[Q] App Backup on Rooted N5 - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a rooted N5 (Tnx to this forum for that) but now i need to do hard reset, i just want to backup data from 3 games (savegames), i dont care about app settings, i just want to save muy progress and restore after, i search in google but all I found was all android backup or all app backup, so muy question is if posible to backup ONLY those savegames (with or without their app settings, is the same) and if is, how to do it and restore after? Tnx un advance

lots of games now feature game saves, through google play games(app/service). as well as a few have you log into your facebook and/or google account to save your game status.

I know that but games like card wars and "enredos en el tiempo" (didnt know english name for this one, cartoon network is the developer) didnt have cloud, the progress is in device only, thats why i make this thread

well, i dont know of any other way to save games, only if the game maker makes a way. root wont help you.

Titanium with external data setting should work for all games. Why you purposely don't want to backup the game settings makes no sense.

I didnt know if is more dificult to save all or only save the savegame, thats why i say that i dont care about settings, i will search more about titanium backup but if some one have an other solution would be nice to learn it too

Sry for double post but i found that if i copy data/data/app.packpage.name and restore it should be enough to save the progress, is that true?
Also found that titanium backup can restore data only but it save app + data always so if copy data/data really work, would be awesome, if not i will use titanium

Why not do both. Then when you go to restore try each one at a time to see which one works. FTR I'm pretty sure the files on the SD Card is game save. But better safe then sorry

She games save data there. Others use /sdcard. Titanium would capture both if "external data' is set.

[Q] Backup save games and settings

Hey,
I play a lot of games on my phone (Galaxy S) and I was looking for a back up tool to back up my save games of the few games I play (MiniSquadrion,........)
Thanks.
Titanium backup should do the job. Otherwise you could do a nandroid backup once in a while.
What the OP is asking is a method to 'specifically' backup saved games not the entire phone or Apps, etc.
I don't know of a backup tool that targets saved games.
If you know the folder where the saved game is stored you could copy this to either your MicroSD card or PC.
Does Titanum back up the games and the savegames?

It backups app and data, you can choose to only backup Data though.
That would include Saves and Settings and stuff like that.

No, as stated it backs up parts of your data but does not target saved games.
Also, Titanium requires root.
I personally use My Backup Pro which allows you to backup either all your Apps or data such as contacts, SMS, photos, etc.
Thread moved to General.
Look in the game's installation folder. I know that Tower defense (for instance) creates a save file which you can back up and copy over at anytime.

So my backup pro does back up the save games with the games them self right?

Technically yes but like Titanium, My Backup Pro can not be told to backup a specific game save folder.
To do that it's much simpler to copy the contents of a folder containing your saved game data and paste it on either your MicroSD card or onto a PC.
If however you wish to backup an Application be that a game with all it's contents then yes, both Titanium and My Backup Pro will do that.
Just remember Titanium requires Root access.
Another backup tool is Sprite Mobile for Android which is more commonly found on windows mobile but has now broken grounds into Android.
Both Sprite & My Backup Pro are paid Apps.
Ok thanks for the suggestions:
1. MyBackup Pro - when I click BACKUP I have 2 options: 1.Applications 2.Data .. So which one of them should I choose in order to backup the game and the save games (data etc.)
2. Titanum - which option from the Batch I have to choose in order to back up a game with their save game?
Thanks

In the spirit of ensuring the facts are accurate I contacted the developer to ascertain the level of backup and am glad I did.
I have been informed MyBackup Pro does backup applications along with saved game data BUT ONLY on those that have integrated with Reware to allow their applications along with all data to be backed up.
For other applications due to the security in Android it is not possible to backup application data.
This is news to me as I was led to believe it backed up all application and data for all the Apps.
I'm asking for further clarification because when you opt to select to backup your Apps it lists all Apps.
In the meantime it would appear Titanium is the only possible method BUT this requires Root access.
I've had a look at what Titanium backs up and it lists as follows:-
* All the applications you have installed, included protected ones,
* All the data and settings of these applications,
* Most (or all) of your phone's settings and data.
* NOTE: It will not backup the system applications from your ROM. Only their settings will be backed up.
My apologies for the confusion and to members shoemeistah & ante0 who recommended Titanium or gave guidance.
I was led to believe not only would you require Root (which I am still correct in saying) but you could not target specific save data (which I'm still unsure of).
You may also like to have a read of this which shows the level you have to go to achieve a backup.
Wow Beards impressive help there, Thanks a lot for all those detailed replies.
Well I'll go with Titanum even if it requires root..
Thanks again Beards.

can a nandroid backup saves games and game-saves? i remember something like this happened when i had the Nexus S (now i have GS3) 1 year ago! but maybe i'm confusing :S

What are the benefit of titanium backup

Hello to all, i am new android user and i have a good time with my device. I have one very very silly question.
What are the benefit of titanium backup?
Im very confuse to use it. It only has backup and restore function.
Some of my question in regarding to TB are....
1. Do this also backup whole gameloft games means apk info + sd data?
2. Why all write, must app for root phone?
3. Major advantages?
Please tell me ur experience
Sent from my GT-I9003 using XDA App
One major advantage is to have your files backed up as if you wanted to change from rom to another without bricking or losing everything on your phone
It's an easier way of restoring apps and/or data if you change ROMs or the like. I've not had as much success with it as I would like. Since ROMs are often very different, restoring does not always play well with others. Give it a whirl, you may like what you find.
If i backup any gameloft game then it just make small backup file where game is very large in size. So how to backup gameloft gzmes?
Sent from my GT-I9003
it also has the capability of freezing or uninstalling bloatware apps. not to mention that it backs up contacts, and text messages. it allows you to backup your entire system settings and apps and all the info for all the apps.
It is a verryyy useful app. especially if you are switching roms like the guy above said ^^

and as far as I know it backs up any and all apps. So I imagine it will backup "Gameloft Games" apps as well. It doesnt pick and choose which apps to backup and which ones not to backup(although you should do that manually) it automatically will backup all apps and data if you tell it to.
if you use MiUi rooms it`s prefer use MiUi backup it`s much better titanium back up <free mode> is abit complaining not marking back up and...
As far as I know it only backs up the apk and your settings/save data. For the bigger files which you download after such as a gameloft game you will probably have to redownload the file.

Gmail widget fix

I had the same problem as many with the missing gmail widget. Here is how I fixed it:
Apps / Settings / Privacy / Factory data reset
PLEASE NOTE this makes your tablet as if it was brand new outta box so please backup any data you don't wanna lose. Everything took me about 10 minutes to get setup again and the gmail widget is now listed under widgets and working once again. Market synced all my installed apps from market back automatically.

Does that action delete/ format your files in the TF? How about the files on my SD card?
Rio
It wipes everything off the TF and what your left with is a brand new 3.1 installation. It didn't touch my microsd cards data. I know this is not an ideal solution for the power users out there but it may help out some until Asus issues a fix.
Deletes data off the internal storage, but not the sd card.

it's called backing up your data and reinstalling your apps. It's a very common thing to do.
download app list backup from the market, that will give you market links for all of your installed apps, and you can download mybackup pro to backup some data.
and BTW, to everyone doing this, backup your internal memory becuase it will be erased as well to my understanding.
going to go ahead and do this when i get home tonight.
Fyi by default Google backs up your app data. So it should automatically redownload the apps you had and have all your settings. Unless of course you pirated them, at which point you're not allowed to complain
The backup/sync option is meant to only restore ones you purchased via the market, not free ones. Although honestly, it's restored a few of the free ones (not all) I've installed too, the last time I reset, so I'm not sure what to think any more.

Note that it does not restore app data. You need root for that and Titanium Backup and if you have root there are other ways to get the widget back. Any save states (ie. completed levels in Angry Birds etc..) will be lost. Any settings and such as well. I'm not saying don't do it, but just getting that out there for those that don't know. 'Restore' is really the wrong word for this, it's just re-installing so you don't have to.
Sounds like they've changed their policy then if it's restoring all apps now. That's certainly welcome news.

Exactly why I said factory reset is an unacceptable solution.
Titanium backup or backup pro isn't a solution because it requires root to backup app data, but if you have root you could force install Gmail widget directly without factory reseting in the first place
It is an issue to factory restore things, because there is no way to back up app data without root.
For example, playing games on your tablet, there is no way to recover that saved file unless there is root
Thats why I believe, factory resetting is the last resort resolution and really isn't a fix..
And they always make rooting so difficult, but obtaining app data to restore later or just to backup is the best part of root

Still no way to root 4.0.4 without losing data?

Every previous version could be rooted without losing data but it seems nexus S cant be after the latest update. I have so many games it would be so sad to lose all my scores and saved progress. So what are we supposed to do?
Back up with Ti Backup and restore app+data?
You can root without loosing data if you already have the bootloader unlocked. If not, do as the upper post said, Titanium backup and backup apk+data
But I thought titanium backup doesnt work for non-rooted phone??
My bootloader is locked.

That won't work. /data is not accessible without root permission. Some games have data stored on the sdcard, many do not. Until something is released (if it ever will be, considering the ease of rooting a nexus s), you don't really have options to keep your saves.

Oh lol, nevermind, forgot about that. Then i guess you're pretty much out of luck...
Like Harbb said, backup the SD since some games save the games in the SD card (like gameloft games) and the rest is lost.

Ah. Read it wrong. Probably shouldn't be drinking and giving advice. Haha.
This may be worth a try since you're pretty much out of luck saving your data with a locked bootloader. In the Settings, go to Backup & Reset, tick the checkbox "Back up my data" which I think will back up your apps data and other settings to your Google account. Be sure to tick the "Automatic restore" checkbox too. I would wait a while (maybe at least a day or so) for it to back up your apps data to Google servers. When you re-install the app from the PlayStore using the same Google account, I think it will restore your apps data. I never tried this before. If it works, awesome. Maybe try it out by uninstalling a small app with user data, then install it again to see if the data is restored.
Does not restore app data like your game stats etc.

U can't restore from its location (they have it backed up as some files that can be read by titanium backup only)
Just install titanium backup from play store after you do the data reset. Then go to the app and restore
Ps - the folder must be on external SD card. As wiping data is gonna wipe internal memory too and u ll lose the backup.
Titaniumbackup folder in internal sd folder or you choose it from settings. You cant restore them manually because as somebody said above they are archived in someway only titanium backup reads them.
I'm not trying to restore them manually.
My goal is to be able to go into Titanium and be able to see my backed up downloaded apps, and only my backed up downloaded apps. I did back them up, there are 20 of them. But, when I go into Batch>Restore I see no area where there are only 20 apps. When I tap run I'm faced with all the other system apps, that I backed up, and I need to uncheck the ones I don't want to.
I find this aspect of Titanium Backup very confusing.
It's like trying to shoot pool with a rope.
James
You need to set filter on Backup/Restore tab to show only User applications. Tap on "Click to edit filters" label.
Have no idea what's wrong with Titanium, now. When I go into Batch it showing 0 for every category. Seems Titanium has no idea I have any apps?? If I filter for all I get the list of my apps but there's a triangle icon with an exclamation on it on every app, system and user.
I don't get it.
Triangle means that there are no backups yet for selected apps
Something was wrong with Titanium Backup.
I uninstalled it and reinstalled it now it's and no it's finding the backups that I had already made. Including my 21 downloaded apps that I backed up. They show in the restore, now, in the User aps.
All is well,
James
Remember you will always have them in google play store (my apps section) assuming they were downloaded from google play store.
I always/frequently send my backups to cloud storage.. for any unforeseen circumstances I lose my apps, then I can at anytime grab them from my cloud..

This is what I'm trying to avoid. I'm trying to restore these apps without having to depend upon Google or Cloud. I have turned off syncing with Google. I guess I'm a bit paranoid.
Any way. I uninstalled and reinstalled Titanium Backup and got my apps restored. Problem is it restored some apps I no longer use but must have backed them up in the past.
Will these User backups be in the TitaniumBackup folder? If so, and I delete all the backups there and do another users app backup this eill remove the apps I don't I\use and hence they wont be restored??
These might seem like dumb questions but I'm new to this stuff.

I still don't get it!
In the Backup section of Batch... one item is "Backup all user apps" (17 user apps)
I then ran it successfully.
Now, shouldn't there be an item in the Restore section "Restore all user apps" with a total of 17 apps??
There is none.
Now, I realize I'm new to this stuff but Can anyone suggest another backup app. 'cause I believe Titanium Backup sucks.
And apparently one here has any solutions.
You're correct in stating that user apps should also show in the restore section..
In the main overview screen do all user apps show.? And do they have yellow icon next to them showing they have been backed up..
If you have pro version with unlock key, email dev/support with your problem..
To be honest with you and most xda users will agree that TB is one there most stable, reliable & one of the most needed root app..
Try using (ROM Toolbox pro/free) as good as if not better, you'll love the user interface ..
Sent from my blazing SGS I9000 using Tapatalk 2
All my user apps show up. 2 of them have a yellow smiley face next to them. All the other have green and yellow icon with what I believe to be a face. I have backed up all my user apps at least twice today hoping to see these in the restore area. I checked again and now they're there! The user apps are now showing up ion the Restore. Why they weren't there all day and all of a sudden pop up I don't know. It's not that I needed a reboot 'cause I did that right after backing up.
Maybe I should scan my phone for a virus.
I'm sorry 'bout putting the product down, it's just very frustrating. It's not the product it's me. Some of this stuff is over my head.
I'll check out your suggestion for the backup app.
I did, however find a couple of apps that seem pretty good:
App Backup and Restore
App Quarantine to freeze apps.
I have no desire to flash a new rom (if that' the proper term)
I simply want it easy to backup and restore my user apps and the freeze some apps I don't use.
Freezing can be done very easily with TB..
But once you get to good with this app, trust me it will be yet most valuable need app for you

I am kinda having this problem
I have a similiar problem. But with mine is I changed the ext back up folder to a specific one, but for whatever reason titanium saves back ups to the default folder where i have other back ups.
but when i look at my apps itll say 0 bakups because the new folder i chose is empty. even though it saved them in the old folder for whatever reason.
When i switch it back to the default folder then itll recognize that i have the new backups. even though i didnt tell it to save them there.
This is what I wanted to know:
Internal storage\storage\emulated\legacy\TitaniumBackup
Is where app backups are saved.
