[Q] Kernels with USB OTG support

I read about few kernels offering USB OTG support and we need a externally powered keyboard or mouse to use it. How does it work with USB flash drives? Can we access data from that or do we need externally powered flash drives for it? Sorry if the question is stupid, yesterday was the first time i knew this was even possible in nexus s
They need to be powered from somewhere else, generally through a USB Y cable of some sort. Some devices require external power AND some power from USB, and this will again require the Y cable. Quite a pain considering the negligible power needed to run a USB, but then again the Nexus S wasn't expected to have even this much functionality anyway.

[Q] Help with USB Host (OTG)

Hi All,
I'm trying to get a USB device connected to my phone (specifically an OBDII reader with Torque Pro). No matter what I do, I can't get it to recognize on my Nexus S 4g. When I run USB Host Diagnostics, it basically says it can't find anything.
I'm running a flavor of Cyanogen 10 with its stock kernal.
My questions are:
Do I need to go through a powered USB hub to get the proper power?
Do I need a specific kernel with the correct host modules enabled? (if so, can someone point me to one)
Thanks,
Torque Pro worked fine with my NS4G with a cheap ebay bluetooth adapter with no hassle. That adapter had no batteries at all, it was powered through the ALDL port on the car. I couldn't imagine needing power since no scanner I know of needs power at the ALDL port, it pulls it from the port itself. I would bet it is USB driver problems, or problems reading the USB adapter through Jellybean because of this new MTP protocol that sucks
Good to know.
Should I try a HoneyComb ROM? I guess it COULD be the OTG cable I got from amazon. Maybe it's not plugging in all the way.
thx

No Honeycomb roms for Nexus S...
I highly suggest a OBDII bluetooth adapter. They're 15$ on the net and will spare you the trouble. Make sure you find one that has good reviews, some cheap ones have problem connecting to some cars because of broken J1850 PWM (i think it's PWM, might be VPW) protocol.

[Q] Noobish Questions -> OTG and USB 3.0

Hey there,
Im aware that my question is probably noobish, but does OTG work with USB 3.0?
Im just curious due to some other devices (like my wlan-stick) not working with USB 3.0 so I just wanted to be sure.
I know that there is an app needed to get OTG working on the Nexus 5, but is an external powersource also needed just like on my Huawei Honor 2?
Thanks in Advance, sorry for wasting your time
Regards
Korn
First of all USB 3.0 is compatible downward, do this should work normally, even 3.0 itself would be supported.
An external power source? For what?
If u use a stick there can't even get a power source and if u have a floppy disk with power source, even this have to be used on OTG otherwise it won't work, too.
Hope this answers ur question?!

[Q] Working USB OTG cable?

I've now purchased THREE USB OTG straight cables (not Y) that did not work with my Shield Tablet... Is there some sort of trick i don't know about? Some special kind of OTG cable i need to buy? Some setting i need to enable for it to work?
I've tested the cables both with usb keyboard, mouse and various properly formatted USB drives - none detected at all. They dont work either with my Nexus 4 phone or Nexus 7 2012 tablet (but i suspect those models dont even support USB OTG, so doesnt say much).
Can anyone point me to a straight USB OTG cable that actually works with the tablet?
Are you running the latest OTA , Android 5.1? The OTG is broken in this version. Try plugging in the cable while tablet powered off the booting up. You won't be able to charge tablet until reboot though.

Man, I updated while traveling for 45 days!!! Loss of OTG for thumb drives, hub connection, camera image off load, wired Ethernet....what a loss!!!any word on when they will release software that at least makes it fully functional again? Plus the constant app optimization every boot cycle..I am hoping their self driving cars and self cooking ovens and make believe cities get better attention!

According to their website they expect an update by the end of the month that should fix these issues.

Charging on OTG note 5 help. :(

Hello! I am using Samsung Galaxy (SM N920S) * Note 5 running Marshmallow 6.0.1 (rooted) and I am facing a trouble using the Y OTG cable (the one with OTG Input and charging at the same time). The Y OTG cable works fine as a regular OTG cable but it is not charging. Since note 5 comes with a very limited and unextendable memory storage so it would be nice if I will be able to connect my USB pen drive with it to watch movies and charge at the same time. I have searched over the Internet and came across a lot of things which are really confusing like the resistor values of the OTG cables.. but I believe that it is some sort of thing to be configured in the kernel.
So my question is is there any patch or method or application that would let me enable charging on OTG mode for Note 5 for my specific phone model? This is something which I really need to play movies and to make up my TWRP backups since I could not keep that in my phone because of the low storage capacity.
Your help will be greatly appreciated.. please be detailed, step by step way cuz I am a noob.. please also provide the links if I have to download any sort of application or custom patches for kernals for my specific phone model..
Thank u
Any helps??
