digitizer or LCD screen. - Motorola Photon Q 4G LTE

So my photon Q is rather old. Shocking I'm sure. Recently the screen has started behaving very oddly. Flickers, sensitivity is weird, blacks out etc..
I thought perhaps flex ribbon due to keyboard sliding and closing but now I think may be digitizer or the lcd. I"m leaning towards digitizer becasue when it does work it looks perfectly clear. But there will be the one time i push the power to check if I have anything and nothing happens. Reset it and can see the screen wants to do something but can't decide what. Reset over and over and eventually boots up fine.
Digitizer?
Thanks for any info.

Anybody able to chime in

Flickering screen can't have anything to do with the digitizer. The digitizer is just there for input.
It could be that the connector is a bit loose on the mainboard. The way the Photon is designed I wouldn't think it's the ribbon. I could be, but very unlikely. Anyway it's worth looking into the connectors and just to be sure the ribbon as well. But that would take a full dismantle. The connector is just 5 minutes work.
Next time try booting into recovery. If that goes well (and regular boot not) i'm pretty sure it's a hardware problem (GPU).

When boot in any mode Ican't see anything.. A fading circle of grey lines runs vertically down the front. Sometimes after many reboots it fixes itself though. Good to know not digitizer. So take apart and check ribbon and maybe replace LCD likely?

I wonder if it is possible to simply replace the LCD if it's defective or if you have to replace the whole LCD-digitizer-speaker-etc set (which is expensive).

I ordered a replacement lcd screen so will find out. I also ordered the digitizer and flex cable.

So i'm thinking it may be more hardware involved than screen inolved. When it does work everything is usable and it works fine. This is only about 10% of the time at this point. Otherwise it boots up to show some vertical lines traveling down the middle of the screen but only in a circle in the middle of the screen that fades as it gets close to the edges. I'll try taking apart tomorrow night to see if ribbon and what not looks ok. But so far i've invested about $70 into parts and i'm thinkin about just snagging an S5 for $100. I will miss the keyboard though although I can hope that like the s3 and s4, the s5 will get a keyboard attachment. Thoughts?

If I remember correctly the LCD comes with the ribbon and camera connected. The digitizer is connected via a ribbon to a board in the top of the front panel. You could try to disable the pin. When the phone doesn't seem to work, reboot and try calling yourself. If it rings, there's something wrong with the screen and not the phone.
If there was something seriously wrong with the phone, it wouldn't boot. But that's just me guessing/assuming.
My daughter's Photon has had a digitzer replacement twice. And it looks like it's been used to play football. But that one still rocks. No quirks or any strange behavior for that matter.
What I'm trying to say is that the Photon is a decent piece of hardware. A family of four, we all have a Photon. Three of which have had their digitizer replaced and one an LCD (scratched it when replacing digitizer).
I swapped my Razr HD for an Z2. It was time for a new corporate phone. So that, and the camera, is the reason why I went for a Z2. My options were 930/G3/S5/Z2. S5 is not my cup of tea. The G3 has no ruggedness whatsoever. The 930, apart from WP maybe I should have went for it.
So it came down to the Z2. To be honest I'm looking to trade it when the Z3 compact arrives. We'll see.
@Loader009
Digitizer is a part, board for speaker is a part, the speaker itself is a part (adhesive, watch out, btw 100% the same as Droid4), and the LCD is a part on it's own.

Going to open up my phone tonight after work. I was bored and was just playing with the keyboard sliding it open and closed a bunch and now the screen looks perfectly clear.. although sometimes it will still black out and I have to reboot it a few times to get it back. I feel its more a connection inside like you stated earlier. I love my Photon and really don't want to have to get a non slider phone. New phone's are so friggin huge lol.

The good thing is, the PQ has gotten pretty cheap, so you might want to get a used one at ebay if the part to replace is too expensive.

flickering screen (backlight) is not lcd problem.
for 70% is it problem on mainboard - backlight ic. This problem is caused by using unoriginal charger.
and 30% flex problem

I had my screen become un-responsive etc, it was due to a crack in the ribbon. Swapped it out & all ok.
Easier to swap the whole screen assy than to change the ribbon, but depends on what spares you have/can get.
You'd need to have a good look at the ribbon for any damage.

Cracked Screen on my Touch Pro

I dropped my touch pro and cracked the screen in a few places. I think it works normally except for the screen, as it receives calls fine...
A new phone isn't in my budget right now. Does anyone know of a good place (hopefully in DC, MD or VA) that will supply or install a replacement touch screen?
(btw, no recent threads came up when I searched.)
Ebay!
Just looked, $30 including postage for a screen & digitiser if you are able to do it yourself.
How hard is it to replace a screen if it has surface damage? Is there anywhere i could find a walkthrough or help?
Shame man, its a tragedy of what happened to your phone...
Luckily its not too bad, and you may just be able to fix it. You can download the service manual for the phone here: http://htcwinmobile.blogspot.com/2009/03/htc-raphaeltouch-pro-service-manual.html
Just a note though, make sure you DO USE tweezers or something to get the speaker wires out of the way before snapping the enclosure back into position... I had to reopen the phone again, after powering it, to rejoin one of the little wires thats like a tenth of a millimeter thick DO NOT IGNORE ANYTHING THEY TELL YOU IN THE MANUAL. Oh, and what works well for the "plastic removal tool" is a cut out piece of plastic ice cream container. AGIAN, do not ignore anything in there... You are voiding the warranty permanently when you do it yourself (which you unfortunately have to).
Anyways, good luck!
I drop my phone also, but the screen didn't actually cracked! but I do have is problems with the screen in other ways! Sometimes I get a black screen when I turn on the phone and sometimes not, but when the screen turns on, it flickers a lot and have lines thru it. What suprises me is that sometimes I get perfect images on the screen (Which makes me think that the screen it's not damaged).
Any suggestion would be apreciated. Thanks!
3 days and still no answer from anyone! I would like someone to throw me ligth on this issue. I'm waiting for this to know exactly what I need to buy, before I start assuming things.
Thanks in advance!

Sounds like the LCD connector may have come unseated. You could open up the phone and make sure all connectors are firmly seated if you feel confident in your abilities.

Thanks for the advice! I was thinking on that also and wanted to take my chances opening the phone (oh god!).
BTW, I saw the $30 LCD Screen+Digitizer combo on ebay that Beeble referred to, but I'm not sure if it fits on the fuze (my model). What have come to my mind it's to buy also the front camera of the phone (like a thread on the kaiser) to mod the cell, in case I need to buy the screen+digitizer. I've search all threads about this issue but nobody has done it because it was too expensive for the result; I believe with this price it's worth it right now!
solved
Try this steps:

I used Diamod (!) LCD and Touch Pro digitiser. Works perfect.
Much more cheaper
If your screen works fine sometimes, you most likely don't need to replace it. there's probably just a loose connection somewhere. If you really want to replace it though, there's an ebay seller with a really good deal. $20 for the screen and digitizer already glued into a new front body piece: http://cgi.ebay.com/OEM-HTC-FUZE-LC...wItemQQptZPDA_Accessories?hash=item3ef8817bf6 That one's for the fuze, but I think the seller has other models too. I'd definitely get the LCD and digitizer together or else you might end up like I did on my first attempt: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=584050

WOW! What a long way to get to the screen. Good luck for everyone who tries to dismount and mount the Raphael.

Thanks for the advise maxh,
I just wanted to let you know that a miracle just happened! my cellphone started to work just fine without even opening the phone! it has more than a week on this situation so I believe that it's exactly what you stated (the LCD conector became unseated or loose). Since it's still working, I have no need to open it! so I'll just wait until it becomes defective again and at that point just open it and tight up the LCD connector!
Anyway, I would love if somebody could make the mod that I was refereing to before (changing the screen of the fuze by the touch pro one) and see if it's possible to attach the front camera on the fuze.
Once again, thanks everybody for your opinions.
I got my new display+ digitizer on Ebay (65$) and replaced it, using the russian link mentioned above ( follow the exact procedure) , it took me 2 hours to do it, and after lot of patience it worked! My problem was the digitizer never worked fine, and after replaced it it worked like never before. If You are not familiar with repairs, it will be a mistake and waste of money to buy a display without digitizer. NOW, I have a small problem, my display has a NEW color, it's like color temp is WARM for this display, and COLD for my old display, AND COLOR level is lower, and the result is display without vivid colors, black like gray. Is there any way to change the DISPLAY color settings?

[Q] Touch pro 2 digitizer replacement few questions

Well i bought the TP2 digitizer and it has a hole in the front of it (whoops), Will this work fine with my sprint phone? Looks like the right size and same connector as other.
here is the discription from ebay item (It wont let me link the exact item) USA DIGITIZER SCREEN FOR HTC Touch Pro 2 2nd Gen T7373
I am planning on operating tonight and little worried, ( some people say ebay digitizers dont work well)
Also i need to disassemble to little bits or maybe just take the housing off the front (ive seen both ways on youtube and with out full disassemble looks hard.
Thanks for any input
lots of people look no one relies
Well took it all apart everything went great untill the f***ing digitizer and lcd would not come out i finally got it out and noticed tiny crack on the lcd part so looks like i need new lcd too.. I plugged lcd back in 2 ribbons back into mobo and plugged battery hit the power (it vibrates and turns on but nothing shows on lcd) Should it not show anything on lcd if everything isnt plugged in? (didnt bother plugging in the antenna plug the digitizer *(waiting for new lcd to plug that in) or the ear piece plug but i thought id at least be able to see the broken lcd light up. Am i wrong or did i mess more than the lcd up possibly?
I kinda expected to break the lcd when taking it out it was so hard.. another 25$ down drain but then again the lcd might have been cracked already not sure. I just hope it works with the new lcd. can i test the new lcd with it taken apart?
there is a guy on ebay selling a brand new replacement front for the TP2. it comes with
everything except the motherboard and back cover. i bought one from him for 70 and
took my motherboard and placed it in the new unit and used my old rear cover. works
like a charm and looks brand new.
well i see the gsm model for 25$ screen and all connected.. But since it seems like no one that repairs them replies (prob to old of a phone) I dont know if it will work, it looks like they all have same connectors so i dont see why the gsm screen would matter.. mIght take the chance and buy one those too to check it out, waiting on a new lcd to put back together to see if this one even works after my disassemble. (im guessing it will i didnt really damage anything but the lcd) 70 sounds like wya to much
yeah $70 was a bit much but it was basically a new TP2 minus the motherboard.
I don't know if the AT&T version will work with the sprint version tho. May want to
do a little more research on this before putting out that Dough.

[Q] Touch unresponsive at #456 on phone

Picked up this phone from CL. The person was claiming that part of the screen is not responding to touch.
I have seen it when I picked it up, but I thought that I will deal with it when I get home.
I was keep playing with the phone almost everything it's working on it except the volume buttons and that horizontal line where the #456 is on the dial pad.
I have removed the battery and noticed that the white sticker it was pink, water damage.
Now I don't know what could be the damage here? There is a shadow across the screen also, but it's not a crack.
I have seen this before on a digital camera, it was the aluminum sheet metal under the LCD, had a smudge across on that aluminum finish too.
Couldn't remove it though. Replaced the screen on the camera and it was as new.
Not sure what could be the problem with the phone?
Should I replace the digitizer, since the LCD shows everything correctly? It could be something shorted internally? I have the phone apart, but I don't see anything wrong. Cleaned all the contact with electronic cleaner, no change.
Any help would be appreciated.
Please post all questions in the Q & A section. Thanks! Thread moved.

I think I would replace the LCD and digitizer as a unit. The slightly higher cost would be easier to accept than having to do it more than once, which would probably end up costing more. Either way is a gamble, though, because that might not be the issue.
Volume buttons are notorious on this phone. I have not known or read about someone fixing them. You can get around the problem for the most part by using software to control the volume, using roms that will restart to recovery or boot loader, and the occasional use of ADB commands, but some bootloop situations require the hardware to work.
Good luck with your project and let us know how it works out.
Not just a pretty Pickle.
I'm thinking of buying the whole LCD as a unit, but that is why I'm asking that maybe somebody could tell me if it's the LCD or other hardware.
The volume button it's together with the upper camera board and I guess it has to be replaced together.

[Q] Touchscreen and Capacitive buttons not working. Good digitizer/screen

Got a couple of spare Shifts lying around that each had a separate problem.
On one the screen wouldnt come on at all, but the digitizer worked. Took it apart and noticed alot of wear on the ribbon. So the screen wont turn on but the digitizer and capacitive buttons register.
On the other the screen came on but the digitizer and capacitive buttons wouldnt respond unless the screen was slightly slid up at the top. So took apart and found the ribbon is actually split across and folded on one side. Funny how it actually worked until I put it back together. Now sliding it doesnt work either.
Tried swapping ribbons on each of the devices, issues remain. I did eventually get the split/folded ribbon to register a touch response ONCE since the swap, but not sure if it just wigged out on me for a minute.
So is there any kind of mix/match thing I can do to try and Frankenstein these phones to work?
FYI: both phones are RUU'd back to stock
To me it seems that both need new flex cables. I think you could just get new flex cables through Amazon. They're about $17 and ship directly from China.
I agree with Chad, it sounds like the Flex Cables are done. You may want to take his advice. But just be forewarned, make sure if you go with Ebay that the seller has good feedback. Also make sure to wear gloves whenever working on Devices, ground the work surface, and yourself. Static is not your friend .
oh dont worry, my shop is quite well equipped for anti-static and safety for both me and the devices i work on ^_^ i have been to ebay and found a worthwhile contributor for flex cables. thanks for the input guys. i still have NO IDEA how the split cable was even functioning. i feel as though if i had never decided to investigate the initial issue i would have been fine.
if anybody would like the two devices in their condition you may make me a small offer. not that im trying to really sell them off as i would like to have them as spares in case for whatever reason my working one decides to crap out and i have extra parts until i do get a flex cable. would be nice to have one on hand anyway. the cable in my current device is perfectly fine, but they do have a tendency to wear out especially since this one is quite used.
the one that originally had the split cable is in beautiful condition with hardly any scuffs or scratches on the digitizer. the other has a fine split on the right side of the digitizer, but it doesnt obscure its use. my current one is cricKet flashed with a similar split on the left of the digitizer. funnily enough it has 3g service but cant make calls or send texts outside of Pinger which is awesome because that means i still have contact outside of my home. it actually had working 4g until i obtained S-Off. now itll connect to 4g but wont actually send or receive any data.
Well keep us posted on how it goes. When you do decide to repair them.

HTC Sensation death after Digitizer replacement

Hello,
Touch screen glass was broken, due to my phone fallen on the ground. The LCD was still working perfectly so i've ordered a new genuine digitizer for my HTC Z710E.
After replacing it my GSM does nothing . When charging i see the charging light lighting up in red or either green when full, but besides that i won't do anything. I disassemblied the phone again twice, reconnect all the connectors and still nothing. Sometimes my phone vibrates and sometimes when i push the power button the charging light disappears but that are the only signs of living.
Is this a common failure after replacing the digitizer? Did i overlook something?
Hopefully you guys can help me out.
Thanks in advance!
If the LCD ribbon cable is, in fact, getting a good connection then I would probably lean towards the lcd itself having been damaged during the install. Due to the construction of the sensation, it can be difficult removing the lcd without damaging it even for an experienced tech like myself.
What I would suggest would be to go ahead and order a new lcd. This would also be a good time to double check that the part number on the new digitizer's ribbon cable matches that of the broken digitizer you removed, as the incorrect part will lag when the screen is turned on at best and will not work at all at worst. As far as I know, the sensation and kindle fire are the only devices like this where you will have slightly different parts even within the same model and region.
