It's my understanding that some phones (like Motorola Photon 4G, my second phone) actually protect the phone call... audio stream? ...in order to avoid legal liability. But I'm wondering if we can do it on our M8's.
Not sure if you've heard, but the Internet really, really does not like Comcast, provider of cable TV service to a large portion of the United States (though, fortunately not here). Reddit is no exception. And a guy posted on Reddit today (or maybe yesterday) that Comcast tried to stick him with over $100 in fraudulent fees, and he was only able to get them reversed by producing a recording of a call in which a Comcast rep told him they would do outside repair work for free. They even confirmed that, without that recording, the customer would have been stuck with the bill.
Like anything else, you should know your rights. 38 states are what is known as "One-party consent" or "Single party consent" states. This means that in these states, if you make a recording, it's legal because you consented. The other party doesn't even have to know. Two-party consent, how the other 12 states do it, means both parties must be aware. If you are called by, or you call a business and they declare that they are recording, you have the right to record as well. By staying on the line, you give consent, and they already have by declaring the recording, so both parties are free to record. Most businesses use the generic, "This call may be monitored for quality purposes." Despite the vague 'monitored' word, they're declaring that they are recording, and you're consenting by staying on the line. [Source] (Disclaimer: I am not a lawyer. I am not your lawyer.)
That being said... I live in the state of North Carolina; thus, any call I record is legal as I have consented to being recorded by pressing the record button, or by using an app that does so automatically.
I've tried about 3-4 apps, and none of them actually record a call. I'm not sure if their actual intended purpose is indeed to record, or just to deliver ads... But they certainly don't record.
I have the Xposed module Xsense which adds on-demand call recording (menu, Start Recording from call screen) but all it records is the person using the phone, not the other line... which is kind of the point.
The call recording app should support Bluetooth... It should be recording the call stream as it comes into and out of the phone, not what it can pick up from the speaker. That's sloppy.
I generally only deal with honest companies, when I can help it... I use CenturyLink for internet and they've always been good to me. But my wife wants details, like I can recite the entire call verbatim. I think if I email her a few call recordings, she'll stop asking. I joke, but it's a serious inquiry. It's good to note things like confirmation numbers, as well as details one might forget. One can simply take notes, but a voice recording is so much better, especially if there's a dispute as to what is said.
It just seems like something that would be good to have. Maybe not in stock ROMs. I can see that. But anything custom? Yeah, flip the switch on. Like disabling the camera shutter sound. You know where that's illegal? Japan. Couple years ago it was a big deal. All the custom ROMs would warn you it might be illegal. But if you're not in Japan, it's perfectly legal to silence your shutter. It's still not legal to take pictures up skirts and down blouses, which was the root issue in Japan that prompted the law, or to take pictures in bedrooms or bathrooms without consent, but disabling the shutter sound? Not a problem. (Again, I'm not a lawyer, and not your lawyer.)
Anyway... anybody able to do it on the M8?

Is there is no call recorder for Android 2.1?
In Total Recall there's the message that it doesn't work on 2.1 sadly.
Is there no way to get it work on our Nexus?
Especially on a rooted one I thought this might work.
Where does is depend on?
Hope someone can help
Do you have the Full version of that app?
Yes I have, but they write in the description that it doens't work on 2.1
And Ultimate Voice Recorder didn't work, too.
you're right Ultimate voice doesnt work....hhmmm
This recorder works and its free.
Get a hold of the developer, seems like he needs to work on his app more
Yes but this is a voice recorder and not a call recorder
Voice recording works, but no call recording that's the problem.
i'm looking for such an app too.
Looking for a call recorder too, no progress so far.
"Total Recall" Looks good, but that's not compatible with Android 2.1
Yea I'd like a call recorder too, and not a voice recorder.
For those that don't know,
Voice recorder = only records your voice
Call recorder = records BOTH sides of the conversation.
There is apparently a hardware issue that prevents true call stream access by apps on (at least) the first generation android phones. They added an api to choose the call stream as the recording source in 1.5 but it wouldn't work properly on the hardware we had available then. There are bug reports on google's page code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=2117. I don't know if anyone has put serious effort into working with this api on the n1 or if it is even possible hardware wise, it probably wouldn't be a bad issue to bring up in the dev forum.
I had made this thread in dev forum but it was first closed and then moved here and reopended, because it hasn't to do anything with development they told me.
So we hope somebody reads here and maybe can help
I don't think they allow app requests per-se in the dev forum but a question about the function of those apis might garner some response. Maybe cyanogen or one of the other devs who works with the kernel source would have some idea if there are issues with the api not being fully implemented or driver support.
How bout Voice?
phone recorder works well, but there's no on/off toggle that I can see, so when you've installed it records every call.
That´s really too bad, I miss a call recorder ..had that on my last device and this saved me some troubles
Use Google Voice. Record while in your calls with just the push of a button. Simple and easy.
vRecorder has worked fine for me

I just set it up...how/where is the feature?
Edit:
Calls: Recording phone calls
To record your call, simply press 4. You can do it when you first accept a call, or any time after it's started. To stop the recording, press 4 again or hang up.
Your recordings are saved online and you can access them just like you do with voicemail.
Note: at this time you can only record calls you receive on your Google Voice number. You can't record calls you initiate using our Click2Call from our website or the Return Call feature from your voicemail.
There are different laws that apply to call recording, so check your current state and Federal laws before using this feature. To assist in the compliance of these laws, we provide an automated verbal announcement when call recording has been initiated and when it has been stopped.

Recording a call with out notifying the other party is HIGHLY illegal FYI. I believe when you record with Google Voice it notifies both parties that the call is being recorded. Just a heads up! >;]
That being said, I always wanted a telemarketer to say "this call will be recorded for quality and assurance purposes" to which I reply: "yes, and I too shall record this call for humorous potential YouTube purposes, is that ok?"
hahaha

Illegal??? yeah whatever, sue me lol
As for telemarketers.........since i have place my number on the call-registry, i don't get them
Although, i might start calling them.......and if you say both parties are informed, i can survey them LMAO
Since there is a temptation to use open wifi sources with our phones, I was wondering if there is a firewall program that can protect the phone from the network it is connected to?
Also, does there exist a good call recorder program? Particularly one that you can set to record automatically based on caller id. I.e. if a call comes in (or is made) from a particular phone number as soon as the call is connected the recording starts.
Short answer no & no.
Unfortunately call recording in general sucks. I've only heard of apps that work with speaker phone. I'm told it's an os level design decision.

Yeah, could you imagine the problems if phone companies allowed anyone to record voice conversations.
I was about to argue with you and then I realized what you did. Nice.
I've tried EVERY telephone call recording software on the market for my Rooted evo4g, the best I've ever gotten was barealy audible quality from the person on the other end, my voice fine.
I've heard conflicting info whether the problem is hardware or software, apparently overseas an android has an option every time you make a call to record it or not.
Is there any solution to clearly and loudly record (legally of course) a telephone conversation ?
Apparently I gather it's three files that are missing from the US version that prevents this.
Is it possible?

Hi,
I'm trying to figure what options there are for robust call recording apps on rooted Pixel 3's.
I'd like to know if a specific call recording application functions on Andriod Pie (or later) after rooting the device.
Here's the app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.appstar.callrecorder&hl=en_US
If those running a rooted OP6T would install the app and make a few calls I'd appreciate it.
Here's a number to Health and Human Services Office of Civil Right (all prerecorded menus; we won't bother anyone) to do test calls: (800) 368-1019
You may need to do some basic setup. Make sure call recording occurs automatically, or allow the overlay and manually engage the call recording.
For those willing to go to some effort, if at first the app doesn't work, the "Recording Settings" can be tweaked.
I don't know what the difference is between methods, other than that they change how the app tries to get voice data to record.
Can you hear both yourself and the the caller in the recording?
What recording settings were used?
What format did the recording save to (AAC/MP3/Wav?)
What is the sound quality of the recording?
Do any of the above change if you plug in a USB-C earbud/microphone or earbud/microphone attached via USB-C to 3.5mm/TRRS.
(note: bluetooth headsets have compatibility issues even on phones the app works; headset would need to be wired for this test, though info on Bluetooth would be nice if one is so inclined to provide it)
In the applications inbox for recordings, does the number or contact information show up, or is it listed only as "outgoing" or "incoming" call.
Alternatively, I'd be interested in any information/experiences rooted users may have with other call recording software. Such as Another Call Recorder - Unchained (https://labs.xda-developers.com/store/app/com.nll.acr). In particular, reliability and call recording quality (as good as 'the call').

I am not going to do all of that, but Boldbeast (paid) is probably your best bet for a nice high quality recording but it requires a bunch of tweaking on a pixel running android 10.
I had absolutely 0 issues using it with my P3 on android 9, but once upgraded to android 10 the only way to get it to work (even with a magisk module they recommended) means losing your "Hey Google" and "Now Playing" auto-detect music feature within the OS (both which I like). So its either stick with Android 9 and have 0 issues, or upgrade to Android 10 and deal with a bunch of BS trying to get the Boldbeast app recorder to work. Google in android 10 is trying to block anyone from using a call recorder all together, they just want it this way. So, I digress.
My previous phone running Android 8 (which I use as a backup) has the app you listed, "Automatic Call Recorder PRO" (paid version obviously) and functions like a dream but its not my daily driver.
If I ultimately had to record a phone call, I swap my sim into that phone and have a nice WAV/MP3 file saved in the cloud.
TLDR; I have no real answer for you
Supposedly Google is adding call recording into their phone app. I have not seen it yet.

"With Google Voice, you press a button to start recording the call and then a voice comes on and announces that the call is being recorded. Everybody can hear the voice, so everyone knows that the call is being recorded."
The whole point to using a recorder app is so that someone doesn't know they are being recorded (this is legal is certain states, such as mine).
With an announcement "You are being recorded" kind of defeats the whole purpose. Unless maybe you are trying to keep questionable people honest over the phone with a .mp3 file/proof.
Maybe a Magisk/root hack would be able to turn off this message if google so-chooses to embed it that into the app.

That's my conundrum as well. Legal for me to record. Moreover it's better to have an app automatically record all calls, and be able to organize them into a database with call notes to keep track of who and when. Half of my want to find a way to continue using the existing call recording app, is to preserve the existing database.

Right, that would not be legal in my state.
So if you live in a country in which it's not supported you don't have the option.
But I would like it, english will do Just fine as I talk English anyway when I pick up the phone.
Is it correct that the option availability is based on the sim origin (country)? If thats the case chances are slim to find a way around it.
Tried most things, like usa vpn, clear cache & data phone app, uninstalled phone update, updated. Nothing changes.
I'd be guessing no as Google say it depends on SIM.

I just did some research on this subject, there are two options:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.realnetworks.kontxt.voice
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ru.yukhlin.answeringmachine&hl=en_US&gl=US
#2 unfortunately requires some additional hardware and #1 will most likely have a terrible privacy policy
no root - cube acr
root - there are a lot of options in the forum
Thank you all for help, yes Root opens doors, but I live so remote that if I brick it I have big problem (would be without a phone for 6 weeks).
Cube acr I could try but feature not interesting enough for me to let other alien application handle it. Maybe interesting for other people.
I'm kinda annoyed with google treating us different, they just could release it everywhere but just limited to english or whatever. Same with call recording, it's legal in some countries like Netherlands but they find it more easy just to cancel it for whole europe? Why just not release it everywhere, if it is illegal to use (like crossing a red light) just don't do/use it. It's also illegal to scam people with phone, prank call cops etc etc... but yet possible to do with a phone. Which bright mind made it illegal anyway? Ridiculous, so many times companies told me lies on the phone to sell their products. And we can't prove it, on the other side they are allowed to record the call, which I understand with a contract being discussed. It should be a fair playground with each party being able to record.
The only reason I can understand why it is illegal is that this is politicians greatest fear, being recorded and that their crooked way of working is on tape and useable in court.
call recording is available without root, https://callrecorder.skvalex.com is a great solution I use it on grapheneos no root.
Does A13 still allow call recording thru Cube ACR? If not is there a way to switch dialers without root?
If you are a root user you can install GoogleDialerMod, just search it on Github. I activated call screening and call recording in Ecuador, that app is amazing.
