[Q] What is this weird device?? - General Questions and Answers

I have an Xperia device and was searching through the Play Store for anything that's Small App compatible, then found this video demonstration of an app:
" ソニタブッター for small app: http://youtu.be/cG63zb4jN9w "
My question: What on earth is the device used in the video?
It could be something Sony, since it was demonstrating a Small App for Xperia devices. It's definitely Android, since it was demonstrating functionality of something in the Play Store. This is the only video by that uploader on YouTube and his channel is in a foreign language, otherwise I'd ask him directly.
It looks like a really cool device , and might be fun for everyone to know more about.
Any insight would be appreciated! Thanks in advance!

Me either.
And apparently it even came stateside? The link you shared isn't even an unlocked, but an AT&T-branded device.
But Android Honeycomb? What kind of hardware is inside there?
Also, thanks for responding?

Apparently updatedable to 4.0 ICS. Honeycomb 3.0 was a tablet-only version of Android that was abandoned/integrated into 4.0 and future versions.

You're welcome?

Yeah, but Honeycomb feels awkward and nerfed between 4.0 ROMS and Cyanogenmod 7's openness.
Definitely good hardware for its time though. I wonder what other special development endeavors were made on the device?
Maybe it would've caught on if it had some sort of interface on the outside of the clamshell as well? Like the concepts in Samsung's demo video when they first announced flexible displays.
But that's a different subject.
Thanks again for the information. No question about it this time ?

[Q] Possible way to mirror phone screen over DLNA?

I know it's a huge disappointment that HTC didn't put in a HDMI port, something that didn't bother me until recently.
I know for a fact that DLNA works great for streaming videos and photos taken on my phone to my TV, even on CM7.
I also just recently saw those youtube videos of guys using their Evo 4gs as their desktop, and wondered if there was a way for this to be accomplished on our phones. I was mainly thinking there was some way to work some magic over DLNA, and then bluetooth speakers, mouse and keyboard for the rest.
Anyone know if this is possible at all or even semi possible?
(I tried to search before posting but the search was down)
I'm also looking for an answer to this
I would like to see some idea on this too. I guess we're in the minority.
I agree as well, this is something I would be interested in. I remember when I bought my previous phone (nokia 5800 XM). I was quite excited about it's video out function, only to find it's composite analog video out to be wanting.
When I was trying to decide between inspire and the Atrix, a big deciding point for me was the untested nature of the dual core, and so far I like the results of my choice, the 2nd gen snapdragon has plenty of ooomph to play my highly compressed x264 mkvs and the battery is somewhat reasonable, however the screen mirroring is something I would really be interested in, surely with the gpu/cpu combo in place some kind of solution could be put into place, it doesn't take that much bandwidth to push a 2d desktop worth of images, especially with modern network speeds.
Here's hoping!
I am really hoping for a way to do this too. That new crackle app would be a lot nicer if I could watch it on my tv.

I was searching for it too, but no luck.... Hope someone gets hands on this
I'm also looking for a way to mirror the screen of my sony tablet S to the TV set - via dlna?
would be cool to hear from someone with dlna related developement experience.
They say it's not even possible to make a screenshot on android without root permissions. (no, please dont start a discussion about screenshots now, explaining how wrong I am
Dude, I think you've got the wrong section, this is the INSPIRE 4G SECTION.
hope someone posts a tutorial
no matter what section. the problem is the same on all dlna capable devices.

[Q] Video chat

Wanting to do video chat with a friend of mine, and she said something about her using "Facetime" does that sound right? she has AT&T. looked up "facetime" for droid but can't find it. im on Verizon (Thunderbolt). is there an app that will let me video chat w/her but still let her use her "Facetime" app? or do we both need something like Skype?
I have the LG Revolution..you need GingerBread or 2.2.3 update to do any type of front facing chat
As far as I know, Facetime is a video-chatting application for iPhone / iPad only. It is restricted to those devices and won't work with Android, for instance.

damn! ok, thanks.
It also only works over Wifi, so basically slightly less useful than other video chat phones.
I've just seen that the new version of Skype for Android has a function like that. But I haven't tried it yet.

New Android handheld gaming console

The Yinlips YDP-G18 is probably the cheapest Android device you can find with dedicated game controls. It would be cool if someone could cook up an updated English language ROM for it.

Video showing it emulate N64 and PSX games:

Hello,
This is a very promising console, we are currently testing and we must admit that this console is doing pretty well ... It's just a few thoughtful developers to take advantage of the machine maximum.
Go on google and write "CAANOO forumactif" to see the test!
The root is effective and the market is available.
Sorry for my poor english, i'm french
They already rooted it and installed android market on it. IMHO, it should get its own section. Having stripped down froyo or gb roms on it could further improve performance and battery life.
If I had the coin, I'd buy it right away. It's priced at $125 with free shipping. And it's the projection of my most beautiful dreams. Except for the two cameras it has.
It's actually a good product that can have enormous potential. Its biggest flaw is its current autonomy should be 3 hours with Wi-Fi enabled.
The screen is resistive, but responds well. It allows running N64 and PSX games fairly easily and without overclock.
I would love to also see a section for Android handheld and quickly see the arrival of Roms Customs and modified kernels.
For those who want to take the tests, the French member of the community are being Caanoo get them to see what she has in the stomach. I'm happy to keep you informed of the various tests that we will achieve.
I'm also getting one of these, looks promising with some tweaks or a new custom rom will be much better
Only 3 hr battery life? You'd think they'd be able to get more in there. But cool concept nonetheless.
Those who want to see the handheld running you can go see the videos that were made by @ BAFelton at: Sorry but i can't link URL, so Go on Youtube and search BAFelton61
It gives a good idea of what is possible.
Also, @ qbertaddict also examines the machine
Will get back to you almost certainly after the new year. Ordered it yesterday and they announced 15-20 business days until arrival
Yinlips has announced the update 2.3 (gingerbread) on the G18. This is good news to know that there is a follow-up from the manufacturer!

Yeah i'm follow up this awesome device too, and still check what is possible to do with .... Christmas is coming...

From what I can see in the videos, it's Chinese by default but can be changed to English. Since it's an Android device, in theory you would eventually be able to cook custom roms for this thing.
This is a steal, even though the touchscreen is resistive the specs are very good.
My interests are in the details, though: Does the analog stick work as a mouse in android? How is the screen quality with brightness and color? How easily can ROMs be customized?
If these things met with satisfaction I would buy today.

2K13 (Basketball) Coming to Android!

Finally a full basketball game for Android, although there's nothing about Xperia Play Optimization which is kind of sad, but there's nothing confirming that it WON'T be optimized for our phones I hope it will be though, because NBA JAM just isn't doing it for me.
I would post links, but this is my first post. You can find some articles by googling "2K13 coming to Android"

WTF to 2k, this just because the ****ing compatiblity of ICS. Google want to save his face so ask some devs to add OS restriction to their new games, not base on ics directly.
And i just found a pirated version with restriction hacked which can be run on 2.1 flawlessly, maybe 2.3 as well

Care to share what search terms where involved?
Do hardware buttions work?
Bah, at this point, since it's only available for ICS I doubt it has optimization. I emailed the developer yesterday wondering why none of my devices had shown up as compatible, but it's just the ICS restriction. I also asked about Xperia Play Optimization.
But I haven't gotten a response yet, so fingers crossed!
If I have to believe what I saw, it isn't XP optimized and it doesn't work properly in our phones. In fact it's optimized for Tegra devices.

If some one can get it to play without restricitions you can in theory use "Game Keyboard 2.0" and optimize it to the gamepad on the Xperia Play and see how that works out. PM me a link to that version thanks and good luck to you guys keep us updated.

Qualcomm TOQ: too weak to run Android Wear ROMs I guess...

So, a "number" of OEMs are using Qualcomm SOCs for their Android Wear devices.
So my guess would be that Qualcomm TOQ is a "reference platform" for Android Wear.
Perhaps there may be ROMs released.... or leaked given that OEMs surely have them already.
No source code for now....
I'm guessing the kernel will be the more or less usual Android variant of the Linux kernel, perhaps with fewer drivers/features. And it's ARM of course.
How similar to standard Android on the higher level ?
I'm still pretty new to smart-watches. I haven't looked at the preview SDK yet.
EDIT: Uses an STM micro, too weak I'd guess to run Android (Wear variant).
EDIT: Looking now, and wondering if the code will even be open sourced ? Google may want to have more control this time around. Google, and the HW OEMs, might even put in roadblocks to custom ROMs even if the source is open, including the usual device locking of course.
http://developer.android.com/wear/preview/start.html :
Caution: Do not install apps on the Android Wear emulator. The system does not support traditional Android apps and the result of running such apps is unpredictable.

LOL. Time to try some of my apps and see what happens.
EDIT2: My app UI works !, although the UI is very squished. Looks almost like normal Android (from the app/dev point of view, Launcher or whatever UI is very different). I'm sure a whole bunch of APIs don't work and some will never work.
hm they use their cpus, why not the displays?
mirasol displays seem to be the perfekt ones

I really doubt that the toq can run google wear. It is using a 200mhz non snapdragon soc.

Is there a teardown of it somewhere ?
I really think the android wear platform is going to be locked down. I even doubt google will allow oem customization beyond maybe some skinning. Wearables is too fragile of a market to allow the amount of freedom we have on android phones/tablets. So, that means it'll probably have specific hardware requirements and such that prevent it from running on devices that weren't intended to run it. Even if it were remotely possible it wouldn't work very well. Look at other porting projects like Windows phone to android devices and sense for non-htc devices.
I'm leaning towards Google treating "Android Wear" the same as "Android Phone/Tablet".
Google has never hesitated to be open with the "basic" code to run Nexus devices. Open source is good for them.
That's the low level stuff that they build upon and REALLY protect with closed source and licensing requirements: Google Play, GMail, etc.
It's in their interest for everybody to be build the compatible low level.
I don't think Google has committed on the matter publicly yet, funny.

Thanks ! I thought there was only one teardown and it cost $1250 to see.
So, STMicroelectronics STM32F207IGH6 ARM Cortex-M3 32-Bit Microcontroller...
Not a Qualcomm SOC/CPU. And only 16 MB of RAM ???
I don't think this will ever run Wear.
I guess it's just an early prototype, of Mirasol among other things.

Let me say for the purposes of CYA that I found the Tech Insights link merely by searching for the term "wcn2243 data sheet" Which is one on of the smaller chips on the Toq.

Same company, more detailed report, including some die photos. Advertised for $1250 here: http://www.techinsights.com/reports...market-reports/Report-Profile/?ReportKey=9830
You linked to a legitimate sample report, linked from this page: http://www.techinsights.com/teardown.com/teardown-sample-reports/
I looked at the firmware for the 1st Sony smartwatch and could see several of the hardware components and some proprietary RTOS. Sony supposedly "opened" the watch, but it's just a toy OS last I looked. They weren't releasing anywhere near enough code to replicate stock.
Anyway, the TOQ parts list seems somewhat reasonably similar; there's probably just a few common designs out there. But things may be changing if the new watches will run an actual variant of Android; ARM based micro-controllers being replaced with I guess more powerful "SOCs", not that it's too easy to distinguish a SOC from a micro...
...Now I'm wondering what's in the Chromecast I just got, LOL... Google is going more deeply embedded now.
