Failing battery sensor(?), unable to boot normally. - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So my issue is that my phone believes that the battery is out of power. Weather the phone is on or off it charges just fine when connecting the charger, it just doesn't show any indication. When it's on it reacts by activating the display when connecting the cord.
I found a workaround to boot up the phone though, but I'd like to be able to know what's left of the battery anyhow!
To boot up my device I have to disconnect the battery and connect the charger. That way I'm able to boot up download mode. Once I'm there I reconnect the battery and choose start. The phone boots just fine and I don't experience any issues at all.
It all happened when I switched out my cracked display for a new.
I even tried replacing the battery, as well as the flex cable connecting the USB port to the motherboard.
The only thing I could imagine be wrong would be some hardware sensor failing, but then again I don't see how that could have happened.
Is that sensor on the motherboard?
A thing I haven't yet tried is a factory reset. Would that have any impact?

No ideas, huh?

You can try a factory reset but I don't know if it makes any difference since it sounds like an hardware problem.
Sorry :\

It's a hardware problem... Head to the service centre & let them know how it happened. They'll diagnose your problem.

[Solved]My lg shows insert battery when connected to usb or wall charger.

Hello all! Here's my problem:
After i flashed my ks20 to a v10a rom it will shut down and display a "insert battery" animation when connected via usb or to a wall charger. I tried different roms (by flashing in emergency mode) but the difference is maybe a few minutes more before shut down.
Has anybody experienced something like this? or even has a solution to it?
Since i had no answers i did a little research and thanks to raykisi's link to the service manual i found out that the reason for this behaviour is charging circuit failure.
So if anyone has the same problem then i guess there's nothing you can do but to change the mainboard. Except if you are good enough to locate and replace the busted components.
KS20 Insert Battery
any new outcome?managed to flashed in emergency mode but when reboot the phone error with "Insert Battery"
But ok when Unplug Usb or Charger, unable to restore nvram..
hepp hepp.. Raysiki.. mayday.. maydayy...

is this 4 real? omg cant we just reflash or reinstall the windows or smth? well that sux
According to the service manual you have to change the motherboard. I have tried several Roms and the problem seems permanent. The only changes i have seen have to do with the time the phone lasts until the "Insert Battery" message appears. I hope that someone can come up with a software based solution to this but i seriously doubt it.
KS20 Insert Battery
its serious!! i just sent out one unit of KS 20 to service center, bought from some one with very cheap USD80.00, i thought i can reflash and works.
waiting still with the hope that mainboard below my budget

[Q] power down bug?

hey guys.
i just want to know if you guys can replicate a problem i found and see if the problem i have is isolated or not.
so i've been charging my phone today and noticed that when i try and power down the phone while it is charging, the phone hangs at the shutdown circle and freezes.
when i unplug the charger (wall charger), then the phone immediately turns off.
at first i thought it was because of low battery ( i ran the phone until it died).
then i thought it was because i had no wireless connection (was in building-no signal).
when there was enough juice, i shut down the phone (not charging this time) and the phone powers down.
if this has been already covered, i apologize...
sorry for the bad grammar/punctuations. im feeling lazy. lol

defective NS?
My phone powers down while plugged in just fine. I just checked for you.
It takes about 30 seconds of the spinning shutting down message, then the screen switches to the battery charge icon for a few seconds, then the screen goes black.
A quick press (don't hold) of the power button brings back the battery charge icon for another 10 seconds or so.
Thanks for the reply. What is weird is that I tried the test at my local best and their demo phone was exhibiting the same thing. Maybe I'm not letting it shut down long enough.
okay, i've powered down again while charging. stuck on power down screen.
been over 2 min.
looks like i'm replacing this today.
anyone else want to chime in on this?

Since you're going to have to do a factory wipe/reset for privacy/security to exchange the phone anyways, can I suggest that before you assume the phone is bad that you perform a factory reset on it and then test again?
For all we know, you've got some rogue app that is causing the problem. I'd hate to see the NS returned as bad hardware when it might possibly just be bad software you've installed...

exactly what i plan on doing. gonna do a factory reset first.
But i think it will still happen because the demo unit at bestbuy was a clean install with no apps on there.
But i will update as soon as i restore!
thanks distorted!
wanted to add that when i shut down the phone while it was usb connected to the comp, it shut down properly and i saw your battery icon you were mentioning.
edit:
now i tried other wall plugs, usb cords and such and it all shuts down.
very weird.
It looks like it was the micro usb charger that i was using that was the problem.
I was using one that came with my blutooth charger.
I double checked all the information of the BT plug and compared with the ones that worked. the bluetooth cable was rated a .7 amps (just like the one that came with the nexus s). other cables were rated at 1 amp (which shut down the phone fine).
oi! saved me the trip to best buy.
i tested before and after factory reset.
all good except for the BT charger.
I can confirm that this is an issue. I have a spare micro-usb cable, and when I connect that to the computer, it charges fine, but the usb-debugging or usb-drive options never appear.
While it's in this state, and I go to shut down, the Power off - Shutting Down... screen will in fact freeze until the USB cable is unplugged. It does not do this with the stock usb cable.
When this "bad" cable is used with the stock wall charger, the same thing happens.
Hmmm... I wonder what can be causing this. Anyone else have this happening?
My best guess is that maybe there's something different with the pins and they are shorting/not aligned right in some cables.

[Q] [i9023] Water damage - USB won't connect to PC.

Hi there,
My Nexus S (i9023) phone recently fell into a water bucket and I immediately pulled it out.
Not much damage was done to it except of one thing: after I put it in a bag of rice like stated on the internet for overnight, and then plugged it in again to the charger, it seems like something was different.
When I plug the phone to the AC power - phone DOES charge, but nothing else happens.
It doesn't turn on screen and informs "charging", and doesn't have the "charge when phone is off" option anymore. Instead it would just turn the phone on.
Also, when connecting the phone to the computer nothing happens, it's just charging the phone! can't mount USB anymore
I took the phone to a lab which handles these cases. They replaced the USB port and cleaned all the corrosion. They said it's fixed now, and indeed the USB port is new.
But then after coming back home it's still the same.
I'm sick of being dependant on other people and would like to fix it myself.
Any clue which part of my phone was fried? Where can I get it?
Thanks!
-zeek
Are u rooted?
Try a different ROM. Maybe one ur ur backups.
If it still does connect then it has to be the ROM assuming ur computer has the proper drivers still.
Good luck
Vs Nexus S 4G
Thanks!
Thank you!!!
Problem solved after I loaded one of my backups.
Any explanation to that? even when the phone was turned off it couldn't charge it in off mode and now it can.
How come it's a software issue?
Thanks!
I can only guess that ur ROMs kernel had a "fast charge" option. If so this doesn't allow computer connection. How it got switched to that option... who knows .... maybe the sudden power surge.
If not that, then ... strange things happen when a phone get wet.. the sudden power surge could have changed the power output causing CPU adjustments... who knows.
I'm just happy it worked for u.
I'd recalibrate ur battery asap.
Good luck
Vs Nexus S 4G
Hi, the same thing happened to me, only it wasn't a bucket, it was a pool, and changing the ROM didn't work (I've flashed at least three different ROMs since then, kind of hard when the USB port doesn't work but eh, what can you do).
Also, it's on a Gio, not a Nexus S, but the principle should still be the same, yes?

Phone acting weird and won't charge unless it is power off.

Hi everyone,
I have several problems with my AT&T 8X. First, the screen keeps on cycling through the brightness level non stop, so its constantly changing the brightness. I've tried to turn off the auto-brightness but that doesnt seem to help and this only happen after the phone booted up and I touch the screen so Im thinking it's a software issue. ANother one is that when the phone is one, the computer wont recognize the phone and it won't charge, both AC and PC charging. To charge the phone I would have to power it off and plug it in. It wouldn;t have been so bad if it wasnt for the fact that whenever the phone is power on again, there's a high chance that it will boot loop and I'll have to do a hard reset to fix it. All of these looks to be software problem to me. Hard reset doesnt seem to fix them though, does anyone has any idea?

Never faced any such problem till now Try visiting htc service centre Or try draining the battery completely and charge it completely before using Sometimes solves my screen related issues

I actually did drain the battery and charge it up again. I had to remove the screen though since it wont charge keep keep boot loop every 3 seconds. so I had to take out the screen and charge the battery separately by manually hook up the wires to it. And htc service center is no longer an option since it is no longer under warranty, which is why I opened it up in the first place lol.

You'd taken out the battery?? Thats a really hard work!! Battery is hidden inside right? and we'll have to remove everything just to reach the battery!! Did you do it on your own? I'd actually heard removing battery is very dangerous and we should be very careful since it's behind the screen and the connecting wires are too thin :silly:
If you take off the screen, there's a cable that connect the screen and the components to the battery, all you have to do is unclip the cable and hook the wire to the battery correctly (positive and negative side) and just plug it in to charge for 30 mins. Since the phone won't turn on, the battery left to be charged fully rather than keeping going into bootloop.
You don't actually have to remove the battery, just need to separate the screen from the back.

Fast charge not working in s6 after marshmallow (6.0.1) update

I updated my (factory unlocked) S6 to Marshmallow 6.0.1 and for two days it worked just fine. Then suddenly the fast charge stopped working. when i open notifications it says: cable charge, 5 hours until full charge. I tried everything, i have 2 original adaptive fc samsung chargers and none of them works. plus an aukey fast charging external battery, but when i connect my phone it keep saying cable charge. i pushed the usb into the charger, i turned on the fast charging option in settings, tried different cables. then i tried to connect it to my pc, but it doesnt recognizes my phone, and neither does the Mini MicroSD Card Reader that worked just fine before the update. I did a hard reset, but it wont work. im thinking maybe something (hardware) broke in the second day after the update, idk. i remember conecting the phone at night before going to sleep to an iphone cube with the battery at 90%, but that wont explain why my pc doesnt recognise it. I NEED HELP, PLZ
Just a thought: did you enable fast charging option from the battery menu ?
Please read again
it clearly says i turned on the fast charge option in settings

Why? How do you know? What do you think its the problem?
the weird thing is that when I connect the s6 to the wall charger it pops up the "connected as a media device" that should appear when connecting to a computer. AND when I connect it to the computer it doesnt appear, so I cant move files, etc.
I have the same issue! I know for a fact that it started right after I charged my phone a little on my friend's car charger. I have charged my phones on his charger in the past and have never had issues. It's almost like the phone got scared and locked itself down (stopped transmitting and recieving USB data, therefore not recognizing fast charger or mtp). I have been searching this issue for a while, but have not been able to find a solution. There are lots of people out there that have this problem! I have called Samsung, but they barely even wanted to talk to be because it is the unlocked variant (sm-g920i). Honestly at this point I would be willing to pay them maybe $50 to fix it. It's ridiculous! And I suspect that it is just their dumbass firmware that screwed me over!
I also suspect that is the firmware, but i have searched everywhere and the only ones that could fix it did it by changing the usb port (therefore it was a hardware problem). The ****ty thing is that this phone is too difficult to open, and too dangerous, i dont dare to do it myself, but i neither trust anyone who isnt samsung... so.. i think im just going to sell it and buy anotherone, or idk.. if you can solve the problem please let me know. I'll really appreciate it. (Sorry for bad english)
you might want to try clear both daavik cache and cache.
. I had a similiar problem, that seemed to clear it up.
to clear the dalvik cache i have to root it, and i dont want to in case i have to take it to samsung because maybe if i root it i will loose the warranty. and i already cleared all the other caches like 5 times, i dont know what to do anymore. thank you for the reply, if you know of anything else I can try...
I can confirm that it is not hardware related. I have replaced the board containing the USB port, but am still having the same issue!
And have you found a firmware/software solution to the problem? what's exactly your issue? the same as mine? no fast charge and not connecting to pc?
I also have the same problem, since wiped the device with paper and sometimes back fast loading, however the transfer via USB does not work. I believe it is software problem.
Yesterday I noticed that my data cable connects via download mode by odin, or as may be hardware if odin recognize?
guys,i got a galaxy s6 edge and i had a fast charging issue and i've checked all common solution like changing cables, chargers, even changed the socket but same issue exits my mobile charging in 6 hours and when i go to fast charge option in menu it turned on and at the moment of connecting the cable to automaticly turn off with no choise to turn it on again, any one please knows how so solve??
