[Q] Nexus 5 + kitkat 4.4.4. Temporary 941 error on play store. - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi everybody.
I bought myself a Nexus 5 recently and I am quite new to Android.
When I try to install new apps from the Play Store (build 4.9.13) I get a 941 error (let's say 90% of the time), but as soon as I try again for a second time I can download and install the app without any problems. It looks to me that the first time I try to download an app something isn't ready yet and it doesn't work, but for a couple of second after the first try everything works just fine. I thought about the 2-factor authentication being an issue, I disabled it on my gmail account but it didn't solve the problem.
I've also tried the following instructions from this thread, but it didn't work either:
1. Visit Menu > Settings > Applications > Manage applications
2. Tab over to "All"
3. Select the Play Store app, and then tap "Clear cache" and "Clear data"
For the Download manager:
1. Visit Menu > Settings > Applications > Manage applications
2. Tab over to "All"
3. Select "Download manager," and then tap "Clear data" and "Clear cache"
Also:
1. Go to "Home" > "Menu" > "Settings" > "Applications" > "Manage
applications"
2. Touch the "All" tab
3. Scroll down and select the Play Store app
4. Touch "Uninstall updates"
If you continue to experience issues after temporarily uninstalling
updates, please let me know, and I would be happy to continue to
troubleshoot.

I'm using stock KitKat 4.4.4 rooted via TowelRoot. How can I help you understand what's going on?
Thanks a lot
P.S. Everything worked fine since a couple of days ago, the only one thing that changed is the root which was not enabled previously. Has google updated the store recently?

Meanwhile I've had the chance to test another Nexus 5 (with Android L). After updating the store to the 4.9.13 build I've experienced the same issue. It must depend on google.

In the last few hours I have no longer been experiencing the issue. Maybe they fixed the store, who knows?
EDIT
I've spoken too soon. The error pops out again. Less often, but it does.

I have same the issue with a Mobistel Cynus T6 (android 4.4.2). On 2nd try it works, error 941 appears in 70% of times.

Same here

For me, too
Some android forums I read and there the people said that they have that issue, too. Not Nexus or any device problem is this. This is a Worldwide problem I think. I have the same problem, too with LG Optimus F6. But the same on all Galaxy S4, HTC, Sony etc etc... All we can do is to wait for the fix from the Google...

Then, I installed gPlay 3.5.19..still it didn't work (this one didb;t even start to download at all). lol
Worst of all, everytime i run it..google is prompting to update it..and i cant bypass that stupid update..dafuq?!! =="
What should I do? aaarrgh!! @[email protected]
I had this problem. I installed the rom and then i restored data with recovery from an other rom. After that a couldnt install some programs. And i solved it with this. I installed the rom and then i installed titanium and i did the recovery with it. Then all was ok.

Sorry for this stupid statement but honestly say Play Store never start update by itself, never prompt me also in my phone...(Don't know what happen ><) and i every time update it using apk file downloaded from another website. Sorry can't help you on this
Would it because of my phone bloatware free and using broodkernel?

As we are not the only one who facing this strange problem so in my opinion i still think that the main issue came from the Play itself. Correct me if i'm wrong because i'm not expert in android. However, flashing a new rom might be a good try and hope that it solved the problem. Good Luck !
I do not have a custom rom on my phone, but i did have the same problems. Everytime i tried to update something i get error 403. Some ppl said turn off wifi go tot 3G and try again..

This didn't work too..i flashed rom from another region..then google prompted me to update (as usual)..and after the update, *poof* same nonsense got repeated.."stuck at download" *pfft*
@mrjraider, my mobile data works fine..but for google play, its the same case.
There is definitely something going on..i sent a complaint to Google Play Support for feedback/solutions. I searched, and it seems to be a common problem in there FAQ. lmao

why not you try find out some way to make it stop auto update like my phone
***i don't know what i have set...even i always flash my phone but still doesn't prompt me for update...so might link to the google account setting
I also tried this recently as suggested by many over the internet.
Open file explorer (need to be rooted), go to:
System> Framework> rename 'framework-res.apk' to 'framework-res.apk.bak' wait for a few FC's then rename it back to 'framework-res.apk'.
This will enable you to re-enter a google account into the system. Some say this worked, but for me it hasn't. Maybe this could work for you too..who knows. (sigh)
Anyways, I just re-flashed the whole rom again..lets hope it works now.
Edit: this is so ridiculous, google taking ages to reply. I did everything i could, even re-flashed the rom..and still nothin..dafuq?!! *sigh*
Ok, peepz..i found a temporary workaround for this problem..and it WORKS!! I hope that Google gets a fix for this nonsense..and FAST!! x(
Here is what I did:
1- go to app manager from settings,
2- uninstall the latest version of google play store
3- clear data and cache of google play store
4- install version Google Play Store v3.5.19
5- when you open the market, google will still prompt you to update to the latest version (dont continue, leave it as it is)
6- if you want to update/install the apps do it thru the browser in your phone/computer (it will straight away update in your phone)
Cheers!! ^_^
ok guys i also have send a complain to google, but when you send it they says they work from 8am to 6pm on those complains so we have to wait a little.
For now i have solved the problem by freezing MarketUpdate.apk via titanium backup pro. i think that probably a new update of google play will solve this, so any now and then i will de-frost google play and check!
ok now after a while it just started update by himslf.
in the meanwhile google support team answered me sayng that the problem is that my phone is rooted. so to unroot and do a hard reset! i ansqered that they are just crazy and that i found on an italian forum a person with everything stock and not rooted with the same problem so to do not bull**** me. also if i told them so in realy good manners
then i found another way t stop this and again, for now it is working. with es filemanager i have changed privilege of vending.apk from rw--rw--rw- to r--r--r--
for now it seems like not updating anymore!
what the hell is goin on with this damn google play?!?!? i have managed to preventi it from update yesteray until now, now i opened market to check a thing and it was updated!!! Someone managed to solve this????

I seriously do not think that the problem is related to being rooted or using custom roms..dafuq?!!
So far, my workaround is working well..the only part which i dont like is everytime i have to install/update..i have be connected to the WiFi/data, and update/install manually from the browser in the device/computer.
Now google play website enables updating from the site itself (via "My Android Apps")..so its kinda convenient..but still suck!! xp
Still, am not satisfied with google's services..till now they havent replied any solution for the problem.
This works for me:
1º Install "Root Explorer" (you can use Blackmart or other alternative market)
2º Disable wifi and data
3º Settings/Applications/Manage Applications/Google Play: Unistall Updates
4º With Root Explorer: System/App/MarketUpdater.apk: change permissions to ONLY READ
It would work
EDIT: Sorry, it only work 5 minutes.

[Q] Unable to install apps from Play Store

Hello,
Post rooting (repenting it already) my Samsung Galaxy S Plus (GTI9001), I am unable to install any apps via Play Store. I am able to install apk's from the SD Card though. I un-rooted the phone but problem persist.
When I try to install any app, I can see the app being downloaded on the notification but the moment the download completes nothing happens. When i go to Play Store > My Apps I could see that it still says downloading though the app is fully downloaded. I guess some permission issues here. Please help.
I have already cleared Play Store cache and tried.

Hello,
Which Rom do you use? Maybe you have to root it again. Usually you can fix permissions in CWM. Have you tried to restart after "Download is finished". For Me it was working on my Asus EeePad.

Chris, I am still on stock ROM and I am not likely to go for a custom ROM since there are not much good ROM's available for Samsung Galaxy S Plus and Yes I tried multiple reboots. After reboot, on the notification it says that app download failed due to some error with a number.
Thanks for your reply.
Same issue
Reyolin,
I have had the same problem on my Samsung Galaxy S Plus but it has only started today. Mine has been rooted for about 5 months now, since I first got it.
I did a search using EStrong File explorer and it found a file called "downloadfile.apk" in /cache (I assume this is the file as it is the same file size as stated in the Play store. However, when I tried to run or copy it it had disappeared.
It's almost like the APK is being downloaded and then being deleted before installation actually occurs.
I think rooting your phone and the inability to install apps is just coincidental.
I will do some more playing about and see what I can find (I also already tried removing the Google Play updates (to go back to the old style Market). This still did not solve the problem.
Please use the Q&A Forum for questions &
Read the Forum Rules Ref Posting

Exactly same proble
Hi,
I have exaclty the same problem (galaxy s plus), rooted 5 month ago and problem started 2 days ago...
I updated superuser at that time and tried to update the su binarie but it fails on validation of new su and stopped (not replacing old su), this is the only thing I can remember of. root is still working with old su. Maybe the cleaning needs to be done ?
Has someone found a way to fix this?
edit:
after some investigation, this is what happens:
if I try to install one app from play store, it is downloaded correctly and then nothing happens.
the file downloaded is in /cache/downloadfile.apk
If I copy this file to /sdcard/external_sd/downloadfile.apk and run it manually it installs correctly.

galaxy s plus specific issue
i am having the same problem since morning and i also use Samsung galaxy s plus, so certainly the issue is phone specific.
Good news! Problem solved for me
Hi,
I contacted google play support and her was there answer:
Thanks for contacting us and I am sorry for the delay in responding.
We've gotten some reports that users with Samsung Galaxy S Plus devices running Android OS version 2.3 (Gingerbread) are having trouble using Google Play. We're aware of this issue and to solve it we recommend you to uninstall updates to the Google Play app by following these steps:
1. Tap Menu > Settings > Applications > Manage applications
2. Find the "All" tab
3. Scroll down to Play Store and tap to select
4. Tap "Uninstall updates"
Thank you in advance for your patience and understanding.
So I followed this and it works again!
Here are the steps after doing google recommendations:
- click google play icon, it will open old google market
- install an application, for me it worked again!
- exit google market
- click again the google play icon, it will ask to accept google play license
- click yes and then try to install another app, it worked again!
Hope this will solve also your issues,
Stef
I Just had the same problem. Here is how I fixed it,
- Uninstalled updates for Google Play
- I added a New Google Account.
- I Then signed into the new Google Account, Then Sign Into Your Main Account
And "BOOM" problem solved.

[Completed] Cannot connect to VPN with any app

Hello, I am using a sharp Aquos crystal(306sh) with root, xposed, and BusyBox all installed. Recently I have been faced with a problem that is quite annoying. Whenever I try to use a VPN app it will give me some sort of error. The main app I use is Betternet and when I tap connect it gives me a toast notification as follows: "Unfortunately, your Android does not support vpn, but you can still try restarting your device to use Betternet." This has become a real problem and has evolved from when it first began happening. when this first started happening it would just tell me to grant permission to Betternet on the prompt I was given, but that prompt would never show up. Thank you in advance to anyone who helps me and note that I would be happy to give any additional information on my problem, device, etc.
Hi !
Was this app ever working ? What android version do you have ? Have you purchased it from Google play or downloaded apk ?

Hi, Betternet was downloaded directly from Google play and I am on Android 4.4.2 KitKat. It was working before and I am not sure what could have caused the issue.
I've tried myself that app, it's working fine on nougat, uninstal it, reboot, do it again

Thanks, but I have already tried that. I don't think it is a problem with the app, but rather a problem with the system or maybe a conflicting app I have installed. The reason I am asking for help is because I DON'T want to factory reset and I don't want to accidentally make things worse. Do you have any ideas on what may be causing the issue? I would try to find out myself, but I just don't know where to start.
Do you have the VPN settings in network settings?
Try to set up from there
Try a different free VPN to see if it's app or system issue
Try to Google for kitkat vpn issues, apparently there were some reports
Xposed may have something to say, remove what you can until step by step you can identify the culprit

Yes, I do have VPN settings, but I don't know how to connect to Betternet through there. Also, I had googled this for a couple hours before posting and everyone seemed to have a different issue, but I will look again.
Finally, I have tried other apps and they all have the same problem. The problem seems not to be with connecting, but rather getting permission from the system to connect.

Motorola Xoom 10.1" Wifi MZ604 Crashing with Gapps

Hi Guys
I have just installed 4.4.4 home made Wingray omni version 20141 130-1704-+0100
system boots up okay but I get, a constant Google Account Manager, and lots of Google error messages etc etc....
Is there any higher stable 5.x.x versions I can install that Gapps works without nagging messages every 10 secs or so ?
Thanks in advance
I also have the same problem with my Motorola Xoom MZ604, that did not happen before. I have installed all possible rooms, but the same message appears to me continuously and I have no way to solve it. Is there anyone who has the solution ?.
Thank you.
same problem here :S tested all the roms
stock 4.2.2 bigpart 4.4.4
everyone starts giving google processes erros :S
i thought it was just my problem could it be some google update ?
since doesnt happen if i dont choose to update the apps
It's the Google Play Services. Download the 10.0.84 version of the APK, install it and it should work fine.
Only problem is that I cannot stop it from updating to latest version. Some say that disableing auto updates in Play Store stops it from updating, for me it doesn't work.
hi guys, i tried to download new gapps from open gapps ARM>Android 4.4>any version and flash again through TWRP ROM and gapps but before that wipe system, cache, dalvik and data.
it also does nor work
Hey guys,
I'm in the same boat. I thought there must have been an issue with an update, I was on CyanogenMod KitKat so, after wiping caches/updates/data I decided to go for a Marshmallow ROM (LineageOS). Same issue, only now it causes the setup wizard to take forever as Google Play Services keeps crashing while checking connectivity. I then jumped to a Lollipop ROM and had the same issue.
So, 3 ROMS, 3 broken Google Play Services. Do you think there will be an update to Gapps which will correct this? Or will I have to find an older version of Gapps to get functionality back? I did try removing the updated before I wiped and started again to no avail but perhaps I missed an app?

Same here.
I read a few threads where some created files to stop GPS being updated and updating the correct Google play services APK but it still kept crashing.
If anyone finds a way please post up - the xoom was handed to our young bloke and he is missing it heaps.
If not - then time to bin a perfectly good tab and get a new one - as per googles plans

If you are going where I think you are - going back to the last of the stock rom versions, it might be a good idea.

this week my son lost his galaxy tab . so i ordered a new charger for my xoom this week and its stock we have not used it in over a year , and we have the same issue almost all apps crash .
Same issue with Xoom Stingray (4G) running stock Jelly Bean. Hadn't used it for over a year after Chrome stopped working in 2015 after some Google security update. Decided to get it out of storage to try to flash KitKat on it to see if that helped and after I updated the stock Jelly Bean, none of the Google apps worked any more - this includes Gmail, Hangouts, Drive, Maps, etc. Note that during the mass update, I kept getting a popup to update Google Play services. Once I updated Play services, that's when the Xoom started acting up. At this point I can get Pandora to run but the system is slower than hell and keeps crashing any of these Google apps when I go to start them. What a bummer, I have a few HD docks which sounded so good for playing my music. Plus I used it as my portable "beater" as I wasn't worried about it getting a little dirty. Drats on Google for killing my precious Xoom. I still marvel at it's capabilities 7 years after it was designed.
Motorola Xoom 10.1" Wifi MZ604 Crashing
Hi I had the very same problems with crashing, after putting on a later Jelly Bean, so I went back to a total stock ROM, as it had
when it left Motorola, then let it update its self back up to 4.1.2 is the latest you get from Google with all Apps working fine
this is what I did, you this link for a guide, http://*ndroidforums.com/threads/return-your-xoom-to-stock.653230/

Solved
hi,
i have 2 motorola xoom, wingray and everest. 2 xoom didn't work at he same time.
i solved this problem for the moment.
The problem is in services of google, launcher, Maps 9.45 and play store.
You need a ROM with ROOT.
GAPPS "before 01/01/2017"
https://github.com/opengapps/arm/releases/download/20161230/open_gapps-arm-4.4-nano-20161230.zip
Titanium Backup and Maps APK.
I flashed EOS ROM and the OPENGAPPS NANO in the EVEREST.
Don't turn on wifi. After install, install titanium backup and go to > Menu > Market > Delete links market.
Menu > Market > Market Doctor.
Select all except:
Services of google play
Play Store
Google services framework
When finish, go to copy/Restore > select launcher3, push and separate from the market.
Install Maps 9.46.
Well done! Xoom runs with all services and ok!:laugh:
Dear sinver44:
What version of Titanium Backup are you using. My version 6.0.1-389 doesn't seem to have the same settings as you described. Thanks
Hi yoshkapundrick,
My version of titanium is 7.6!
It does not work for me
I cannot delete the three google applications with titanium, because I deselect them and when I go back to the menu they appear as selected again. What can I do?
Thank you.
able to get working
Even without root, if you unupdate hangouts & maps and then undo autoupdate in the google play store. Then everything seems to work fine.

hi,
i have 2 motorola xoom, wingray and everest. 2 xoom didn't work at he same time.
i solved this problem for the moment.
The problem is in services of google, launcher, Maps 9.45 and play store.
You need a ROM with ROOT.
GAPPS "before 01/01/2017"
https://github.com/opengapps/arm/releases/download/20161230/open_gapps-arm-4.4-nano-20161230.zip
Titanium Backup and Maps APK.
I flashed EOS ROM and the OPENGAPPS NANO in the EVEREST.
Don't turn on wifi. After install, install titanium backup and go to > Menu > Market > Delete links market.
Menu > Market > Market Doctor.
Select all except:
Services of google play
Play Store
Google services framework
When finish, go to copy/Restore > select launcher3, push and separate from the market.
Install Maps 9.46.

"Device location for apps is turned off" message when I turn off location services

"Device location for apps is turned off" message when I turn off location services
"No location access, device location for all apps is turned off, and you may not be able to locate your device if its lost"
Every time I turn off location services I get this in a pop up, and its annoying and I'm wondering if there is a way to prevent this?
Thanks
Same here, solution? ='(
Hello,
The same for me... Is it a new problem, since it doesn't seem to have a lot of result when I google it ?
I just saw that, but I don't understand, they're talking about a beta program for google play store ?!
https://www.reddit.com/r/GalaxyS6/comments/60loyq/no_location_access/
I never subscribed a beta program on the play store...
And what did you do to have this message ? It appeared without doing anything, or not ?
For me, I flashed my Galaxy S4 with a new ROM (AOSP 6), with open gapps pico from 1st april. I was on stock ROM before (Android 5).

When you tried with old gapps, you just flashed the gapps, or it was with a clean install of the rom ?
I noticed open gapps from 25 march until 02 aprilwere the same, but the 24/03 were differents in size.
I tried just flashing 24 but no difference...
And do you understand this story of beta ?

This is upsetting. People who want privacy are being nagged. I'm in the same boat as well. I like to keep location off except when I need it. Is there a xposed or magisk module that could be crafted to make this go away?

I asked for such a solution already as well: https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-3t/help/location-access-t3584764/page2
I google already for a couple of days. The issue is already reported in a couple android forums. But no solution so far....
Getting it as well on a older V10 running clean debloated 5.1.1 and my other V10 running 6.0.1 debloated fresh install.
My only guess is the new updated Google Play store is doing it (or other automagically updated google app)
1) Settings -> General -> Location -> Google Location History
2) You can turn this totally off, or you can selectively turn it off by device.
3) Reboot
4) Profit
If you lose your phone, Google won't be able to find it for you. But if you typically turn off GPS, this is probably assumed anyway.

It worked for me. After reboot I enabled location history back, and it still works as expected.

Hello,
For me it has been like that for a long time, and it didn't work...
But since a few days, without changing anything, I can't see this popup anymore.
Perhaps a Google Play Services update ? Google realized the popup was a stupid idea... :silly:
