[Q] Razr Maxx HD (9.18 Verizon) - RAZR HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm sunk everyone... It had been acting very buggy, I'm off contract so I thought I'd give rooting a shot. Well... I think the rooting worked but I was getting a system ui error. So, okay I'll try to flash a rom.
So here I sit with a razor HD stuck in bootloop and I have no idea if it can be fixed. I am sorry for probably double posting. But I am desperate. I don't have the cash for a phone outright, and if I upgrade through Verizon I lose my unlimited data. Any help I can get I would appreciate.
I can get to "AP Fastboot" and what not. It is a "locked boot loader" if that matters.
What do I do? Where do I go?
Thanks in advance!!!
PD

If your boot loader is locked, you can't flash a ROM, that's probably why you're getting a boot loop. You'll need to use RSD, the utility in the Development forum, or House of Moto to flash the stock firmware.

Boot loader is locked.
I've tried to use RSD Lite but my device never shows up.
I've also tried HouseofMoto and it doesn't work.
Somewhere I'm missing something important and I'm not sure what. I know that when I started it was 9.18.94. I can't find the same firmware anywhere. I've tried every firmware I can find. All the way up to 9.183.
I've also tried to update my moto drivers. But I'm not giving my credit card to some download site that I've never heard of, and every other thing that comes up under a google search for "Motorola USB Drivers" is some kind of PC scanning utility that also wants money. Where can I just get the drivers I need and not give some random website all my information?
Thanks,
Perry

Go here to get your phone back to stock KK which will then allow you to unlock your bootloader.
http://www.droidrzr.com/index.php/topic/46155-rootunlock-442-182183-razr-hdm-only/
It has links to help you fix your XT926 so it can be ready to unlock the bootloader. (The RAZR HD xt926 link in the OP is what you want). Follow those instructions first to get you back to stock KK 4.4.2.
Then, follow the rest to root (using Towelroot) and then unlock your bootloader (using Motopocalypse) and then you'll be able to flash custom ROMs.

in this guide there is the correct driver link. no spam or money required. you can follow the other instructions there to fix your phone (doesnt require rsd but you do need the correct drivers) or you can use samurihl's method, also linked there.

I keep reading "back to stock KK". I wasn't on KK, does that matter?

no, just follow the guide and you will be fine. unless you dont want to be on KK. then you will need to follow the entire guide to get back to jb.
if you dont want to do that, i can provide an alternate utility that will keep you on jb and locked. just let me know.

btw, reading back, im not sure exactly what you tried to cause this issue, but you cant flash a rom with a locked bootloader unless you use safe strap. it doesnt matter now, but thought you might want to know that for help on what you do now after you fix the phone, like unlocking the booloader.

Restore to stock

I have a rooted droid mini with pwnmymoto. How can I factory reset it? Using the option under privacy, it just reboots the phone. Doesn't matter whether I keep root or not, just need to get it wiped.
I would also like to know how to fix this for the future. I currently dont need to but my recovery is messed up and i only installed it shortly than removed it as I decided I dont think i need root this time around as the stock rom runs great.
I too have been looking for steps to wipe and return to stock. I think I disabled too many pre-installed apps and now sometimes Chrome won't open properly when clicking on links. I see the factory reset option under settings, but was too nervous to try that because I couldn't find anything on the net about if the internal storage is wiped. Not trying to lose all pics and such. For the Maxx to be a couple of months old I expected more when searching Google.

Factory reset doesn't actually seem to work....
My understanding is that pwnmymoto hijacks the stock recovery, which is used when you do a factory reset. If you can figure out how to obtain and flash the stock recovery in fastboot then the factory reset would probably work. Though, if you're going that far, you should probably just restore to stock entirely.
This guide should help, and this thread can point you to a place to find the stock firmware.
What about for the Mini?
you can easily return to stock, use RSD Lite computer program, just search it...or i can try upload it. After you get that app, make sure you have 7zip or something similar...after that, go to this site here > http://sbf.droid-developers.org/
there is a guide here but i may not be able to actually post...i am going to so i can help people who don't know how to return to stock...so, here it is

Just used this guide from the Moto-X forums last night. Worked perfectly.

This is the link to the fastboot file for the MAXX as well.

[Q] Deleted build.prop, now I'm bricked!

GAH! So how screwed am I? I can't even get into recovery. I'm non-dev, bootloader unlocked and rooted. I was going to restore the tether hack in order to take the new OTA. I accidentally deleted build.prop and rebooted.
I can't get into recover at all holding down volume down + PWR. I only get the unlocked bootloader warning and that is it. Phone shuts down. Since the phone is essentially off, my PC never recognizes it to allow me to use RSD.
Any thoughts, ideas, suggestions?
Thanks!

Wow, I'm an idiot!! Can't believe I did that. So, I downloaded the 4.4.4 21.11.21 ZIP and I used fastboot/mfastboot to flash the boot images and system image. I stopped and didn't erase my data because this is the exact version I'm running, only the build.prop is missing. This did the trick.
In order to help anyone else in a similar jam, I will try to post links to where I downloaded and the forum page with the instructions I followed, but they're on my laptop so I'll have to do it later.
Big sigh of relief... I've never seen an android device of mine in that bad state before!
Thanks for your input!

[Q] Flashing bootloader locked Cricket Moto G/LTE to retail firmware

I want to flash my Cricket Moto G (xt1045) 4.4.4 to the retail 4.4.4 version for a few reasons. Mainly to get access to tethering and the chance that I will be able to update to Lollipop since my hope of cricket releasing the update is fading.
I've been searching around and cannot find a definite answer to this. Lots of people say it should work but I have yet to find anyone who successfully did so. Some say to flash all files but the bootloader and it should be good while others say being the official Motorola firmware everything will flash without a problem.
Has anyone took the plunge and tried it? I would, but I really don't want to be stuck with my Lumia 520 backup phone if I screw something up. Thanks!

Is that the page? His instructions and ROM download seem to be for a XT1068, not a XT1045. Did you find the ROM files for a 1045 somewhere? I'd like to get access to wifi tethering, too...
Yes, that is the page. I'm assuming the software install would be the same for all models in the Moto G group. The ROM files are located in a thread on here titled "Moto G 4G/LTE Stock Firmware (XT1039/40/42/45)"

Link for those looking for it.
Thanks for the link. Maybe I will give this a try, I'm buying an android stereo for my car and need wifi tethering to run the GPS.
If you wind up trying it before I do, let us know! This would theoretically only update the ROM, we'd still be stuck with a locked bootloader, right? If we could find a 4.4.2 ROM, then the Sunshine S-off unlock would work, and we'd be set.

No problem. I will report back if I try, you do the same if you beat me to it! Yes, the bootloader would still be locked, but the software should install since it is an official Motorola signed software. I think I recall reading somewhere that flashing to 4.4.2 would not allow unlocking through sunshine though.

macgi , I gave this a try last night and the results were extremely not good. Wasn't able to flash the retail firmware, got a bunch of "prevalidation flash failed" on some items, but not others, and then it wouldn't boot. Tried to reflash the cricket firmware to revert back, and got the same prevalidation error for the boot image and the partition gpt.bat file, and now I can't get past the fastboot screen.

I'm assuming you tried using the link above? Or did you try flashing each individual file and skipping the bootloader file which was talked about in the firmware thread? (I believe it was around pages 20-30 if I recall)
Found it
@JoeSyr, maybe I'm missing something here specific to Moto G LTE, but flashing a firmware image does not require an unlocked Bootloader. I would do it manually, skip most of the steps, and only flash the system.img initially.
mfastboot flash system system.img_sparsechunk1
mfastboot flash system system.img_sparsechunk2
mfastboot flash system system.img_sparsechunk3
The only way you can get into serious trouble would by flashing the motoboot.img (Bootloader) and phone no longer loads fastboot mode. But even then, is there not a hardbrick mbm-ci recovery option for Moto G 4G

I tried running the ROM Install.bat file the guy put together in the first page you/I linked to, which did attempt to flash the bootloader. It sounds like this person you're quoting is saying the flash should be operational even just flashing those three chunks of the system image file? I think those files wrote okay, but it still didn't boot. Problem might be with this other partition file i mentioned.

no, haven't really gotten a chance to mess with it, yet. I popped my sim card into an old samsung galaxy Blaze I had laying around as a backup, and I've been getting by with that for the time being. I tried flashing with some more tools, different firmwares, and different combinations of commands, no luck.
I found a guy in the stock firmware thread that had the exact same problem as me, and has the same cid as my phone, cid 10, which no one else seems to have. They think it might be why the preflash validation failed.
Other users suggested that if a cricket lollipop firmware image is developed at some point in the future, that would be able to flash without error. I reached out to the user to see if he ever resolved it, but didn't get a response.
Anyway, the sense that I got is that my problems were because my cid didn't match. Is yours cid 10 as well? you can check from adb. If it's not, you might be fine attempting it.
It's been a while since I checked, but I believe it is cid 10 as well. Now just hoping cricket releases Lollipop soon.....
The lollipop release for the retail (non carrier) version just came out OTA yesterday, apparently, so hopefully Cricket is not too far behind...Though it will probably take a while to go from an OTA update to a downloadable firmware image.
I contacted Motorola tech support today, they said they would replace the phone for $75 + taxes (flashing firmware via adb fastboot voids the warranty, of course), and told me it wouldn't have the Cricket firmware on it, so worst case, i would be gaining tethering ability, best case, they might send me a variant (xt1039?) that is capable of being rooted and installing a custom ROM in addition to tether. I'll probably take this option if I'm not able to get it working once the lollipop xt1045 firmware file shows up.
That's not a bad deal. Hopefully you can get it working when lollipop comes out though. Thanks for the update!

Don't Re-Lock Your Bootloader

As a friendly reminder to those unfamiliar with unlocking/re-locking their bootloaders;
Unless your on 100% stock, and planning on reselling your phone, don't re-lock the bootloader.
For some reason re-locking the bootloader while you have a custom ROM installed will cause the phone not to boot (in a way, soft bricking it.)
And, leave "OEM unlocking" in the "Developer Options" CHECKED, once that is unchecked you cannot unlock the phone once a soft brick happens.
The official advice from Essential about re-locking your phone is ONLY for the official firmware. Pretend they never said that on their site, it has caused more trouble then necessary. It's even dangerous to re-lock while running the Oreo beta.
Concerning un-bricking the device, at the moment there is no known way.
And it will be this way until someone figures out a way to exploit the bootloader or reverse engineer it.
So please don't flood this thread with asking for help to un-brick your device, I nor anyone else can help you on that at this given time, all I'm doing is trying to is prevent that happening.
So, safe unlocking! And happy holidays!
EDITS:
1) According to some reports, when you lock your bootloader it will also automatically untoggle the "OEM Unlocking" option.
2) It appears when re-locking the phone on a non-stock ROM some partitions are becoming corrupt, and resulting in the "red boot warning" screen. Under most circumstances you can fix that screen, but not while the bootloader is locked (since you need the fastboot flash command.)
3) When the partitions become corrupt you cannot boot into any mode, including the stock recovery. This is why Essential's suggestions are pointless at this stage of the brick.

totally agree, i made this "trick" with one of my first android phone and it never happen me again. But new user who would flash Los or other rom should be aware of this issue, specially when jtag is not an option. As far we'll make some powerfull 500$ brick :crying:. it's our duty to make people aware of this. @invisiblek you guy made an incredible work and so fast but like he said i think you should warn people of the risk in the OP

I wouldn't even know how to go about to ask to pin this.
But besides this I'm also thinking about making a thread for new users regarding common issues when installing roms at our current stage.
I'm firejackal on discord, I'm just trying to reduce the amount of people asking the same questions on there and to prevent bricked units.

Wish I saw this earlier, my phone is already bricked few weeks ago after re-lock the boot loader. When I ask Essential support for help, they said this in the email:
"Hi Eric,
I can appreciate your concern if the device is not able to be used.
I am sorry though, we are not able to provide support for ADB or issues that you will run into with sideloading builds. We have no remote tools that will recover the device.
Although I haven't run into that same error, you might still be able to re-flash the Oreo/production build again using ADB.
I would recommend following the Oreo Beta sideload instructions available on Essential.com/developer that will walk you through the process of getting the device recognized and communicating with ADB. There are also instructions for re-flashing the current build available here. If you are still running into issues, I would recommend visiting online forums like XDA for assistance from other developers for that issue that you are noticing.
Thank you for your understanding.

That sounds like a generic reply since it's not mentioning anything about the brick.
But I have a question regarding this; when you use the locked bootloader to boot into the stock recovery to try to sideload an official signed image, what does it do? Does it give an error, or is not able to connect to the computer?

I'm not able to boot in to stock recovery any more, it gives this error when I try recovery "Your device is corrupted. It can't be trusted and will not boot". I think that was because I rooted and installed TWRY before.
Now with locked bootloader, I can't get in to recovery and I can't flash TWRY either. I can't unlock bootloader too because I'm not able to boot so not able to enable USB-DEBUG and OEM-UNLOCK.
I tried pretty much everything and no luck at this point, I don't know what else I can do.

You have bricked your phone.
Locking the bootloader with non-factory ROM causes secure boot to fail.
An unlocked bootloader doesn't care about secure boot.
If the ROM images is not signed there isn't a problem unless you have a locked bootloader.
The one thing I don't understand is why relook the BL anyway?
You have TWRP installed so you already can't take an OTA.

I bought the phone for about 2 weeks, then there was a promotion that buy phone give camera 360 for free with Sprint, so I was thinking about return this and buy again to get the free stuff. To return it I have to get it back to stock, so I factory reset my phone and try to re-lock boot loader without thinking. Turns out I didn't get the free camera and bricked my phone too, perfect example of "NOTHING IS FREE":good:

FDR is not "back to stock".
You must to a full flash to get back to stock.
I updated the top post with some additional information.
Also, if anyone is to contact Essential I wouldn't recommend mentioning that you tried to install custom ROMs, that's just walking into a mess like if you mentioned that to any other phone company.
I would instead say that you tried to install [their] oreo beta, went to re-lock the phone and your presented with a corruption message and unable to do anything including their instructions. Because installing their oreo beta does not void your warranty.

Well, to install their Oreo beta builds you don't need to unlock the bootloader.
It's an adb side load through stock recovery
I could also mention on their stock build page it wants you to unlock the bootloader to manually update through the bootloader. But on the oreo beta page it mentions nothing about having to be unlocked, or locked to do it via the stock recovery. So the average user could presume they need to be unlocked.

Am I'm safe to re-lock if I'm on stock rooted 7.1.1 NMK24B? I have a dead pixel and I need to send it back.

If you are rooted, you are not stock.
The boot image is modified.
Locking will brick the phone.
You must be completely stock!! No root. Nothing.

Thanks for clearing that up. If I have any more questions before returning to stock, I will ask here first.

Was not trying to be harsh but it can't be stressed enough that you must be completely stock to lock the boot loader and not have issues.
I wouldn't lock the BL on a side loaded beta.
Only lock if you have done a complete flash of stock, released firmware, immediately after the install.
I might be sounding like an alarmist but I don't want anyone to brick their phone.

I just got an ota notification for OPM1. 180104.092. think I'll be safe I I take it, then factory reset and then lock? Because I can't seem to locate stock NMK24B to flash. Maybe I'm not looking hard enough .

Question Desperately need assistance

Hello everyone, I desperately need assistance because I think I may have soft bricked my work provided SM-A536B/DS.
What I tried to do initially is to install TWRP so I unlocked the bootloader successfully. Then, I saw different posts here on XDA where people have successfully installed cust ROMs so i tried to do that. This is when the problems started...
Right now my phone is bricked, I assume it is a soft brick because I can still get it to download mode. I did some research prior writing here, and everyone is mentioning to flash the stock ROM. That does not work.
Right now, the phone has bootloader unlocked: (Screen1)
It is asking me to lock it, so that means it's already unlocked.
Tried to access TWRP but I cannot since I get this screen when I do vol up + power: (Screen 2)
My phone was bought in Europe. I am not entirely sure whick ROM is the right one. Is there a way to check which is the right one to download? There are multiple ROMs I can download for Europe: (Screen3)
My country is not in the list so i downloaded the 2 generic for Europe. I put my phone in download mode: (Screen4)
However Odin fails everytime, no matter what files I add: (Screen5), (Screen6)
Since TWRP is not working, I locked the bootloader again to see if I could get Samsung bootloader to show up. I think i might have deleted it somehow, because I get the same thing as before when i do vol up + power. And as you can see, the bootloader is not locked: (Screen7)
I am now stuck and screwed, because this is my work phone. Any help is greatly appreciated.

This is why it's a bad idea to screw with work provided devices. You don't own the phone, and you will be held financially responsible for it if it's damaged or broken.
You're trying to flash the wrong firmware. You have G925F selected; your device is an A536B. The latest firmware for your device is A536BXXU4BVL2. Use Frija to download the latest firmware.
Since this is a work owned device, the only advice I will offer is this: Return the phone to stock with the correct software, re-lock the bootloader, and do not attempt to modify it as it is most likely in violation of your company's technology acceptable use policy.

Yes, this is what I am trying to do, to return to stock ROM. I downloaded A536BXXU4BVL2 for my phone, not G925F (this is what Odin uses as an example).

What version of Odin are you using?
Your bootloader is still unlocked, correct?
If you're unable to reflash the OEM firmware in Odin, I don't think there's anything else that can be done.
To be completely honest with you, I'm not sure trying to help you is worth the effort, because you did something you shouldn't be doing anyway, and any consequences you may face are entirely of your own doing.

Yes, i know I did something bad and I learned my lesson.
I'm using Odin 3.14 and indeed, bootloader is still unlocked. I really appreciate the help!

I haven't touched any of the options, everything is on default.
While reading this post something popped in my head.
I dont have this phone, but a Xiaomi Mi8.
When I want to adb push or sideload stuff into phone while it is in recovery or download mode, certain usb ports will work and others wont. And there is not a clear error when it's plugged to non-working usb port, just fails in the middle of a transfer with a generic error message.
Maybe totally irrelevant, just wanted to share.
