bootloader will never be unlocked via dan, here is why - Droid Ultra Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

The problem everyone is failing to understand is dan just won the lottery. forget these silly petty bounties. think how deep Verizon or Att and etc. pockets are. a busted bootloader is a big deal to these companies, so handing dan say ... 100 mil in shut up money is petty cash to them, let alone patching against the future is waaay worth it to them. they may even think they scammed dan. so as aerosmith would but it... dream on; im not sure when we will see another all american legit bootloader hack.

This is hilarious. 100 mil huh? Apparently jcase, Adam Outler, etc are billionaires with all the devices they've hacked. Great thread op.

I think it is more a moral thing. I know of so many that have come and gone that ARE great devs and helped us all out from either a simple theme to an unlock tool that have $h!t on from so many that believe they are entitled to it. No "thanks", " I understand ", " my mistake ", " I should have read more ", no nothing but complaints about this out that. Some of them are parents. Do they treat their kids this way? No wonder why there is so much hate in the world, greed and it isn't fair attitude.
One day if it's not already happened these guys are gonna disappear off all the public forums and goto private forums they are invite only members if they are not already there.
Then what blame the guy who just switched from the iPhone to Android for not having all the answers? Sure he will trade it in for the new iPhone before his 14 days are up

Im sorry, I didnt mean to make this sound like a joke topic or even ill hearted against dan, I was simply stating the facts from my sources. I can confirm though that my team and I are working on a bootloader unlock tool that will actually get released to the public sooner rather then later, we are also looking into bl's including but not limited to samsung s5, is all I can say about that for now.
also plz note our team absolutely takes no donations, and donate to no charities period. we simply do not believe in these things. thank you.

What a ridiculous op if you want us to take your follow up seriously!!

i guess there are trolls at xda...? not sure which post i chuckled more at.

since when is stating facts and explaining what our team is doing underside bridge work? we all saw what happened and we are all working on exploits, and I hope I encourage many others to do the same as your shouldnt hold ur breath for dan to release it. I hope we are first to produce a public tool. I've just joined this forum to expand our teams horizons.

People Flogging the Unlocker

Well guys... I got the full details of the main bloke mass-selling the unlocker in the UK... so, anyone out there with advice on the move to make next... or anyone who'd like to help?
I wish you good luck Olipro, it's very anoying that someone is mass selling your work
Unlocker
I unlocked my device using your tool and it was successful without any issues... unfortunately (or fortunately (dunno)); I'm not living in the UK but I would like to help thou if I can
just give your sign man
Burn the bleeder!!!!
Olipro.
I'd like to think i speak for all.....
The amount of time you and others have spent is outstanding... and you do so for the community for free.
Having some guy take this "free for personal use utility" and sell it.. amounts to ... lets say... theft... and well deserved for a good kickin.
I know that ebay will take action to stop anyone selling a product if there is a copyright infringement. .. don't know if that is a path...
But.. Branding the utilities.. and basically making it clearly written that it is not ALLOWED to SELL... and if they purchased it.. please contact the seller for a refund.. will make it a real pain in the backside...
As for existing on sale products.... I'd put adds in totally copying the listing.. and making it free!!! or charge a penny... including the line...
"why pay XYZ £x.xx for this unlocker.. when you can buy it now for a penny.. (or we can make it less than the other seller....) and make the payments all go to the actual developers paypal donations account!!!
???
I'm happy to do it.. (i have an ebay account i really don't mind burning...)
PM me and we can do this...
Wasted effort.
You guys could probably find something far more productive to do with your time than wasting effort on someone who is selling something that was given away for free.
Just like Monster (like redbull) has been running around, giving away cans of their product. Anyone who wants to can sell those cans to anyone who is willing to pay for them. There's nothing wrong with that, either.
That isn't to say, I don't appreciate your efforts Olipro, I do. But frankly, even if you charged for it, I would pay you because it's worth it to me. Without a second thought as to how you came about it, whether you wrote it.
I simply couldn't care less--neither do any of this guy's buyers. Why should they?
actually, i was aiming for a settlement, but if that's not forthcoming then I'll lodge a claim.

what kinda help you looking for? I'm willing to help you, just let me know what you need
If it is only one (or a few) bloke you have a strong case.
I don't know wether I can be of any help as I am living in Holland.
As Olipro has already admitted he cannot copyright or licence this as he has hacked the AMSS.
"Yes folks... the one you've been waiting for... finally managed to get the patched AMSS to boot... a nice big "up your arse" to Qualcomm."
A hacker cannot licence anything they hack as it is someone elses work in the first place. He is also using a patched Radio rom. This Radio rom is HTC property, and as such he cannot licence that.
These threads are getting very boring, it is about time Olipro got a life, and stopped crying about it.
Tinman
^ ouch did he really just do that?
Yeah he did. Only problem with his statement would be if he used Olipro's HardSPL at ANY TIME in the past or present for ANY DEVICE that he wanted to flash a cooked ROM to. Pot calling the bong green? Let's find out...
(insert sarcasm) Hey Tinman, ever flash a cooked ROM onto an HTC device before?
*sigh* Seriously... I support Oli's "right to fair trade". He along with many others developed the tools *we all* use to make our phones as customized as we can make them (big props to you Oli; HardSPL v1 for the Kaiser is on point!), and some pond water scum (he did say it was a bloke, right?) is selling his FREE programs?! Yeah, I'd be looking to "settle" as well. So don't jump down *his* throat saying he needs to get a life. Try the word "hobby", since for most of us that's all it is, and I'm sure cooking, flashing and ROM development is a hobby for him as well.
Oli, you've got support here in the states, especially with us AT&Tingular folks. Keep up the good work, and if you find the fool(s) behind this, shove one of those Cricket paddles in his arse for us! Or at least reach some sort of agreement...
It was Des who first made a hacked spl, Pof then took it a stage further, Olipro's is based on those. So again not his work.
Tinman.

That is the stupidest example I have ever heard. This is more like someone taking redbull and selling redbull as their own brand, not a different one because they did nothing other than copy the EXACT software, ass.

The stupidest example you've ever heard, eh? "Well, no offense, lady, but what you don't know could fill a warehouse." --Bart Simpson.
If you buy a can of redbull, or if redbull gives you the can for free, you DO have the right to sell that exact can. Or as many of them as you wish.
You do not have the right to claim the brand as your own, but you do have the right to sell the item. These ROMs, unlockers, bits o' software, et cetera are no different.
The seller cannot claim that he has a copyright on them, or that he wrote them but he is perfectly within his rights to sell them whether anyone likes it or not. Rest assured, he can and will still sell them w/o claiming that he wrote them.

Hey, wouldn't it be grand if HTC, and AT&T and all the other guys that own these ROMs, et cetera, sent thugs to send all of the cookers here into the Rio Grande swimming face down? You know, because it "amounts to ... lets say... theft... and well deserved for a good kickin."
Oh, wait, you don't want that? Why is that, do you think?
Maybe those corporations could all just file suit against these guys? Would that be better?
Or would it be better that, like they do now, they just tacitly accept this stuff and generally ignore it?
i think the only thing you can do is sell your unlocker at a low price and add in one thing that most of the other sellers wont probably do. Give exact help. What better for a buyer to see is that they are buying the item from the creator.
Unfortuanatly there is no legal way to stop these other sellers and as long as good guys like yourself give us free brilliant programs your gonna get the odd ar*ehole thats gonna make money off it.
And to thoughs who ***** about how oli, why read his thread why use his program. God sake if your smart enough create your own program, and i hope you get someone that goes and sells your program and see how you like it!

What are you 12? This is nearly incoherent.
No one is saying Oli and the rest can't do what they do, or that other people cannot use their tools. They're saying that once you release something to someone else--you lose control over it, be that some software you hacked, some can of redbull, a used car, or anything else. I love what they do, I pay them for it, and I would even if they charged for it. That doesn't mean that they can control what others do with it.
Yeah, um haxx0rz rulz lol omg!

In my Oppinion that´s the Fact. We are an OPENSOURCE-Community, which should get the best out of our Devices, regardless if you cook up a ROM using this and that...
Were not at the Kindergarden!
Opensource is, and should always be, free to use for everybody in every Way.
Ugh. Really? Why is there drama in the development thread. We are all so irritated by the newbies that create new threads in this subforum just to ask a question, but I think it's worse to do that, when you have been here long enough to know better, just to argue about pointless drama. Maybe King copied and pasted an entire ROM, maybe not. Whatever. We should fight about it amongst ourselves... not all over a section designated for getting work done.
This whole argument about him taking money is ridiculous.

Really he is apologizing and trying to fix the situation and you guys want to chew him up and spit him out. Wow!!! King has done a lot for the Android Community. And I will be willing to sit down in a Gtalk or whatever to get down to the bottom of this so this community can get back to the way it was. I have been around a while and have seen what this community can do, just like anything there are good times and there are bad times. You get over the bad times so you can start having good times again.
Everybody just needs to Build A Bridge And Get Over It!!!!!
Just in case anybody needed a reminder:
Open-source software (OSS) is computer software that is available in source code form for which the source code and certain other rights normally reserved for copyright holders are provided under a software license that permits users to study, change, and improve the software. Open source licenses often meet the requirements of the Open Source Definition. Some open source software is available within the public domain. Open source software is very often developed in a public, collaborative manner. Open-source software is the most prominent example of open-source development and often compared to (technically defined) user-generated content or (legally defined) open content movements. The term open-source software originated as part of a marketing campaign for free software. A report by Standish Group states that adoption of open-source software models has resulted in savings of about $60 billion per year to consumers.
But I do agree give credit where credit is do. Ok that is all I am going to say on this. King I am willing to sit in and hear your side of the story.

Who gives a ****?
Some people make roms, others use roms. It's all open source. Quit getting your panties in a bunch. There is nothing imature about an argument, however arguing with people on the internet...get over it. To everyone, everyone sounds like some ****** 10 year old.
Grow up, and stop posting in this thread like anyone gives a ****. Now go ahead, call me a ****, child, loser, idiot, moron, nin-come-poop, whatever helps you get over the fact this is a useless thread, and you're all wasting your time here. Don't even bother to respond to me, I won't read it. Just stop bringing up stupid drama. This isn't high school....
Long live Android.
This whole battle has been played out before....eg Haykuro....king has learned what others before him have also. Just has writers value giving credit where written words are concerned, so too do developers value the credited code. People, perhaps rightly so, are very sensitive to this phenomenon. Just be very careful and double cite if you have to...
Peace be amongst us...

I did finally find the thread, catching up now. I wouldn't be surprised if there's a trade in offer of some kind involved. Just speculation on my part tho. of course, after the reception he received here we probably won't hear anything now..

He's a marketing rep for Samsung, and I think was honestly trying to find a way to reach out to the XDA community. And in return, everyone ripped his thread to pieces.

I respectfully disagree with your position, but if we want this discussion to remain open lets avoid name calling and flaming

I agree. The way I see it, we have nothing to lose. They already have our money. Why not let the guy say his piece? Is there anything he can possibly say that will sway our opinion without doing something about the problems? Is he going to hypnotize us into buying more Samsung products?

With all due respect. Samsung has brought the hatred and anger on themselves. They choose to enter into agreements where they cant comment on the updates they provide. They choose to enter into agreements where they cant update their own hardware without the carriers blessing. They choose to allow their PR reps make comments about updates that never come dangling a carrot in front of those hopeful for the advanced features others on identical hardware in other countries enjoy.
Sorry they burned their bridges, they doused their customers with gasoline, you cant blame us for wanting to embrace them with our last fiery breaths.
Ok guys if this turns into a flame fest or name calling i will close this one as well. I am not sure what will happen if anything other then empty promises as like stated above "they already have our money." To be honest This will be my last Samsung device I ever own. No matter What Samsung has to say, I will never again promote a Samsung device, as I had big hopes for the Captivate. I should have known better after all the work I have had to do on their other smartphones, that this one would be just as much a POS as all the others, BJ, BJ II, Epic, Jack.

I agree.
But when fortune turns in your favor, what's the best thing to do?
Continue the outrage and anger (justifiable as it may be) or turn the other cheek and see if something constructive can't be done?

Its not about the Money Money Money..

Personally, I'd never send my phone to anyone. I'd say thats a reasonable charge for the service, but what if he bricks it? Better yet, what if he KEEPS it?

Well, he's just offering a service. I don't see why we should blame him. I'm the kind of hacker interested in tweaking my phone. I'm sure other people don't care.
In other field (cooking for example), I'm sure I'd be considered as a lazy bastard. I bet many people around here are in the exact same situation.
In economics, we call that preferences and we take those as data, we don't judge them. Let them be free.

The problem is he is making money off of work that is not his. This right here is the main reason developers are starting to keep things to themselfs and select freinds and not releasing it to the public.
Guys when you see something like this just report it to the site.
Meh...as long as they offer a legit service, why not?
How many times a day do you pay someone else to do something for you?

This is pretty much the same as people paying to get their PSPs, DSes, PS3s, Xboxes or anything else, hacked/modified. He's not selling the mods and roms, he's just selling his service. I feel that it's okay.
This reminds me of people who sell instructions with rooting tools or xbox, wii, psp mod files that they have found online for free but this guy isn't actually selling the free software he made sure he mentioned you are buying his services which would be rooting and hooking up the phones for lazy asses who don't want to take the few extra minutes to google the stuff they need (which I think is half the fun; getting to know about my phone and seeing it do stuff that the manufacturer says can't be done...) but anyway it's their money if they want to pay for something that can be easily done I guess that's on them. BUT I would think better of the seller if these tools he is using were developed by him instead of using the tools that other developers had put alot of time and work into and the developers themselves give it away because that's what they love to do and aren't getting a dime for all of the work they've done and then the help they freely give when answering our questions over and over for people like him to turn around and profit off of their hard work that they aren't even profiting off of. It makes me so grateful that most people are not like this seller. He really is profiting off of other people's hard work that he got for free which is totally greedy and all of that kind of stuff.
Thank you to all of our devs who put alot of time into helping us make our phones beyond awsome!
I was thinking of sending him a message and ask him which rom and tools does he use or if would he use or a screenshot for a specific phone just to be nosy.
People make money off others hard work every day. It's called Capitalism.
Don't hate because this guy is making money off of others ignorance.

Yeah well it doesn't fly here. You use the work of others and charge for it and things happen. One should never steal a hackers work lol
And a great example of why some of the greatest mods are no longer posted publicly and only shared privately between trusted developers.
As far as I know, developers usually allow such uses. I'm sure they are well aware of the possibilties offered by their licences. I personnaly use a BSD licence for most of my programs and encourage those behaviors.

No I don't personally. There is a big difference. They are not using someone else hardworking that is given away for free. There are rules you agree to when you join the site. And that includes asking to use the work of others. And no developer will allow someone to make money off of a tool they give away for free
the ONLY way i could see what he is doing as ok is if he was donating a portion of the profits to the devs of the work he uses.

This is just wrong. You should learn what free software is (not as in free beer but as in free speech).

I know what it means. Been doing this for many years. You should learn what respect is. That is what developers deserve and it is not given when you steal their free software to charge for.
In the end this has been covered many times. If someone is charging for the work of others then report them and they will be banned from here. As for other sites just report them as these devices are released with free licences charging for them is illegal.

people have no one to blame but theme selves. People chase Developers off all the time. It's part of what people do, they want, want, want, want, pressure, pressure pressure. Then if they don't get what they want, they run the developer down the wall. It has happened to many AWESOME developers here.
People need to grow up and understand that this is a hobby to most developers. It's not a source of real income, it's something to do because it's fun for them.
the end users, such as myself and everyone reading this, needs to understand that developers owe us NOTHING, and we owe them the damn respect they deserve.
I am not a developer by any means, but you'll never see me bad mouthing them, or running them down the rail. They do what they do because they love Android, and the community. But when the Community doesn't love them back, it's hard to carry on.
i completely agree.

Agreed. Ive noticed that alot of people have grown to expect and demand things...I used to be involved in another hobby that was really illegal now that i look at it in retrospect, satellite testing...people would actually cancel their subscription to legal services and demand "a fix" as if a billion dollar industry is gonna sit back and not use countermeasures to end piracy. But my point is the mindset of people demanding something that should merely be a hobby. One reason is, some are even selling these services (that they get free) that others are working hard on..it is very sad, and I am 39 yrs old, and also have noticed alot of users that are 14,15 or 16, that probably dont understand things just yet..and i am not trying to insult anyone

Oh wow that is Sad people do need to understand its a HOBBY we aren't at our computers cooking up Roms or fixing bugs on an 8hr shift they have JOBS and FAMILIES they aren't worried that people keep asking for an UPDATE or BUG fixes a week they may only put in 4hrs but its hard now to open up xda and read your forum and see people complaining 24/7 do this and do that they rather turn the computer off and play with their kids or watch tv. I really hope all nOObs and people that constantly ask for OTA
