make sure you're not blocked, found this online: http://ios.wonderhowto.com/how-to/b...messages-imessages-your-iphone-ios-7-0147393/

Wait, you're using CM. Do you use Google Voice? Is Voice+ enabled? And does this happen on other ROMs? Which carrier are you on and which carrier is he on?

[Q] NS4G not sending SMS?

Have any of you heard of this?
Yesterday my phone decides it's NOT going to send SMS through the stock messaging app. I don't get an error, it appears as though it sends, but my recipient never receives it.....most of the time. Sometimes they go thru, sometimes they don't. It seems to mostly NOT go thru.
If the SMS does NOT go through, I can never see it in Google Voice.
If I use the Google Voice SMS app on my phone, recipient receives 100% of their SMS, same with Web interface.
If I disable my Google Voice account via the web and sign out via my phone, my recipient receives 100% of their SMS using the stock app.
I have all the settings nailed. Google Voice is set to sync, background data enabled, etc.... It was, has been working flawlessly up until yesterday with nothing on the phone changing.
I have wiped, reflashed, tried different ROMs, etc....
Today I called Sprint, they re-provisioned things, then basically said since it's a third party app they can't help. I want to beat my head against a wall here.
Anyone have any idea of what the problem could be?
I can't offer any help but I can tell you I saw the exact same problem all day on the 16th and 17th. I've since switched the Google Voice app to use it's own notifications and turned off the text notifications. For the time being, I'm not even using the stock messaging app.
I remember Sprint having an SMS problem a few months ago one afternoon, but it wasn't specific to GV. Maybe something in their GV integration system is a little wacky right now. People said they got about half of the messages I was sending before I switched to the GV app full time.
Good to know I'm not the only one. Looks like a couple of other people have the same problem over in the Google help forums. I de-integrated my account for almost two days, I'm getting ready to re-integrate it now, we shall see what happens. The support for these phones is god awful. If this doesn't resolve it I'm driving to the nearest corporate store and returning it through their window.
LOL! I'm hoping it doesn't come to that, but if you do decide to "return" it, you may want to attach a brick or something. This phone feels way to light to do any damage without a little extra help.

Here's a little update. Not really a good one, but whatever...
All of the text messages I had tried to send though the stock messaging app must have made it to Sprint at least because they all just dumped en mass upon their intended recipients. I got a pile of very confused responses.
Maybe the issue has been resolved. I'll switch my settings back and experiment a little.
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using XDA App
That didn't happen to me, but it does appear that my texts are going through. There's one person who says she never gets some, but I can see they're sycning to GV now, where they weren't before. Everyone else is getting my texts too. I have no idea what happened but I'm a little at ease knowing someone else had the problem. I hope it never happens again, I rely on SMS for my business.

[Q] Tricky issues receiving MMS

I'm going nuts trying to figure out how to fix my MMS issues — maybe you guys can help. I have an unrooted N5 running 4.4.4 that is inconsistently receiving MMS messages (both photos and group texts). I'm currently using StraightTalk, though I was having the same issue with Cricket.
My APN settings are correct (from what I can figure), and sometimes I receive incoming MMS. I currently have Textra and GoSMS installed as my texting apps, with GoSMS currently as my default. Occasionally I'll receive an error in GoSMS that an MMS message was unable to be downloaded, and try as I may, I can never get the app to download and display it. However, if I open up Textra, the message will have come through there with no problem. So basically, unless I have 2 apps gathering MMS, I'll miss half of them. I only installed GoSMS after seeing it as a suggestion/solution in another forum - this was happening before I both installed. I was originally using Hangouts for SMS/MMS, which was having the same problem (and why I initially DL'd Textra).
I occasionally have issues sending out an MMS. It's a less frequent occurrence than the issues receiving, though it does happen.
I am thinking that if this was a network issue, the MMS wouldn't come through to my phone at all, so I've stopped trying to mess with my APN. Does anyone have any ideas on how to solve this?
I have Straight Talk too and been having issues with MMS i'm using 8sms. I have the old 3g sims card. what about you ?

I'm currently having the same issue with a non rooted device.
I was originally with H20 (an AT&T mvno) and would have periodic issues with MMS. Both sending and receiving. I am using Google Hangouts.
I recently switched to Cricket (owned by AT&T) earlier this month (reasons unrelated), and have not been able to send or receive an MMS since. I have spent several hours on the phone with both Cricket and LG, even going into a store to have my SIM replaced. I came across this thread accidentally while looking for suggestions on the best way to do a backup before I try a factory reset as a last resort to resolve the problem.
APN has been verified correct numerous times and unfortunately, Cricket's cust service is next to useless. After two and a half weeks and numerous calls, I still have yet to hear back from a Tech Support rep. I'm not sure whose network straight talk uses, but I wonder if it's a network issue with AT&T subcarriers?
The most frustrating part is every time I talk to somewhat at Cricket cust service, they say that the Nexus 5 is not "officially supported" on their network and that it is probably a phone issue and try to sell me a new phone. When I explain that the Nexus 5 runs stock Android, they try and tell me that that might be the problem *SMH*.
Anyone else?

Yes me too. I found out today that my G2 can't get MMS at all. I've tried tons of fixes and nothing seems to work.
No sure if anyone is still experiencing the MMS issues on Nexus 5 as I am. I have a stock, unrooted N5 running Android 4.4.4 on Tmobile. GoSMS is my default sms client. What happens totally randomly is that I COMPLETELY lose the ability to send/receive MMS picture messages (group messages that come in as MMS are unaffected). Once I lose MMS, ALL text I have which have picture messages attached change from viewable icons to blank images or "Xs". All MMS messages in go become white boxes that say "picture does not exist). It has not mattered if I have taken all other text clients off the phone and used ONLY Hangouts as the default, it still happens. This is the ONLY solution I've found to fix the issue:
1) Set Hangout as default sms client
2) Reset APNs to default (settings-->SMS-->Access Point Names--> hit three dots-->reset to default)
3) Go to main phone settings (Settings-->More-->Mobile Networks-->Access Point Names), reset to default
4) Select the APNs that your device normally uses (for me, its fast.t-mobile.com), set MMS Port to 8080 and save APN
5) go back into Hangouts, select the same APN (fast.t-mobile.com), set the MMS Port to 8080 and save APN
6) Reboot phone
Once its rebooted, if your MMS images are once again viewable in Hangouts, its fixed and you can send/receive picture messages again. You can now switch to whatever default client you chose. This has worked for me EVERY time to 'fix' the MMS issue, but what I have never figured out is WHY its happening and I can't pinpoint exactly when it started. I want to say the update to 4.4.2 may have triggered it, but I honestly can't recall. I know this wasn't ALWAYS an issue. If anyone else has any theories/ideas, I'm all ears. Its just a pain in the a** to have to reset the APNS in two spots and reboot every time this happens (I think I read that Hangouts' APN settings can override the system APN settings so that's why I reset in both spots). I've tried ONLY resetting the main phone's APN and it didn't fix the issue.

**com.qualcomm.qcrilmsgtunnel** is your gn0me in the engine;
where sms/ mms is *natively* transported via the native phone functions & hooks, hangouts provides the same functionality *over the top* of the carrier's route, strictly IP; call it hi-jacking in a sense, that's what you en-able hangouts to do on reboots, hijack those functions..
*SIM toolkit
*Phone/Messaging storage
*Phone
is what com.qualcomm.qcrilmsgtunnel is tied to, which hangouts, isn't..
Last update to hangouts screwed up my APN setting. ?

T-mobile texting issues.

My text messages are delayed on T-mobile with the new xperia Z3 D6616. I dont get texts until hours after they are sent. I have tried to use the stock sony messaging, hangouts, textra, and whatsapp. they all have huge delay. I have restored to factory settings since I thought it was from switching from iphone and bringing text history with me...... after the restore to factory with no contacts or text history, there is still a several hour delay on texts. please help!!

Might be a sim or network issue, mine works fine. Take it to TMO and try out a new sim.

Is it SMS or MMS? If you have wifi calling enabled and its active, you will not be able to send/receive MMS. SMS should work though. Otherwise, maybe its an outage in your area.
thanks guys. i did a restore, removed all my old iphone text history, and turned off wifi calling. it seams to be working, but i tried turning off wifi calling before all this. I am using textra now, not sure if I like the battery consumption or not yet, but its fast now. mms seams to be going through fast now too.
on a side note, the stock Sony messaging app is terrible for mms messages, and just texting in general i think.

I just let Hangouts handle my SMS/MMS, you can do the same.

Must only be on the T-Mobile version.
having the same issues with tmob. this is my second z3. not sure what the problem is
What does it say under Settings -> About Phone -> Status -> My phone number?
If it says unknown, try fixing that. I had to stick my SIM into an old BB Curve and edit the MSISDN. Since then Hangouts has been grouping iMessage MMS correctly
I'm also on my second Z3 (T-Mobile) right now. Everything they've told me to "fix" the solution in which my text messages aren't sending through until I retry 5-8 times, has yet to work permanently.
I've just now turned off the VoLTE to see if that will help. I've been told to turn off Wi-Fi calling automatically (even if that feature is turned off anyways) and that helped for what seemed like 24 hours. I've done several Master Resets and those, again, only helped for a day or two.
I downloaded Sony's PC Companion and all that did, essentially, was another Master Reset to my phone while saying "Software has been updated."
Now I'm still struggling with the same issue in which my phone won't send texts. I called Sony and talked to them; they're only offering a refurbished replacement. Otherwise, they said to hold the power button and the volume up button at the same time to do a power cycle. This fixes the phone temporarily, but not permanently. Plus, I don't feel like turning my phone on and off 5-7 times a day if necessary. None of my previous Xperia models needed this.
So after I use my phone with VoLTE off for a while, I'll report back. Otherwise... This might be the downfall of Xperia for me.

I am having the same issue as well. So is probably a software issue. Hopefully T-Mobile can update soon. It's really annoying. Are you also having problem receiving texts? People send me texts but I never receive them.
:[ Still having issues
Sorry for bringing up the old-ish thread but I'm becoming quite irritated over this issue. I got the phone as a bday gift last month, but since then I've been also experiencing these messaging outages. Before, it was a text delayed by some time, which progressed to some hours, and now some texts I don't receive at all until AFTER I restart the phone. The phone actually will show two timestamps (via the textra app, which I also downloaded to try and help alleviate the problem, but it hasn't) that show when i finally viewed the text (after restart) and when the text "should" have arrived. I notice the problem mostly persists when the phone has been on hiatus for a while; typically if I'm still actively using/looking at the phone or texting, the messages sent from people will arrive when they were sent. But, once the screen has been off for some time, that's when SMS arrives delayed/after phone restart and MMS are just a lost cause. I'm on the TMO service, and trying to contact them have been less than helpful. Literally, they just told me to text myself, and when I said "yes, the text arrived" they assumed the problem was fixed despite me telling them IF I'M LOOKING AT MY PHONE, MOST OF THE TIME THE TEXT WILL ARRIVE. So, I'm also partially ranting about their customer service. I've tried disabling the WiFi, I've already swapped the phone, I've tried tinkering with some of the settings about having data run while phone is off, and nothing has fixed the issue.
Thanks for bringing the thread back up. I have noticed that I have intermittant text sending issues, too. As well as receiving issues (it has been about 3 days now since my wife received the same MMS sitting right next to me with her SGS4. I didn't pay attention if they were when I was connected to wifi, etc, but I just tried disabling volte and will update as I come to more conclusions.
Come to think of it, I have another weird thing with group messages. When I respond, I'll get the same text I send out back, from myself.
Omg this is happening. Seriously nothing but disappoint on this phone on t-mobile. No group text, and trouble sending out some sms.. Hope for an update. Battery has been dying faster too 17 hrs. And sony remote play is just choppy now....3 month on this phone. Sad

Nexus 5 on Sprint is no longer sending or receiving SMS

My phone has suddenly decided to no longer send or receive sms at all on Sprint. I've been running Sabermodded SlimKat for months with no issues whatsoever and just the other day SMS suddenly stopped. It says the text sends in any messaging app I use but it never actually seems to send. If I try to text myself to test it also I get no messages back when though it says they all send. The weird thing is MMS is working fine, I can send myself pictures and any one of my contacts, but I do not see their SMS messages or my own, none are getting through. I tried wiping and flashing over to 5.0 (Cataclysm) instead and I still cannot send sms. I've tried updating my PRL and Profile many times, Reflashing a flashable Sprint APN zip, manually setting APN in hangouts, messenger, textra, qksms etc. I've tried flashing different radios on 4.4.4 (before I flashed 5.0 now I just have the final L preview radio) and I have even tried removing the sim card and rebooting before placing it back in. Has anyone encountered this issue before? I am at a loss.
Try downgrading to 1x only and see if it works?

Just tried it, sms still isn't going through, 1x only 3g only or LTE only.
Might try going back to the stock rom and seeing if it works then. That would probably be the easiest way to make sure it isn't the device or the rom you are using.
Are you able to make calls?
Does the data connection work still?
Was texting removed/blocked on your account?

Did you take an OTA? Update to Lollipop? If so, you may need to flash the Sprint fix.
After a lot of trial and error I ended up calling sprint since I've never had just sms fail while mms still worked. Turns out my MIN number wiped itself (somehow?) and have since gotten it resolved. Sadly I don't really have the slightest idea how it happened since I had been using the same kitkat rom as my daily driver for months. Thanks for the suggestions and attempts to figure out what was wrong.

Can't receive pictures via MMS

I'm unrooted, on the latest version 5.1.1.
About two months ago or so, whenever I received a MMS from someone with a picture, my messaging app wouldn't download the picture.
This is hit and miss, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. I can send pictures via MMS, and recipients get them fine, I just can't receive them all of the time.
I've tried various messaging apps (stock, Google Messenger, Contacts+, etc.) and they all behave the same way. I've even tried to manually put in the APN information, and it has no effect.
Mobile data is turned on at all times, so I don't think that is the issue. Also, regular texts come in just fine.
Friends that try to send pics are using various phones on various carriers (some even on Verizon), so I have no idea what the problem is.
Any help would be appreciated.
I'd check your app settings first and then call verizon tech support since your not rooted. I use handcent and on verizon and I remember something like this years ago on a bionic, but it was a mobile network problem. Try having MMS msgs sent with mobile data on?
